Jean Ravalli - December 01, 1927 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Oceanside)
Obituary Preview: Jean Howison Ravalli (Turner) - December 1, 1927 - April 28, 2024 Jean Ravalli passed away peacefully at 96 years young on April 28th in Brick, New Jersey where she had relocated to from Oceanside six years ago to be closer to family.
Jean was the matriarch of the Ravalli family and her greatest treasure was the family she created with the love of her life John. Born to a single mother, Vera Turner, in Bridgeport Connecticut in 1927, Jean was the youngest of three children (Bertil & Eleanor). She overcame great odds and moved around often during the course of her childhood. She moved to Long Island in 1937, eventually settling in Oceanside, where she would live for most of her life. There she met John and built their family surrounded by a tapestry of faith, friends, neighbors and extended family.
Jean Turner met John Ravalli when they were both in high school and working at the local A&P. When John went to fight in Europe during World War II they kept their love alive in letters - letters that she kept all of these years, reread and shared as she did with so many mementos and photographs illustrating a life well lived. Jean and John were married September 19, 1948 at the First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside where they later became church elders. They could always be found enjoying life together and set an example of a marriage based on both love and friendship.
In 1950 they bought a brand new house on Chester Street where they welcomed John Alan in 1952 and Charles Edward in 1954. They filled that house with memories and it was always a place where everyone felt at home. Jean had a zest for life and was always organizing activities with John and with her beloved sorority sisters whom she met at Oceanside High - from Bridge, The Garden Club, to Square Dancing and Cross Country road trips Jean was always ready to create memories and experiences. Later in life she found so much joy in her happy place, Briny Breezes Florida, where they made great friends and enjoyed the ocean every day.
She will be remembered for her sharp wit, her incredible memory, her ability to stay in touch with people near and far (including an impressive command of social media), and her fierce dedication to her family. Family was Jean's treasure, she documented every moment in photographs and cherished every one. She loved having her family together and relished every minute she could with her children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren until the very end. She lived a long life and she is now reunited with the love of her life, John - dancing, joking and having fun the way we all remember them. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her sons John Alan (Maggie) and Charles Edward (Robyn), grandchildren Jennifer Leigh (Michael Tebesceff), John Daniel (Jennifer), Ryan
Charles (ToniAnn). Matthew Todd (Elise) and her great grandchildren Madeline, Abigail, Jack, Samuel, Samantha and Evan.
She will also be dearly missed by her extended family Rose and Bruce Sellers, Michael Sellers, Joanne Sellers-Cole, Shirley Otten and many wonderful friends and neighbors.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband John, brother Bertil Turner, sister Eleanor Anderson and mother Vera Turner.
Please join the family to celebrate the life of Jean Ravalli, a visitation will be held on Sunday May 5, 2024 from 3:00 PM - 7pm at the Towers Funeral Home 2681 Long Beach Rd, Oceanside, NY 11572.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday May 6, 2024 at 10:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside 2701 Oceanside Rd, Oceanside, NY 11572. Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetery 210 Princeton Blvd. Calverton, NY 11933

George Lucas - June 14, 1924 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Oceanside)
Obituary Preview: George is survived by his wife of 74 years, Jean; his children: Marge (Bill), Cathy (Tony), and Billy; his grandchildren: Marisa (Justin), Serena (Bob), Michael (Debra), Lauren (Corey), Kaylee (Brian) and Eleni (Nebeyu); and his great-grandchildren: Christopher, Connor, Gavin, Keira, Maren, Sofia, Alexis and Adele.
Born in New York City on June 14, 1924 to James and Anastasia Lucas, he grew up in Queens with his brothers, Paul and Nick. As a young man, he played a lot of baseball and almost pitched against Yankee great, Whitey Ford. He joined the Saltus Fencing Club and became an accomplished fencer. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served from 1942 to 1946 as an aircraft maintenance specialist, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He subsequently worked as a florist, a sous-chef, and a furrier, eventually establishing his own successful business as a furrier.
In 1949, he married the love of his life, Jean. They eventually bought a home in Flushing in 1954. He was very active at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church as a member of the Parish Council and the St. Nicholas Men’s League. He was an active member of AHEPA for over fifty years. George was an avid bowler active in HAMBA, played racquetball into his seventies and golf well into his nineties. A huge sports fan, he was a Detroit Tiger fan, because everyone else rooted for the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers and he shared a first name with Tiger third-baseman, George Kell. He was an original season ticket holder for the NY Islanders.
First and foremost, he loved his family and friends. He loved going to Church on Sundays and afterward taking his whole family out to breakfast. He would come home on a Friday after work and take his family on spur of the moment road trips. Two of his favorite vacation spots were Woodloch Pines (for over 60 years) and Hilton Head Island. He loved to read so much that at age 50, he became an Evelyn Wood speed-reader so he could read even more. George’s favorite activity later in life was to enjoy a nice dinner out with his family and friends at one of his several “chosen” restaurants, where he would enjoy his martini and “shoot the breeze”. He was a kind and generous man who will be missed by everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services or donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?
