Obituary Preview: Gladys Ellen Matthews Johns went to be with the Lord on May 15, 2024. She was born on August 8, 1947, in Magnolia, Mississippi, the daughter of Tannie and Gladys Matthews.

She was united in marriage to Willie Johns on February 12, 1966, in McComb, MS. She enjoyed cooking, camping, and spending time with family, especially with her grandkids. Ellen was a strong volunteer in the ministry of her church in areas like G.A.’s, AWANA, cooking for the sick and working with families with Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief. She worked as a clerk in the Simpson County Circuit Clerk's Office for many years. She had a love for her family, friends, and her Savior Jesus Christ.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Tannie and Gladys Matthews; brothers, Benard Matthews and Willis Matthews; sisters, Doris Adams, Evelyn Hodges, and Lynn Wells.

Ellen is survived by her husband, Willie Johns; two children, Brad Johns (Jana), of Mendenhall, MS, and Chris Johns (Traci), of Hollandale, MS; brothers, Richard B. Matthews (Georgie) of Fayetteville, NC and Ronnie Matthews (Judy) of Lexington, SC; granddaughters, Haley (Doug) Sherrill, Caleb Johns, Hannah Johns, Cadee Johns, Hayden Johns, Josh Johns, Justin Johns, and Lizzy Johns and great-granddaughter, Ellie Sherrill.

Thank you to all the Accent Care Home Health and Hospice workers who took such good care of Ellen while she was sick, and a special “Thank You” to Lamisha Hubbard who helped Willie care for her daily.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, in Mendenhall, MS from 5:00-8:00 p.m. followed by the funeral on Saturday, May 18, 2024, also at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, in Mendenhall, MS at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Poplar Springs Cemetery. Bro. Chuck Morgan, Bro. Chris Johns and Bro. Ken West will officiate the service.

She enjoyed the simple things, like drinking her morning coffee and watching the sunrise. She loved watching the birds and squirrels eat out of the feeders her husband, John, put up for them. Also, just spending time with her family and friends. She was a lifelong member of the Pinola community where she grew up and went to school. She was a member of Pinola Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Nannie Lucas; brothers, John Lucas, Charles Lucas, Pete Lucas and Aubrey Lucas; nephew, Eddie Lucas and brother-in-law, Wayne Holland.

She is survived by her husband, John W. Fortenberry and her daughter, Angie Fortenberry. She also leaves behind her sister, Betty Holland; her nieces, Regennia Pearce, Melissa Bryant, Lou Ann Gill and nephews, Travis Lucas and Troy Lucas.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS from 10:00 am until 12 noon. The service will be at noon in the chapel at Tutor Funeral Home with Bro. Johnie May and Bro. Dan Ainsworth officiating. Interment will follow at Pinola Baptist Church Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Amanda Jo Saulters passed away on April 29, 2024, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS. She was born on April 25, 1985, to Jerry Wayne Saulters and Kim Abel Saulters in Flowood, MS.

Amanda grew up in the close-knit Star community. She attended McLaurin School with the same close friends from kindergarten on. She was very active in sports, including cheerleading and softball.

Amanda was the first grandchild for Papaw and Mimi Abel yet one of many for Papaw and Mamaw Sumrall. She was adored by her family and her passing leaves a huge void in their lives.

She was preceded in death by her very special uncle, Danny Pope.

She is survived by her parents, Jerry and Kim Saulters; paternal grandparents, James and Wanda Sumrall; maternal grandparents, Philip and Pamela Abel; two brothers, Justin Saulters and his wife, Olivia, Will Saulters and his wife Hannah, and nephew and niece, Miles and Charlotte.

Lynda Magee Cockrell - April 26, 1950 - April 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: Lynda Magee Cockrell was born in Jackson MS on April 26, 1950. Growing up in Mendenhall, Lynda attended Mendenhall High School where she was selected Most Beautiful. She attended Copiah Lincoln Junior College where she was a Colette. Lynda married and moved to Ruston LA, where she attended Louisiana Tech.

