Peggy Sue Eskridge Inman - October 10, 1936 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Peggy Sue Eskridge Inman, 87, died Friday, May 3, 2024, at The Pinnacle of Oxford, MS. A visitation will be held Monday, May 6, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home. A private burial will take place in Eastover Memorial Cemetery.
Peggy was born in her family home on October 10, 1936, in Delay, MS, to the late Jewell McCarty and Thomas Eskridge. A voracious reader, Peggy’s life rivaled the greatest adventure stories that could be found among her impressive library. In her early years, she and her friends would be driven to school by none other than William Faulkner. Many years later, she would organize several of her University High School reunions, where she’d gather with old friends to reminisce on their idyllic childhood in the South. Her Sunday School teacher at church was the famous Jerry Clower. During the Civil Rights Era, Peggy worked in the FBI Office in Mobile, AL, where she would witness firsthand what many have only read about in history books.
When her husband, Gordon’s, job took the family to Saudia Arabia for five years, Peggy quickly immersed herself in the culture, going as far as to join the local work force. Peggy developed a passion for traveling, going all over the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. She was courageous, full of life, and looked for any opportunity to challenge herself. Peggy became a certified scuba diver, obtaining special certification to dive in the Red Sea. While she’d experienced so much of the world and so many beautiful places, few things brought her as much joy as simple camping trips with her entire family. Of her many adventures, being a mother and grandmother was the one she was most proud of. In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Inman.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Shari Murphree and her husband, Nathanael, of Cleveland, MS; sons, Charles “Chuck” Inman and his wife, Barbara of Oxford, MS and Martin “Marty” Inman and his wife, Alicia, of Oxford, MS; sister, Janie Maples of Chipley, FL; five grandchildren, Tim Inman (Josh Shipman), Brandi Inman, Embrey Jackson (Cody), Zachary Murphree, and Zoie Murphree.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Peggy’s memory may be made to Memory Makers, 1558 Skyline Drive, Oxford, MS 38655.

Solatus "Ruth" Sartin Smith - February 16, 1925 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Solatus “Ruth” Sartin Smith, 99, died Monday, April 29, 2024, in the comfort of her home in Oxford, MS. A service honoring the life of Mrs. Smith will be held Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. David Ard officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow the service in Shiloh Cemetery.
Ruth was born on February 16, 1925, in Calhoun County, MS, to the late Missouri Jane Vaughn and Henry Alton Sartin. She married young to Riley Albert Smith, whose service in the military stationed the couple in Virginia. It wasn’t long before they were relocating internationally, living in Japan in 1952, and moving to Canada in 1956. By boat, train, plane, and car, Ruth had lived a thousand lives, all while raising her children and caring diligently for her family. She lacked no confidence, fearlessly traveling to whatever location laid ahead. Ruth developed a love and appreciation for travel, doing so extensively and as often as possible. She was famous for her quote, “have car, will travel,” and stayed true to her word, taking road trips as far as California even into her 80s and 90s.
As the wife of a veteran, she had a heart for those that had bravely served. Ruth volunteered her time often with the Disabled American Veteran’s Auxiliary and served as State Commander from 1983-1984. She was a former member of Shiloh Baptist Church and, upon returning to Oxford, became a member of North Oxford Baptist Church. Ruth enjoyed all types of work with her hands, including crocheting, knitting, and embroidery. She lovingly made clothing for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and it brought her great sadness when she was no longer able to make pieces for the new additions to her family. Serving as the matriarch of five generations, Ruth was a wellspring of wisdom, always willing to share cooking tips, advice on life, or simply provide a shoulder to cry on. She held endless support and love for her family, who meant more to her than anything in the world.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Riley Albert Smith, Sr.; daughter, Jane Smith Carwyle; son, Richard Alton Smith; her grandson, Jay Mayfield; and her three sisters.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Patricia Smith Mayfield (Jim) of Etta, MS and Sylvia Smith Zebrowski; son, Riley Albert Smith, Jr. (Wara); grandchildren, Jeff Thomas (Lisa), David Carwyle (Jill), Jody Mayfield (Margie), Jennifer Arbuckle (Tony), Jeremy Carwyle (Sandra), Janna Moorhead (Kim), James Carwyle, Brad Babb (Dezra), and Keith Babb; as well as 14 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Ruth’s memory may be made to Shiloh Cemetery Fund, c/o Daniel Allen, 31 County Road 429, Oxford, Mississippi 38655.

