Obituary Preview: Michael Carney Hannigan, 62, of Ellsworth passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, after a yearlong courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh and was the son of the late Edward Martin Hannigan and Ruth Carney Hannigan Ballentyne. Michael was a Technician for J.M. Smucker Coffee and Tea Division in Washington. He was a 1977 graduate of Charleroi Area High School. Michael was very proud of his Irish heritage. He was an extremely talented guitarist and musician who enjoyed writing and recording his own music in his home studio. He was a member of several bands that played locally, including Nightstack, Fool Starr, Backstreet, 30 Stone, Bar Room Saints, Rain Dogs, Refuge, and Poor Annie. He was a die-hard fan of his beloved Steelers, Pens, and Pirates. He enjoyed preparing food for his weekly Steeler Sundays with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of over 38 years, Sherri Ross Hannigan; his pride, joy, and most valued possession, his daughters, Kayleigh (Greg) Glowaski of Pittsburgh and Kelsey Hannigan (Mark Cockrell) of Holly Ridge, North Carolina; his two amazing sisters, Margaret (Robert) Petrillo of Haddon Heights, New Jersey, and Maureen (William) Welch of Pensacola, Florida. He was the beloved uncle to Dawn Marie Mustain, Stephanie Blind, Ryan Petrillo, Melanie and Brandon Messner, and Kyle and Chase Ross. He also had several great-nieces and nephews. He was the loving owner of several dogs who were his most loyal companions. Michael also had the greatest friends who meant the world to him. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, where a blessing service will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, April 15, with Reverend Donald Chortos, officiating. Everyone is welcome to attend an Irish Wake at noon on Friday at the Drexel Hall of Saint Katharine Parish (formerly Knights of Columbus), 208 Abromaitis Street, Bentleyville, PA 15314. She was born March 6, 1948, a daughter of the late Norman Ray Eland and Mary E. Sable Eland.

Mrs. Fava was a graduate of the Mon Valley Catholic High School.

She retired from the Clerk of Courts office of Washington County. She was a member of the Saint Katharine Drexel Parish and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Dolores 1675,

Mrs. Fava enjoyed spending time with her husband and sons, and loved her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Louis Fava; sons, David Fava (Denise DeSimone) of Bentleyville and Joel Fava (Kerry) of Eighty Four; two grandchildren, Katey and Owen Fava; brother, Robert Eland of Tampa, Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is her sister, Margaret “Peggy” Ann Truchan.

He was born February 24, 1942 in Pittsburgh, a son of John H. and Margaret "Peg" C. Burns Dryer.

A veteran, Mr. Dryer served with the U.S. Marines at the beginning of the Vietnam war and was stationed in Okinawa and involved with the Laotian conflict.

He worked as a foreman for Patterson Construction in Monongahela for 30 years and was a member of the Laborers Union #286 in Brownsville.

Surviving are his children, Ted Dryer, Jr. (Kim) of Charleroi and Renee Dryer (Dave) of Kissimmee, Florida; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, John W. Dryer of Finleyville, JoAnn Lindley (the late Ron) of Eighty Four, Cathy Dryer of Largo, Florida, Dennis “Blue” Dryer (Anna) of Van Voorhis and Lee Ann Bular (Walter) of Bentleyville; five step-children and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are his first wife, Shirley A. Lorenz Dryer; his second wife, Darlene Lenhart Dryer; brothers, Robert J. “Plum” Dryer and Donald Dryer.

Surviving are a son, Corry Woods (Morgan) of Pricedale; two daughters, Jenny Woods of Canonsburg and Summer Lee of Washington; ex-wife Krystal Burgan of Finleyville; sister Jessica Rush (Raymond) of Clarksville; three step-brothers, Randy Tabron, Jr. (Kalee) of Belle Vernon, Michael Tabron, Sr. (Melissa) of Bentleyville, and Cylus Woods of Lone Pine; two step-sisters Breanna Woods of Butler, and Kortnie Woods of Lone Pine; step-grandmother, Mary Jane Woods of Washington; grandchildren Madelyn Woods and Niko Coyle and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Deceased are his brother, Nathan Woods; step-mother, Marlene Woods; parental grandparents, James J. Woods, Sr. and Pauline Helen Harris Woods and maternal grandmother Doris Lucille Godfrey Sebetich.

