Evelyn Louise Bennett - March 23, 1934 - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (Corydon)
Obituary Preview: Evelyn Louise (Goben) Bennett was born on March 23rd, 1934, in rural Lucas County Iowa. Evelyn passed peacefully at Story Medical Senior Care facility on April 3rd, 2024. She was the fifth of seven children born to the late Walter and Mary (Grove) Goben. Evelyn graduated from Cambria High School in 1952.
Shortly after graduation, Evelyn was united in marriage to Carl Laverne Bennett at the Mt. Ayr Church of Christ on June 2, 1952. After their marriage, the couple moved to Charleston, South Carolina where Carl served in the United States Navy, Evelyn started her first job as a bank teller and they welcomed their first son, Daniel. The couple returned to Iowa in 1955, bought a farm north of Promise City, and extended their family to include David, Duane, Donald, Carla and Daryl. While raising six children, Evelyn gardened, drove a tractor, cooked numerous meals, kept up with the never ending laundry and the books for the farm. Amazingly, she did all these things while ensuring the kids were all dressed and ready for church nearly on time three times a week.
Being a wife, mother and grandmother was her life, Evelyn possessed the kind of tenacity and grace required to do all of those things very well. Evelyn was able to mend a hurting heart or torn coveralls in equal measure. She was a strong woman with a strong faith in Christ and raised her children to have strong values.
Carl and Evelyn loved nothing more than a house full of family. Evelyn was wonderful cook so nobody would leave hungry. She made the best beef and noodles, and her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls and pies were also family favorites. There may have even been a family fight or two over her coconut cream pie. Evelyn enjoyed helping her kids with 4-H projects, supporting their school activities and later in life following her grandkids and great grandkids.
After the last child was nearly raised, she began work as a Homemaker Health Aid in Wayne County. This career would span over a decade, and it became something she dearly loved. Carl and Evelyn retired after 40 years of farming and moved to Corydon in 1995. In 2017, Carl and Evelyn were blessed to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Evelyn enjoyed her last 5 years in Homestead of Centerville where she was cared for greatly.
Left to mourn the loss of Evelyn are five children: Daniel Bennett (Nancy), David Bennett (Cheryl), Donald Bennett (Deb), Carla Gall (Brian), Daryl Bennett (Kathy) Daughter-In-Law: Rebecca Bennett. Eleven grandchildren: Nathan Bennett (Michelle) Annette Harvey (Dustin), Leo Bennett, Kate Bennett, Megan Bennett, Ryan Bennett (Sarah), Lauren Bennett (Michael Sanchez), Renae Beebout (Aaron), Courtney Karns (fiancé Cody), Walker Gall, and Taryn Gall. Eleven great-grandchildren: Hunter Bennett (fiancée Christy), Aubrey Bennett, Kinley Harvey, Reese Harvey, Bennett Harvey, Desmond Bennett, Nora Heimbach, Elijah Beebout, Tollen Beebout, Isaiah Beebout, and Theodore Beebout. Three siblings: Dwight Goben, Pearlene Hull, and Glen Goben. Sisters-in-Law: Dixie Larson and Roma Goben.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her son Duane, an infant great-granddaughter, Maya Harvey. Three siblings: Gerald Goben, Jim Goben and Wayne Goben and Sister-In-Law: Doris Johnson.