Betty Jane Smith Hoar - September 06, 1931 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Betty Jane Hoar passed away peacefully at home in Oxford, Mississippi, on Thursday, April 11, 2024. She was 92.
A graveside Gathering of Thanksgiving and Praise will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at College Hill Presbyterian Church, 339 County Road 102, Lafayette County, Mississippi. The service will be officiated by Reverend Jim Ray. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Betty was born September 6, 1931, in Atlanta, Georgia, the only child of Reverend Charles L. and Bettie Usher Smith. Reverend Smith soon accepted a call to First Presbyterian Church in Ripley, Mississippi, where Betty would spend her childhood years.
After graduation from Ripley High School, she earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in music and voice from Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi, and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. At Belhaven, she was president of Kappa Delta Epsilon and won the literary award for three years. She was art editor for the college annual and feature writer for the college publication. Betty would go on to earn her master’s degree in English at the University of Mississippi, holding an assistantship, and was just a few hours short of earning her doctorate.
Betty married Jere Hoar of Oxford in 1954. They moved to Iowa, where Jere earned his doctorate in journalism, before returning to settle in Oxford. Her working career spanned many years. She was a third-grade teacher for Oxford City Schools. Many of her students, even those far away, have remained faithful friends. At Ole Miss, she worked first in the Public Relations Office where she was an accomplished writer with articles published in regional and national magazines and newspapers, and next in the graduate school as a grants writer. She later worked in the Continuing Studies Department, assisting students with their distance learning goals. Later, at the North Mississippi Regional Center in Oxford, she served individuals with developmental disabilities as a social worker and teacher (earning her certification for both through testing only).
Known affectionately as “Miss Betty,” her attributes and talents were many though she preferred to work and do good works in the background. Her voice was one that made you want to sit near her in church. She loved all of the old, traditional Christian hymns, and was reciting their words in whispers even a few days before her death. An accomplished artist, her watercolor paintings are cherished by those who own them. She was also a true Southern cook, and making wonderful meals for her family and friends gave her great pleasure.
She enjoyed many wonderful cats who found their way into her life when she needed them most, most recently her beloved Sammy. She enjoyed listening to her scanner, but not without praying for those involved in the calls, and she only begrudgingly forgave the Oxford Police Department for encrypting their radio transmissions so she couldn’t hear them. She also loved watching the songbirds, hummingbirds, squirrels, and racoons she fed (generously) on her deck.
She was a woman who leaned on her strong faith through many difficult circumstances. She was kind and generous, a friend to the friendless throughout her life, and saw only the best in everyone she met. She led her children to faith in God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the greatest gift a mother could give. And she loved them all with every ounce of her being.
Betty’s survivors include her children, Lu Ann Smith (Tommy) of Oxford, Tom Hoar (Darlene) of Oxford, Ben Hoar (Susan) of Salisbury, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a dear cousin, SaraBeth Crane (Frank) of Clayton, Georgia.
The family wishes to extend its deepest thanks to our dear Mama’s caregivers – Kathie Wilson, Ilean McGlarn, Shirley Dennis, Melony Perry, Pinky Glaspie, and Martha Campbell; and the staff of Baptist Hospice-North Mississippi. You helped give her end-of-life story a happy, comfortable, safe ending as she now rests in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior.
Contributions in Betty’s memory may be made to Friends of North Mississippi Regional Center, 967 Regional Center Drive, Oxford, MS 38655; or College Hill Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 339 CR 102, Oxford MS 38655.

Frances W. Smith - June 22, 1934 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Frances W. Smith, 89, died Thursday, April 4, 2024, at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, MS. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024, from 12:00 noon until 1:30 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, MS. A private graveside will be held at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Frances was born on June 22, 1934, to the late Minnie Stewart and Carl Watts. A lifelong resident of Oxford, MS, she was devoted member of St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, where she was involved with the Women’s Committee, formerly serving as president. Frances worked at The University of Mississippi, first as a secretary at the Dean of Women’s Office, and then as the Administrative Secretary for Bob Towery, the Director of the Student Union. After her retirement, she found solace and peace by escaping often, and at length, to her camper at Sardis Lake. She’d spend months on end at her hideaway, moving the camper only when required and returning home only when necessary. These days were spent soaking in the gentle breeze, hundreds of sunrises and sunsets, and trips around the lake on the pontoon. The only thing Frances found as appealing as these getaways were her frequent visits to Tunica to play the slot machines.
