I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!” “Gone Where?” Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear the load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!” There are others eyes watching her coming, and other vices ready to take up the glad shout: “Here she comes!” And that is dying…. (Henry Van Dyke)

Lillian Warthen Lavine - March 21, 1946 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Pensacola)
Obituary Preview: Lillian Warthen Lavine, 78, passed away peacefully at her home after a three-year battle with ALS in Houston, Texas on April 23, 2024. Lillian was born on March 21, 1946, to Clarence James Warthen and Bessie Lee (Clark) Warthen in Andalusia, Alabama. In 1950 the family moved to Pensacola, Florida where Lillian grew up. She graduated from Pensacola High School in 1964.
In 1966 Lillian married Joel Michael Gudahl and together they lived and worked in Thailand and Laos during the years of conflict in Southeast Asia. Joel died in 1972 and Lillian returned to Pensacola.
While out for an evening with friends in January 1973 she met David LaVine an Air Force Captain stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Neither Lillian or David had any intention of marriage so they convinced each other and themselves that they could just be friends. On June 15, 1973, the two friends married at Temple Beth El in Pensacola.
Thus began a partnership of rearing children, supporting each other’s careers, and sharing good times with family and friends. Lillian and David enjoyed playing bridge, but not too aggressively, ballroom dancing, but not too flamboyantly, and cooking savory dishes for family and friends, but not too fancily.
In 1974 Lillian and David left the Air Force and moved to Elmira, New York. Lillian would not be still and occupied her days selling Avon and Tupperware, substitute teaching, leading exercise classes, sewing hand puppets for craft fairs, and just having fun.
In 1977 Lillian and David came to Houston where Lillian was able to attend college at the University of Houston. She graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and English and a Masters in second language acquisition. Lillian received great satisfaction as a teaching assistant at U of H and as a Spanish teacher in the International Baccalaureate program at Lamar High School. Her students at Lamar competed in many district-wide contests and were able to garner many awards. She was an accomplished teacher, winning awards and demonstrating her techniques to other teachers. Lillian volunteered to settle Jewish refugees from Russia, and she was recognized as volunteer of the year by Jewish Family Services.
In 1989 the family moved to Clear Lake where Lillian became a residential Realtor. She applied her research and teaching skills to become very successful. Lillian worked for several brokerages over a 30-year period ultimately launching her own company, Clark Warthen Properties.
As Lillian’s real estate career slowed, she renewed her interest in family genealogy. Lillian was able to document her ancestry back to signers of the Magna Carta and became a member of thirteen heritage organizations. These included Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of America, Jamestown Society, and National Society Magna Carta Dames.
On June 16, 2023, Lillian and David renewed their marriage vows of 50 years on the same altar where they were married at Temple Beth El, Pensacola.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie, and Clarence and daughter-in-law Rachel Lavine. She is survived by her sister Charlotte Dase, her husband David R. LaVine, her daughter Sarah Lavine-Kass, her son Benjamin Eli Warthen Lavine, her son-in-law Joseph Kass, and grandchildren Hannah Kass, Naomi Kass, Zoe Kass, Alexander Lavine, Andrew Lavine, and Samantha Lavine.

