Obituary Preview: Marion F. Bailey, 87, of Urbana, Ohio passed peacefully at home on Thursday, May 16, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Marion was born on April 29, 1937, in Urbana to the late Albert and Hazel (Neese) Bailey.
Marion retired from the city of Urbana after 30 years of dedicated service. He was the equipment operator for Moore’s Excavating and Mad River Township. He worked part time at the Urbana Skating Rink as a Floor guard. Marion raised and showed Rex Rabbits for over 25 years. He also served in the Ohio National Guard.
Cars were Marion’s true passion. He was a devoted member of the Champaign Cruisers Car Club. Racing was the core of his being. He built and drove dragsters for the Vertigo Race Team, built and drove several stock cars at Shady Bowl Raceway and several other tracks. He visited 7 different NASCAR tracks on multiple occasions. Marion was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan. In his honor, feel free to join us to celebrate his passion by wearing your Dale Earnhardt attire.
Marion is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Carolyn Sue (Dillon) Bailey; daughter, Robbin (Brian Erwin) King; sons, Mike (Angie) Bailey, Greg (Mindy) Bailey; grandchildren, Erica Poole, Michael (Becca) Bailey, Makayla (Vicky) Reed, Austin (Julia Grabill) Hicks, Brian (Kristen) Bailey, Matt Bailey, Jason (Leah) Bailey, Drew Loveless, Heather Bailey, Wendy King, Cody King; great-grandchildren, Chasen (Grace) Poole, David Bailey, Rachael Dulaney, Holden Bailey, Eurie Reed, Yuna Reed, Phineas Reed, Ella Hicks, Hannah Bailey, Gavin Bailey, Tucker Bailey, Weston Bailey, Greyson Bailey, Gracelyn Loveless, Savanna Loveless, Ethan Bailey, Brooklynn Ater, Meryssa Neeley, Maizelee King; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11 – 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2024, in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Chaplain Lloyd Markley officiating.
Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery.

John Allen Owen - October 28, 1938 - May 15, 2024

Obituary Preview: John Allen Owen, 85 of Urbana passed away, on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, in Mercy Health Urbana.
He was born on October 28, 1938, in Champaign County to the late George and Esther (Dye) Owen.
John was a 1958 graduate of Graham High School, which was the very first class to ever graduate from Graham! After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. John married the love of his life Sandra Queen on August 8, 1964, in Careysville, Ohio. He then went on to work for Navistar, he started in 1966 then retired after 38 great years. John enjoyed camping and playing cards at the senior center with his wife. He loved The Ohio State University football team, for his 75th birthday he went to his very first football game with his grandson. John loved spending time with his grandsons, most of all he enjoyed spending time with all his family.
John is survived by his loving wife of 59 years and 9 months, Sandra Owen; daughter, Denise (Brent) Crumley; grandchildren, Lucas (Melissa) Crumley and Sean (Elizabeth) Crumley; great-granddaughters, Addison and Payton Crumley; brother, Howard Owen; and sister, Carol Erwin.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Floyd (Sarah) Owen; and sister, Virginia Anderson.

Obituary Preview: Larry Ray James, 86, of West Liberty, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024, in Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine.
Larry was born on June 21, 1937, in Wyandot County, Ohio to the late Earl M. and Doris I. (Spracklin) James. He graduated from LaRue High School. Larry served honorably in the U.S. Army. He worked as a Railroad Signal Maintainer at Erie and Conrail Railroads and retired after 42 years of service. Larry lived in Cable, Ohio for 45 years.
Larry was a faithful man of God who loved to serve his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He served as the Deacon of the Woodstock Freewill Baptist Church for several years.
Larry enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. He loved watching his sports, especially the Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Mary P. (Garrett) James; children, Tony (Lori) James, Tracey (Curt) Hostetler, Thomas (Rhonda) James, Ty (Becky) James; grandchildren, Bethany (Jonmichael) Johnson, Jennifer (Lawrence) Asare, David (Jessica) James, Ethan (Jaima) James, Samantha (Zach) Schinker, Rachael (Tim) McCall, Alan James, Lucas James, Cassidy James, Jackson (Annie) James, Lillian (Jarrod) Shoemaker; brothers, Ronald James, William (Susie) James; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Keith James, and sister-in-law, Shirley James.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 – 7 PM on Friday May 17, 2024, in Woodstock Free Will Baptist Church, Woodstock, Ohio.
Funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2024, in the church with Reverend Grant “Kenny” Cordell and Pastor Carl Hartman officiating.
Burial will follow in Jenkins Chapel Cemetery in Cable, Ohio.

