Departed: 03/26/2024 (Fair Lawn)
Obituary Preview: Caroline Marie Pompeo, age 81, of Fair Lawn passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, in her home which she shared with her beloved husband, Patrick.
Carol was born on Beacon Ave in Jersey City on October 30,1942 to Theresa and Nicolas Conza. She is granddaughter to Josie and Joe Ranone, the sister to Anthony and Joseph, mother to Annemary, grandmother to Sydney, Jenna, and Emily and beloved wife of 66 years to Patrick.
Carol met the love of her life, Patrick in 1957. She graduated from Ramapo High School in 1961 and continued to go on to work as a secretary in New York City.
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Carol was a seamstress when Annemary was young, then went onto working for International Blimpie’s Accounting department, then Sterns, where she retired.
Carol was a profound writer and passionate about literature. She loved reading Edgar Allen Poe, about Italian culture and ancestry, Christianity and mystery books. Shortly after she retired, pursued a college degree in Literature at Montclair State University.
Carol was a meticulous crafter who crocheted countless baby blankets, sewed dresses from scratch for her granddaughters, and scrapbooking. She was always moving, she always had a plan, and she always had projects she was working on.
Carol had a passionate love of dogs throughout her entire life, starting with her neighbor’s dog, Jinx. Her passion for dogs radiated into the hobby her and Pat pursued together, dog showing. Pat and Carol got their first Rhodesian Ridgeback, Ebu, and he became an overnight sensation. Her love of dog handling poured into her granddaughter, Sydney. Carol trained Sydney, and her puppy Rhodesian Ridgeback, Kala, and he as well, became a champion. Carol and Pat trained police dogs, and bread Ridgebacks.
Carol was most well-known among family and friends as the most spectacular chef, baker and host. Holidays consisted of sitting around a big table, passing around the most delicious Italian food, like Ricotta Pie, sausage bread, chicken cutlets and meatballs.
Carol was the reason each holiday felt so festive. She expertly decorated for each holiday and season, and celebrated even small holidays with the most effort, just as another excuse to spend time together, make memories, and laugh. She had a love for anything miniature, little knick-knacks, and had the most fashion sense out of everyone in the family. Her favorite color was blue teal, she loved sitting on the deck in the sunshine, and she loved red roses.
Carol loved baking, especially with her granddaughters. Every Christmas season, Carol and her granddaughter, Emily would plan, bake, and construct elaborate gingerbread houses over the years, resulting in a town of gingerbread houses we take out every year. Grandma cookies were her specialty, and her Chocolate Pecan Pie recipe will be passed down for generations.
Carol loved making each and every birthday a big celebration, but her favorite was the combined birthdays she’d share with her granddaughter, Jenna.
Carol had an infectious personality that everyone wanted to be around. She loved hosting backgammon nights with her girlfriends, and they’d spend the whole night laughing. She always had a deep appreciation for family traditions and instilled those into her daughter and granddaughters.
Another passion that Carol and Pat both shared was giving back in any way they could. They were advocates and strong supporters of meaningful organizations like St. Jude’s Children Hospital, Wounded Warriors, Tunnel to Towers, New Hope, Several Sources Shelters, and St. Anne’s food pantry. This inspired a newer hobby, extreme couponing, which she learned how to do so that they could give back even more. This resulted in overflows at St. Anne’s and other food pantries in the area.
Carol was a devout Catholic her entire life and made it her mission to be able to send her grandchildren to Catholic school, even if that meant waiting in line for hours at 5AM to enroll them. She supported them with every homework assignment and project, every graduation and ring ceremony, every science fair and country-report day, every Christmas pageant, and was truly her granddaughter’s biggest cheerleader. She sat at the dinner table with her grandkids for hours making sure they completed their homework and fully understood the concepts and proofread every essay. She taught her daughter and granddaughters to be problem solvers, the meaning of hard and honest work, to always be eager to learn more, to be independent and strong, to know when to forgive, to laugh until your stomach hurts, to always follow your heart and your instincts, and to love, and support each other like there is no tomorrow.
The love that Carol showed for everyone was unwavering. She was always the first to volunteer to help, to cook, to accompany, and to console. She loved to spend days gardening in the country with Pat, playing trivia with her grandkids, and spending hours laughing about memories with Annemary.
Carol was an amazing wife. The love that she poured into her marriage overflows into everyone around them. Carol and Pat have been inseparable since 1957. They went to prom together, honeymooned in Florida, shared a love for the Midwest and log homes, and were a complete comedy act any time they were together. Their love inspired so many people. They welcomed so many into their home with open arms and a full plate.
Carol loved to dance and be active, participated in bodybuilding with her daughter, Annemary, and write four books- one for each grandchild, and the last featured Carol’s grandmother, Josie, and all the women of the family. Carol was and will forever be the matriarch of our family, no one will ever be able to fill the void on our hearts without her physically here, but we know she is dancing and jumping for joy with Jesus and her parents and grandparents.
Friends and family of Carol are welcomed to join with her family at St. Anne’s Church, in Fair Lawn, on Tuesday, April 2, at 10:30AM.
