Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community of the deceased person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for those grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also be involved in writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or memorial funds established in their name.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details, aiming for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased person. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful to those reading it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication fee.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may have a flat fee. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a unique opportunity to tell your own story and leave a lasting legacy.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some personality and humor into the writing. This can help capture the essence of the person who has passed away.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the deceased person's life that you're unsure how to address in the obituary, consider consulting with family members or a trusted advisor for guidance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, incorporating meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and emotion to an obituary. Just be sure to verify the accuracy of any copyrighted material before publication.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Online obituaries may be published immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes – but it depends on the publication or platform. If you need to make corrections or updates, contact the relevant party as soon as possible.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple newspapers?

You'll need to submit the obituary separately to each newspaper, following their individual guidelines and payment structures.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of a traditional obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to create a virtual memorial page where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences.

How do I find old obituaries from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archived copies of old newspapers that you can access.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?
