William H. Browne, Jr. was born on June 27, 1941, the oldest child of William and Carol Browne. He grew up in Upper Arlington, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. Those born immediately before Pearl Harbor, as he was, were often referred to as "weather stripping" because they kept the draft away.
He attended Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Grandview Heights, Ohio, with his family and joined the church at twelve. He joined the Cub Scouts and later helped start a new Boy Scout Troop in Grandview. He later achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Gold and Bronze Palms and received the Order of the Arrow through church service. Always enjoying the outdoors, he participated in a canoe trip on the Montreal River, hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

He initially worked at the Westinghouse Aerospace Division for three years and then joined NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. His work at Westinghouse included participation in the development of the first lunar TV used on the first moon landings and the Phantom F4 radar employed by the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He met Mary, the love of his life, at the Laurel, MD Presbyterian church in 1973 and they were married in 1976. Mary and he raised three children, John, Gary, and Kim, of whom he was very proud.
He and Mary both loved the outdoors and hiked in the White Mountains, The Great Smokey Mountains, Grand Tetons, Glacier National Park, and Yosemite National Park, with the most challenging being Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Maine. He and Mary joined the Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, MD in 1996 and later became members of The Gideons International in 1998, serving in numerous camp and state-level leadership positions. He had the opportunity to travel to India with the Gideons distributing Bibles in Chennai and New Delhi.
He retired from NASA in 2008, and he and Mary moved to the state of Georgia in 2017 to be closer to Gary and Kim, who had moved South. He and Mary joined the Highlands Presbyterian Church in LaFayette, GA, at that time, and he was installed as an Elder in January 2020.

Departed: 03/06/2024 (Chattanooga)
Obituary Preview: Emery Edward Balthrop of Lookout Mountain Tennessee, peacefully went to be with the Lord at age 72, on Wednesday, March 6th, in Chattanooga Tennessee.
He was born in a small town in Tennessee called Newbern, on January 30th, 1952, to parents Dorthy Jean Mooney and Jesse Boyd Mooney. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Jeanne Suzanne Mooney and David Michael Mooney. The family moved to a few small towns in Tennessee including Dyersburg before moving to Toledo, Ohio. While in Toledo, he received his high school education at Start High School. He met his future wife, Maribeth Balthrop while attending the same church in Toledo. They were happily married in 1972. He attended and received certification at Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota for his college education. Sensing a call to serve the Lord, he was ordained as a minister in 1973.
Emery and Maribeth moved to Jasper, Tennessee, where Emery was the Pastor at a church. While in Jasper, their family grew as they had a son and a daughter. They eventually moved their family to their current residence on the Tennessee side of Lookout Mountain. He amassed more than 45 years of experience working as a jewelry Sales Professional. He was recently featured in the Employee Spotlight in Fink’s Jewelers Magazine for his outstanding work and loyalty. The article describes his relationship with his clients as “unparalleled.” Above all, Emery loved his family and would do anything in his power to make their lives better. The word selfish never touched his name. Although Emery wasn’t actively preaching, he continued to walk faithfully with God. His steadfast faith in the Lord was by far one of the highest priorities in his life. He had an avid love for learning and reading, with friends recounting that he always had a new book recommendation for them. He had a fascination for war history and began collecting and intricately painting toy soldiers and figurines in 1976. He collected several hundred toy soldiers, displaying them in battle scenes and elaborate dioramas. Along with the toy soldiers, he had a large collection of other miscellaneous war memorabilia. He loved sitting in his recliner to relax and watch his favorite college football team… Roll Tide!

