McConnell, 70, a former resident of Lake Como, NY passed away Friday April 8, 2022 at home in Auburn, NY.    Dennis was born February 24, 1952 in Cortland a son of Halsey & Lucille Munn McConnell. He was a graduate of Homer H.S. Class of 1971.    Dennis loved an adventure and liked to travel about the US and had a variety of employment.     He is survived by a brother Dan & his wife Sharen of McLean; sister Sylvia Reed of Connecticut and brother-in-law Bill Lawrence of Connecticut, several nieces, nephews and    his caregivers Jennie Lancaster and Lionel Walker. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Boyd McConnell, sister Sonia McConnell Lawrence, niece Kattie McConnell and nephew Brian Lawrence.    There are no services scheduled at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Interment will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Sempronius, NY.   Arrangements are with the Wade Funeral & Cremation Service, Moravia, NY

Obituary Preview: Matthew Cory "Matt" Blay, born on Dec.3,1981 passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 2, 2022.    Matt battled several serious medical issues over the past 6 years. Despite that, he always displayed determination and courage, meeting everything with a smile and a laugh. Matt fought the best he could right up to the end.     He has joined his dad-Reggie Blay, his grandparents-Kenneth Pearsall Sr., Oscar Blay Sr., Arlene Blay, 2 uncles Robert & Oscar Blay Jr and aunt Starr Blay.  It is believed by those who knew him best that he is currently fishing with one of his best friends Joe Horn, playing baseball and retoning his soccer skills.    Matt obtained his GED and attended CCC. Matt was employed as a cook at a number of well-known local restaurants and eateries.    In addition to cooking Matt loved animals, music varying from classical, 80's, rock, etc.,watching anime and his Buffalo Bills and fishing. Matt also had a deep faith and love of God. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and had attended Crysalis; had been a representative for several years at the youth conferences in Washington, DC along with camp experiences at Casowasco and Aldersgate. Words have been used to describe Matt that include: caring, loving, gentle, blunt, truthful, funny, intelligent, free spirited, protective, kind, a blessing.... He touched many lives and didn't even know it.     Matt will be missed and never forgotten by his mom-Dottie Pearsall Blay; his sister-Niki Blay-Justian and a number of uncles, aunts, and especially his true partner in crime-Gramma Evelyn Pearsall.     A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday April 9, 2022 from 1:00-5:00 pm at the Moravia VFW Post #7127.     Memorial donations may be made to the CUMC Scholarship Fund, MVFD Rescue Squad or the Cayuga County SPCA.    Matt, you will never be forgotten and we will be together again one day. Bush, 83 of Groton, and a former resident of Cortland, passed away Friday April 1, 2022 at the Groton Community Health Care Center.   Sarah was born February 11, 1939 in Richford, a daughter of Grover & Jeanette Morehouse.    She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Bush Sr. in 1999 and their daughter Tina and is survived by 1 son-Kenneth Bush Jr., 3 daughters-Susan, Sherri & Debbie, several grandchildren & great grandchildren   Calling hours will be held Monday April 11, 2022 from 3-5:00 pm at the Wade Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Moravia, NY with a gathering to follow at the Locke Department. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer at the convenience of the family. In Lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Locke Fire Department

