Evelyn June Vandevender - December 07, 1934 - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (Muncie)
Obituary Preview: Lake Mary, FL - Evelyn June Matthews (Anglin) Vandevender passed away the morning of May 10, 2024, at the Aspire at Lake Mary Rehabilitation Center in Lake Mary, Florida at the age of 89 years.
Evelyn was born on December 7, 1934, in Jamestown, Tennessee, to her parents, Arthur Allen Matthews and Thelma Ruth Reagan Matthews. Evelyn moved to Muncie, Indiana, at a very young age with her mother Thelma and her stepfather Lee C. Anglin. Their first home was on Shipley Avenue in Muncie where she attended Blaine Elementary School. They later moved to Eaton, Indiana. Although she was never adopted, Evelyn took the name of her stepfather Lee Anglin, and attended school as Evelyn Anglin.
Evelyn’s first paid job was picking strawberries around the age of 9, getting 10 cents a box for picking them. She also mowed a lawn at Mrs. Lamb’s house for $3.00. She said it was a big yard on the corner and it had a lily pond in the front. She said it was a big deal when she would get paid that much money. Another one of her early jobs was taking potato bugs off of plants and putting them into a jar to collect them for disposal.
Evelyn said that the first television set she ever saw was a Traveler at Gables Grocery in Eaton, Indiana. She saw the Arthur Godfrey show and found it so exciting to be able to see all of the people she had listened to on the radio for so long.
Evelyn was graduated from Eaton High School in 1953 as Valedictorian of her class after having served as Editor of the school newspaper. She was a very good artist and produced many of the drawings used in the school paper, the Lens, currently available for viewing at Bracken Library at Ball State.
One time, she was performing in a mystery play on stage when she was supposed to have passed out. Fellow student, Jack Alexander, had to pick her up and carry her across the stage. However, when Jack picked her up, he didn’t grab the bottom of her skirt, so it fell down. So “unconscious Evelyn” had to reach down and hold up her skirt resulting in a good laugh from the audience. When she was a freshman, she was on a debate team and one of her first debates was about coloring margarine. When they first came out with margarine, it was white, and they would provide packets of yellow coloring so it would look more like butter. Mom was given the part in the debate to be in favor of not coloring the margarine.
In the early 1950’s, Evelyn worked at Stillman’s Department Store in Muncie. In 1954, she started work at Mutual Home Savings & Loan in Muncie. She was a teller and often told stories of things she saw. One story was about an old man who, as a joke, would bring in savings books filled with dimes to deposit into his savings account and one of the dime slots was always filled with a button instead of a dime. Another time, she described the story of the fruit delivery man who had taken a payment from a client who didn’t have any checks but paid him by drawing a check and signing it on the side of a watermelon.
On September 25, 1955, she married Robert Lee Vandevender, a Security Guard in the Plant Protection Unit at Ball Brothers Canning Factory, who in 1958 became a police officer with the Muncie Police Department. Initially, they rented an upstairs apartment in Muncie on South Mulberry Street but they decided they needed a house to raise a family and purchased a home on Ebright Street.
In 1966, she took a job as the secretary of Madison Street Methodist Church working for Rev. Sharp while her son Robert II attended Garfield Elementary School.
In 1969, Evelyn decided to move with her two children to Madeira Beach, Florida to be with her parents, Thelma and Lee. While in Florida, she worked as a bookkeeper at the Madeira Beach Bank. The family remained in Florida for four years until returning to Indiana in 1974.
After her return to the Muncie area, Evelyn worked in the Delaware County Assessor’s Office. Following her son Robert’s departure for the U.S. Navy in 1977, she and her daughter Vicki returned to Madeira Beach, Florida where she started work, first at a realty company and later at Seminole Bank from where she retired. The family later moved to Longwood, Florida.
Evelyn was a wonderful woman and mother. She was a God-fearing woman who never drank, smoked, or said a bad word. Until she passed, she still corrected the “English” of her children should they say something incorrectly. She watched a lot of television and had many favorite actors. Conversations about shows and movies were a common occurrence. Her only real vice was the occasional betting on horses during the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes. Evelyn had excellent handwriting, bad eyesight, and was pretty much a homebody who didn’t like to go to many places. She didn’t like spicy foods.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her mother Thelma, her stepfather Lee, and her father Arthur. Evelyn is survived by her sister, Mary Matthews Smith of Crossville, Tennessee, her two children, Robert Vandevender II (Nancy Purington) of Stuart, Florida, and Victoria Sander (Scott), Scott and Victoria’s children Ashley Sander and Autumn Sander from Lake Mary, Florida, Robert II’s children, Holly Wiggins (Kevin) from Gaston, Indiana, Robert L. Vandevender III from Gainesville, Florida, and Bryan M. Vandevender (Rachel Loveless) from Muncie, Indiana and great-grandchildren Kaityln Privett, Jonathon Wiggins (Alaina), Gabriel Wiggins, Rogue Wiggins, Carlos Vandevender, Sydney Vandevender, Cameron Vandevender, Bryleigh Vandevender, Bryce Vandevender, Araya Vandevender and step-great grandchildren Tyler Loveless and Anthony Munoz.