He was born on August 16,1933 in Cincinnati Ohio, the son of Homer and Opal Ashcraft. He retired from The Salvation Army after 44 years of faithful service.
Ernest is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Wacenske of Springfield Angela (Herbert) Carter of Piqua and two sons, Larry (Janet) Ashcraft of Philadelphia and Steven (Debra) Ashcraft of Connecticut; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Adeline, his son in law Lenard Wacenske, two sisters Leona Baldwin & Bessie Hammons and one brother William Ashcraft.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the VERNON FUNERAL HOME in Urbana Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 10:00 AM in the funeral home with Colonel Guy Klemanski presiding.
A committal burial will follow in the Rose Hill Burial Park.

Val was born on December 14, 1961, in Urbana, Ohio to Jerry and Betty (Holland) Skaggs. Val graduated from Urbana High School. She worked as a quality inspector for Navistar for the past 7 years and was a member of the UAW Local 402.
Val loved going on trips to the sunny beaches in Florida. She enjoyed hosting cookouts, cooking for her family, and watching football. Above all, Val loved her family, especially her grandkids who she loved to have over to spend the day in the pool.
Val is survived by her daughters, Sara (Kamal) Alhmoud, Kandise (Jason) Reed; grandchildren, Jenna, Aleeah, Alexa, Elaina, Zack, Issac, Cesar; sisters, Linda Freeman, Vinnie Webber, Deanna (Frank) Pimiento; brothers, Mike (Robin) Skaggs, Dan (Judy) Skaggs, David (Carol) Skaggs; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Val is preceded in death by her loving husband, David Trostel; parents; sisters, Evalyna McKneely, Bev Cardosa, Marsha Smith, Luann Skaggs; brothers, Don Skaggs, and Bud Skaggs.

Ronnie L Coder - July 09, 1941 - May 04, 2024

Obituary Preview: Ronnie L. Coder, 82 of Urbana, Ohio passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, in his home.
Ronnie was born on July 9, 1941, in Magnetic Springs, Ohio to the late Lloyd and Mildred (Stults) Coder.
Ronnie graduated from Leesburg Magnetic High School in 1959 and set a school record of winning 15 varsity letters. He went to Bliss College on a basketball scholarship. After 1 year, he entered Ohio State University and was the starting pitcher until he hurt his shoulder and could not pitch again. He got his master’s degree from Xavier University in School Administration in 1971.
Ronnie worked in the field of education for 42 years and was employed by Buckeye Valley, West Liberty-Salem, Urbana, Graham, Champaign County ESC, and Urbana University. The first 18 years, he was a teacher and coach, then went into administration. In April 2016, he started texting faith quotes on different topics to his Sunday School class of about 20 every Thursday. That grew to over 50 people and the Urbana United Methodist Church started sending them out to over 200 in their weekly newsletter.
Ronnie and his wife Dianne enjoyed playing tennis, golf, and country dancing. For many years they were active in the Emmaus community in Marysville. Starting the summer of 1999, they began taking the entire family on a 1-week summer vacation, usually to the beach in South Carolina. It started with 9 people and has grown to around 20. One of Ronnie’s favorite things to do was to watch family members participate in their activities.
Ronnie was a member of many organizations including the Champaign County Republican Club and County Chairman for 12 years. He was a member of the Urbana Rotary Club for over 30 years and a Paul Harris Fellow and past president.
Ronnie is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Coder; daughter, Tiffany Jayne (Roger) Hamilton; son, Brian Lynn (Chris) Coder; stepdaughter, Tracey (Denbow) Nordahl; grandchildren, Brad (Veronica) Coder, Amber (Chris) Falloon, Sydney Hamilton, Sophia Hamilton; great grandchildren, Rylee Falloon, Addison Falloon, Isaac Falloon, Emery Falloon, Charlotte Coder, Lincoln Coder; half-brother, Charley Coder; as well as four nieces and nephews.
Ronnie is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Coder; as well as a step- brother, Gary Herd.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:00-1:30PM on Friday, May 10, 2024, in Urbana United Methodist Church, Urbana, Ohio.
Memorial services will immediately follow at 1:30PM in the church with Reverend Christopher Dinnel officiating.

