Sister Mary Jon Wagner - April 14, 1942 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (Toledo)
Obituary Preview: Sister Mary Jon Wagner died at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio on April 5, 2022 after a brave battle with health issues over the past several months. The daughter of Allen and Elizabeth Wagner came to the convent in 1967 from St. Catherine Parish in Toledo, Ohio. She made her first profession as a religious in 1970 and her final profession in 1974.
Sister Mary Jon was the previous Congregational Minister for the Sisters of St. Francis in Sylvania, Ohio from 2012 to 2021. She also served a four-year term as Assistant Congregational Minister from 2008 to 2012.
Before entering the convent, Sister Mary Jon was very involved in her dad's plumbing business as well as other work with a business focus. As a young adult woman, she sensed a call to reach out, to assist and to support the less fortunate and to help create possibilities to improve life for others. The volunteer projects that her parents were involved in, including schools, in various organizations, in their own parish and in relation to their business customers inspired her own volunteerism. She eventually became a teacher and the relationships she made with the Sylvania Franciscans with whom she taught inspired her to pursue religious life.
In the 50 plus years she served the People of God as a religious woman, Sister Mary Jon spent 39 of those years in education. She held positions as a junior high teacher in Ohio and Michigan, an elementary school Principal in Minnesota and Ohio, and as Superintendent of the Sandusky Area Catholic Schools. She also served for 14 years on the Board of Lourdes University in Sylvania. While working in education in Sandusky, Sister Mary Jon was a member of the Board of Providence Hospital and later served on the Board of Providence Care Center and the Commons of Providence Board. These were healthcare ministries sponsored by the Sisters.
In a 2020 interview for her 50th Jubilee, Sister Mary Jon was asked to share what she perceived as her legacy as a Sylvania Franciscan. She replied, "(I have) moved the gifts I have been given to call and challenge others to move their gifts to the next level—to become involved in building Franciscan relationships-to work toward the expansion/widening of the vision to be inclusive of the whole for the life of the Congregation." Those who worked with her can attest to her ability to fulfill this legacy. One of her favorite passages from Scripture, I will make all things new. (Isaiah 43:19) may be the foundation of this legacy and the driving force behind her lifelong love and gratitude for her family, friends and her Community of Sisters as she accepted the invitation to be a Servant Leader among us.
Sister Mary Jon will be dearly missed by Sister Judy Ann Beaudry her long-time friend and compassionate care giver, her Sisters in Community, her family and friends and the caregivers at Rosary Care Center and Flower Hospital.
She is survived by her brother, Richard (Jolene) Wagner; nieces, Carey (Don) Manders, Amy (Dennis) Kazmierczak, Kelly (Mason) Hall; nephew, Chad Pietkowski; niece, Tara (Brad) Miller; and great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Visitation for Sister Mary Jon will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel where the Funeral Mass will follow at 4 p.m. Live Streaming of the Funeral Mass is: https://video.ibm.com/channel/RvdadQRjbGk

