She was preceded in death her husband, Sam Jones; three brothers, James, Clayborne and Kenny Burrow and four sisters, Dora Mae Harrison, Louise Melton, Sally Burrow and Almeda Boone.
At an early age she joined the New Hope Baptist Church in Sussex, VA. She was a caregiver for Roberta G. Tucker and family for many years.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Ruth "Jean" Steals; one grandson, Sean Steals; two great-grandchildren, Yanee Steals and Nafee Steals; along with a host of nieces, among them two devoted, Odessa Urquhart and Nancy Massenburg; nephews, cousins, and friends, among those four devoted, Vanessa Parham, Joyce Parham, Jean Hubbard and Lesley Cardoza.
A Funeral Service will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Tucker Celebration of Life Chapel, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg, VA. Rev. Dr. Antonio A. Tucker, Sr., officiating. Obituary Preview: Mrs. Zelma Delores Cone Harris of South Chesterfield, Virginia departed this life on Friday, May 16, 2024, at the home of her son and daughter-in-love. Delores was born August 18, 1938 in Richmond, Virginia to the late Zelma A. Dabney Cone and Willie C. Cone.
Delores was educated in the Dinwiddie County Public School System and graduated from Southside High School in 1958. After graduation, she went on to pursue her cosmetology license at Virginia State College, now Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA. She transitioned careers and was employed by Chesterfield County for numerous years. Delores accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church, Sutherland, Virginia.
Delores and the late John R. Harris, Jr. were married on July 3, 1982. They were happily married for thirty-two years. They loved each other immensely and cherished the wonderful marriage they shared.
Delores, a mother of three, enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. She loved shopping, watching her daytime soap operas and game shows that include: The Price is Right, Family Feud, and Wheel of Fortune.
She was predeceased by her parents, Zelma A. Dabney Cone and Willie C. Cone; husband, John R. Harris, Jr.; brother, Willie Norris Cone; sister-in-law, Jean S. Cone; mother-in-law, Carrie Jones Harris; father-in-law, Richard Harris; sisters-in-law, Gloria J. Harris and Marianna Harris; and brother-in-law, Emerson Harris.
Remaining to cherish her memories are her devoted daughter, Pamela E. Farley of South Chesterfield, VA; devoted son, Andre S. Farley (devoted daughter-in-love, Rochelle) of Chester, VA; devoted son, John R. On Monday, May 13, 2024, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend departed this earthly life at Petersburg Health Care in Petersburg, VA and entered eternal rest with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Jane Darnel Hilliard was born on December 9, 1945, in Southampton County, Virginia to the late Nathaniel Gay and Hilen Hilliard. She was educated in the Southampton County School System. Jane worked for Titmus in Petersburg, Virginia for over 30 years before retiring. After retirement she worked as a Home Health Care Aid for several years.
Jane accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a very early age and joined Pocahontas Temple Baptist Church in Wakefield, Virginia under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Lewis Allen. She served her church family with a faithful heart and humbled spirit.
Jane was preceded in death by her grandson, Roshad Hilliard and siblings, Nell Patterson, Elnora Gay, Doris Urquhart, Phyllis Ruffin, George Hilliard, Glen Hilliard, William Gay, Nathaniel Gay, Jr, Fred Gay, Leslie Gay, and Thomas Gay.
Jane leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Santana Gills (Kevin) of Chicago, IL and two sons, Robert Hilliard (Kim) of Prince George, VA and Anthony Hilliard (Virginia) of Wakefield, VA; three sisters, Carrie Hilliard (Puddin) of Windsor, VA, Gladys Stringfield of Surry, VA and Louise Stith of Wakefield, VA; four brothers, Leroy Artist and Archer Artis (Frenches) of Wakefield, VA, James Artist (Geraldine) of Georgia and Richard Gay of Windsor, VA; four grandchildren, Erica Short and Kayla Armand of Suffolk, VA, Sheronda Hilliard and Ronell Johnson of Prince George, VA; two devoted family members, Renda Mudrick (Mud) and Mary Hilliard of Wakefield, VA; additionally, Jane leaves eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to carry on her legacy.

Obituary Preview: Deborah "Debbie" Booker, 74, of Midlothian, VA, passed away on May 9th, 2024. She was born on November 16, 1949 in New York, New York to the late Mr. James Johnson and Ms. Beatrice Johnson. In addition to her parents, Deborah was predeceased by two brothers, Mr. Lorenzo Johnson and Mr. Larry Johnson.
Deborah is survived by her loving son, Mr. Franklin L. Booker and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ellson Booker. She will be dearly missed by her grandson, Mr. Franklin J. L. Booker and two granddaughters, Ms. Raven J. Booker and Ms. Brianna Edwards. Deborah was also a cherished great-grandmother to her great-grandchildren, Miss Dominique, Miss Paris, and Master Franklin. She is also survived by her nephew, Mr. Keshon Johnson; nieces, Mrs. Sparkle and Mrs. Sherise Johnson, along with other nieces and nephews.