Richard M. Goldberg - January 12, 1942 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Pensacola)
Obituary Preview: Richard M. Goldberg – dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend - passed away on April 6, 2024, at the age of 82 in Sylvania, OH.
Richard was born on January 12, 1942, to Evelyn and Max Goldberg in Rochester, NY. He grew up in a loving, family-oriented atmosphere, cultivating strong connections with his cousins and extended family in Rochester. This upbringing profoundly influenced Richard’s values, anchoring family at the core of his life. After Richard graduated from Brighton High School in 1959, he majored in History at the University of Rochester. He then went on to study Psychology at the University of Buffalo and then received his PhD in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati.
Richard had a prolific career in the Mental Health field which began at the Dayton VA Hospital. Richard moved his young family to Pensacola, FL in 1969 where he accepted a post as a Psychology Professor at the University of West Florida. Subsequently, he established his own private psychology practice in Pensacola, FL and later in Milton, FL. Richard continued his dedication to improving access to mental health and was integral in establishing the Community Mental Health Center of Santa Rosa County (now the Avalon Center). In 1997 Richard moved to Americus, GA where he was head of the Middle Flint Behavioral Health Center followed by his final move in 1999 to Sylvania, OH where he was head of Behavioral Connections of Wood County. Richard rounded out his career by founding Interim Executive Solutions, LLC in 2015, offering consultancy services primarily to health-related companies needing assistance during transitional periods in their executive management functions and leadership. Richard’s desire to help and share his expertise started in the 1970’s with the B’nai Brith Women, where he began his intermittent consulting work.
Richard married Betty Bruchmann in 1967, becoming stepfather to Betty’s young children Warren, Jeffrey and Douglas Ross. Richard and Betty expanded their family having daughter Rachel in 1969. Richard was married again in 1978 to Deborah Cole, and the two welcomed daughter Jessica in 1984. In 2009, Richard married Joy Hyman and enjoyed his final years with Joy in Sylvania, OH and part-time residence in Ft Lauderdale, FL.
Richard spent his adult life advocating for mental health awareness and access to treatment. Additionally, he wanted to improve lives in a meaningful way. While not realizing the impact they would have on his and others’ lives, Richard accomplished two major achievements outside of his professional and family environments. In 1972, while considering education options in Pensacola, FL, Richard and a group of like-minded parents started a new school called the Creative Learning Center (now called the Creative Learning Academy). Both of Richard’s daughters attended the school that he helped create. In 1975 Richard and another local Pensacola family sponsored the Nguyen family who had barely escaped escalating violence in their area of Vietnam. He helped the Nguyens find employment, housing, education and aided their overall integration into the United States of America. Even after Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen had a home of their own, Richard continued his assistance with the Nguyens. He stayed in touch with some of the family for the rest of his life, considering them his extended family.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents Max and Evelyn Goldberg and his sister Elaine Hughson. Richard is survived by his wife Joy, her daughter and son-in-law Ilana and Eric Levin and their sons Max and Reed, his daughter and son-in-law Jessica and Andrew Zeigler and their children Noah, Amelia and Anna, his daughter and son-in-law Rachel and Timothy Olzer and their children Valerie, Bridget and Madeline, and his surrogate daughters Bang/Bonnie Nguyen Lam and Dung/Zoom Nguyen Le. Richard’s passion, presence, and his love for his family will be greatly missed.

William Bradford Cushman - October 25, 1943 - March 22, 2024

Departed: 03/22/2024 (Pensacola)
Obituary Preview: William Bradford Cushman passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, after a long illness. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1943 to Walton Weber Cushman and Georgia Swanson Cushman, Bill enjoyed a life full of varied interests and talents, while he enriched the lives of countless others with his generous, kind nature and exceptionally gifted and ever-curious mind.
After graduating from high school in 1961, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Since childhood Bill had shown an aptitude for understanding and working with complex electrical systems. Accordingly, after completing basic and advanced training as a new recruit, he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Hornet where---while he was still just a teenager---he was responsible for supervising and maintaining the ship's critical interior communications systems.
Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1964, Bill took advantage of the G.I. Bill to earn a degree in a new interest, philosophy, from the University of Missouri. He then joined the Peace Corps, which sent him to Botswana for three years to teach electrical technology. Bill was gratified and delighted by his students' accomplishments in their new careers as electricians, and he had many fond memories of his experiences and adventures in Botswana and elsewhere in Africa.
After his time in the Peace Corps, Bill returned to the University of Missouri to earn a master's degree in another new interest, social psychology, in a program that emphasized animal behavior. In 1986 Bill earned a doctorate from the University of Maryland in the field of sensory physiology. He then accepted a post-doctoral fellowship at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in Pensacola, Florida, and later a full-time position at the Laboratory as a research scientist, where his research focused primarily on the visual and auditory systems. In 1991, Bill started his own research laboratory and consulting firm, which he operated until his retirement in 2012. One of his firm's ventures involved designing and building an acoustical testing device for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a complex project which harnessed many of Bill's formidable talents, including his impressive computer programming skills. During the course of his academic and research careers, Bill published dozens of scientific papers, wrote three books, and produced fourteen patents. In addition to his lifelong passion for science, Bill was a skilled and ardent sailor, avid reader, and tenderhearted animal lover.
Bill's parents predeceased him. Bill is survived by his wife, Anne, and her Richardson siblings Teresa and William; by his Cushman brothers from his father's second marriage, Robert and Neal; and by his many friends, including his oldest friends Robert Smith, Robert Markowitz, Angus Rupert, and Earl Roberts. Also dear to Bill's heart was Vicki, Bill's canine companion and great comfort during his last illness.
For many years, Bill was a patient at the Veterans Affairs Joint Ambulatory Care Center, Pensacola, where he received superb medical attention and always felt at home. Bill was, as are all who loved him, very grateful to the Center's dedicated professionals for their expert care and many kindnesses.
A private funeral service with military honors will be held for Bill in April at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station Pensacola. To those who may wish to remember Bill with a charitable donation, a gift to the organization of your choice---perhaps one devoted to animal conservation or welfare because both causes meant a great deal to Bill---would be deeply appreciated.