Sister Myra Ciesielski - April 30, 1936 - April 01, 2022

Departed: 04/01/2022 (Toledo)
Obituary Preview: Sister Myra Ciesielski died at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio on April 1, 2022 surprising her Sisters, family and caregivers after a somewhat brief time dealing with serious health issues. The daughter of Walter and Agnes Ciesielski came to the convent in 1953 from St. Ladislaus Parish in Hamtramck, Michigan where she had been taught by the Sylvania Franciscans from elementary grades through high school. Her religious vocation was inspired by her aunt, Sister M. Natalie, a Sylvania Franciscan, and the joy and friendliness of the Sisters inspired her to follow their lifestyle. She professed her first vows in 1956 and her final vows in the congregation in 1959.
In her 65 plus years in religious life, Sister Myra ministered to the People of God in a variety of ministries. She was well prepared for her ministries with a B.A. in Education and English from Mary Manse College in Toledo; a M.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Detroit in Detroit; a M.A. ED. in Non-Public School Administration from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota; and a M. A. in Pastoral Theology from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana. Her ministries included 14 years teaching at elementary schools in Ohio, Michigan and Minnesota; 19 years as principal in schools in Minnesota and Ohio; 8 years as a Pastoral Associate in Ohio; and later in life she was involved in a variety of roles in eldercare in Ohio and Minnesota. Sister Myra and her dear, friend Sister Gwendolin, retired to the Motherhouse in Sylvania in 2018 where they continued to bring sunshine into the lives of the Sisters at Our Lady of Grace Assisted Living. Sister Gwendolin died within a year and Sister Myra continued to help the Sisters celebrate and enjoy many feast days and holidays with parties and special treats. No April Fool Party this year!
Before her 60th Jubilee in 2016, Sister Myra reflected on her years of ministry to the People of God and realized that she had more life behind her than in front of her and she hoped to be able to continue to share her many gifts and talents with others in any way she could despite some physical challenges. She wrote, "Without counting the cost or looking for self-gratification, I wish the things I do in the future will help build up the kingdom so more people will know, love and serve God….I appreciate the support of family and friends, community and clergy who have helped me become the person I am today. God is good…I would like to continue being His chief witness!" Yes, indeed, good Sister, you have accomplished this and many other goals in your life.
Sister Myra is survived by her sister, Carol Atherton (Ray); brother, Walter Ciesielski (Irena); and many other loving family members and friends. She will also be missed by her Sisters in Community and her caregivers at Our Lady of Grace and Rosary Care Center. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, where the Funeral Mass will follow at 4 p.m. Face masks and social distancing are being requested. Having lost both parents at a young age, George and his sister Helen were then raised by their brother Garth, who stepped into the role of parent for his younger siblings. George enlisted in the US Navy at age 17, and proudly served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater, engaging in combat in the Tarawa and Kwajalein Atolls. Upon returning home to Toledo after his four years of service, George's path led him to the love of his life, Marian, and they were married on February 4, 1950. Throughout nearly 70 years together, George and Marian enjoyed a full and active life, that included travel to places such as Japan, the Bahamas, and Las Vegas, attending Studebaker Drivers Club events throughout the midwest in either his Hawk or Lark, as well as enjoying their family during frequent gatherings and holiday celebrations. Automotive interests led to George's employment at Rubini Motors, where he spent 40 years as General Manager and Vice President of Rubini Enterprises. Through his connections at Rubini, he was introduced to the Reynolds Corners Rotary Club, which he joined in 1962. George was a Paul Harris Fellow and held numerous club officer positions over the years, including serving as the club's president.
George is survived by his children, Terrence (Peg) Turpening, Kelly (Dave) Rejent, and George (Julie) Turpening III; sister-in-law, Nina Leitzy; and brother-in-law Sam Hoover; grandchildren, Kerry (Mike) Burgdorfer, Pete Rejent, Sarah Turpening, Karen (Andrew) Dziengelewski, Kylie (Rob) Sislowski, Phil (Leslie) Mahaney; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Liam, Bryce, Sam, Kristopher, Allison, Camren, Crystal, Jonathan, and Oliver; and great-great-granddaughter, Lily. George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marian in 2019; his older brother, Garth; and sister-in-law, Catherine; his sister, Helen; and his nephew, Larry Turpening.
The family would like to thank Ohio Living Hospice for the great care they provided in George's final days, especially Tiffanie, Nicole, and Kathie — who had also been a long-time caregiver to Marian, so was a special comfort to George and the family. They would also like to thank the caring staff at the Elizabeth Scott Community, where George had recently had a stay.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 7, 2022, 2:00–8:00 p.m. at Thomas I. Wisniewski Funeral Home, 2426 N. Reynolds Rd, Toledo, OH 43615. Funeral services will be Friday, April 8, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment at Toledo Memorial Park. www.wisniewskifuneral.net

The daughter of Anton and Alice Ottrock came to the convent in Sylvania in 1952 from Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish in Detroit, Michigan, to begin preparation for becoming a Sister of St. Francis. In her community she enjoyed her dear friends, Sisters Elaine and Rosalma, with whom she shared special life experiences and ministry over the years. Learning of Sister Kate's death, Sister Rosalma remarked, "Sister Kate will be missed by her family, friends, and Sisters, but I bet she herself won't forget us as she celebrates her eternity in God's heavenly home with the music she loved so much." Sister Kate herself requested that in addition to the Franciscan symbol
of her community she be buried wearing the "Mizpah" (necklace) which Sister Elaine bought for her in the 1980s. "May the Lord watch between us." Sister Elaine died in 1986 of cancer at age 38.