Frances had a philanthropic and giving spirit, finding an outlet to serve others through the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Foundation. Through her involvement with ESA, she volunteered often at Ole Miss home football games, bringing her children along as she worked happily behind the concession stands. It was important to Frances that she led by example in teaching her children to give back to your community and serve others. She volunteered often with a group that performed skits at local nursing homes. Frances would happily don elaborate costumes, sing gleefully at the top of her lungs, and dance with abandon all to bring much needed laughter and reprieve to the residents. In truth, she garnered just as much joy from it as her audience did. Frances is remembered most not for what she did, but how she lived. Vivacious and independent, she spoke her mind often and without holding back. She was fun, upbeat, and marked each day’s success by how many smiles she’d brought to other’s faces. Randal Earl Loyed - June 05, 1946 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Randal Earl Loyed, 77, died Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the Veteran’s Home in Oxford, MS. The funeral will be Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 12:00 noon in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Petermann and Rev. Blain Davis officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2024, from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home, and again on Thursday beginning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow the service in Delay Cemetery.
Mr. Loyed was born on June 5, 1946, in Leeds, AL, to the late Maggie Mae Burns and Robert Earl Loyed. He proudly answered the call to serve his country, bravely serving in the United States Navy in the Dominican Republic. When he returned home, he began working in Construction, perfecting his craft over the years and becoming a superintendent, but in his heart he remained a solider. The camaraderie and brotherhood he found amongst his fellow members inspired his lifelong commitment to the VFW. Mr. Loyed served as Commander of the VFW Oxford Post for 5 years, and the State District Commander for 3 years. During this time, he established the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Oxford and was instrumental in dedicating the Lafayette County Purple Heart Memorial Highway. It was deeply important to Mr. Loyed that those who gave their lives for their countries never be forgotten, and that those who came home had resources and support available to them.
Mr. Loyed and his family were devout members of Delay Baptist Church. In his free time, he appreciated long days spent fishing on the lake, and quiet afternoons in his woodworking shop. He collected antique objects to use in his painting projects, with an eye for picking out rusty saws and skillets from piles of scrap that he would clean and bring back to life with beautiful landscapes and country scenes. He relished in the small and meticulous details of woodworking and painting, working carefully until he was satisfied with the result. Mr. Loyed was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Nancy, together raising three children and experiencing the joy of becoming grandparents. They shared a love for travel, taking annual trips, which they would split between Nancy’s desired sunny and beachy locations, and Mr. Loyed’s preferred cool, mountain retreats. They finally agreed on a favorite location when they took a tour of the 13 colonies, where they created many beloved memories. Though, they never stayed gone long, hurrying back after each trip to share their stories with their children and shower the grandkids in souvenirs. In addition to his parents, Mr. Loyed was preceded in death by his dear wife, Nancy Loyed.
He is survived by his two daughters, Kimberly “Kim” Morgan of Oxford, MS and Lesley Phillips and her husband, John, of Oxford, MS; son, Andrew Byrd of Oxford, MS; sisters, Renae Johnson of Water Valley, MS and Mary “Midge” Britt of Oxford, MS; brother, Robert “Skip” Loyed; six grandchildren, Lauren, Jon-Jon, Makayla, J.T., Kaytlyn, and Alex; and two great-grandchildren, Mason and Olivia.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Mr. Loyed’s memory may be made to Delay Cemetery Fund, c/o Jim Hodge, 1171 Highway 334, Oxford, MS 38655.
In honor of Mr. Loyed’s service, the flag of The United States Navy will be flown at Waller Funeral Home.

Terrence Robert "Terry" Moon - February 17, 1964 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Terrence Robert “Terry” Moon, 60, died Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 24, 2024, from 12:00 noon until 3:00 P.M. in West Hall of Waller Funeral Home.