She is survived by her cousin Linda Dionne Clark, and cousins John Lewis Clark, Ill and Lisa Ann Clark Miller who lovingly call her their "Aunt Cherie". As a young child, she was an accomplished pianist. As an adult she raised and trained horses while living in California, and her athleticism won her a black belt in forms in the martial art Taekwondo. Francis Glenn Delgado - August 11, 1951 - January 03, 2024

Departed: 01/03/2024 (Pensacola)
Obituary Preview: After a brief illness, Frank Delgado, passed from his earthly life to his eternal life on January 3rd. Frank was a father, brother, and friend to many who will miss his smile, infectious laughter, and his love for life.
Born in New Orleans, Frank and his family moved to Pensacola where Frank started school in the 2nd grade at Sacred Heart Cathedral School. In 1969 Frank graduated from Catholic High. During these formative years, Frank made many close friends; relationships which last to this day.
No one exemplified the "salt life" more than Frank did throughout his life. Frank and his wife, Audrey, lived on No Name Key for sixteen years, and while not pirates, they sailed the Caribbean on the Dragon Lady and created a stellar waterfront paradise. Frank's creative talent for woodworking and carpentry was evident throughout the home. At a time when there was no power on the key, Frank installed and managed a solar power system that supported the property. The abundant sea life provided a consistent diet of the freshest seafood.
In 1992, Frank and Buttons' son, Nicholas was born. It was at this time that they moved back to Pensacola to be close to family and provide the best opportunities for Nick. Frank taught Nick how to fish and they enjoyed outings on the water, at the beach listening to music, and Nick's sports activities. Theirs was a special father son bond.
Frank was bonded to our beautiful Gulf waters and anyone who knew Frank could confidently say that he was always on "Keys time". No rush, no fuss, just easy-going day to day. Frank was an amazing cook. His specialty was oysters Rockefeller that were the highlight of every gathering, of which there were many. In fact, Frank excelled at culinary delicacies including all types of fish, crabs, conch and more. Frank's family on his Dad's side were Canary Islanders. His ancestors in the 1500's made the cross
Atlantic journey, up through Vera Cruz, settling permanently in the 1700's on the family ranch in San Antonio - still owned by Frankie's uncle and Godfather, Richard Delgado and other family members. Gone from my Sight: A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, “There, she is gone.”
Frank was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph and Rosalie Delgado. Left to celebrate Frank's life are: Son - Nicholas Francis Delgado (Cameron), Audrey "Buttons" Delgado Tucker, Siblings: Cindi Delgado Holland (Anthony), Daryl Delgado (Gina), Rudy Delgado (Beverly), Glenda Delgado Wood, Robyn Delgado, Uncle Richard Delgado (Daniele), Nieces and Nephews: Joshua Turner, Michelle Gipson (Mark & Lily), Sandy Hill (Jon, Tristan & Aiden), Olivia Delgado, Mitchell Delgado (Dec.), Stewart Slater (Bekah & sons), and many loving cousins and friends.
Services: Thursday, January 11, 1:00-3:00 PM Visitation, 3:00 Service, Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home.