Ross was born on October 16, 1991, in Glasgow, Scotland to Colin and Heather (McKinnon) True.
After immigrating with his family to Ohio, Ross graduated from Urbana High School in the Class of 2010. Shortly thereafter, Ross gained his U.S. citizenship on August 19, 2010, while proudly serving his country in the United States Army where he was a Unit Supply Specialist. After his service, Ross worked as a police dispatcher for Miami Valley Hospital and was a member of the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety, as well as the Association of Public Safety Communication.
In his free time, Ross enjoyed watching the Glasgow Rangers soccer team and professional wrestling. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his wife and four girls.
Ross is survived by his parents; his loving wife Shannon (Black) True; daughters, Lily, Ayona, Kamberlynn and Marianela True; sister, Arlene (Darrell) Rodin; as well as two nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, as well as a sister, Hayley True.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Roger graduated from high school in 1960. After graduation he went on to become a welder. Roger retired after many years and went on to enjoy many other things in life. He loved to collect model cars. You would also always find him doing crossword puzzles. Most of all, Roger enjoyed spending time with his family whenever he had the chance.
He is survived by his loving wife, Berletta Sue (Witten) Thornhill; daughter, Deborah Ann McFerland; sons, Roger Jr (Mary Ann) Thornhill and Jamie Lynn Thornhill; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Linda (Bob) Jumper and Judy Thornhill.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Charles Thomas Thornhill; sisters, Virgina (Thornhill) Wynn, Ruth (Thornhill) Adams, Louis (Thornhill) Tullis, and Carolyn Kay (Thornhill) Coy; brothers, Tom Thornhill, James Thornhill, Burle Thornhill, and Lawrence Allen Thornhill.

Obituary Preview: Erin E. Storms, 34, passed away unexpectedly on April 24, 2024, at her home in Pickerington, Ohio.
Erin was born on June 10, 1989, the daughter of John and the late Denise King Campbell. She graduated from Urbana High School in 2007 and moved to Columbus to attend college. She loved the city life and she and her husband John eventually made their home in Pickerington. Erin’s hobbies included knitting and crocheting, watching Minnesota Vikings football, travel, and tennis.
Erin never knew a stranger. She was quirky and goofy and always brought so much joy and positive energy to all she knew. Erin will be remembered for her carefree attitude and her ability to make everyone laugh. Erin had a beautiful soul that shined through in every action. She may have been a bit accident prone at times, but that never deterred her from living life the way she wanted. She always stood tall and told it like it was. Erin now walks hand in hand with the love of her life, her mother and all who went before her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by those who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, John Storms; her mother, Denise; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Martha Campbell; maternal grandparents, Harold and Roberta King; aunt, Sharon Campbell, Deanna King Evilsizor; uncles, Dave Campbell, Tom Campbell, Bill King, and Danny King.

Joseph William Rose - February 22, 1971 - April 23, 2024

Obituary Preview: Joseph William Rose, age 53, of DeGraff, Ohio passed away on Tuesday April 23, 2024, in his home.
Joseph was born on February 22, 1971, in Springfield, Ohio to George and Jeri (Dever) Rose. He graduated from West Liberty Salem in 1989 and worked as HTM at Honda for 28 years.
Joseph was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a dedicated 37th Airborne Engineer at Fort Bragg. During his time in the military, he served in Desert Storm.
A true fitness enthusiast, Joseph found joy in the challenge of CrossFit and the camaraderie of his running community. His 5K friends meant the world to him. Joseph also loved to travel. He would always enjoy his trips with Bill and Steph. It was when he lived in South Carolina for a few years where he met many that became lifelong friends. Joseph cherished his friendships. He often loved going dancing and having a good time.
He was a reading freak. His idea of good plans…was spending hours at Barnes and Noble. Most of all, he loved his family. Joseph would always spoil his nieces and nephews at Christmas with every noisy thing he could find and of course books.
Joseph is survived by his father, George Rose; sister, Sallie (Scott) Workman; nephews, Casey (Courtney) Gannon, Corey (Katlyn) Gannon, Tanner Workman; great-nieces and nephews, Collin, Coralyn and Curtis Gannon, Sophia and Rylie Gannon; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; special friends, Bill and Steph Frazee, and the Mills Family from South Carolina.
A special thanks to Hailey and Bob from Hospice.

