Departed: 04/17/2022 (Lafayette)
Obituary Preview: Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at 1:00 pm in the Sunrise Chapel at Walters Funeral Home for Luke LaGrange, 41, who passed away on April 17, 2022.  Father Bryan Taylor, Pastor of St. Genevieve Catholic Church, will officiate the funeral ceremony.  Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery immediately following the service.
Visitation hours will be held on Monday, April 25, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., and will resume on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m.  A rosary will be prayed on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
Luke is survived by his mother, Ida LaGrange of Lafayette;  his brother, Mark LaGrange and his wife Raquel of Lafayette;  his sister, Leah Hebert and her husband Kim of Lafayette;  his paternal grandmother, Anna Lou LaGrange of Cecilia;  one niece, Anna Maria Hebert;  three nephews, Brennan LaGrange, Grant LaGrange, and Brooks Hebert;  one great-nephew, Knox LaGrange;  and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby LaGrange;  his maternal grandparents, Victoria and Giorgio Gottardi;  and his paternal grandfather, Preston LaGrange.
Luke loved life and people, and gave joy to so many.  He was highly intelligent, funny, and had a fantastic sense of style.  Having no children of his own, Luke had a special connection with his niece and nephews, whom he adored.  Not only was he the “fun, cool uncle,” but he was a mentor and friend as well, who offered them inspiration and guidance.  While Luke enjoyed traveling the world, he absolutely loved coming home to his beloved city of New Orleans. He relished all that the city had to offer, from running in its parks, dining at fine restaurants, listening to live music, and attending sporting events. As a young child, he started following LSU Football and the New Orleans Saints with his father and brother, and continued to do so passionately throughout his life. In spite of his many interests, his greatest fulfillment in life, however, came from his devotion to his family and loyalty to his wide circle of friends.
Luke was an Honor Graduate of  the Teurlings Catholic High School Class of 1999.  He attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and went on to graduate with honors in 2003.  He was subsequently employed as an Industrial Sales Engineer, a career in which he enjoyed tremendous success for many years.
Pallbearers will be Mark LaGrange, Kim Hebert, Brennan LaGrange, Grant LaGrange, Brooks Hebert, and Lee Kawas.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Tannya Aguilera for the love and care she showed Luke in the time she knew him.

Roger Quince Surratt - November 12, 1949 - February 06, 2022

Departed: 02/06/2022 (Lafayette)
Obituary Preview: Roger Quince Surratt, 72, died at 12:15 a.m. on February 6, 2022.
Mr. Surratt was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He graduated from East Jefferson High School in Metairie, LA, in 1967 where he played baseball, was a member of the Key Club, a class favorite, and was a sponsor for one of the women’s sororities at Riverdale High School. He enrolled at University of Southwestern Louisiana and pledged Kappa Sigma fraternity before he was drafted into the United States Army in Vietnam in 1969. Roger served a tour of duty from 1970-1971. Upon his return from Vietnam, he completed his degree in advertising design in 1975. Throughout the next 20 years, Roger was involved in numerous civic, media, and Lafayette Mardi Gras organizations.
Mr. Surratt is survived by his three daughters: Katherine Jean Movassaghi (Eric), Elizabeth Anne Boyd (Adam), and Rebecca Lynne Hetherwick, and the mother of his daughters, Josette Cook Surratt, all of Lafayette, LA. He is also survived by his sister, Sindy Surratt-Clarkson (Dave), of Metairie, LA, and his brother, Dennis Surratt (Ann) of Morrilton, AR. He has eight grandchildren: Josie and Camille Movassaghi, Jack and Drew Snyder, Madison and Mason Boyd, and Jonah and Sam Hetherwick. He also leaves behind five nieces and nephews: Stephanie Bilbe Burkett, Harry Bilbe, and Carter Bilbe, all of New Orleans, LA, and Ashley Surratt Hoelezeman and Justin Surratt, both of Morrilton, AR.
Mr. Surratt is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Arvil Quincy Surratt and Billie Jean Surratt, both of Morrilton, AR.
Roger was the life of the party. He was clever, charismatic, smart, and fun. He had a good sense of humor and was a talented artist, telling his daughters bedtime stories and sketching them out or hand-drawing advertising logos before digital graphic design came about. Roger loved baseball and took his daughters to many games at the Astrodome to see the Astros in the 1980s. The love of music was a part of his joie de vivre; the turntable on the record player was always moving with Roger, frequently combined with a delicious meal that he cooked. Roger loyally supported the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, its programs, and his fraternity throughout his life.
Most notably, Roger loved history, taking great pride in his family’s participation in various American wars. He was a voracious reader of history and traced his family tree through the American Revolution, the Civil War, and through his father’s participation in WWII. Ultimately, his greatest patriotic and familial tribute came from serving in the Army in the Vietnam War.
The family is very grateful for the palliative and end-of-life support of Heart of Hospice, Mrs. Maria Menard, Ms. Valerie at Right at Home, and Brandy and Taylor Oglesby, private caregivers. The family would also like to thank the Veterans Home in Jennings, LA, and the Veterans Administration, who made true on their promise to support their veterans and took care of Roger’s mental and physical issues for the rest of his life in return for his service.
Visitation will be from 2:30-4:00 p.m. at Walters Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 9 with a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. Deacon Ken Soignier will officiate the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a way for loved ones to pay tribute and share memories.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, such as date, time, location, and burial information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published in. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or audio clips to make the obituary more personal and engaging. These additions can help tell the story of the person's life and provide a more meaningful tribute.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses where you can submit the obituary, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper varies depending on the publication and its policies. Some newspapers may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for longer notices.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Keep in mind that your family may still need to review and finalize the details when the time comes.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It's published on websites dedicated to hosting obituaries, social media platforms, or funeral home websites. Online obituaries often remain available for an extended period, allowing people to access and share them easily.

How long do online obituaries stay posted?

The duration for which an online obituary remains posted varies depending on the website or platform. Some sites may keep them up indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days).

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. You can usually edit an online obituary through the website where it was published. However, it's essential to check with the website's administrators or moderators beforehand to understand their editing policies.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that informs readers of someone's passing. It typically includes only basic information like name, age, date of birth and death, and sometimes funeral service details. Death notices are often shorter than full-fledged obituaries.

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice provides minimal information about the deceased, whereas an obituary offers more detailed biographical information and often includes personal anecdotes and tributes. Obituaries aim to celebrate the person's life, while death notices primarily serve as notifications.

Can I include humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or stories can help capture their essence and make the tribute more relatable and engaging.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased's life or circumstances surrounding their death, it's essential to approach these topics with tact and respect. Consider consulting with family members or close friends before deciding what information to include.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to mention charitable organizations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This allows mourners to make donations in memory of their loved one.