Maxine E Whiteley - August 18, 1925 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (Corydon)
Obituary Preview: Maxine Whiteley passed away on, February 26, 2024 at the home of her daughter, Donna near Chariton, Iowa. Maxine was born on August 18, 1925 at home in Milo, Iowa to Frank and Ethel Whitlow. Maxine was the eighth of twelve children born to this union.
At 4 years of age, Maxine and 2 of her siblings were sent to the Annie Wittenmeyer Home in Davenport, Iowa. In 1930 Charles and Elma Breuer adopted Maxine to join Marvin, her new half-brother, to complete their new family and they lived on a farm west of Corydon. She attended Clay Center country school and Corydon High School.
On November 23, 1942 she met the love of her life, Dail Whiteley and they were married on January 10, 1944. Dail soon left to serve his country in the US Navy during WWII and during this time their first-born son Gary Dail arrived. Upon returning home from the war, they moved to Corydon where Dail started his own electrical business and in 1947 Ronald Dean was born and Donna Kay followed in 1948.
In 1955, Dail and Maxine moved their family to a dairy farm west of Corydon where they lived for many years. Maxine was a hard worker with lots of long days filled with farm work, housework and gardening to feed their growing family. If something needed to be done, it was to be done right or not done at all was the work ethic she instilled in each of her children. She canned, preserved and froze at least 500 quarts of food and raised, dressed and froze 200 chickens annually to help feed the family. Sunday dinners were always fried chicken with the usual side dishes, homemade noodles, rolls and numerous choices of different pies on the menu. She even found time to work nights and made all of the pies for Nick’s Cafe. In 1957 another daughter named Cindy Lou arrived and in 1959 Randy Ray was born to complete the family. Being one of the younger couples in their neighborhood, they spent many hours helping their neighbors who needed help with field work, gardening or poultry harvesting.
After several years on the farm working and raising their family, it was time to move back into Corydon to retire. In 1978 their son, Ron, built their new home with a smaller yard and garden and the canning and freezing activities continued on a smaller scale.
Maxine found time to join in activities and learned how to play bridge, bowl, play golf and tennis and go on long walks with friends as well as making many enjoyable crafted items. She also continued to make her wonderful pies which were requested from friends and she found time to make over 1,000 pies for the Coastal Mart in Corydon over a two-year period of time. Dad is gone now and I can’t ask him, but I think he had to drive to Coastal to buy an extra piece of her pie during those couple of years! Knitting afghans for her grandchildren and making cross stitched baby blankets for all of her great-grandchildren also kept her hands busy over the years. Maxine loved to entertain and made fabulous meals which included her famous noodles, bread and rolls, cookies, candies and pies that will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her and enjoyed her goodies. She was also a great story teller sharing stories of her childhood, silly things that happened to her throughout life and usually there were really funny stories about herself and Dad.
Soon after moving to town, they began making the annual trek as snow birds to the warmer weather of Arizona where their sons, Ron and Randy lived at the time. She enjoyed playing lots of tennis as well as card games, attending spring training Cub games with Dail and entertaining many friends with lots of meals which included those homemade pies.
Downsizing once again became necessary in 2000 when Maxine suffered a heart attack. So, another new but smaller home was built in 2001, with a smaller yard and garden being enjoyed once again. In 2014 Maxine suffered from failing eyesight and it was finally time for “real retirement”. They sold their home and moved to Homestead Assisted Living in Chariton, Iowa. No yard or garden to tend and no baking, but lots of card games, bingo and other activities and again making many new friends filled their time.
In March of 2018 Dail and Maxine moved to Corydon Specialty Care where they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on January 10, 2019 with their family, friends and residents. They also celebrated their 76th anniversary in 2020 before Dail passed away on October 31st, 2020.
Maxine is survived by her sons Ron (Joan) Whiteley, Kentland, Indiana; and Randy Whiteley and Special Friend, Denese Bankus, Corydon, Iowa. Daughters Donna (Thierry) Amice, Chariton, Iowa; and Cindy (Jeff) Stewart, Corydon and Grandchildren Kellie (Tony) Sinclair, Melrose, Iowa; Mike (Erin) Curran, Woodburn, Iowa; Chris Whiteley, Celina, Texas; Chad (Amy) Whiteley, Euless, Texas; Sarah (Chad) Peck, Promise City, Iowa; Lorah (Ryan) Arnold, Corydon, Iowa; Jason Whiteley, Hartford, Ohio; Brad (Trish) Whiteley, Speedway, Indiana and Matt (Ryanne) Whiteley, Columbus, Indiana.
Great Grandchildren Kolby and Fiancé Hunter McAninch, Luke, Cole and Wyatt Sinclair, Melrose, Iowa; Conner (Sunnie) Whiteley, Euless, Texas; Addison and Cade Whiteley, Euless, Texas; Riley (Cade) Pelzer, Red Oak, Iowa; Reese Brown and Brystal Peck, Promise City, Iowa; Shayden and Hagan Arnold, Corydon; Cierra Hildebrand, Manson, Iowa; Sidney Hildebrand, Winterset, Iowa; Sage Hildebrand, Ames, Iowa and Shawn Partlow, Woodburn, Iowa.
Great-Great Grandchildren Adrian Henry Mayfield, Perry, Iowa; Graham Michael and Ja’Niyla Whiteley, Speedway, Indiana; Emma Grace Whiteley, Columbus, Indiana and Emberlynn Whiteley, Euless, Texas.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her kindness, gentle words, sense of humor and her love of God.
Maxine was preceded in death by her biological parents Frank Whitlow and Ethel Alyward Whitlow and adoptive parents Charles and Elma Breuer. Her Father-in-Law, Irvin E. Whiteley and Mother-in-Law, Sarah Emma (Todd) Whiteley; her Husband, Rex Dail; and first-born Son, Gary Dail and Daughter in Law Connie Whiteley, Celina, Texas; and Son-in-Law Ethan Allen (Donna) Towne, Chariton, Iowa. Siblings Dwight Whitlow; Dwaine Whitlow; Max Whitlow; Marjorie (Whitlow) Feight; baby Lester Whitlow; Paul Whitlow; Marguerite (Whitlow) Nightingale; James Whitlow; Clifford Whitlow; Raymond Whitlow; Harry Frank Whitlow Jr. and half-brother, Marvin (Norma McLin) Breuer. Brother-in-Law, Irvin Jr Whiteley and Sister-in-Law Geneva (Ockerman) Whiteley. Nephew, Jerry Breuer; Niece Dixie (Breuer) McMahan, and many Nieces and Nephews from both of her biological and adoptive families.

