Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, funeral services, and surviving family members. They also help to notify others of the person's death and provide an opportunity for people to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their education, military service, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a great way to personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. However, if there's an error or inaccuracy, you may be able to correct it by contacting the publication or online platform.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add a personal touch to the obituary and make it more memorable.

How do I find old obituaries?

Can I write an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

Yes! Even if someone passed away many years ago, you can still write an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What's the purpose of an online obituary?

An online obituary provides a permanent tribute to the deceased that can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection. It also allows friends and family to leave condolences and share memories in a guestbook or comment section.

Some online platforms allow you to create a "family tree" of connected obituaries, making it easy for visitors to navigate between related individuals.

How do I deal with errors or inaccuracies in an online obituary?

If you find an error in an online obituary, contact the website administrator or customer support team to report the issue. They should be able to correct it promptly.

What's the best way to share an online obituary on social media?

You can share a link to the online obituary on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. You can also use relevant hashtags to reach a wider audience.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an online obituary varies depending on the platform. Some websites review and publish submissions within minutes, while others may take several hours or days.

Can I remove an online obituary if I change my mind?

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respectful after they pass away?