Obituary Preview: Robert “Bob” M. Ward, Jr., of Urbana passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 21, 2024, in the Springfield Regional Medical Center.
Bob was born on September 23, 1937, in Urbana, Ohio to the late Robert M. Sr. and Sara Louise (Hutchinson) Ward. Bob graduated from Westville High School, class of 1955. He was a lifelong member and served on various committees for the Westville United Methodist Church.
He spent his life as a farmer. Bob loved the Champaign County Fair and served as the president for several years. He enjoyed working at the Ohio State Fair in the swine barn. He was the Champaign Co. Rotary Farmer of the year in 1974 and was inducted into the Champaign Co. Pork Council Hall of Fame in 2005.
Bob was deeply rooted in his community, devoting his time to several local organizations such as, the Farm Bureau Council, Caring Kitchen Board Member, Graham School Board, Champaign Co. Family YMCA original board member, McGrew Lodge K of P, Harmony Lodge #8 F. & A.M, Westville Grain Board, Ohio Hampshire Breeders Association, and the Champaign Co. Fair board for over 50 years.
Bob loved sports, especially baseball and basketball. For nearly half a century, Bob and his family looked forward to the family fishing trips at Dog Lake in Ontario Canada that became a fond tradition. Most of all he enjoyed his time with his children and grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 68 years, Gloria (Stickley) Ward; daughter, Gina (Charlie) Andrews; sons, Bart (Karen) Ward, Brian (Leisha) Ward, Barry Ward; grandchildren, Adam (Kristin Boggs) Ward, Matthew Andrews, Alex Ward, David (Hallie) Andrews, Robbie (Melissa) Andrews, Elliott Ward, Sarah (Lane) Smith, Lindsey (Mike) Clark, Ethan (Allison) Ward, Lauren Ward, Luke Ward, Alexa (Payne) Vaunderwoude; great-grandchildren, Sloan and Colin Ward, Max and Gus Ward, Landry, Channing and Paxson Ward, Ella, Emerson and Eli Andrews, Tate, Rhett and Lee Andrews, Winnie, Charlotte, Ruth, Viggo Smith, Bristol, Oakley and Myles Clark, Henry Ward; sister, Barbara (John) Prince; special cousin, Ward Lutz; brother-in-law, Ron Discher; sister-in-law, Stella Kay (Willard) Rogan; as well as three nieces.

A graveside service will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

Betty always enjoyed sitting back and watching her soap operas, especially, “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.” She was a big fan of the musical greats, Elvis Presley and Conway Twitty. Betty also loved Betty Boop. Most of all, Betty cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Melinda was born on February 19, 1965 in Bellefontaine, Ohio to John and Jeneane (Frazier) Overholt.
After graduating from the 1983 class of West Liberty-Salem High School, Melinda would go on to graduate from The Ohio State University School of Cosmetology and work at the Urbana Wal-Mart for many years. On April 24, 1999, Melinda would marry the love of her life Doug Mason at the West Liberty United Church of Christ.
In her free time, Melinda enjoyed cooking, crafting, and fishing. She particularly enjoyed going to car shows with Doug, Scott Cooksey, and her grandson. Melinda loved any opportunity to make a road trip out west with her husband. Melinda was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and Dallas Cowboys. Most of all, she thoroughly loved watching her grandson grow up and was his biggest supporter for all his sports endeavors.
Melinda is survived by her loving husband of 24 years; her mother; daughters, Tiffany Elliott and Sheila Fay; grandchild, Corbin Clapsaddle; brother, Jack (Jennifer) Overholt; brother-in-law, Richard (Debbie) Mason; sisters-in-law, Loretta George, Judy Mason and Deb Mason; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
She is preceded in death by her father; grandparents, John and Charlotte Frazier, and Clarence and Mabel Overholt; brothers-in-law, Jerry George and Jim Mason; as well as many other beloved family members.