Jim spent his early years growing up on the Chambers Farm located along Pony Farm Road east of Leon. He attended elementary school in a one room school house a mile east of his home and then graduated with the Class of 1956 from the Leon High School.
Knowing that his parents could not afford to send both he and his sister Sheryl to college at the same time, he left for Wyoming the day after graduating from high school. He lived with his Uncle Russell and Aunt Alma in Casper and they helped him gain employment in the booming oil field industry with the W.C. Norris Mfg. Co. He worked as a salesman in the oil fields and traveled throughout the western states selling supplies to the many working oil rigs. To this day, he credits his boss, Leroy Mitchell, with much of his success in life. He often said that if he had only kept all of the silver dollars he got as change while out west, he would have been a rich man today.
While in Casper, he met and then married Carolyn Joines in 1958. During the marriage, Jim was promoted by the oil company and transferred to Williston, North Dakota. He continued working in the oil fields often traveling into Canada.
Sons James Kent and Jeffrey William blessed this marriage.
In 1967, after the oil company closed, Jim and his family returned to make their home in Leon, Iowa. Jim was self-employed as a custom corn sheller, became a farm fertilizer/insecticide applicator, worked as a grain elevator manager, and became an owner/operator trucker. His first truck was an old, red Mack that hauled many bushels of both corn across the Midwest and beans to the Mississippi River. It wasn't long before he chose the big Kenworth as his favorite truck to drive.
On July 4, 1974, Jim married Roberta under a huge oak tree in the Kingdom of Calloway, Missouri. He welcomed Roberta's two children, Token and Dustria to his family.
Jim and Roberta have made their home in Corydon, Iowa ever since. They joyously welcomed a son, Jared Russell Chambers in 1977. With a crew of wonderful drivers which included his oldest son Kent, Jim continued as owner of a trucking company for several years, running multiple Kenworth's, Peterbilt's and other trucks throughout the United States. Jim's love of Kenworth trucks led him to ordering a new, two-tone blue W-900A back in 1977. This truck was his pride and joy and it showed, as not everyone was allowed to drive it. Even Kent wasn't allowed to drive it until the “new” was well worn off of it!
Then in the early 1980's, a small project in their back yard led to his eventual ownership of dozers, backhoes and other heavy equipment. Today, you can drive around southern Iowa and see the many projects he worked on throughout the years – from farm ponds and terraces to large school and hospital expansions, new home sites along with water & sewer main projects. He “retired” in 2005 but continued to boss Jared and his crew around for several more years.
Jim was extremely proud of and loved his family more than you'll ever know. But, it was extremely hard for him to show how much he cared and he often left his kids doubting. Jim and Roberta's family includes:
Jared and his wife, Pam, have one son, Jett Russell, of Corydon.
Kent and his wife Barb live in Lowell, Arkansas and have four children, Amy, Tony, Angela, and Tiffany. Amy, from Lowell, Arkansas has Christopher, Kenli, Lexie, and Brendon. Tony resides in Lowell, Arkansas. Angela and her husband Chad, from York, Nebraska, have three children, Eden, Jake, and Eli. Tiffany is married to Cameron and they live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jeff and his wife BJ have one child, Alyssa. She has two children Christopher and Tru. They all reside in Bakersfield, California
Token and his wife Tammie, have one child, Trish. They reside on a farm near Louisburg, Kansas.
Dusti and her husband Daren of Corydon have four children, Teela, Trevor, Winston, and Raquel. Teela and her husband Tyler live in Melcher and have four children, Elizabeth, Memphis, Luxie, and Waylon. Trevor and his wife Maddison of Corydon have two children, Trice & Moxen. Winston is serving in the United States Air Force, based in Joint Andrews Base at Fort Washington, Maryland. Dr. Raquel lives in Des Moines.
Jim's sister, Janet, resides in Leon, Iowa.
Jim and Roberta also have their beloved bulldog, Nala.
When this big family of over 40 got together, it was quite an event. Jim's private grin lasted for weeks..
Every time you hear Frank Sinatra sing “He did it his way”, remember Jim.
On October 17, 2023, Jim left his earthly home in his two-tone blue Kenworth loaded with his D-7 Cat and his bulldog, Oliver, riding shotgun with him. Jesus was looking for a 'cat skinner' to get some dirt work done.
Private burial services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Corydon Fire Department