Funeral Services will be held at Meeks Mortuary in Muncie on May 20th followed by interment at Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Charles John Austin - November 28, 1934 - May 07, 2024

Departed: 05/07/2024 (Muncie)
Obituary Preview: MUNCIE - Charles John Austin died May 7, 2024 at Westminster Village (Muncie, IN) after an extended illness. Educator, author, husband, father, colleague, friend—Chuck Austin touched the lives of many throughout his 89 years, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, dedication, and service. He was successful in each of his endeavors, but was above all a man of character.
Born November 28, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Charles D. and Catherine Austin, Chuck attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and Purcell High School, then earning his bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) from Xavier University (Ohio), his master’s in health administration from the University of Colorado, and his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati, setting off a professional career that would span four decades and would include military and government service, university teaching, and university administration.
Professionally, Chuck Austin served in numerous academic leadership positions, including Dean of Graduate Studies (Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas), Vice-President for Academic Affairs (Georgia Southern University), and President of East Texas State University (now Texas A&M-Commerce). He also served on the health administration faculties of the University of Colorado, Xavier University (OH), Trinity University (TX), the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the Medical University of South Carolina. Before his academic career he served as Chief of the Information Systems Division of the National Library of Medicine and systems analyst for Proctor and Gamble Co. At the National Library of Medicine, he served as contract officer for the development of MEDLARS, the world’s largest medical literature information retrieval system. Its successor, MEDLINE, is an online information system used today by healthcare workers throughout the world.
During his academic career, Chuck served as Chairman of the Board of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, Chairman of the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration, Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Health Administration Education, and Chairman of the Higher Education Committee of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is the author or co-author of five books and numerous articles, including the textbook, Information Systems for Healthcare Management which was published in six editions over a 25-year period. In 2003, Texas A&M University-Commerce dedicated the Charles J. Austin Industrial Engineering and Technology Building in recognition of Chuck Austin’s “inspired leadership, vast knowledge, and lifetime commitment to public service.”
Yet, these accomplishments did not occur in a vacuum, but all while helping raise a large extended family. He met Carroll Nurre, “the love of his life,” in grade school. They began to date in his junior year of high school and were married on June 4, 1955. Within eight years they were raising five children, even as the family spent a year at Fort Meade, Maryland as a result of President John Kennedy’s call up of 148,000 National Guardsmen and reservists during the Berlin Crisis. As he worked his way through graduate school, Chuck came to call his children the “peanut gallery” as he implored them to allow him to study in peace. That “peanut gallery” grew to include educators, lawyers, a computer specialist, an accountant—all parents as well in their own right: Lynn (Paul) of Muncie (IN), Chuck/Charles, Jr. (Debbie) of Dallas (TX), Chris (Wanyong) of Brooklyn (NY), Andy (Cindy) of Austin (TX), and Carroll Jane (Chip) of Warner Robbins (GA). In May 2008, Chuck and Carroll moved to Muncie (IN), as she battled end stage asthma. Carroll died in 2011 with Chuck at her side.
In 2012, Chuck met, and in 2013, married Lynn Vollmer, a retired CPA who previously was a professional musician. She continues performing in numerous choirs and ensembles today, sharing with Chuck a joint love of both classical music and jazz.
Though a dedicated academic and family man, Chuck Austin pursued a number of hobbies in his spare time and in his retirement: He was a talented photographer, as was his father; a serious baseball fan (of the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox) and throughout his life an avid golfer and tennis player, the latter until well into his 80’s.
Because he lived in numerous cities over his lifetime—Cincinnati, Washington, D.C., Denver, San Antonio, Commerce (TX), Statesboro (GA), Stockton Springs (ME), Birmingham, Hilton Head, and Muncie (IN), he leaves behind an extensive network of friends who came as well to admire his commitment, dedication, and character. Chuck Austin is preceded in death by his parents, sister Joyce, and wife Carroll. He is survived by his wife Lynn, five children, 11 grandchildren (Claire, Jennie, Trey/Charles John III, Katie, Emily, Charlotte, Erin, Eric, Benjamin, Laura, Margaret), and seven great grandchildren (Emma, Amelia, Simon, Andrew, Erin, CJ/Charles John IV, Ellie). To them all, he was and remains simply “Granddaddy.”
His remains will be interred at a later date at Sea View Cemetery in Rockland, Maine. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held in Muncie, Indiana at a date to be announced.
The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be sent to the family at www.meeksmortuary.com.
