Norman Harley Gates - April 17, 1959 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (Cambridge)
Obituary Preview: Norman Harley Gates III, lovingly known as “Corky”, was born April 17, 1959, in Salisbury, MD.  He was the son of Norman H. Gates, Jr. and Jacqueline M. Gates of Head of Creek RD, Quantico, MD.  At a young age he was formally adopted by his paternal grandparents, Norman and Katie Gates.  On January 1, 2024, in his Randallstown, MD home, he returned to the gift giver and traveled to his eternal home.
Corky was educated in both Wicomico and Dorchester County Public schools.  After graduating in 1978 from Cabridge South Dorchester High School, Corky enlisted in the U. S. Army following up with serving in the National Guard.  After trying his hand at numerous occupations, he found his niche as a tractor trailer driver for Western Express.  He LOVED being a truck driver.  Corky got the biggest thrill out of traveling to different states and being able to share with family and friends the places he saw and the experiences he had.  If he had family living in the state, he was delivering to, he made certain to contact them.
Through his youth he attended St. James Free Methodist Church, participating in Sunday school and the choir.  He was an active member of the Jr. Jubilees Choir.  Corky was the only member that managed to get put out of the choir almost monthly.
He enjoyed hanging out with family.  He was always visiting Uncle Johnny’s, Aunt Bootsie’s, Uncle Ben and Aunt Emma’s, Pete and Doris’ Harlan and Hazel’s Cousin Lola’s, Miss Louemma’s, Mr. Herman’s.  There wasn’t a house on Head Of Creek Rd., that he didn’t visit at some point.  Whether to get something to eat or drink or to help in some way.
Corky loved cars especially the mechanics of them.  He was an avid and talented Chess and Backgammon player.  He enjoyed cards, fishing, crabbing and hanging out with his friends.  He was loyal and kind with a boisterous laugh and a giving spirit.   His favorite hobby was spending time with his family and friends.  He made sure to check in with everyone he could.  He was a wealth of knowledge if you wanted to know what was happening with a loved one.

Donna Lee Ross - November 26, 1953 - December 26, 2023

Departed: 12/26/2023 (Cambridge)
Obituary Preview: On December 26, 2023, while surrounded by family and friends, our Lord and Savior decided he needed Donna more than we did.
Donna Carson-Ross was born November 26, 1953, to the late William and Harriet Carson.
Donna, affectionately called DC by those that knew her, was born and educated in Connecticut. There she raised her 4 children until they relocated to Virginia in 1989.
Later in life she met Larry Ross. They married on September 5, 2010. She was a devoted wife until her passing.
In addition to her parents, Donnie was preceded in death by her brother, William (Billy) Carson.
Donnie leaves to mourn her passing, husband Larry Ross; her four children: Byron and Belinda Carson, Rhea Carson of Hampton Va, Alvena Carson-Gorham of Queen Creek AZ, and Contessa Williams of Powder Springs GA; her sisters: Denise Carson and Paulette Jones of Bridgeport Connecticut, Constance and Neil Morton of Hamden Connecticut;  a brother, Douglas Ballard of West Haven Connecticut; 12 grandchildren: Robert, Chanee, Kayla, Steve, Olivia, Dominick, Matrell, Amir, Byron Jr, Jada, Octavia  and Apollo; 4 great grandchildren: Gabby, Dame, B3 and Kyree, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; way too many to count.
Donnie was all about family. Nothing brought her more joy than being around her family, immediate and distant. Her home was opened to all who knew her. She would often interject herself in the planning and preparation of events. She just had to contribute and be a part of it. She was not content with just showing up and enjoying. It was not a burden to her; it was her pleasure.
Things will never be the same. She will be truly missed. When tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name
And took me by the hand. The angel said my place was ready, in Heaven far above,
And that I’d have to leave behind all those I dearly love. But when I walked through Heaven’s Gates, I felt so much at home, for God looked down, smiled at me, and told me “Welcome Home.” So when tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart; for every time you think of me
I’m right there in your heart.