Michael was born on August 28, 1944, in Ottumwa, Iowa to the late Malcom Richard and Betty Lou (Phillips) Melvin.
Michael graduated from Urbana High School in 1962. His academic journey continued to Springfield School of Business, graduating in 1965, American Savings and Loan Institute in 1974, and the Ohio Savings and Loan Academy in 1975. He was the President/CEO and Director at Perpetual Federal Savings Bank from 1969 to 2021 and had served as treasurer and executive vice president. Michael was a pillar of the community, serving in many roles in a variety of organizations, including: City Treasurer, the Urbana Rotary Club, secretary/treasurer of Rotary Manor, Inc., director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, trustee of the Champaign County Library, Harmony Lodge 9, F&AM, Chapter, Urbana Country Club, long time member of the sewing club, and several other committees and boards throughout his lifetime.
Michael was a devout man of God and a lifelong member of the Messiah Lutheran Church. He lived a life of service to his Lord and to his community. Michael touched many hearts and will be deeply missed by his friends, his family, and his community.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Mary Louise (Carpenter) Melvin; daughter, Mary Michelle (Doug) Schmid; son, Matthew Richard Melvin; stepsons, W. Allan (Jennifer) Midgley, Todd Midgley; sister, Lou A. (Mike) Cox; grandchildren, Timothy M. Melvin, Mercedes M. Melvin, Malayna J. Melvin; Tanner L. Nichols, M. Obituary Preview: David Laurence "Whitey" Kauffman, 85, went to his heavenly home on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, in Vancrest of Urbana. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle with Dementia and ultimately gave him peace.
David was born December 21, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Laurence and Mildred (Thayer) Kauffman.
David was a cherished husband, father, friend, and community member. He loved collecting model cars and tractors. His love for sports was evident as he reminisced about playing on a softball team in the 1960s, and he continued to embrace an active lifestyle through jogging, walking, and bicycling. David’s sweet tooth was well-known; he could never resist chocolate or any sweet treat. His care for others extended beyond his family; he took pride in mowing lawns and providing lawn care for others.
He married Jayne (Connolly) on July 18, 1959, and together they shared 57 years of marriage until her passing on January 26, 2017. He was a graduate of Salem Local High School class of 1956. David’s professional life was marked by 42 years of dedicated service at Siemens, from which he retired in 2001.
Above all, David was a man of deep Christian faith. He was kind and soft spoken. His dedication to God was unwavering, and he served in numerous capacities at the Free Methodist Church and the Urbana Church of Christ and Christian Union: as a Lay Pastor, Sunday School Superintendent, Song Leader, Youth Director, Treasurer, and an outstanding Sunday school teacher for many years. David’s legacy is one of love, service, and faith. He touched the lives of many. He will be dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his creator.
David is survived by his daughters, Kendra (Rick) Hunt, Larenda (Richard) Cordial, Lori (Norman) Kennedy; grandchildren, Jennifer Hunt, Mara Cordial, Kaleigh (Matt) Keeton, Bradley (Nicole) Kennedy, Ashley Kennedy; great-grandchildren, Landon Palaisa, Layla Kennedy, Carson Kennedy, Braxton Brennan.
David is preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles (Marjorie) Kauffman, Vernon (Ruth) Kauffman, Donald (Alta) Kauffman; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (John) Smith.

Louis Milton Driever - August 18, 1932 - March 28, 2024

Obituary Preview: Louis Milton Driever, 91, of Urbana, Ohio passed away on Thursday, the 28th of March in Lima Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 18th, 1932 in Middletown, Ohio to the late Walter and Estelle (Shoemaker) Driever. He was a 1950 graduate of Middletown High School, received his Bachelor's degree from Otterbein College and his Master's degree from Miami University.
While at Otterbein, he met a fellow music major, Betty Pooler. They married and enjoyed 68 years together. She survives him as well as their children Lou Jr, and Dwight Driever with grandchildren Tasha, Megan, Morgan and Jaden plus great-grandchildren Hanna, Emma, Maddison and Mason.
Lou was an accomplished musician. He was first chair first trumpet in the 33rd Army Band in Heidelberg playing concerts throughout Europe and on the Armed Forces Radio Network. He served as band director in Gettysburg and Hicksville before settling in as the band director at Northeastern High School in Springfield for almost 30 years. Unlike most teachers, his students enjoyed his tutelage for six years and he had a remarkable influence on them with many continuing on to become professional musicians themselves. He played trumpet and cornet in the Springfield Symphony, Ohio Valley British Brass Band and the Springfield Summer Arts Festival band for several decades and was active in a half dozen dance bands.
He was a Mason of the Franklin Lodge #14 in Troy for over 60 years, served on the negotiating teams for the NEHS Teacher's and Springfield Musician's Union and was a member of the VFW, Ohio Farm Bureau and Kings Fraternity.
Lou served as the choir director for the Covington Presbyterian Church and was active in Covenant Presbyterian Church of Springfield for over 60 years. He and Betty recently joined the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana to make it easier for them to attend services. Lou enjoyed the past 24 years of retirement on the family farm outside Cable, always welcoming former students, friends, and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held at VERNON FUNERAL HOME in Urbana (235 Miami St) on April 6th at 3 pm with the Reverend Bruce Miller presiding. Visitation hours will be 1-3 pm preceding the service. Lou will be cremated and buried later on the family farm in accordance with his wishes.