Obituary Preview: Warren J. Arleth, 77, of Bentleyville, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 20, 2022, holding the hand of his loving wife of 43 years, Susan Lorenzo Arleth.

He was born October 25, 1944, in Evanston, Illinois, a son of Warren E. and Dorothy Arleth.

He came to the Southwestern PA area in the late 1970s and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education from the California University of Pennsylvania.

Warren managed his own sales and marketing firm, followed by two decades working in private, faith-based education with FACTS Tuition Management. Following retirement, he volunteered with the Mount Calvary Cemetery for several years.

Along with his wife, Susan, he is survived by his children, Carmen (Emilio) Iasiello and Amy Arleth; grandchildren Betta and Domenico Iasiello, and siblings William Arleth, Virginia Hovland, and Fred Arleth.

A joyful, caring man, he was known to be dancing with his wife or laughing and playing with his children and grandchildren.

A devout Catholic, he was a member of the Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, the Knights of Columbus Council 5826, and was a fourth-degree member of the Bishop Phelan #911 Assembly.

Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial to be held in the Spring and details will be announced.

Private interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Coal Center.

She was born October 7, 1943 in Monongahela, a daughter of the late Michael and Josephine Renshni Oreski.

A graduate of the Charleroi High School, Mrs. Onusko obtained her bachelor’s degree in English from the California University of Pennsylvania.

She taught Advanced Placement English for the Parma City schools in Ohio.

Having a very creative mind, she loved decorating and loved to golf. She was very thoughtful when it came to helping family and others.

She is survived by her husband, John E. Onusko; son John Onusko and his wife Amy Enslow of Garden Valley, California; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Onusko was the last of her immediate family and, in addition to her parents, her brother Michael Oreski is deceased.

Her family is thankful for the family and friends who assisted Mrs. Onusko during her illness.

A private memorial service will be held in the near future.

Obituary Preview: Irene F. Hora Saniga, who lived most of her life in Bentleyville and was a very civic minded citizen, passed away Monday morning, January 10, 2022 at the age of 95. Born January 20, 1926 in Braddock, Allegheny County, she was the oldest girl of the six children of Alexander and Mary Hora. Irene was last of her siblings, who were Edward, Alexander, Alice, Henry and Lillian. A child of the great depression, she knew how to sacrifice and to survive hardships and be thankful for the good times. She was happily married to her husband, Milton, for 66 years until he passed away in 2015. Sadly, she leaves behind her cherished two children, Suzanne Skrypak (Gino Opice) and Mark Saniga (Jeanene); grandchildren Karl Skrypak, Natalie Skrypak, and Keith Saniga and one great-grandson Karl Skrypak III. Irene was dedicated to her community and loved Bentleyville and worked very hard to make it a better community. She was the first female of the borough council at a time when it was unusual. She became president of council, where she was able to promote and advocate for the town for well over 30 years. Through her efforts, Irene obtained grants to build Richardson Park and the new borough building. Bentleyville was in her heart. In addition, she was a Washington County committee woman and would transport people to vote for years. She was honored to be elected to the Tri State Borough Association as a board member representing all the boroughs in Pennsylvania. Irene was a member of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish. She was a proud member of the Bentleyville Democratic Women's Club and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Dolores 1675. She was a dedicated promoter of her heritage and spent over 25 years as an officer of the National Slovak Society, Assembly 377.

Irene was an accomplished baker with specialties, such as nut rolls, homemade blackberry pie, doughnuts, stuffed cabbage and ethnic foods.

In the end, all that matters is love and she shared her love with her family and community.

She was born April 11, 1961 in Washington, a daughter of Donna Scott Haywood Mudry of Ellsworth and the late William Haywood. Rhonda was a 1979 graduate of the Bentworth High School. On March 5, 1981 Rhonda married Robert Branch, Jr. of Cokeburg Junction, with whom she enjoyed riding on their Harley motorcycle together. She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates and NASCAR fan and also enjoyed her cats and camping. She enjoyed listening to the music of Bob Seger and the Grateful Dead. Also surviving are her four siblings, Lance Haywood of Centerville, Cathie Mudry of Charleroi, Christopher Daugherty of Ellsworth, Nels Strand of Ellsworth; three nieces, Elva Rae Strand of Washington, Carlie Haywood of Wheeling, West Virginia and Emily Wilson (E. Christian) of Chartiers Township; a step-son, Robert Branch III (Jennifer); three step-grandchildren, Emoni Spencer, Robert Branch IV and Olivia Branch, all of Sarasota, Florida. She was a member of the Saint Katharine Drexel Parish where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Loretta was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Dolores 1675 and was a past Regent and a District Deputy.