Have you ever met my mama? She's as sweet as she can be.
Let me tell you about a woman who's given up her life...for me.
She's strong and wise; smart and tough. Filled with tenderness and love.
She picked me up and saved my life. She's my miracle from above.
Have you ever met a lady who's beautiful inside and out.
If you ever make her acquaintance, you'll know what I am talking about.
She's more than just a blessing, she's my daily inspiration.
She didn't give me life...but she's given me love; Surpassing any expectation.
Have you ever met a woman who's as proud as she is old.
She will give and give; without asking much. Her heart is pure as gold. You may never meet my mama, you may never see her smile. But if you see my mama,
stop and chat for a little while.
Have you ever met my mama? I hope one day you do.
Cause if you meet my mama you'll meet a woman who's honest and true.
You'll leave her presence with a full heart; she'll leave you with a nod. But once you go; you'll always know You were graced by an angel of God! Lovingly submitted, The Family

Wanda Renay Skinner - September 24, 1960 - October 22, 2023

Departed: 10/22/2023 (Cambridge)
Obituary Preview: Wanda Renay Skinner was born of Leroy McKinley Skinner and Anna Lee Skinner in Easton Md. Wanda is survived by her daughter Takiya L. Johnson, and 2 sisters, Tonya L. Skinner and Yvonne L. Skinner, nephew Carroll E. Skinner, niece Brooke M. Skinner, and a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and extended family and church members. Wanda fondly known as “Speedy” worked as a cashier at the Easton Acme for 15 years where she was coined the nickname due to her many customer service awards for speed and accuracy throughout her career there until her illness ended her tenure ; not just a job but a place she also considered as her work home with co-workers as extended family, and a place where she made so many friends; all of which she loved dearly and looked forward to seeing and serving on a daily basis! Wanda’s favorite color was purple and a near second was pink! She attended school in Easton, and she worked in the system where she was an aid for quite some time as she loved to work with children. She later worked at the Easton Acme and tried her hand as a contractor and worked in the commercial cleaning business and served several years at Black and Decker! She loved gospel music; soul music and she loved attending the Church services at Union Baptist Church. She often mentioned how wonderful the deaconesses were and how kind and loving the congregation was. As a child she loved cycling on her purple bicycle, and as she grew older, she kept in shape and enjoyed walking on a daily basis to get her exercise as many passersby would often stop to offer her a ride but she would often decline as she loved to walk! She was always at work on time with that amazing smile and “can do it” attitude! She was such a hard worker! Fashion was also a favorite, she loved seeing well-dressed people and being amongst the well-dressed! Wanda will be remembered for her infectious smile that lit up the world! She loved to sit and chat the time away with anyone that would listen! Even when succumbing to her illness, she would still make time to speak and chat with those that she knew, and she easily made friends so that there was never a stranger in her life! Wanda is loved by many and as we pay homage to the life she lived and look forward to seeing her again one day, for now we will say farewell until we meet again. The angels in heaven rejoiced when she was called home and we’re sure that the many family members and friends welcomed her into the Kingdom of God called Heaven. Annie Mae Hyland - Unknown - June 26, 2023