Lynda and Randy Cockrell, her husband, settled in Prentiss MS to rear their children. Randy owned RCR Trucking and Lynda frequently helped Randy with their business ventures. Lynda and Randy retired and moved to the Reservoir area where she and Randy made their home. Their focus was traveling and being close to family. Randy passed away in November of 2005.

Her empathetic heart lured Lynda to a life of service and helping others at The McCoy House.

Lynda especially loved going to the beach and relaxing by the ocean. She adored hunting and found it such a challenge. Being outdoors gave her the satisfaction and quiet time to pray and marvel at God’s creation.

She had two children, Laren Christopher Rockett, and Hollie Cockrell McClendon. Lynda’s grandchildren were the apple of her eye: Lakeland, Banks and Samantha along with great grandchildren.

Bill Paul, her adoring husband, has been invaluable to her care and commitment to her health, as were Bill’s four children, Susan, Che’, Madelaine, and Tim.

Thank you to all who have loved Lynda as we celebrate her life on her 74th birthday. Lynda loved her Lord and Savior with all her being. She adored traveling with her three loving sisters: Mollie Magee Van Devender (Billy), Jamie Magee Roberts (Robby) and Angela Magee Stephens (Joe).

Lynda is proceeded in death by her beloved husband, Randy Cockrell and her parents Archie L. and Ina Frances Magee.

Funeral arrangements are set for Friday, April 26 at 11:00 am at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS with visitation from 10:00 am. Private graveside prayer with burial will follow at Rials Creek Cemetery in Simpson County.

Stephanie was the firstborn child of Robert Carroll “Butch” Burnham, Jr. and Nancy Elizabeth Turner Burnham. She was born on September 21st, 1969, and was raised by her parents along with her three sisters in Puckett, Mississippi.

Stephanie was preceded in death by both of her parents and grandparents, George and Sue Turner of Magee and Carroll and Gene Burnham of Braxton.

Stephanie was a loving mother and grandmother of three children and six grandchildren. She is survived by her sons and their families: Justin Woods, his wife Maggie, and their children Kinsley and Walker; Kyle Woods, his wife Ashley, and their children Caden, Kylie, Mylie Grace, and Dawson; and Dylan Stanley and his fiance, Anna Katherine Wilson. Stephanie is also survived by her three sisters and their families: Gina Williams, her husband John Mark and their daughter, London; Kristen Townsend, her husband, Jake and their children, Eli and Cooper; and Robin Burnham and her son, Peyton.

Stephanie left this world with her special friend and loving companion by her side, Mr. Steve Williams.

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life on Saturday, April 13th at Puckett Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 AM. A private family burial service will take place in the Puckett cemetery.

We will miss her dearly, but we know that she is rejoicing in heaven with her parents and so many loved ones who have gone before her. Even though our hearts are heavy, we know she is no longer suffering and in pain. We also take great comfort in knowing that we will see her again soon.

Thelma Bernice Rice - February 28, 1929 - March 30, 2024

Obituary Preview: Thelma Bernice Rice also remembered and known as Bernice to her friends, Mom to her children and Mamaw to her grandchildren and all their friends was born on February 28, 1929. She was born in Prentiss, MS, but lived her early years in Wesson, which she called home. She was 95 years of age when the Lord called her to her heavenly home on March 30, 2024, and was surrounded by family.

She was married to the late A. V. Rice for over 60 years. They raised five (5) children, and she was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Later in life, she went to work part-time at the United States Post Office for Harrisville and Crystal Springs and eventually became a full-time Postmaster in Harrisville, for approximately 15 years. She loved the Post Office and was always proud she was serving in her community. She was also a member of the American Businesswomen’s Association and the Postmaster’ League. Mom was a faithful and working member of the Harrisville Community Church for over 60 years. She was committed to her service to the Lord by her attendance as, a Sunday School teacher, Song Leader, and choir member and she served in many areas of office. The church was an extension of her family and in whatever capacity she served, whether as secretary or treasurer, her dedication was unwavering because to her there was never an excuse not to be there and to serve. Mom enjoyed all sports and if there was a ballgame and someone was going, she was ready, whether it was baseball, basketball, football, soccer (weather permitting), and even scrimmages. She supported her children and grandchildren in every aspect of their lives. Traveling was one of her number one sports, especially to the Smokey Mountains and this sometimes was at least two to three times a year. She will be remembered for serenading all of us with the song “Chatanooga Choo Choo” & she sang this every time we saw the water as we were entering Chatanooga. Mom just loved travel and was already ready and her favorite words were “Let’s Go!”

