Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, allowing them to attend funeral services, send condolences, and share memories.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer gathers information from the family and creates a concise and meaningful tribute to the person who has passed away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. It may also include details about funeral services, memorial donations, or other ways to honor the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often limited to 200-300 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required) for publication.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some publications offer free or low-cost obituaries, while others may charge by the word or line. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your family may still need to make adjustments or additions when the time comes.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com or Newspapers.com. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives or microfilm copies of old newspapers that you can access.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries may be editable depending on the platform's policies. Contact the publication or platform directly to inquire about their editing procedures.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, date of death, and funeral service information. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or feasible.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a biographical sketch written about someone while they are still alive. It's sometimes used as a way to celebrate milestones or achievements during a person's lifetime.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including anecdotes or humorous stories about the deceased can help capture their personality and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I handle errors in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately. They may be able to correct the mistake online or issue a correction in a subsequent edition.

Can I republish an obituary on social media?

Yes, many families choose to share obituaries on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter to reach a wider audience. Be sure to check with the original publication or platform for any copyright restrictions before sharing.

What is an online memorial?

An online memorial is a digital space where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences for the deceased. Many online obituary platforms offer this feature as part of their services.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others might be archived after a certain period (e.g., 1-2 years).

Can I create an online memorial for someone who passed away years ago?

Yes! You can create an online memorial for someone who passed away at any time. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and connect with others who knew them.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for a veteran?

Yes. When writing an obituary for a veteran, be sure to include their military service details (branch, rank, years served) and any notable awards or decorations they received. You may also want to mention any military honors that will be rendered during funeral services.

How do I find resources for writing an obituary?

You can find guidance on writing an obituary through online resources like funeral home websites, bereavement support groups, or professional organizations like the International Association of Obituarists.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause instead of sending flowers. Include the charity's name and address (or online donation link) in the obituary so that readers know how to contribute.

What is the purpose of an obituary headline?

An obituary headline serves as a title for the obituary and typically includes the person's name and age. It helps readers quickly identify the obituary and decide whether they want to read more.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit to make the tribute even more special.