Beverly A Grobelny - Unknown - March 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Beverly Ann Grobelny, 75, of 25 Morse Dr., Moravia, NY passed away on Sunday March 6, 2022 surrounded by loved ones and friends, after a long battle with heart and kidney disease.  Beverly was born at Auburn Hospital on January 1,1947 the daughter of J. Bernard Conklin and Grace Branch Conklin.
She was in the graduating class of 1966 at Moravia High School. She then married Fredrick Grobelny on June 15, 1968 and started their family with the birth of their first child in 1971.  In her early years, Beverly worked at Smith Corona and Crescent Corset in Cortland until their closings. She then was a Nurses aide at Howd's Nursing Home in Moravia and her final  place of work was working at Glenhouse Eldercare until her retirement.
Many things brought Beverly joy. She painted ceramics, babysat her grandchildren regularly, went berry picking to make homemade jams, and most of all going to push the button at the casino. She also loved planning elaborate parties and dinners for her family to come together. She was honored to be at and help plan both her granddaughters’ weddings. She always was waiting for the next holiday or birthday that she could help put together. She especially loved Christmas. She would listen to Buddy Holly and the Beach Boys occasionally, but most of the year she had Christmas movies on and baked goodies for her grandkids.    Beverly was a beautiful soul. She always wanted to try and make everyone happy. She had a spunk like no other and a willingness to help anyone and everyone she could, regardless if that meant she couldn’t help herself. She will be deeply missed by all those who loved and cherished her.    Beverly is survived by 2 brothers, Stephen (Sue) Conklin of Moravia and their children Christopher and Elizabeth, and John (Julie) Conklin of Genoa. Her 3 children, Darnell (Gary) Nye of Auburn, Darrick (Jackie) Grobelny of Moravia, and Devon Grobelny and his girlfriend Sonja Fenner also of Moravia. She is also survived by a granddaughter whom she raised as her own, Shawna (David) Dailey of Moravia, granddaughters Samantha (Zachary) Marintez of Auburn, Madeline, Ashley, Natalie, Whitney, and Abigail Grobelny all of Moravia, 1 grandson Cody Nye of Auburn and 2 great grandchildren Olivia Dailey and Draeson Dailey who was the light of her life. She is also survived by aunts and uncles and cousins from all around. Beverly was predeceased by her husband, Fred Grobelny, her parents Bernie and Grace Conklin, a grandson Terry Grobelny and his mother Christine Elser, her uncle Gerald Conklin and his wife Ann, a cousin Dwayne Conklin, her beloved Dog Breeze, and her cats, Smudge, Pinky, and Pumpkin. Calling hours will be held at 7:00-9:00pm Thursday March 10, 2022 at the Wade Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Moravia, NY,  with a celebration of life to be determined at a later date. Beverly loved her fur babies very much and always was one to take in strays, people and animals alike. In her honor, we ask any donations be made to the ASPCA of the Finger Lakes. We want to give a special thanks to 2 very special people in her life, Autumn Meddaugh and Jennifer Sovocool for being there to help her granddaughter care for her in her last days.

Obituary Preview: William A. "Billy" Smith  died on Wednesday February 23, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY after a short illness.
Billy was born August 16, 1961 the son of Robert A. & Maxine R. Casey Smith.  He grew up in Moravia, graduated Moravia Central School Class of 1979 and has been working for the Village of Moravia Public Works Department until his illness.
Billy married Karen Wagner Smith and together have made their home in Locke, NY.
The family will welcome friends, neighbors & co-workers at a visitation from 1pm-2pm Saturday March 19, 2022 at the Moravia VFW Post #7127. A Celebration of Billy's Life will be held from 2pm to 3pm Saturday following visitation at VFW Post #7127 Moravia.

Obituary Preview: Madeline Hart Carey Madeline Anne Carey, 92, of Locke, NY, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022.    Madeline was born March 12, 1929 in Cortland Memorial Hospital to Harold H. Hart and Julia Kathryn Ward. She grew up in Moravia and graduated from Moravia Central High School and Powelson Business Institute in Syracuse. She began working at Kilbourne’s Farm Implement Business in Moravia, NY. She married Gerald Francis Carey in October of 1949 and they started their life together, raising 7 children on the family farm in Locke. Gerald and Madeline were members of the Locke Grange, where they provided entertainment after the meetings.  Madeline played the piano as Gerald played the fiddle. In later years they were members of The Old Tyme Fiddlers Association where Madeline played keyboard. She and Gerald provided musical entertainment for local organizations as well.     Madeline served as the Town of Locke historian for 20 years and contributed in the writing of the Town of Locke New York 1802 – 2002 Bicentennial book. She was a  member of the Cayuga-Owasco Lakes Historical Society for several years and was also a member of The Dutch Settlers Society of Albany.  She was a member of the Locke Valley Home Dems.      Madeline was a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Groton, NY and served as a sacristan.           Madeline was an accomplished seamstress, making many of her clothes as well as beautiful dresses for her daughters.  She also knitted items for family and friends, including many lovely Irish sweaters.  Her Irish heritage was very important to her.  She did extensive genealogy research on every branch of her family and Gerald’s.  Over the years she came to know many Irish relatives in both the United States and Ireland.  Madeline always enjoyed gathering with family and friends.  She was always the life of the party.      Madeline was predeceased by her parents, her husband Gerald, of 67 years, a son, Thomas, and a granddaughter, Carolyn Carey.    She is survived by her daughter, Anne (Albert) Mantey and their children, Rusty (Amy), Julie DeWitt, Paul (Sabrina), and Keith (Courtney); son, John (Beverly) and their children, Jennifer (Kevin) Grey, Maria and Adam Carey; son, Bill Carey; daughter, Maureen (Steve) Shaw, and their children, Brian, Rob, and Erin (Michael) Braid; daughter, Eileen (Charles) Rankin and their children, Michael (Elizabeth), Marie (Steven) Rankin-Jester and Helena Rankin; and daughter, Katey (Dave) Romancik and their children, Katrina (Frankie) DeFrancesco, Jake (Rachael) and Brad (Jamie) Romancik. Madeline is also survived by her seventeen great-grandchildren, sister, Joanne Neville, niece, Marlene J. Neville, and one first cousin, Harold Ward and several other cousins.   A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon, Thursday Feb.24 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Groton, NY.   Family and friends may call at the Wade Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Moravia, NY on Wed. Feb. 23 from 5 to 7pm.  People are encouraged to wear a mask for the services.  Friends are asked to consider Mass card donations to St. Anthony’s Church or memorial donations to the Four Town First Aid Squad, Moravia, NY or Locke Fire Dept. Rescue.

