Janice S. Barnes - August 15, 1941 - April 02, 2022

Departed: 04/02/2022 (Harrisburg)
Obituary Preview: Janice S. (Simler) Barnes, 80, Swatara Township, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Columbia Cottages, Palmyra.
Born August 15, 1941 in Novinger, Missouri, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Shirley (Cauby) Simler and was a graduate of Kirksville University, Missouri.
She was the wife of Steven M. Barnes, whom she married on August 14, 1966.
Janice was a retired English teacher from several schools where she was involved in drama club and directed the school musicals.   She also used her teaching skills tutoring English as a second language to students at Penn State Harrisburg.
A 45 year member of Paxton Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg, she was a valuable asset to that congregation.  From setting up receptions, ushering, and caring for the gardening to teaching Sunday School and serving as an Elder, Janice cherished taking care of her church and her beloved church family.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, walking, being outdoors, Elvis Presley, and watching the Hallmark Channel and was a season ticket holder to the Hershey Theatre and the Harrisburg Symphony Pops Series.
She was a member of the Astro Chapter, OES for over 55 years; the Lenker Manor Women’s Club, the Penn State Faculty Wives Club, was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and was a former Girl Scout Leader.
As a devoted mother, Janice was wholeheartedly involved in all her daughters’ activities in school.  Her daughters will fondly remember her teaching them what was important in life:  time management, work ethic and to always finish what you start.  Mostly, she taught them the importance of spreading kindness:  through giving compliments or a sweet note or small bouquet of flowers.
Surviving is her loving husband, Steven M. Barnes; her 3 daughters:  Julie B. Kozora (and her husband, Steven), Prospect, PA, Stephanie B. Born March 10, 1946 in Reading, he was the son of the late John and Vera (Pociechowski) Mazurkiewicz, and was a graduate of Reading Central Catholic High School.
Following high school, Michael joined the US Marine Corps where he studied basic drafting and land surveying.  After his discharge in 1968, he pursued his career with various engineering companies, doing freelance surveying and researching properties in his spare time.  He ultimately went to work as a Registered Land Surveyor for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, retiring in 2019.

Michael was a member of the American Legion Post 945, Highspire and the Sierra Club.  An avid reader, he was a supporter of the Dauphin County Library.  Clever and detail oriented, he meticulously tracked information and statistics. He will be remembered by his sons as a gentle, patient father, who often surprised them with his remembrances of small details that others might have missed.  Michael was accomplished, but humble, not one to brag of his intelligence or achievements, but content to listen to those around him share their stories.  His quiet confidence was never more evident than in his final words, “I am between a rock and a hard place, but I smashed them both.”

James R. Derrick - February 17, 1955 - December 17, 2021

Departed: 12/17/2021 (Harrisburg)
Obituary Preview: James R. Derrick February 17, 1955 - December 17, 2021
James “Jim” R. Derrick, the 66 year old realtor, Civil War aficionado and beloved father of three, left this world for a better place on the evening of Friday, December 17th at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, PA. He passed peacefully surrounded by a few of his closest family members.
Born February 17th, 1955 in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of late great real estate power couple, June (Grubb) and Stuard Derrick. He was the middle child of three brothers and was predeceased by his younger brother, Tom.
He is survived by his older brother, Stuard, and by his three children, James, William and Thomas, their mother, Nancy Stokes, his daughters-in-law, Mallory and Lauren, and his six grandchildren, Roman, Isla, Sloane, Theodore, Eleonora and Elias.
Jim graduated from Harrisburg Academy then Boston University with an undergraduate degree (and deep love) in history, which he pursued on a personal level throughout his life. He chose, however, to follow his family into the real estate business and then went on to work as a commercial loan officer. During his tenure as a banker, he moved his family to Waynesboro, PA, where he raised his children, and earned his MBA from Mount Saint Mary’s University. Later in his life he moved back to Camp Hill where he continued to work in real estate while also working part-time at Lowe’s in Mechanicsburg, which he loved.
Jim was a man of faith and avid reader of the Bible and history, particularly American history and politics. He loved to hike and chose the battlefields of Gettysburg as his favorite spot and place of internal and spiritual reflection. In doing so over many years he became an expert of the location on nearly every facet. He was a phenomenal cook, cigar connoisseur, had great style, a goofy but very witty sense of humor and an infectious laugh.
He was a reserved man and lived a remote lifestyle, but his departure from earth will be felt by many. He will be forever remembered by his family as a stoic, kind and patient man constantly in deep and critical thought.
There will be a brief service and burial at his gravesite on Tuesday, December 28th at 1:00PM in St. John’s Cemetery on the corner of Trindle Rd and St. John’s Church Rd in Mechanicsburg followed by a luncheon at Stock's Manor.