Samuel Bosworth Smith - January 27, 1939 - January 28, 2024

Departed: 01/28/2024 (Chattanooga)
Obituary Preview: Samuel Bosworth Smith, IV, died in the loving arms of his family at his home on January 28, 2024. He was 85.
Born on Missionary Ridge, Sam attended The Bright School (’51), Baylor School (‘57), and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (BA ‘61). He developed life-long friends within the UNC Phi Delta Theta fraternity and a legendary obsession with Tar Heel basketball.
Following UNC, Sam embarked on a four-decade career at T.H. Payne Company, the office supply concern that was founded by his great grandfather in 1865 and held the title of Chattanooga’s oldest business until its sale in 1996.
A devout Episcopalian, Sam grew up in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and spent his adult years in Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain.
In the service of his family and community, Sam wore many hats. He was a Sunday school teacher, a church usher, a youth baseball coach, and a Cub Scout leader. Sam also joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Chattanooga and was thankful for the opportunity to provide support and guidance for his little brother James.
Sam had an encyclopedic knowledge of baseball history and conversations with friends often began with an enthusiastic trivia challenge. He was a guaranteed laugh with razor-sharp wit that failed to dull with age. But mostly, Sam was a committed husband to a wife he adored and selfless father of two boys in which he took pride.
Sam found great pleasure in sports. As a participant, he could often be found at the Chattanooga YMCA where he played competitive, then social, racquetball most of his adult life. He hiked all the trails of the Chickamauga Battlefield numerous times with his sons. As a spectator, he was not discerning, but the Masters, UNC basketball, and any athletic endeavor involving his children took precedence.
Sam is survived by his wife Patricia Nelson Smith, with whom he would have celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary this April; his son Samuel Bosworth Smith, V, (Zoe) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; his son Courtenay Nelson Smith (Anna) of Andover, Mass.; and his grandson Quentin Samuel Smith of Andover, Mass.
Sam was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Bosworth Smith, III; his mother, Eleanor Howell Smith; and his sister, Helen Smith Davenport.

Mary Frances Campbell - April 25, 1931 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (Chattanooga)
Obituary Preview: Mary Frances "Mefran" Campbell died peacefully surrounded by family at her home on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, early Monday morning, January 1, 2024.
Mefran was born in Worcester, MA on April 25, 1931 and grew up in Ipswich, Ma. She loved to talk about her high school years in St. Anne’s convent (bet you didn’t know Mefran was in a convent!). After graduating from “the convent” in 1949 she attended Tufts University where she was swept off her feet by the true love of her life Charles Howell Campbell whom she married in 1951. They had five children over the next six years. Tragically, Howell died in 1960, and Mefran dedicated herself to raising her children. She was an extraordinary mother and worked as a kindergarten teacher at Lookout Mountain Elementary and a lifeguard at Fairyland Club. She also participated in various volunteer organizations and smocked dresses for countless friends and family members. 25 years after leaving Tufts, Mefran, determined to get a college degree, entered Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga. and received her Bachelor of Science degree. Returning to Lookout Mountain in the late 70s, Mefran entered nursing school where, at age 47, she was 21 years older than the class average. She received her RN and graduated with a master's degree in Nursing in 1981 where she was both student body president and class valedictorian. She spent most of her ensuing 30-year nursing career working in the Emergency Room, many of them on the midnight shift and always taking holiday shifts for nurses with young families. She retired, reluctantly, from nursing in 2013 at age 82 and only then because of the advent of EMR (electronic medical records)!
In 1984 she married Dick Draudt with whom she spent almost 30 happy years of parties, travel and family reunions before he passed away in 2013.
Mefran, who always loved a good party, found plenty of time to spend with her family and many friends, entertain with elaborate dinner parties, travel to all parts of the world, learn mahjong, play hand and foot, and fiercely compete in her beloved bridge games.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Perry and Katharine Kettell Smith, her beloved husband, Howell, her son, Bruce, her sister, Sally, her brother, James, and her later husband, Dick.
She is survived by her children, Chuck (Karen), Kathy, Karanne and David; grandchildren, Warthen, Chris, Mary Frances, Katie, Justin, Lauren, David, Corey, Alyson, Sarah, and Gus; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Nancy Black Bryan - September 16, 1928 - December 05, 2023