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services or donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check with the specific publication or platform for their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may require you to submit through a funeral home or online portal, while others may accept direct submissions from family members.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars or more.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. Just be sure to store it in a safe place where it can be easily found after your passing.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Should I include humor in an obituary?

If the deceased had a great sense of humor, it's perfectly fine to inject some levity into the obituary. Just be sure to keep it tasteful and respectful.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's values or spirit.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased's life or death that you'd rather not share publicly, it's okay to omit them or phrase them discreetly. Remember that the goal is to honor the person's memory, not to sensationalize their passing.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause instead of sending flowers. Be sure to specify the organization and any relevant details.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the text multiple times for spelling, grammar, and factual errors. It's also a good idea to have someone else review it before submission.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published. However, some online platforms may allow corrections or updates within a certain timeframe.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check their policies before submitting.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to reprint an obituary on a significant anniversary or special occasion, check with the original publication or platform for their reprint policies.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

DON'T hesitate to ask! Funeral homes often provide guidance or writing services. You can also hire a professional obituary writer or seek help from a friend or family member with strong writing skills.

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Taking on this task during bereavement can be overwhelming. Consider enlisting support from loved ones or seeking guidance from a funeral director or counselor. Remember that it's okay to take your time and prioritize self-care during this challenging period.

Can I include social media handles in an obituary?

If the deceased was active on social media and you'd like to share their profiles or hashtags, many publications now allow this. Just be sure to follow their guidelines for formatting and content.

What if I'm unsure about what to say in an obituary?

DON'T worry! Start by brainstorming memories and anecdotes about the deceased. You can also look at examples online or consult with others who knew them well. The goal is to capture their essence and spirit in a few paragraphs.

Can I include funeral service details in an obituary?

Absolutely! Providing details about visitation hours, funeral services, and burial arrangements helps ensure that loved ones can attend and pay their respects.

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what should be included in an obituary?

If family members or friends have differing opinions about what should be included in the obituary, try to find common ground through open communication. Ultimately, it's up to the primary decision-makers (e.g., spouse, children) to make final decisions about content.
