Laura S. Keeney - May 11, 1954 - May 14, 2024

Departed: 05/14/2024 (Newport)
Obituary Preview: Laura Song Keeney departed this world on Wednesday, May 14, 2024, after a prolonged illness that she didn’t let get her down. Laura was a free spirit and an artist in every sense of the word. She created a life of adventure and quiet service to others. Laura was a gardener, painter, musician, dancer, lover of animals, children, and a champion for the elderly and those with special needs.
The daughter of Hope and Bill Bradbury, Laura was born in Schenectady, NY and moved with the family to Barneveld (Trenton Falls), NY in 1958. Her childhood was idyllic. She grew up surrounded by a running brook, the woods and her mother’s gardens. Laura held these aspects of her youth dear throughout her life. She loved to swim and would get into the water anywhere, anytime, no matter the season or the weather. Hinkley Lake and the neighbor’s freshwater pool were favorite spots. At various times in her life, she lived in the woods, preferring the quiet that nature would provide. Her love of flowers motivated her to become a Master Gardner and, along with her mother, she worked tirelessly to build large gardens at the family home.
Laura’s accomplishments were many. She graduated from Poland Central School in 1972, she attended Allegheny College, and transferred to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA where she received her B.A. in English. She went on to complete her M.A. in Recreational Therapy at SUNY Cortland. After college, she worked locally with teens at George Junior Republic and then moved South to Georgia, where she was the Recreation Director at the Pruitt Heritage Nursing Home in Athens.
Laura assisted her late husband, Roger Keeney, who was blind, in getting his PHD from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. Roger developed new sports programs for the blind and Laura worked with him consulting with organizations to become ADA compliant. They were contracted by the State of Florida to help design a project in Fort Meyers, FL, and also worked in Belize, South America. A favorite photo shows the two of them receiving an award for their work from President Carter and his wife Rosalynn.
Horses were a passion for Laura as a young girl. She loved to ride and learned on her horse Snowball, and in her teens, owned a horse named Sir Brodie who she would ride in competition. Jumping was her love. Music and dance came naturally to Laura. After attending Ballroom Dance classes at the Fort Schuyler Club in Utica she was asked to be the Assistant Instructor and after college taught dance classes at a local community college. She studied piano and loved playing if an instrument was nearby. She even had a piano trucked into a camp she had on property that she owned in the woods near Cortland. An avid and talented singer, her voice could be heard at the many churches she attended over the years, and at Allegheny College she was the lead singer in a popular rock band that was the school favorite. They were asked to come back to perform for her class reunion.
Laura was always a spiritual seeker and student. Her apartment was filled with books on widely varied topics from native plants to geology, art, music, and religious teachings. When she returned to Upstate, NY in 2006 she became active in many local churches. Her Master Gardener training led her to Volunteer at the Cornell Cooperative Extension gardens in Oriskany, NY. While there, she worked to create accessible gardening spaces with participants from UCP and worked with children from the House of Good Shepherd and ARC. Spreading gardening knowledge to those with special needs was her joy.
Always an animal lover, Laura had several dogs over the years that she cherished. Most recently she rescued a Japanese Hen, that she named Lily. The two were constant companions over the past five years. Lily loved riding with Laura in the car and when held by Laura she would “purr” and fall asleep in her arms. Theirs was a special and gentle bond.
Laura is survived by her siblings, Jane Bradbury (husband, Ernest Norris) of Barneveld, NY, William Chase Bradbury (wife, Dana Case) of San Diego, CA and Dean Bradbury of Portland, ME. She is also survived by her nieces and nephew Kelly Norris, Mackenzie Silver, Chase Bradbury, and Olivia Bradbury, and by her good friend Roger “Will” Lee.
Donations may be made in Laura Keeney’s name to the Oneida County Cooperative Extension Parker Scripture Botanical Gardens, 121 Second Street, Oriskany, NY 13421, and the Siegenthaler Hospice Center, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413.