Departed: 12/05/2023 (Chattanooga)
Obituary Preview: Nancy Black Bryan, 95, of Lookout Mountain, passed away on Tuesday, December 5th, 2023 surrounded by her family.  Nancy was born in Portland, Oregon and attended Catlin High school, Bennett Junior
College, and The University of Colorado. She is survived by her children: Mimi Kyle (Kendall), William Bryan (Linda), Sarah Robbins (Westphal); her grandchildren: Ashley Carlson, Henry  Robbins, George Robbins, and her great grandchildren: Ellis
Carlson and Parker Carlson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Thomas Bryan, III and her brother, Harvey Nicol
Black. Bennett College in Millbrook, New York was a finishing school. Nancy’s father chose it because he did not believe she should work outside the home. Wanting more of a challenge in life, she transferred mid- year to University of Colorado at Boulder.  Not telling her father of her change of plans until the end of her Christmas break, is one of many examples of her spit-fire ways! After a three month tour of Europe with two girlfriends and countless shenanigans, Nancy moved to New York City and worked as a travel agent.  She was set up on a blind date by her future sister in law’s mother, and her whirlwind romance to Henry Bryan, III began.  Henry traveled to New York on business and after three dates, Henry asked Nancy to travel to Lookout Mountain to meet the family.  Nancy refused unless escorted, so Henry’s father went to New York to escort Nancy to her future home.  They
were engaged shortly thereafter and were married 50 years. Her life was characterized by acts of service. Some of her service included: Junior League of Portland, Junior League of Chattanooga, Docent at the Hunter Art Museum, and as Editor of the Mountain Breeze.  We ate dinner by candlelight every night, and it was a special treat to eat on TV trays when the dining room table was covered in the magazine’s layout! Some of her most amusing stories were told of European travels and as a “Brockette” on Senator Bill Brock’s campaign as well as her travels on the Conservation Committee of the Garden Club of Lookout Mountain.  She served as President, and was a member for 45 years. She enjoyed playing bridge and tennis, and all things horses! Her steadfast love of horses can be traced to her family’s Nicol Riding Academy. She started riding when she was 4, and bought her first horse for her first grandchild in 1990. She showed 5-gaited saddlebreds while Henry drove a sulkie cart. They showed together all over the Southeast, enjoying their shared love
of horses. Her fondest accomplishment is showing multiple times at the State Fair in Louisville, KY. Falling off getting ON a horse and breaking her arm at age 85 did not slow her down. In her last riding years, she would enter the ring with her white hair neatly tucked into her top hat, and receive a standing
ovation for her dedication and persistence to the sport. Though her final years were spent nestled at Alexian  Village on “that other mountain,” she continued to read the Chattanooga Times Free Press paper and the Wall Street Journal. She followed financial trends, and was always sure to take care of her precious nurses at Alexian. She will be remembered for her spunky personality, unparalleled independence, fierce loyalty, generosity, and love of her children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family will receive friends Tuesday, December 12th at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout
Mountain from 3:00-4:00 with an interment of the ashes immediately following.