Surviving are her sisters, Andrea Remish and Bernice Remish, both of Bentleyville; nephews, Joe Sekora (Traci) and Brian Morgan (Jess); great-nephew, Tristan Coyle and great-niece Jordan Sekora.

Deceased are her husband, Michael Forte; a sister, Dolly Sekora and a niece, Johnette Sekora.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 20, 2021 followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Katharine Drexel, 126 Church Street, Bentleyville with the Reverend Edward L. Yuhas, Pastor, as celebrant.

In the funeral home and church, non-vaccinated individuals are required to wear masks or facial coverings and social distancing is to be maintained.

Interment will be in Monongahela Cemetery.

She was born November 23, 1942 in Brownsville, the daughter of Joseph F. and Anne Louise Kramar Filchock.

She grew up in Hiller and spent most of her life in East Bethlehem Township.

A graduate of Brownsville High School, California State Teachers College and a life-long learner, Joanne served her community as an elementary school teacher until her retirement from Bethlehem-Center School District in 2002.

For the past 15 years, she was the owner/operator of the Frank Burkus Funeral Home.

Joanne was an extremely kind and generous person with unwavering faith. She was dedicated to her family including her late husband, parents and in-laws, her children, her grandchildren, who she raised and shared her home, her great-grand daughter and her extended family, often putting her family's needs before her own.

She "never met a stranger" and had a way of connecting with people instantly and deeply and in doing so left a lasting impression on countless friends throughout her life. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her family, friends and the community. Obituary Preview: Nicholas "Nick" Zsamboky, 60, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, went home to be with Jesus on December 10, 2021, after battling Covid pneumonia.

Nick was born in Pittsburgh, on December 1, 1961, to the late Lesley Zsamboky and Eva Zsamboky. He spent the majority of his life in the city he loved most.

He was an alumnus of Churchill High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).

It was at IUP that he met the love of his life, Marci (Andrievk) Zsamboky, and they shared 36 loving years together.

Nick had a successful career in the steel industry, and this gave him the opportunity to travel the world extensively. He was most recently employed by GrafTech International.

His presence was larger than life. He never met a stranger and he went out of his way to help others. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, tinkering with cars, cheering on Pittsburgh sports teams, listening to jazz, and making memories with his family. He especially loved Bam, the dog he didn't want! Above all else, Nick's Christian faith was the central part of his life, and his family is at peace knowing he is in his forever home.

Nick had a strong love for family, especially his children. He is survived by his wife; three children, Rachel Zsamboky (Mark Stottlemyer) of Fall River, Massachusetts, Zachary Zsamboky of Latrobe, and Carrie Zsamboky of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and his beloved canine sidekick, Bambino. He also leaves behind his brother, Steve Zsamboky (Tunde) of Washington, and his "adopted parents," Carl and Patty Jorn.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 Thursday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2021 with Pastor Jeffrey Bender, officiating.

She worked at the Marianna Christian Outreach, which led to many years of filling her heart with joy.

Her past times included watching the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jeopardy, and episodes of Billy Graham sermons.

Mrs. Andrievk loved spending time with her family and appreciated her brothers and sisters in Christ.

She had a deep affection for her grandchildren and her dogs.

Her husband, Donald Andrievk, passed away September 1, 2005.

She is survived by her children Marci Zsamboky (Nick) from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Don "Sina" (Barbara) from Anna, Texas, John from Marianna, and Jeffrey (Christina) from Matthews, North Carolina; her grandchildren Rachel Stottlemyer (Mark), Zachary Zsamboky, Carrie Zsamboky, Joshua Andrievk, Sarah Andrievk, Megan Andrievk, Alyssa Andrievk, Ana Andrievk, Kaylee Andrievk, and Grey Andrievk and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her brothers, Fred and Raymond Markoff and an infant brother and sisters, Irene Petroff, Pauline Steficek, Lillian Valentic and two infant sisters.