Obituary Preview: James Burdick "JB" Kemp, 71 of Locke, NY passed away Friday January 14, 2022 at his home with family by his side.      Jim was born June 1, 1950 a son of the late Clarence & Lucy Tracy Kemp. He was predeceased by brothers-Herb, Jay & Roger; sister-Marie Lewis & brother-in-law Ron Bennett.       Surviving are his loving wife of 42 years-Cheri Bell Kemp; children-Sally (Robert) Marshall, Tammy (Chad) Poli, Albert Kemp and Chris Kemp; 12 grandchildren-Renee, Brynn, Jadyn, Cailyn, MaKenna, Alyssa, Gavin, Carter, Deagan, Marcus, Seth & Alexandra; siblings-Joyce Kemp, Trina Bennett, Virginia "Vee" Kemp, Albert (Sheila) Kemp and Ronald (Patricia) Kemp; 12 nephews & 16 nieces. Special people in his life were Abby Decker & Jessica Dean.      He was a HS graduate and served in the Navy from 1971-1975 during the VietNam Conflict. After an Honorable Discharge he was employed as a farmer, with Havestore Storage Systems and as a welder for 25 years with McQuay International in Auburn, NY until he retired.      Jim was a member of the Moravia Volunteer Fire Company as a Fire Policeman, as well as a driver for Four Town First Aid Squad for many years.      The family will receive friends and guests 5:00-7:00 pm Friday January 21, 2022 at the Wade Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Moravia. A brief service with Military Honors will follow at 7:00pm.      If you wish to make a donation in his memory, the family has requested to do so with Hospice of The Finger Lakes or Four Town First Aid Squad.      Jim's family would like to recognize the Locke Fire Department and Four Town First Aid for their continued support during his time of illness.

She was born on December 14, 1945 a daughter of Leo and Wanetta (Long) Flick.
She was a lifelong resident of Moravia, a graduate of Moravia Central School and a devoted house/ farm wife and mother. Lenora is survived by her husband of 55 years Bruce E. Fay and three children-Barbara (Kean) Flynn of Sempronius, Brenda (Tammy) Fay-Sadler of Shortsville
and Becky (Sean) Nesbitt of Moravia. Also by her five grandchildren-Jacob Flynn of Washington DC, Jesse (Hannah) Flynn, Brad and Derek Tuttle and Tori Nesbitt all from Moravia. and many nieces, nephews & cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents Leo and Wanetta Flick and her four siblings-Janice (Linus) Smith, Norman (Buzzy) Flick, Wesley Flick, and Gary Flick.
Lenora is known for all her volunteer work for the Moravia Fire Dept. and MFD Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as Past President and Secretary. She loved to help the community..
She loved bowling, loved being at the farmers market where she loved to visit with our community. She was also known by many as Grandma “COW” or Fritz.
We ask for contributions to be made to Four Town First Aid Squad or Country Acres Pet Service. Services will be Sat. Jan. 22,2022 at 1:00 pm at Sempronius Baptist Church, 6500 Frazier Rd., Sempronius, NY