Jimmy loved playing football on his grandpa “Jack”’s front lawn and helping his father and uncle in their bowling alley and pool hall. Around 10 years old, Jimmy and his family moved to La Crescenta-Montrose, California where he graduated from Glendale High School, with honors, as one of only two students to receive a full tuition NROTC scholarship to Yale.  Jimmy won other awards in drama and track and field as well. Jimmy attended YMCA camp his teenage summers in Big Bear and Catalina Island achieving the highest honors as a White “Ragger” to eventually become a camp counselor himself. Jimmy was always adored by children and animals alike, and had a special way with them. His beloved German Shepard “Rexie” was his constant companion and he had a natural gift for training animals.
Jimmy went on to study mathematics at Yale, while a Midshipman in the Navy, and served on the USS Boston CAG-1 guided missile cruiser, the state-of-the-art technology for its day. Jimmy worked summers as an actuarial student for Metropolitan Life in New York City, where he met his first wife, Patricia (“Pat”) Immaculata Turi, a graduate of Virginia Intermont. Before graduation, his son, and only child, James Stuart Arnold III (“Jamie”) was born at the Yale Hospital. During his time at Yale, Jimmy sang in the Augmented Seven, the Whiffenpoofs, and the Yale Glee Club, cutting several LP albums holding his picture and name.
After graduating with a bachelors in mathematics from Yale, class of 1960, he started as a math teacher at the Menlo School, a private prep school in Menlo California, living on campus housing, coaching track and leading singing groups. Jimmy would work summers as a camp counselor. In 1964, he moved to Haddonfield, NJ to work as an actuary for Penn Mutual in Philadelphia and purchased his first house. In 1967, he moved to Lawrenceville, NJ to teach at the prestigious all-boys preparatory school, “The Lawrenceville School” and lived in various houses on campus, such as the Hamill House, the “Little Red House”, the Lower School dorms, and the house on the golf course by the observatory. Jimmy was house master for the Dickinson, Cleve, and Griswold houses during which time he coached football but predominantly track and field and cross-country events, specializing in the pole vault with Ed Poreda. He also directed the Lawrencian all-boys a-cappella singing group conducting and composing and arranging music, ran the bridge club, co-authored the first computer science textbooks with Bruce Presley and avidly played golf and tennis and snow skied.  He was one of the best educators ever known, loved by all his students. Jimmy was a member of the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church pastored by the late Rev. Dana Fearon III at which he sang in the choir and solos.
Jimmy was granted a National Science Foundation scholarship to Bowdoin and graduated number one in his class with a Masters in Mathematics. There at Bowdoin, he studied under, and was class secretary for, the renown topologist and game theorist from Princeton University, Dr. Albert William Tucker whose Klein bottle was always on his desk. Prior to leaving Lawrencville, Jimmy’s amateur avocation of singing and acting grew more momentum performing off-broadway musicals for the Village Players and opera for the Princeton Opera Society. After his re-marriage to Ritchey Nelson Taylor, of Kenosha, WI, he moved to Winter Park, Florida to pursue his acting career professionally. He was in off-broadway musicals such as the 1776 touring show and performed regularly in the “Once Upon a Stage” dinner theater and was in various television commercials as a member of SAG.
Later re-marrying to Sylvia Sue Greene, of Meat Camp, NC, he returned to teaching private school at the co-ed Howey Academy in Howey-in-the-Hills Florida living on Picciola Island, but later moved to Bedford, Virginia in order to pursue New Age spiritual interests at the Prema World Community. He lived as a vegetarian, and taught in the public school system for a while as well as acting Vice President of the Pioneer Energy Company, a small renewable energy business ahead of its time. Jimmy and his wife Sue were Shaklee Master Coordinators, owned a small farm with gardens and fruit trees and learned to keep bees, which he was inspired to learn during a Montessori school project of his step-son Joe Royall. Jimmy always had a natural green thumb learning from his mother Doris who raised African Violets adeptly. Soon after, he returned to teach private school again and to coach track at the Virginia Episcopal School (VES) in Lynchburg, VA. Jimmy was involved in the Bedford “Little Town Players” and the Roanoke Opera Society. Jimmy and Sue developed and sold their speed reading course to companies to teach employees how to read fast. Jimmy built a solar greenhouse onto his farmhouse and a root cellar and enjoyed the pastoral life during this period of seeking. Jimmy performed with such well-known artists as Tony Castellano, Sr.