Deborah attended William Howard Taft High School and furthered her education at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). She had a successful career with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), where she began as a Secretary and worked her way up to become a manager. Deborah held various positions throughout her time at NYCHA to include: Secretary, Assistant Housing Assistant, Housing Assistant, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, Assistant Manager, and Manager. She was highly respected in her field and even had the opportunity to teach at the NY City Housing Authority Training and Development Center, where she earned her shield and was appointed the status of City Official.
Deborah Booker will be remembered for her dedication, hard work, and loving nature. She leaves behind a legacy of achievement and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Genevieve Yaw, her brother, John Yaw, and sister, Cynthia (Yaw) Walbolt, and her husband, Andy Ross.
She is survived by her brothers, Daniel Yaw and Donald Yaw, sister, Tamara Yaw Spino, her daughters, Renee (Ross) Hernandez, Alicia Ross, and Dawn Ross as well as her grandchildren, Joseph and Alexis Hernandez, Alias Ross, Aaron Gibson, Anna Mcnew, and James Worrell, and her many pets that she loved and held dear to her.
Deborah was a free spirit who lived in Ohio until joining the Army, where she met the love of her life Andy Ross. After traveling the world, they spent over 20 years raising their family in Colorado. After the death of her husband in 2015, she traveled around visiting friends and family before settling into Petersburg, Virginia.
Cancer took away this precious life far too soon. She will be missed by all who knew her. Her memory is a blessing.

Carlos was affectionally called and known as "Funky Cold Medina", "Kid Finess", "Skeezo", and "Loso". Carlos was a great son, father, brother, fiancé, and a devoted friend to many who knew him. He was a member of Higher Way Ministries in Petersburg, VA. He was proud of being the head cook at the Checkered Pig BBQ and Ribs in Danville, VA.
Carlos number one craft and skill was freestyle rap, dancing, and anything musical. Later in life he actually became an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Carlos never met a stranger nor met anyone that he didn't willingly share his love. He was indeed a people person.
Carlos is survived by a son, Devin P. Medina; beloved mother, Sylvia Medina; two brothers, Antonio Medina and Lenard Medina. He also leaves to cherish his memory. his fiancé, Kathleen Thomas of Danville, VA; five uncles, among them devoted, George Macklin (Shirley), Cornelius Johnson, Jr. (Belinda), and David Branch; four aunts, among them devoted, Sarah Robinson and Tammie Reid; many cousins and friends, amongst them ex-wife and friend Donielle Medina.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Laura Jones; father, Valroy Spence; stepfather William Thomas Jones, Sr.; brother, William Thomas Jones, Jr.; and nephew, Harold Lucas.
Kermit was born on August 12, 1951 in Franklin, VA. During his early years his family resided in Emporia, VA. He received his early education from Emporia Training School. He often shared fond memories of family, friends and neighbors from his youth. When his family relocated to Portsmouth, VA, Kermit attended Royal Baptist and Ebenezer Baptist Churches. He enjoyed going to church, singing hymns, and learning Bible verses. His favorite scripture was Psalm 23, which he would recite often.
Kermit loved telling jokes, listening to music, and watching television. Before his health declined, it was typical to find him standing or sitting, patting his feet, and clapping his hands while singing one of his favorite songs with a big smile on his face.
He leaves to cherish his memory, four sisters: Helen Baines and Jean Young of Clinton, MD, Nell Gilliam of Emporia, VA, and Janice Thweatt (Earl) of Prince George County, VA; nephews: Howard Lucas, Jr. (Vivian) and Eric Gilliam; nieces: Wandra Haynes (Fred), Lynda Barnes, Annette Gilliam, Adrian Thweatt Cross (Walter) and Andrea Uchegbu (Chikere), a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends whom he loved dearly.

In her free time, Cynthia loved cooking, doing hair, and taking care of the children in her community. With an outgoing personality of gold, she lit up every room she walked into. She was a dedicated mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.
Along with her parents, she is survived by her two beautiful daughters, Alora Fenceroy and Aniya Fenceroy and their father, Darren Fenceroy. She also leaves to cherish her memories five siblings, Michael Solomon, Kevin Solomon (Nicole), Deatricke D. Griffin, Jasmine D. Griffin and James Justin Griffin; three nieces, Zeyanna Sulton-Solomon, Kayla Solomon and Kierson Solomon; nephew, Kevin Solomon, Jr.; many aunts and uncles to include: Martin Wheeler (Michelle), Doris Roberts, Noreen Joseph, Iva Charles (deceased), James Solomon, Jr. (Whitley Warrick), five uncles and three aunts from Durant, Mississippi; close friends, Tiana Gatling, Zaria Sulton, Indya Green, Chavala Hendricks and Joyce Bronson, along with a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mildred attended Petersburg Public Schools and graduated from Peabody High School in 1943. In 1947, she graduated cum laude from Virginia State College (now University) and several years later was conferred a Master of Science degree in Guidance and Administration by her alma mater. She continued with post-graduate work at the University of Richmond.
