John Leonard Skinion - October 13, 1949 - June 08, 2023

Departed: 06/08/2023 (zeigler)
Obituary Preview: A tribute written by his daughter:
John Leonard Skinion, 73, of Zeigler, passed away at 12:06 a.m., June 8, 2023, at his home.
John was born on October 13, 1949, in Benton to John Milton and Rowena (Toliver) Skinion.
During his 8th grade year, with high school on the horizon, a teacher realized John was illiterate. He was extremely embarrassed and grateful the teacher took time to work with him and help him get to the perils of high school. Through the experience John discovered one of his greatest loves, that of reading.
John graduated from Benton High School in 1968 and continued his education at Southern Illinois University- Carbondale, where he met his soulmate, Catherine Darlene Whiteside. After he spent a summer studying in Europe, where he met his third *brother* the late Robert Livingston, he returned to Cathy and graduated.
John and Cathy married on March 31, 1973. The next 50 years would take John on a journey to become a modern renaissance man. A small sampling of his many hats would be: joining Civil Air Patrol #11212 in high school and reaching the office of Squadron Commander for Southern Illinois; a coal miner at Old Ben #24; a performer with Pyramid Players 1987 “Grease” and “Carousel” (he knew he was completely tone deaf); Main Street East’s Vickie Rose; he was a member of the Masons in Newman and Benton; also Eastern Star as a member and as Grand Patron alongside Cathy as the Grand Matron in Benton; and a member of the Empty House, a scion society of the Baker Street Irregulars.
He later returned to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in the late 90’s to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in engineering. His focus was on ways to take coal mines and restructure them to be green energy, and how to help those miners learn what they need so jobs aren’t lost.
John wanted everyone to remember a few things: he was the originator of the truly “bad-dad jokes” and the three books every home library must have are Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe, and “The Littlest Angel.” He walked on fire several times in 1985 and 1987. He loved his family, his *adopted* family, and his friends. However, John said the greatest achievement he ever unlocked was turning Cathy from a Republican to a Democrat.
Surviving John are his wife, Cathy of Zeigler; his daughter and son-in-law, Signe K., and Allen Mezo of New Orleans, LA; granddaughter Rowan Michelle; his sister-in-law, Signe G. Whiteside of Scottsdale, AZ; his nieces, Constance Whiteside (Al Plessinger) of Scottsdale, AZ; Penny (Ben) Peress of McLean, VA; *brothers* Paul Kovac and Vernon Sweetin both of Benton; his second daughter, Sara Howell, her husband Roger, and their children, Alex, Logan, Evan, and Serenity, all of whom he adopted as his own.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rowena “Toots” Skinion; his mother and father-in-law Cleophia and Fred Whiteside; his brother-in-law Allen Whiteside; his second set of parents and godparents to his daughter, Charles and Kathryn Williams; and his brother Robert Livingston.
There will be no immediate service. As their enduring love for each other, once Catherine passes away, the family will have a celebration of their lives, at which time his ashes will be placed next to Catherine in her casket for eternity.

It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, share details about their life, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial contributions, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Aim for a length that provides enough information without overwhelming readers.

Can I include photos in an obituary?