Following his third wife, Jimmy moved back to Winter Park, FL to teach math and computer science and coached track at the Trinity Prep School  from which he retired. Jimmy bought a house in Oviedo, FL, and as an active bachelor, enjoyed dating, traveling, whitewater rafting, hang gliding and cave spelunking with his many male buddies. Jimmy was always a “man’s man”, one of the boys and a real charmer and ladies man and loved a good party, wine, beautiful women, music and song. In the Orlando area, Jimmy continued on with singing and performing in operas and theater with the Orlando Opera Society for twelve seasons until they closed and with annual special events after that even directing and producing off-broadway theater at the Mt Dora Ice House Theater.
He later fell in love with and married a former friend and fellow actor in the Bedford, VA, “Little Town Players”,  Terry Campbell and moved back to Lynchburg, VA. He was “Sky Masterson” and she was “Sarah Brown” in the off-broadway musical “Guys and Dolls”. Jimmy continued to raise bees and rabbits and perform in Opera with the Roanoke Opera where I performed in the French L'Opera. Jimmy taught college math part-time at Central Virginia Community College. Jimmy had founded a business in Florida called “Math Doctors” with his son to tutor math. Jimmy was president of the Apple Users Group in Lynchburg and taught his son ( Jamie Arnold aka J.T. Taylor ), step-son ( Joe Royall ) and nephew ( Will Guggenheim ) computer programming, in which all three became leaders of that field. Terry would call him “Sky” and he would call her “Sarah”. This role would embody Jimmy’s natural persona and define him.
After his fourth wife, Jimmy moved back to Florida and purchased a house in Apopka, FL. He founded computer consulting business “EaglePower Solutions, Inc.” with his son and kept his hand in mathematics and computer science assisting his son as an actuary for the development of algorithms for such clients as Evangelical Christian Credit Union’s Prosum commercial loan origination software, for University of Central Florida Construction Management software package, and for GameCraft, train-the-trainer casino software. Jimmy was similar to the “Sky Masterson” role he played and always won enough to pay for his trips when going to the casino or dog or horse track. Jimmy had uncanny luck throughout his life. Jimmy continued to tutor math privately on the side and kept involved with music via four-part harmony groups, and small performances here and there during Holiday seasons. Jimmy was a great entertainer and consummate storyteller, especially ghost stories at the camp fireside.
Jimmy placed his trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, confessing him as Savior around 1987. Though his faith has wavered at times, his ecclesiastical music composition “Oh Come Let Us Sing” embodies his core faith and we have great hope Jimmy is with the Lord. Jimmy became a very kind man and was always generous to a fault all his life.
In mid-2023, Jimmy left Orlando to live in Bradenton Florida with his son and family for his final days. Jimmy was predeceased by his best friend from Yale and brother-in-law, William Guggenheim III. He is survived by his sister, Judith Guggenheim, his four nephews, Will, Chris and Jon Guggenheim, and his son James S. Arnold III (aka J.T. Taylor) and his three grandchildren Elijah and Ezekiel Arnold and Brittany (“Nikki”) Arnold Hall, and his three great grandchildren, Willow Esther Arnold, Jaxon Nial Hall and Ryian Rhys Wawrykiw.

Our Mother went to be with her Lord and Savior this past Saturday the 11th of November, 2023. Her love of her Dad, a US Veteran, always made Veteran’s Day special. She enjoyed flying and was even a pilot; and while married to Edgar M Jolley, flew in 1962 to track the General for Mayor Kelley so the train could be stopped in Chattanooga, what was known as the “Great Locomotive Chase”. Excitement seemed to be in her character as she enjoyed water skiing (even trick skiing on my Dad’s shoulders); showing and breeding Chow-Chows with several champions in her name; gardening and hybridizing daylilies creating and naming several after her granddaughters; design and construction, including designing her own home with a driveway through home like sized boulders; and genealogy. She also loved those Thin Mints and Do-si-Do’s. Chocolate, to the very end, was her favorite!

She was a long time member here and loved the Lee Anderson Sunday School Class and especially the sermons given by Ben Haden. Visitation commences at 11 AM on Thursday the 16th with the service starting at 12:30 PM. A family gathering will be at the cemetery after the service.