In 1987, Mildred retired after forty years with the Virginia Public Schools. She loved and took great pleasure in working as an Administrator, Teacher, and School Social Worker.
When Mildred was three years old, she was taken to Zion Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA by her parents and was baptized there in 1938 by the late Dr. J. B. Brown. Her life was a long and cherished love affair with Jesus Christ, her church, and its ministries. She felt privileged to have been involved in many aspects of Zion's growth and development during various stages of her life. In 1996, the Church School honored her for over fifty years of remarkable service as Teacher, Superintendent, and Vacation Bible School Director.
Serving many years as an active, creative member and leader of the Missionary Association, Mildred left an indelible mark on that organization's growth, strength, and influence. She was a member of The Links, Incorporated; Petersburg Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Virginia State University Greater Petersburg Alumni Association; Petersburg/Prince George Retired Teachers Association; the Twigs, the Cosmopolitans, the NAACP, and the Virginia Education Association Retired Educators.
Family, friends, students, and co-workers loved, cherished, and esteemed Mildred. She will always be remembered as unselfish and generous, sharing and caring for many in all circumstances.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by Burton Hayes, Jr., her devoted husband of over seventy years; her brother, William H. Scott, Jr.; and her sister, Esther S. Lindsey Lee.
Mildred is survived by two sons, Burton "Nicky" Hayes III of Ettrick, VA and Timothy S. Hayes (Tonette) of Chesterfield, VA; three grandsons, Micha S. Hayes (Rashalon) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Timothy S. Hayes, Jr. and Tanner Hayes both of Las Vegas, NV; two granddaughters, Ashley M. Hayes of Washington, DC and Tali Hayes of Chesterfield, VA; great-grandchildren, Micha Appling, Maury Hayes, and Amira Hayes; four nephews, William Gresham, Reginald Lindsey, Philip Lindsey, and Keith Jackson (Margaret); five nieces, Johnnye Evans (Fred), Gwendolyn Parrish, Gayle Hill, Jewel Baldwin; devoted niece and former caregiver, Debra Roache (Calvin); brother-in-law, Luther Jackson; devoted cousins, Bernita K. Hayes and Valerie B. Harris; goddaughters, Rev. Kimberley Shannon Copeland and Margot James Copeland; godsons, Anthony Barnes and Robert Okonkwo; devoted friends, Dr. Andrew and Gracie White, Ann C. Taylor, Deloris G. Jordan, Canzata B. Turner, Dr. Chinelo Okonkwo, Theresa Braden Saunders, Iris S. Brown, Stephanie F. McNeil, Wanda F. Taliaferro, Gertie B. Williams, Doris Adkins, Annie Parham, Roger Williams, Rita C. Ricks, Donna Koski, Rose Bland Muse, and Dr. Grady Powell.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Zion Baptist Church, 225 Byrne St., Petersburg, VA with Rev Odis B. Walker, Jr., officiating and Rev. Kimberly Shannon Copeland, eulogizing. She will be laid to rest at Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Rd., South Prince George, VA. Often, Cynthia was quick-witted and sharp-tongued but her heart was big. Cynthia was often received compliments on her looks and her hair. Yet, it was her heart that shone as the ultimate beauty.
Cynthia was a pillar of the community. From the small things of answering her door to people in need to organizing charity drives. Cynthia fed people in the community through church events and directly from her home. She helped with back-to-school drives and visited the sick. She was always checking in on others, celebrating their successes, and quick to offer encouraging words in difficult times and lend a helping hand to family, in-laws, neighbors, and even strangers. Her faith showed through her actions. Always willing to go the extra mile.
Cynthia was passionate about her faith, church, and charity and often indulged in charitable events. She was an active and devout member of her church and often volunteered. Her charity work and gift-giving with Samaritans Purse, Mercy Ships, and Operation Blessing were just a fraction of her giving and work to help others.
Cynthia was the family rock. She was our confider, our comforter, our fighter, our uplifter, our ROCK. She gave her husband, son, and every sister, brother, niece, and nephew, her love, her ear, her action, and prayer.
Cynthia is survived by her husband, Hasten Beamer, her son, Charles B. Jones; granddaughter, Micah Jones; sister, Veronica Jones Davidson (Robert); brother, Charles H. Jones, Jr. (Loretha); three sisters, Patracia Jones Vaughan (Derek), Jonetta Jones Kenny (Julius), Christian Jones Hairston (Thomas); nieces and nephews, Susan, Brittany, Bob, Charles III, Morgan, Emma, Josh, Kingston, Harlem, Trey, Emma, and Havana; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be a private memorial for extended family scheduled for Friday, March 29, 2024 at Tucker Funerals and Cremations from 12:30 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. The family will not be receiving guests after the memorial.