Mary Elizabeth Hubbard - April 08, 1924 - February 01, 2022

Departed: 02/01/2022 (Toledo)
Obituary Preview: Mary Backer Hubbard, 97, passed peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday February 1, 2022. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 8, 1924 to John W. and Mary (Askew) Backer. She married John R. (Bob) Hubbard on September 1, 1950. Mary attended Western High School and Goucher College in Baltimore. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Zoology. While attending the University of Vermont, Mary spent her summers as a research assistant in genetics at the University of Pennsylvania, and also at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
Mary's library career began in high school when she was a part-time student assistant at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore. It continued when she was appointed librarian at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, Baltimore. From there she attended the University of Wisconsin and received her Master's of Library Science degree. Later, she became the first professional librarian at the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County which is now University of Toledo Medical College (UTMC). Mary was adventurous and had decided to pursue employment which would not only further her career, but further her travels west. She had planned on working in different cities with her ultimate destination being California. The first westward employment location was Toledo, Ohio. In Toledo, she met Bob Hubbard in a church fellowship group called "The Godwin Class". Bob had started the group as a way for younger members to fellowship and have fun. Bob's popularity and sense of humor won her over and they were engaged to be married six months after meeting. Although she never moved from Toledo, Bob and Mary shared similar passions for travel and adventure. During their 49 years of marriage, they had visited every state in the U.S. and several Canadian Provinces. After Bob passed in 1999, Mary continued her travels in Europe. She had visited Poland, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Argentina, Chile, England, and Scotland.
Mary had been involved in numerous organizations which reflected her interests both professionally and personally. Sister Maria Goretti Sodd - September 03, 1930 - December 22, 2021

Departed: 12/22/2021 (Toledo)
Obituary Preview: Sister Maria Goretti Sodd died at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio on December 22, 2021. The daughter of Abraham and Sarah Sodd came to the convent in Sylvania in 1949 from St. Joseph Parish in Toledo, Ohio to begin preparation for becoming a Sister of St. Francis. As a teenager she wanted to be a nurse or a missionary in a foreign country but decided to do missionary work in her own country and joined the Sylvania Franciscans who she especially admired and became a teacher and principal instead.
Sister Goretti made her First Vows in 1952 and final Vows in 1955. Her professional background included a B.S. and M.A. degree from the University of Detroit in Detroit, Michigan and a M. A. in Pastoral Theology from the College of St. Mary-in-the-Woods in Terra Haute, Indiana. She taught elementary grades at Our Lady Queen of Heaven in Detroit, Michigan for the first 16 years of her religious life. She then became an elementary school principal for 21 years in Catholic schools in Sandusky, Bowling Green and Sylvania, Ohio. She worked at Lourdes College as Director of Continuing Education for nine years and as a Student Advisor for one year. She then co-directed the Sylvania Franciscan Associates for eight years and served the residents as a visitor at Rosary Care Center until she moved to Our Lady of Grace Hall, an assisted living facility for the Sisters. Sister entered her Third Age Ministry of Prayer in 2014 and served in that capacity until her death.
Sister Maria was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Boger and Mildred Bland; brothers, William Sodd and Ellis Sodd. She is survived by her sisters, Caroline Bukovics and Joanne Rinaldi; and brother, Vincent Sodd; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Sister Maria had many opportunities to travel in her lifetime. She visited 12 countries in Europe with three other Sisters, experienced the Franciscan Pilgrimage in Italy, and toured the Holy Land where she visited, among many sacred places, the burial sites of Abraham and Sarah, her parents' namesakes. To know Sister Maria Goretti was to know a relational person long before it was popular to be one. She took the First Commandment very seriously and treated everyone as a friend and as an equal with a special place in her heart for those on the margins of life. She loved life and shared her wonderful sense of humor with anyone and everyone she met. She was a "glass-half-full" kind of person who came from a large Lebanese family where she served as the matriarch in the later years. Her favorite Scripture quote was, "The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want." She also quoted Art Buchwald who once said, "The best things in life aren't things."
Sister will be missed by the Sisters in her Community as well as by her loving family, her caregivers, and the many people whose lives she touched in her 69 years in religious life.
There will be a Welcoming at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at 1 p.m. Visitation will continue until the Funeral also on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel.
Because COVID is still active, the Sisters ask those in attendance to please safeguard each other through some degree of social distancing plus wearing masks, if you so choose. Live Streaming of the Funeral Mass is: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/RvdadQRjabGk Once reaching this web site you will be asked for a password. The password is Sisters!!
