Obituary Preview: The Life Story of Isaac Williams
Isaac "Ike" Williams was born October 26, 1939 to the late Louise Williams Walker in Burke County, Georgia. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, the late Lindsey & Myrtle Williams. Isaac was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Williams Walker, stepfather Willie Walker Sr., sister Veronica Walker, and stepsister Alavan Walker.
As he grew up in Burke County, at an early age Isaac was baptized at Rosier Grove Baptist Church. He received his education at Florence Grove Elementary and Waynesboro High schools. After his schooling, Isaac moved to St. Petersburg and then to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he lived and worked until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1961. During family gatherings he and his cousins (Winifred and Rebecca) who grew up with him shared stories of his hard work and how little he was paid, yet it went toward helping the grandparents to support the family.
Over the years, Isaac cherished his memories of visits to Ft. Lauderdale, and especially the Thanksgiving gatherings he attended in Atlanta, Georgia for 20 years up until 2019. In 2019 during the Thanksgiving gathering, Isaac and his cousins who grew up with him were honored as the oldest Williams descendants. The younger family members in attendance appreciated the opportunity to understand how they are connected to family. Isaac is survived by his daughters Jennifer Elayne Howard, Ft. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, achievements, and details about their life. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They also help to preserve the person's legacy and memory for future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, family members, close friends, or a funeral home staff member writes an obituary. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), surviving family members, occupation, hobbies, achievements, education, military service (if applicable), and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet informative, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos or videos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos, videos, or even audio clips to accompany the written notice. This can help to make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any required documentation and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries ahead of time. This can ensure that your life story is told accurately and honestly, while also taking some burden off your loved ones during a difficult time.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for print publication, while online options may be free or low-cost.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only essential information such as name, age, date of death, and funeral service details. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or cannot be prepared in time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death and providing biographical information. A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service, typically focusing on personal anecdotes and memories of the deceased.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate the deceased person's personality and spirit. However, use discretion and consider the audience when deciding what type of humor to include.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. For online obituaries, changes can usually be made quickly. For print publications, corrections may appear in a subsequent edition.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's legacy and support a worthy cause.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an online obituary varies depending on the platform and their review process. Some websites may publish immediately upon submission, while others may take several hours or days for approval and posting.

Can I edit or update an existing online obituary?

In most cases, yes! Online obituary platforms usually allow you to make changes or updates to the original notice. Contact their customer support team for assistance with editing or revising the content.

What happens to online obituaries after they're published?

Online obituaries are typically archived and remain accessible on the website for an extended period or even permanently. This allows friends and family to revisit the tribute and share memories over time.

Are online obituaries searchable?

Yes! Most online obituary platforms make their notices searchable by name, date range, location, or other criteria. This helps people find specific tributes and connect with others who knew the deceased person.

Can I republish an old obituary from years ago?

You may be able to republish an old obituary depending on the original publication's policies and copyright laws. Be sure to obtain necessary permissions before re-sharing the content.

What if I want to keep my loved one's passing private?

You can opt for a private or limited-circulation obituary if you prefer not to publicly announce the death. Alternatively, you may choose not to publish an obituary at all. Consult with your funeral home or trusted advisors for guidance on handling this sensitive situation.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers?

If you're receiving condolences from people you don't know through online guestbooks or social media, you can respond graciously but briefly. Acknowledge their kind words without feeling obligated to engage in lengthy conversations.

What if I'm struggling with writing an obituary due to grief?

Grief can make it challenging to write an effective obituary. Consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member who knew your loved one well. Funeral homes may also offer guidance or writing services during this difficult time.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, song lyrics, or biblical passages can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with your loved one's personality or values.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing about my loved one's life?

To ensure accuracy when writing about your loved one's life, gather information from multiple sources such as family members, friends, photographs, documents, and personal mementos. Verify facts whenever possible before publishing the obituary.