Mom loved her family very much and loved spending time with them, which brought her great joy. Her home was always open, especially on Sunday if you wanted lunch. We are talking a full buffet with at least two desserts, and this meal was always prepared before she went to church and we are still amazed at how she did this! This was always a priority in her life.

She is preceded in death by her spouse A. V. Rice, parents, Ernest and Ollie Jane Wilson McCray, sisters, Mattie Mae Moore, Inez Jackson, Ollene Whitehead and brothers, Francis Lee McCray and Thomas Earl McCray.

She is survived by her children, Angie Langston (Bubba), Joe Rice (Jennifer), Denise Ware (David), Barbara Spencer and David Rice; Grandchildren, Lindsey Myers (Robert), Micah Windham, Ashlyn Abernathy (Dustin), Macey and Meagan Spencer, Aaron Rice (Lindsey), Jared Rice (Hannah), Brooks and Breanna Langston, Sam and Anna Wilson; Sister, Jean Maddox, and many beloved nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She has six great-grandchildren, Luke and Ruston Myers, Kooper Miller, Maddox and Remi Rose Rice and Charlotte Rice.

Obituary Preview: Jack Copeland, 94, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2024. He was born February 10, 1930, to John B. and Wilma Burnett Copeland in Jackson, MS.

Jack joined the United States Navy in April of 1947, where he led an eventful military life. He was a Master Chief Radarman, the senior enlisted man at Radarman Class B School - Treasure Island, San Francisco, California. He was a qualified officer of the Desk of Destroyer, Supervisor Air Controller, and Electronics materials officer of an A.P.A. Transport Ship. He retired from the United States Navy as an E-9 in 1969.

In 1968, he began another career as an Arco Journeyman Electrician in charge of the Electronic Radio Shop where he repaired radios, pagers, alarms and band circuit board repairs. He retired in 1986 as head electrician of the plant..

He enjoyed freshwater fishing, boating, woodworking-building cabinets and furniture, and traveling with his wife to family reunions. He received his 60-year pin as a Master Mason and Scottish Rite.

He married his wife, Edna Robinson, on August 4, 1951, who preceded him in death on July 13, 2020. He is also preceded in death by his parents; son, Stephen Copeland; brothers, John Copeland (Mary), and Billy Copeland; and brothers-in-law, Alex Lovertich, Ray Walsh, and Bobby Grantham.

Jack is survived by his daughters, Christina Busby (Jason) and Debbie Hocker (Roy); brothers, Fred Copeland (Evelyn), and Larry Copeland (Aldina); sisters, Lucille Lovertich, Wilma Walsh, and Patsy Grantham; two grandchildren, Taylor Busby and Rylee Hocker; sister-in-law, Sudie Copeland along with a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS at 11:00 am. Bro. Joe Hanna will officiate the service.

Obituary Preview: Dorothy Lee Ashley Whitfield gained her heavenly wings on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at MS Care Center in Raleigh, MS. She was born on January 5, 1931, in Smith County to Ross Butler and Jewel Ashley Dickerson Butler.

She was married to the love of her life, Curtis L. Whitfield, for over sixty-four years. After his retirement, they bought a camper, and they traveled to many states all over the country. One of their favorite places to visit was the Great Smoky Mountains during the changing of the leaves where they almost bought a house. She enjoyed cooking for her family and their get-togethers. She also enjoyed sewing and working in their yard with all the beautiful flowers, but her favorite flower was gladiolus. Being with her grandchildren and many great-grandchildren brought her tremendous joy. Sitting on the front porch with pawpaw drinking their morning coffee will always be one of the grandchildren's greatest memories of the two together. Every chance Curtis could, he brought his sweetheart flowers, and on Friday, he took her gladiolus.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mendenhall, MS.

Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband, Curtis Whitfield; son, Curtis Todd Whitfield; daughter, Debbie Laird (Robert); grandchildren, Adam Laird, April Laird, Dillon Whitfield, Christopher Whitfield, Ashley Whitfield, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Jewel Butler; sisters, Mary Lemon and Birtie Mae Kennedy; and brothers, J.D. Butler, Billy Butler, and Charles Butler.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Jim Futrell officiating. Interment will follow at D'Lo Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Cruz Mackenzie Lewis was born July 14th, 2016, in Brookhaven, MS, to his loving parents, Kirk and Callie Lewis. Cruz passed away on Monday, February 26, 2024, in Shivers, MS.

Cruz (Cookie) was a 7-year-old, energetic, fearless child. Many would describe him as an “old soul” who never met a stranger or ran out of things to say. Cruz loved all sports and gave 100%, whether he was on the football field, soccer field, or baseball field. He was a natural athlete and showed incredible potential at a very young age. He looked forward to baseball season every summer and was so excited to be selected as an LC All-Star. He also enjoyed football and “juking” players (as he would call it) while he ran for touchdowns, ending with a victory dance. Along with excelling athletically, Cruz excelled academically as a 2nd grader at the New Hebron Attendance Center. He was chosen to participate in the Gifted Program as a superintendent scholar, a principal’s scholar, student of the month, and a class favorite. Cruz was known as a dancing machine at school for his wicked moves. He loved watching live wrestling and using the moves he learned on his big brother whenever they got home. Cruz adored his dogs, Sam and Benny Joe. He enjoyed playing video games with his “flock”; he is now the biggest bird.

Cruz is survived by his parents, Kirk and Callie Lewis; older brother, Mercer; paternal grandmother, Gloria Westmoreland of Shivers; maternal grandparents, George (Junior) Walker of New Hebron and Pam & David Smith of Silver Creek; aunts, Oliva (Elliot) Cole, Ashlyn Cole (JP ), Jana (Tommy) McGough of Franklin, TX, Cori (Cody) Calcote of Tilton, Georgie Walker of New Hebron; uncles, Justin (Rena)Westmoreland of Crestview, FL, and Jordan (Kevin) Westmoreland of Virginia along with a host of cousins.

Cruz is preceded in death by his Paw, Wade Westmoreland. Pallbearers are Tyne Calcote, Cody Calcote, Elliot Cole, JP Parish, Dean Banks, and Tanner Peavy

A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Mendenhall City Cemetery. There will be a visitation for the family to receive friends from 12:00 until 1:30 PM at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS. Bro. Larry Pate will officiate the service.

Edna Earle was a graduate of Silver Creek High School and Co-Lin Junior College. In 1950, she married Charles F. Guynes, and they made their home in Raymond, Hazlehurst, and lastly in Mendenhall.

Edna Earle was employed as office manager for thirty-one years by the MS State Department of Health at the Simpson County office.

She was the mother of two daughters, Gale Guynes and Patti Neely (Randall), a grandson, Ryan Neely (Angie), and a great-grandmother to Conner Neely and Cooper Neely.

Edna Earle was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Guynes; her parents, Henry and Edna Thompson; and her two sisters, Sue Mahaffey (Paul) and Ramelle Moody (Robert).

Barney was born on January 25, 1942, the oldest son of Leslie "Duck" Bairfield and Hilda Rae Welch Bairfield. He was a lifelong resident of Simpson County and a member of Jupiter Baptist Church.

Barney attended Pinola High School where he was a member of the football and basketball teams. Upon graduation in 1960, he began a career in construction. Through his hard work and determination, he became a well-respected and successful business owner of Hemphill Construction.

One of Barney's hobbies was car racing. For years he traveled across the South competing as a driver in the drag racing circuit. Being a businessman with a great passion for racing, he had a vision to bring fun, family entertainment to Simpson County. In 1990, his vision became a reality when he opened the gates of Simpson County Motorsports Park. Some years later, he acquired and reopened Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, MS.

Upon retirement, Barney enjoyed many years traveling across the country with his loving wife, Barbara. The two of them made many friends and wonderful memories in their travels together. When at home, he could be found sitting on his back porch alongside Barbara.