Noemy Martinez - September 23, 1944 - December 05, 2021

Departed: 12/05/2021 (Harrisburg)
Obituary Preview: Noemy Martinez: Mother, Salvadoran cuisine expert/foodie, and lifelong sales person passed away on Sunday 12/5 peacefully during her sleep. She was born in Santa Ana, El Salvador in September, 1944.
Persistence, hard work, and countless sacrifices allowed her to live a life full of accomplishments.
Her life was largely defined by the loss of her parents at 16 years of age in a country that did not have a social system to provide and support orphans. She would later suffer through the loss of her only daughter to cancer. Life always threw different challenges her way but she always persevered regardless of the obstacles.
After losing her parents, she initially got some support from her older sister in Santa Ana and aunt in San Salvador. Noemy would not settle to be a nanny or maid, and realized that she had to search for better opportunities on her own in San Salvador.
As an attractive young woman, Noemy had to learn how to quickly fend for herself in a world where all the cards are stacked against a pretty, young teenage orphan. Noemy never settled when there were no opportunities and she took no shortcuts.
She had indomitable faith in the Catholic church and always believed in herself.
She made the most of her social nature and strong people skills to start a lifelong career in sales. The Salvadoran civil war and poor economy made her choose this field, as it allowed her to have the flexibility to also take care of her kids, Jorge, Doris (QED), Ricardo and David.
Noemy always yearned to be a mother in a large family. Along the way her dream was for her children to become professionals, a goal which was achieved by all three sons due to her endless support, continuous sacrifices and the ‘can-do’ ‘go-get-it’ attitude she instilled in her kids. Neither Noemy nor Julian had completed even High School in El Salvador, so getting a US college education for all their first-generation migrant kids was quite an accomplishment.
Noemy met and married Jorge Julian Martinez (QED); they met back at work in 1967, married him in Santa Ana in 1968 and had her first-born in San Salvador in 1969. She would have 3 more kids and a miscarriage the following years. Tragedy hit early in her motherhood quest: Noemy lost her only daughter to leukemia when she was only 11 years old.
Noemy and Julian remained together to the very end for 53 years.
After the passing of Doris, as well as due to the civil war and lack of economic opportunities, Noemy left El Salvador to join Julian who had fled to the USA a couple of years earlier in the early 80's.
Much like other undocumented immigrants she worked all kinds of odd jobs to support the family, but never settled. She was always looking for better opportunities despite her initial lack of English skills or legal documents.
Thanks to the Reagan immigration amnesty program, both Julian and Noemy went on to become US legal residents and later US Citizens. Noemy used to say she was so proud of her US citizenship and that she did not want to ever go back to live in El Salvador, or even dead.
Noemy loved talking about the many stories she lived, and people she met as a sales person. She loved to make pupusas and “sopa de patas” and would share them with everyone. She believed food and water should never be denied to anyone.
Noemy leaves behind her three grown children: Jorge, Ricardo and David as well as 5 grandchildren: Xochil, Nawa, Isabel, Sandra and Michael. All of whom loved her dearly.
Noemy, we carry you in our heart and your memory will never vanish.

Edmund G. Roberts - November 20, 1944 - November 15, 2021

Departed: 11/15/2021 (Harrisburg)
Obituary Preview: With his beloved wife by his side, Edmund G. Roberts, 76, Harrisburg, went to be with his Heavenly Savior on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Holy Spirit Hospital.
Born November 20, 1944 in Trinidad, he was the son of the late Gordon and Sylvia (Roberts) Morris and was retired from the State Department of Revenue.
He was a member of Breath of Life Ministries, Harrisburg, where he regularly played the congas for services.
After his retirement, Eddie found that he did not like to be idle. Loving horses from an early age, he worked as a barn helper at Penn National Race Course and other local barns and had been a Telebet call taker at the Race Course. Additionally, he worked in the produce departments of several local stores. Growing up in Trinidad, his grandmother sold vegetables at the market, and gave him the knowledge to grow his own and manage grocery produce. Truly, he loved being outdoors, growing his fruits and vegetables, flowers and plants, and just enjoying his backyard and talking with friends on his front porch. During football season, when he wasn’t outside, he could be found watching (and often yelling at) the television when his Steelers were playing. Always active, he played soccer when he was younger, and still enjoyed walking, biking and roller skating with his grandchildren, who often referred to him as their best friend. He loved Soca/Calypso music, and enjoyed playing it constantly, sometimes fairly loudly. Eddie was well known as a great story teller, unless you asked him about his secret curry recipe.
While still living with their parents in Harrisburg, Eddie and his brother Fitzroy would drive up to NYC.  They had a spot on 125th Street in Harlem where they would set up tables and sell wigs. He and Roy would cut the wigs while people had them on. Doing this made the brothers a lot of money and made many people very happy.
He is survived by his wife of over 25 years: Ruth A. (Johnson) Roberts; his children: Rachel Morris, Trinidad, Edmund Williams, Harrisburg, Rasheed Wyant, Greece, and Dominic Lawson (and his wife, Kirsten), Harrisburg; 7 siblings: Victor Morris, Trinidad, Ann Whiteman (and her husband, John), Virginia, Lynn Stevenson (and her husband, Burnie), Harrisburg, Fitzroy Morris, New Jersey, Dianne Bissoon, Florida, Yvonne Jones (and her husband, James), Harrisburg, and Harold Morris Clark; 8 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and dear friends.
Services will be held 11:00 am Monday, November 22, 2021 at his church, 6340 Derry Street, Harrisburg, with Pastor Bruce J. Smith, Sr officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 10:00 am until 11:00 am Monday.
Burial will be in Shoop’s Garden of Rest, Harrisburg.
Kimmel Funeral Home, Harrisburg, is handling arrangements.