Mitchell Jason Delgado - September 29, 1993 - December 26, 2023

Departed: 12/26/2023 (Pensacola)
Obituary Preview: The angels visited our beautiful son the evening of December 26 to escort him to Heaven. Our hearts are unbearably torn apart. Living without Mitchell's bright spirit, beautiful blue eyes and broad smile will be a lifetime challenge for his family, friends, and anyone fortunate enough to have developed a relationship with Mitchell, also called Mitch by many of his closest mates and family.
Early in his life, Mitchell evolved with his many interests. By age 10, he was playing Beethoven on the piano and achieved his second-degree Taekwondo black belt. He loved playing with his friends, playing sports of all kinds and Mitchell loved his St. Paul Catholic Church community. Mitchell was confirmed at St. Ann Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze. Even as a child, Mitchell was kind, generous, respectful, and caring...traits he carried into adulthood.
Into his teen years, Mitchell was funny, warm, friendly and had a ravenous zest for life. He excelled in his schoolwork, receiving many academic accolades and scholarships. Mitchell's love of sports began early, and he got out of many household chores because practice of some sort was a year around commitment! He and his friends played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track throughout middle and high school. Mitchell was a fierce competitor and pushed every throw, drive, run or shot to the ultimate limit. His track speed translated to his love of fast sports cars for which he was passionate. His BMW 435I was his pride and joy.
After graduating from Gulf Breeze High School, Mitchell attended Florida State University (Go Noles!). His years there are best recalled by his close group of friends from GBHS who attended FSU and UWF. I am sure they have lots of "stories" we have yet to hear (or maybe shouldn't). Those guys and girls know who they are. Mitchell earned his BA degree in Criminology and Psychology, planning to attend law school. However, his best friend since childhood, Andrew Zambetti, convinced Mitchell that a move to California to sell solar door to door would be the ticket to great riches and success...both passionate goals of Mitch's. This experience brought new friends and experiences into his life and the lessons learned continued to serve him in his quest to build a solid career. Eventually, Mitchell was hired as a recruiter by CyberCoders and then as senior recruiter with Jobot, where he was employed at the time of his passing. Mitchell was a lifelong New Orleans Saints fan who loved nothing more than watching his team, talking sports with his father, uncle and friends, and predicting the outcome of every game, every season, and buying the latest jersey of new Saints stars. Annual fantasy football with his squad was the highlight of every year. To the core, he was a member of the Who Dat Nation. His IG bio reads "FSU Alum and biggest Saints fan you’ll ever meet."
The outpouring of love and support from Mitchell's vast group of friends has been a saving grace for his family. The common thread is that Mitchell was kind, loyal, intelligent, a deep thinker and debater, funny, non-judgmental, smart, fair, honest, spiritual, and a mentor to many. Mitchell had an uncanny ability to relate to most anyone, and was truly interested in people, their lives, their well-being and their futures, a trait which endeared him to all. Several newer friends have said that Mitchell's concern, care, mentoring and advice had changed their lives forever in a positive way that they never thought possible. His legacy will be one of profound impact on all who knew him.
Nothing was more important to Mitchell than his family. We will forever cherish the memories we made with Mitch, including holidays, birthdays, sporting events, travel, the many museums we visited, and just hanging out at the house. Mitchell adored his dogs, actually all dogs and animals. He had a special place in his heart for the many pups in our family over his life. Ellie, Mila, Honey Bun, Chloe, Finley, and our cat Midnight will miss Mitch and his sweet, gentle love for them.
Mitchell was a seeker of knowledge and truth, was a voracious reader and could converse on so many topics, including history, politics, self-improvement, fiction, investments and sports. We discussed his concerns and hopes for others, for family, for the future, spirituality, music, and so much more. He was an old soul at heart.
On his mother's side, Mitchell was a direct descendent of John Adams, whose mother was Susanna Boylston. On his father's side, the Canary Islanders settled in Bexar County, Texas in 1731 and established the community now known as San Antonio. The captain of the Presidio, by authority of King Philip V, in July of 1731 read the following decree to the settlers of the viceroy declaring the Islanders and their descendants "Hijos Dalgo", Persons of Nobility. The original family lands remain in family hands.
Unintended opiate addiction due to an accident or injury is a national epidemic and extinguished the bright light that was Mitchell. Mitchell had been clean for nearly six months, but the addiction overtook him when he came home for Christmas. Be kind and understanding to those battling addiction. It's not their fault. No one wants to be an addict. Seek help and support for loved ones suffering from addiction of any kind.
Until we all meet again in Heaven, Mitchell, you will be honored, loved and remembered forever by your family and friends. Family who will carry you in our hearts are: Parents, Daryl Delgado and Gina Boyleston-Delgado, sister Olivia Delgado, brother Joshua Turner, Aunts & Uncles: Steve and Peggy Boyleston, Rudy and Beverly Delgado, Frank Delgado, Glenda Delgado Wood, Cindi & Anthony Holland, Robyn Delgado, Audrey "Aunt Buttons" Tucker - Cousins: Michelle Gipson (husband Mark), Sandy Hill (husband Jon), Nick Delgado (wife Cameron), Lily Gipson, Jason Boyleston (wife Sharan Magnusson), Aaron Boyleston, Sadie Kendrick, Stewart Slater (wife Bekah & sons), all of the family from Texas, many other relatives and all of his friends (too many to name, but you know who you are).