Barney is survived by his loving, devoted wife Barbara Ann Mott Bairfield, daughters Donna Massey, Melissa (Jack) Torrence, Michelle (Tom) Brooks, sons, MIchael (Holly) Bairfield, Barney "Lee" Bairfield, Jr. He was beloved Pappy to Kristin (Donald) Berry, Karli (Davis) McGinnis, Justin (Stephanie) Waltman, Jamie (William) Lake, Brittney Bairfield, Brennan Bairfield, Barney "Leebo" (Lauren) Bairfield, III, Conner (Candace) Bairfield, Kaylee (Jose) Silvan, Ty (Tiffany) Brooks, Valorie (Casey) Barlow and 21 great grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers, Leslie Bairfield, Bobby Bairfield and Earnest Bairfield.

Barney is preceded in death by his father, Leslie "Duck" Bairfield, mother, Hilda Rae Welch Bairfield, and brother Charles Bairfield.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 6, at the funeral home officiated by Bro. Danny Powell and Bro. Roger Lee. Interment will follow at Jupiter Cemetery.

She loved time with her family and enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities, she was their biggest fan in the crowds. She was always up for a shopping day, road trips with Ricky just for a bite to eat, planning beach trips, Christmas, and all things Christmas.

Survivors include her spouse, John R. Bailey; brother, David F. Sasser, Jr and wife, Linda; children Matthew Womack, wife Courtney and children Ethan, Nathan, and Collan; Kristen Steele, husband Timothy, and their children Owen and Harrison; Brian Bailey, spouse Bethany and their children Westin, Lincoln, and Selah; Laine Staten and her children Beta, Millie and Charlie.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Linda Sellers.

The family will have a private visitation at 9 am, then invite all friends and family to attend the funeral mass at 10 am on Saturday, January 27, at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Jackson, MS, with Father Nick Adam as celebrant and burial at the Mendenhall City Cemetery at 12:30. Obituary Preview: Mr. Charlie Robinson of Pinola, MS, left his earthly home on Jan 3rd, 2024, after a year of slow decline caused by complications arising from having lived a long and full life. Charlie was born in Taylorsville, MS, on March 6th,1931.

As the first child to Rosco and Rebie Hankins Robinson, Charlie’s sister and only sibling, Joyce, was born two years later. Charlie attended Taylorsville High School, where he was a respected member of the football team. At 17 years of age, he began his career with Southern Pine Electric Power Association and kept a position within the company until his retirement on his 86th birthday. Also, at 17 years of age, he married the love of his life, Marion LaVera (Dupree) Robinson, with whom he shared the next 74 years of his life until his passing. Charlie was a member and a Deacon of Pinola Baptist Church for decades. He had a deep passion for Tennessee Walking horses, which he owned, trained, and showed. He was known for his love of hunting and was considered to be among the best of the local deer and turkey hunters. He will long be remembered by his fellow employees at Southern Pine Electric Power Association, who he considered to be among his closest friends. Charlie was a master Mason and a Shiner for over 68 years. Charlie will be remembered by many as one who was quick to help anyone in need and by his frequently quoted phrase, “Sooner or later, the truth comes out.”

Charlie will be deeply missed by his wife, Marion LaVera “Miss Vera” Robinson, and his three sons, Kenneth, Mitchell & James (Buddy). He also leaves behind six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Rosco Robinson, his mother, Mrs. Rebie Robinson, and his sister, Joyce Robinson Howell.

His body will lie in state on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM. The funeral service will be held there at 2:00 PM. with graveside following in Pinola Baptist Church Cemetery.

Eric Tindell was a loving son who enjoyed spending time with his parents and making sure that they were taken care of. He enjoyed taking his father, Willie Spud Tindell, hunting and working in the shop on other hobbies they enjoyed together. Eric also enjoyed visiting and having long conversations with his mother, Lita Knight. Eric has a great love for hunting and enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with others. Eric Tindell was a loving son, father, husband, grandson, and friend. Eric’s love of the outdoors and his family was evident to all who knew him.