Terry was born on February 17, 1964, in Lorain, Ohio, to the late Suzanne Cullinan and Charles Edward Moon, Sr. In his town of Oxford, Mississippi, Terry was known as an icon by locals and visitors alike. He was a staple of City Grocery Restaurant for over 20 years, where he devoted his life to serving his guests. More than a waiter, Terry had a special way of making you feel instantly known, seen, and loved. His larger than life personality burst at the seams, as he’d lean over your table and begin frantically drawing a description of the dish you were considering. The experience Terry created for his patrons would become as important and memorable as the meal itself, perfectly embodying the spirit of hospitality and welcoming that Southern cuisine is known for. At the heart of all he did was a desire to connect with others. Whether a celebratory dinner or a quick lunch, he made every occasion memorable and full of light. It was impossible to walk away from an encounter with Terry and not feel his contagious authenticity.
In an article published in Garden & Gun magazine, John T. Edge poignantly describes Terry, “Eyeglasses sliding down his nose, skinny tie cinched loose around his neck, Terry Moon smiles at you in a way that says, ‘Never mind the bollocks.’” He goes on to quote Terry himself, “I am not perfect. I never will be. But here I stand. And here I will stand tomorrow.” That is how Terry showed up every day in life, unapologetically human and hilarious, yet warm and genuine.
Terry lived life in a way that all can learn from, traveling often and constantly surrounding himself with his beloved friends, new and old. He maintained close relationships with his three brothers, whom he thought the world of. Terry was preceded in death by his parents.
Terry is survived by his dear brothers, Tom Moon of Oxford, MS, Tim Moon and his wife, Elizabeth, of Rootstown, OH, and Ted Moon and his wife, Karen, of Greer, SC; two nieces, Melissa Moon of Greer, SC and Sarah Kline-Goodwin of Crozet, VA; nephews, Ryan Patrick Moon of Rootstown, OH and Mark Kline of Akron, OH; and an aunt, Patricia Camarillo and her husband, Rollie, of Amherst, OH.
Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Terry’s memory may be made to Lovepacks, Post Office Box 721, Oxford, Mississippi 38655 or online at https://www.lovepacksoxford.com/donate.

Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 12:30 P.M. at the church. Burial will follow the service in Abbeville Cemetery.
Steve was born on January, 29, 1955, to the late Billie Jane Roy and Jackie Dale Klepzig. A native of Oxford, he attended Lafayette High School, where he graduated as Valedictorian of his class. Continuing his education at The University of Mississippi, Steve earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, before starting his career as a CPA. He was a lifelong fan of Ole Miss Sports, faithfully watching and supporting his team in good seasons and bad. Steve was a talented pianist, honing his skills over the years. He shared his beautiful gift by playing at church, using his talent to lead others in worship. He attended Desoto Hills Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member for many years.
Steve’s greatest calling in life was that of husband, father, and grandfather. Throughout his 44 years of marriage to Pam, he never forgot a single birthday, anniversary, or holiday. Steve looked for any excuse to shower her with gifts, no matter how small. In doing so, he set the finest example for his children on what love should look like and the value in expressing it often. When his kids were young, he showed up at every event and special moment in their lives. He coached his son’s little league teams and never missed a game. Steve was thrilled when his family expanded and he was blessed with grandchildren. When his kids needed help with school pick up, he was the first to volunteer to pick up his granddaughters, taking them for ice cream after. He loved going out to eat, especially Mexican food and trips to his favorite restaurant, Rendezvous in Memphis, but the meals that meant the most to Steve were those shared with his entire family.
Steve is survived by his wife, Pam Klepzig of Hernando, MS; his daughter, Mandy Kent and her husband, Hal, of Hernando, MS; sons, Adam Klepzig of Lexington, TN and Drew Klepzig and his wife, Lindsey, of Hernando, MS; sisters, Becky Kelley of Abbeville, MS and Leah Arrington of Oxford, MS; brother, Joe Klepzig and his wife, Lynn, of Abbeville, MS; and six grandchildren, Cambell, Eli, Kennedy Jane, Dani, Forrest, and Stella.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the deceased's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, funeral services, and surviving family members. They can also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the death and allow them to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help to personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be sure to check their submission guidelines and deadlines beforehand.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is remembered in the way you want.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. You can include anecdotes, quotes, or humorous stories that reflect the deceased's personality and spirit.

How do I find old obituaries?