Departed: 06/26/2023 (Cambridge)
Obituary Preview: On June 26, 2023, after 92 years, Heaven’s Gate opened and received Annie Mae (Morris) Hyland.  Annie was born on March 30, 1931, in Hebron, Md to the late William and Ethel (Bailey) Morris.  Annie Mae received her education in the Wicomico County School system.
Annie Mae started her years of employment with Marvel Packing Company at 17 years old. She was also employed at White’s Jewelers of Salisbury, Maryland and then moved on to Coldwater Seafood Corp of Cambridge, Md until her retirement in 1992.  For several years after retirement Annie continue to work at Sarah, Margaret and Mollie’s Place in Hebron as a caregiver for the elderly.  In 1993 she found her calling as a Foster Grandparent working at Shore Up Inc. in Salisbury where she worked faithfully for twenty years until her health begin to fail.
Annie was joined in Holy Matrimony with Lester “Bootsie” Hyland on June 7, 1958.  She was happily married for thirty-three years until his passing in 1991.
Annie was a lifelong member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Hebron.  She served faithfully as President of the Usher Board for over 30 years until her health no longer allowed; attending numerous Usher Day services at other churches, representing St. Luke.  She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the United Methodist Book Club.  As a Bible study class member, it is known that she would stop and ask many questions until she understood.  Her favorite teacher, Bro. Charles Handy, would always oblige.  Annie had her special seat in the pew on the right side of the church, everyone knew not to sit in her seat!  She also had her unofficial parking spot in the front row behind the telephone pole.  If anyone happened to get to church before her, which was rare, they had to move if parked in that spot.
Annie was quite the shopper.  Her favorite stores were JC Penney and Boscov where she would always find a bargain.  She loved shoes and passed this love affair on to her daughter.  Her favorite saying was “You can have on a million-dollar outfit, but the shoes must match.”  She loved music and you could always hear her gospel music on Sunday mornings if you happened to walk by. After her husband’s passing, she enjoyed reading and doing crossword and word search puzzles.
Annie had a love for her family, especially her grandchildren and the infamous Morris clan: her brothers and sisters.  Visiting with her sister Freda and sitting on the porch was an everyday occurrence.  She couldn’t wait for her brother from Philadelphia. “Mick is coming home.” He wouldn’t stay with anyone but her.  We will never forget the year Juanita accompanied (she was the only one that would do it) her and Freda on their first plane ride to Texas to see their brother Robert “Tit”.  What a time they had!  They all enjoyed family reunions, cooking, and eating for days.
After her illness no longer allowed her to live alone, Annie moved with her daughter Jennifer (Janie) and son-in-love Michael for the last ten years of her life.  She went from 100 Elm St. in Hebron to 100 Heathfield Court in Middletown, DE, and the party was on until God called her home on that Monday afternoon.  She always stated, “I’m going home”, and would want to hop a ride with whomever came to visit from Hebron, especially if it was Reggie “Opie” or Ronnie D.
She attended the MOT Senior Center and the Christiana Care Evergreen Center while living in Delaware.  Annie regularly attended services at Simpson United Methodist Church in Wilmington, but never gave up her membership at St. Luke.
They all loved and called her Mom at Simpson, and some never knew her first name. She even found a special seat at Simpson enjoying the Men’s Choir on the third Sunday saying, “you know those men can sing!”  Of course, her favorite son-in-love, Michael was a member.
Being Mother, Mom, Auntie, Annie, and Annie Mae for 92 years, we have far too many stories to tell.  Never forgotten will be her vegetable beef soup, famous corn pudding, dumplings, and sweet potato pie.  We will always hear her saying “Being kind doesn’t cost you nothing, because the sun don’t shine on you always.” Also remember her love for God.
Annie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ethel (Bailey) Morris; husband, Lester “Bootsie” Hyland; grandchildren: Eugene Fooks and Rhonda Morris;  one sister, Freda Wharton, (Matthew “Junebug”); brothers: William “Billy” Morris (Odessa), Benjamin “Benny” Morris, (Theresa), Robert “Tit” Morris (Kathryn) and Milton Morris; mother and father-in-laws, Ralph and Edith Holland; sisters-in-law: Isabell Holland and Irene Brown;  brothers-in-law: William “Billy” Moore, Ralph “Teddy” Holland, and William “Billy” Holland.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Ronald Morris (Frances) of Hebron, Michael Hyland (Georgeanna) of Bear, DE, and Jennifer Brown (Michael) of Middletown, DE; a god-daughter, Bernice Beasley (Eddie) of Cambridge;  her blessing of 13 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosalee Moore of Hebron; a sister-in-law, Hattie Morris of Philadelphia, PA and Joyce Kelly (David) of Dagsboro, DE. Her special niece, who she called “my girl”, Mary (Beth) Morris. She also will be truly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, caregivers, other relatives, and friends. Lovingly Submitted The Family

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members, close friends, or a funeral home. In some cases, a professional writer may be hired to write the obituary.