Obituary Preview: Philip Edward Schaltenbrand, 79, of Scenery Hill, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2021 at Select Specialty Hospital in McKeesport. Born in a snowstorm on February 4, 1942, in Stonington, Pennsylvania, Philip was the son of Reverends Walter Elmer Schaltenbrand and Ruth Kathryn (Mengel) Schaltenbrand. As the second of three sons, Phil highly valued his relationships with his brothers, Walter and Wayne. Philip was an artist from a young age, participating in and winning art contests at his elementary school, and impressing his teachers with both his intelligence and creativity. He graduated from Selbyville High School in 1959 as salutatorian of his class (a title he proudly shared with his middle daughter, Ella). He attended Eastern Pilgrim College in Allentown for one year before transferring to Kutztown State College (later Kutztown University), where he earned his bachelor’s degree and was among 29 seniors included in the 1964 edition of “Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges.” After college, Phil spent one year teaching art at Blue Mountain High School in Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, before going on to earn his master’s degree from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. It was at Temple that he developed an interest in ceramics, something that would shape the path of his life. In the late 1960s, Phil was hired as an assistant professor of art at California University of Pennsylvania, teaching ceramics and art history. Known as Mr. S. to his students, he was popular and made countless lifelong impressions. He retired from teaching in 1997. In 1976, working as a teacher and making ceramics in a small shop on his farm, Phil was approached by neighbors who requested that he make personalized pottery to commemorate the upcoming bicentennial and the borough of Centerville. Doubting that it would sell, Phil reluctantly took on the endeavor. Through it, he unknowingly started an operation that would reach further than he could have imagined. Phil created and grew Westerwald Pottery (originally Barnyard Enterprises) over nearly five decades, securing a global reach of his famous blue and gray stoneware pieces. His business exploded in 1983 when H.J. Heinz Co. executives requested 7,000 recreations of an 1890s apple butter crock for their employees worldwide. Still in operation today, Westerwald Pottery has sold millions of pieces nationally and throughout the world. A nonstop worker his whole life, Phil spent most mornings, into his late seventies, getting up at 5 AM to prepare the factory for the day’s work. He often stayed up overnight when the kiln was fired, taking care that the pieces came out just right. He could also be found in the gift shop talking to customers about pottery and various other subjects. He used to joke with them that his “wedding jars” came with a guarantee for two extra years of marriage. Phil was a nationally recognized authority on early American stoneware pottery. He wrote three books on the subject, gave countless lectures, and had articles published in Ceramics Monthly and Country Living. He was fantastically well-read and knowledgeable and had a lifelong love of American history. In his spare time, he created caricaturized clay busts of American presidents. Phil was a member of Nemacolin Country Club in Beallsville and could be seen on the golf course four times a week. In 2007, he earned the distinction of being the second “winningest” club champion in Nemacolin’s 85-year history. A knee injury ultimately caused him to retire from the sport.

He was also a member of the Scenery Hill Lions Club.

Phil had three daughters who will remember him most for his incredible wealth of knowledge, his quick and unique wit, and his ability to turn just about anything into a joke. Though his time on earth has come to an end, the stories held in the hearts and minds of the countless people whose lives he touched will continue to fill the spaces that used to be filled by his booming voice. Genuinely one of a kind, Philip Schaltenbrand will be missed more than he could have ever known. Philip is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Ruth Schaltenbrand, and his younger brother, Wayne. Surviving are his three daughters, Cassandra, Ella, and Olivia; two grandchildren, Gwyneth and Lincoln; older brother Walt, and three nieces, Stephanie, Sonia, Shauna, and their families. He was a member of the Saint Katharine Drexel Parish and the Knights of Columbus Council 5826, Bentleyville.

Surviving is his loving companion, Beckie Shemasek and her family, John Shemasek (Annette), Jaime Shemasek, Brianne Rusilko (Alex), Brennan Shemasek, Mason Shemasek, Lilyanna Shemasek, Alex Rusilko, Julie Rusilko, Rock (the special family dog) and several cousins and friends.

There will be no visitation.