Departed: 12/09/2023 (Pensacola)
Obituary Preview: Rosalind Nissim passed away on December 9th, 2023 in Pensacola, Florida.
Rosalind was born in Monticello, NY on December 2nd, 1938 to Hyman and Pauline (Handsman) Berkowitz. Her parents were first generation Americans from families who immigrated from Eastern Europe.
When she was around 3 years old, Rosalind’s family moved to New York City, and she grew up living in different sections of Queens (Sunnyside, Astoria, and Elmhurst). Her father owned and operated candy stores where she would develop a lifelong love of sweets. She also was an avid dancer in her youth and spent many years studying ballet.
She spent many summers at her grandfather’s (Morris Handsman) farm in Monticello and that remained a special place in her life. She fondly remembered finding adventures playing on the property, as well as helping her grandfather on the farm and in his job as a carpenter and builder.
Rosalind was an excellent student and attended Queens College on full academic scholarship. She majored in Biology with a minor in Russian. She wanted to become a doctor but there was no money to send her to medical school, so after graduation she ended up landing a job in publishing. She worked for the American Institute of Physics for 38 years, becoming managing editor of the AIP journal. Her job also included editing the journal of the Acoustical Society of America and she enjoyed attending ASA conferences twice a year at many locations across the country, including Hawaii.
She was an avid reader who valued learning and knowledge. She enjoyed trivia contests and shows (especially Jeopardy!) and loved doing crosswords and playing Scrabble.
Above all Roz(as she preferred to be called in adulthood) was a kind and friendly person who strongly believed in judging people on their merits and nothing else. She showed a genuine interest in others and was always quick with a smile and disarming word. She was loved and made many friends wherever she went, known for her quick wit, good humor, and genuine empathy. She had an extraordinary level of patience and was a natural caregiver. Roz was also an outstanding cook, with spanakopita (Greek spinach-cheese pie) her most memorable dish, a favorite of her son.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 49 years, Sam Nissim.

Draft multiple versions of the obituary and seek feedback from trusted friends and family members before finalizing the notice. You can also consult with funeral home staff or professional writers for guidance.

How do I ensure that my loved one's memory lives on through their obituary?

Beyond publishing the initial obituary, consider creating ongoing tributes such as annual memorials, charity events, or scholarship funds that will continue to celebrate your loved one's life and legacy over time.