She was born on May 29, 1936 and was a lifelong resident of Moravia. She was the daughter of Harold ‘Duffy’ and Isabelle (Morris) Defendorf.      Joyce graduated from Moravia Central School in 1954. She worked at Modern Market in Moravia for more than 50 years. She also worked part time at Greene’s Dry Cleaners. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Moravia and attended services until health issues prohibited it. Joyce loved working at Modern Market and enjoyed seeing all the people she had come to know. After retirement, she missed seeing and interacting with all her co-workers and customers.    Joyce was an avid fan of the Yankees and Syracuse Orange. She enjoyed reading Danielle Steel books and the Citizen's crossword puzzles. She loved being surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She faithfully watched her favorite shows, Days of Our Lives and Bluebloods. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and bowled for Modern Market’s team. She was a member of the Moravia Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. In her later years, she enjoyed playing mahjong and scrolling Facebook on her iPad.     Joyce was a genuinely kind and good-hearted person. She was always humble and unassuming. If you knew Joyce, you'd know her gentle strength. She was a remarkable woman, and her absence will be deeply felt by everyone who knew and loved her.     Joyce is survived by her children, John (Cindy) Hawley of Verona, NY, Judi (Russ) Sampson of Locke, NY, Jeffrey (Julie) Hawley of Raleigh, NC, Jackie Hawley, Jodi (Bob) Sovocool of Moravia; a sister, Maryruth Shields of Moravia; a brother, Duffy (Lynne) Defendorf of Sunrise Beach,TX; sister-in-law Nancy (Cliff) Wayne Augst, of Cortland, NY and brother-in-law Harold ‘Pete’ Ward of Bremerton, WA.  She has ten grandchildren, Dr. Ryan Hawley, Emily and Sara Sampson, Julianna Hawley-Gagnon, Joanna Satterley, Brittany and Brett Hawley-Coit, Amy, Bobby and Justin Sovocool; and eight great grandchildren.     Joyce was predeceased by her loving husband of fifty six years Sherwood ‘Jack’ Hawley, and her sister Louise Mead.     At Joyce’s request and due to COVID-19 concerns, there will be no calling hours. William "Bill" Tracy - Unknown - December 23, 2021

Obituary Preview: William C. Tracy, 85, of Sempronius passed away after fighting many health problems on Dec. 23, 2021. Bill was born May 19, 1936 in Cortland, NY, the son of Orville and Vira Downes Tracy.
Bill graduated from Moravia Central School and served three years in the Marines.  He bought Sand Hill Farm in 1972.  Bill loved farming and was a hard worker in all that he did.  He loved being on his tractor and working the fields.  He enjoyed  the old 2-cylinder John Deere tractors and going to all the farm auctions in the area.  In recent years, he enjoyed riding his Gator with his grandson, Jim Bob.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Georgianna, his son James and four daughters, Wendy Tracy (Shawn Socker), Julie (Shawn) Becker,  Amy (Patrick) Kehoe, and Suzie Tracy (Chris Brown),  12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Marijane Seamans.
He was predeceased by his parents, and one sister, Beverly Sharpsteen.
A graveside burial service will be held in the spring at Sand Hill Cemetery, Sempronius that adjoins his farm.  Calling hours will be held at Wade Funeral Home, Moravia on Jan. 8, 2022 from 3-4 P.M.

He is survived by the love of his life Trina "Bummy"; daughters-Mindy (Josh) and Tonya Bennett and her fiance Rob Drake; also survived by his 4 loving granddaughters, who called him PAPA - Kayla "Kada" "Marcus", Lita "Petie", Natalie "Nattie Newt", Daisy "Critter" and his dog Cloie Pup; his brothers-Robert (Betty) of Otego, NY and Kelly (Debra) of Fort Walton Beach, FL; sisters-Darlene Bennett (Ken) of Summerhill. NY and Bettjane (Ed) Lee of Truxton, NY; also many sisters & brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins, who called him "Mr. B"
He was preceded in death by his parents-Richard and Margaret Kiser Bennett; brothers-Darren, Richard Jr. and Mike.

She was predeceased by her sister, Janice Carnicelli.  She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Dennis Shaver, her brother, Frank (Mary) Morrow of South Carolina, a sister, Eva Ferrin of Groton, 1 daughter Ginger (Joe) McQueeney of Auburn, 4 sons; Donald Raner of Moravia, Dennis Shaver of Ovid, NY, Thomas (Shelly) Shaver of Alden, NY and Donald Shaver of Syracuse; 9 grandchildren, Cory (Laura) Raner, Christina (Rob) McQueeney, Joey McQueeney, Nicholas McQueeney, Tyler Raner, William Shaver, Sarah Shaver, and Julia Shaver; 5 Great Grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: William “Bill” A. Sheppard of Moravia, NY, age 75, passed away unexpectedly on December 6th, 2021.  Bill was born January 12, 1946 to George II and Amy Sheppard.  Bill was employed by the State of New York for 34 years and retired from Auburn Correctional Facility.
Bill loved the land, aside from spending time with his children and grandchildren, he most enjoyed working the farm, alongside his son, and did so all his life.  Bill was predeceased by his parents, George II and Amy Sheppard, as well as both of his brothers George III and John Sheppard.  Bill is survived by his daughter Lori Sheppard, (fiancé Peter Crane) of Auburn.  His son, Michael (Suzanne) Sheppard of Moravia.  His granddaughters Skylar and Amber Dutcher, and his grandson Jeffrey Sheppard whom Bill lovingly referred to as “mustache man”, all of Auburn.  And the mother of his two children, Cherie Sheppard, of Camillus.
Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Monday, December 13th, 2021 in the Owasco Reformed Church. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Owasco Reformed Church.

Janice had been employed briefly with New York Telephone and Moravia High School as an attendance taker. She attended St. Patrick's Church.
There are no scheduled services for Janice. Spring interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Moravia.

Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Shirley Ann Nadge on 12/8/21.  Born to Vera and H. Burgess Jones 9/3/35, she grew  up in Marathon with her six brothers and sisters.  She had a long, successful career in the insurance industry, operating Nadge and Copley Insurance Services with partner Robert Copley in Moravia.  She enjoyed working with her customers and fulfilling their insurance needs.  Her excellent pies were prized by both family and the organizations she donated them to.  She loved landscaping, transforming her backyard into a garden oasis.  After she retired, she moved to Florida with her fiancé Joe Caza and enjoyed the warm temperatures and living close to her daughter Catherine and her family.  Above all, she cherished her family. She was a wonderful mother and role model, and she went above and beyond to make each one of us feel special and loved.  We will miss her dearly.
She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Dorothea Jones, Marie Dedrick, Harold Jones, Howard Jones and David Jones. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Betsy Bregard, children Valerie Gonzalez (Jorge), Catherine Wallin (Danny), Linda Aldridge and Gregory Nadge; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the Wade Funeral Home, 22 Church Street Moravia on Monday, December 20 at 11 AM- noon with funeral services to follow. Spring interment will be in Marathon Ceemetery.

Obituary Preview: Austin Leonard Mott, III, age 79, passed away or as he would say "kicked the bucket" on November 27, 2021. He was born on April 10, 1942 in Moravia, NY. His interest in the hospitality industry led him to the University of Denver, where he pursued a concentration in Hotel/Restaurant Administration. Austin graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. This was the start of his long and rewarding career.
Austin retired as President and CEO of Visit Florida. During his career he oversaw operations at Hotel Hershey, Hershey, PA; Sandestin, Destin, FL; Don Cesar Beach Resort and Spa, St. Petersburg, FL; Sea Pines Plantation Co., Hilton Head, SC; Elbow Beach Resort, Bermuda; South Seas Plantation Resort, Captiva Island, FL; and Palmas Del Mar, Puerto Rico.
He served as President of the Florida Hotel & Motel Association and was awarded the honor of Hotelier of the Year in 1992. Austin was also inducted into the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame for his contribution to tourism in the Sunshine State.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Elizabeth Mott; step-mother, Claire Mott; and nephew, Jack Mott.
Austin is survived by his wife, Pebbie Mott; daughters, Coby Eldridge (Robert) and Katie McHugh (Patrick); grandchildren, Coulter Eldridge, Pate Eldridge, Aidan Eldridge, Mackenzie McHugh, Caymen McHugh and Amelia Eldridge; brothers, John Mott (Ellie), Mel Mott (Jeanne) and Roger Mott (Debbie); nieces, Jennifer Mott, Jane Perry, Alex Horton and Nicole Burnim; and several great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Berry Highland Memorial, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37919. A funeral service will take place at 2:00 PM followed by committal in Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery.
