Leila Collins - October 08, 1938 - October 27, 2021

Departed: 10/27/2021 (Abilene)
Obituary Preview: Leila Collins, 83, the beautiful matriarch of our family, passed away in Abilene on October 27, 2021, into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Leila was born in Selma, AL on October 8, 1938, and was raised on her grandparent’s dairy farm, outside of Greensboro, AL where she had many fond memories with her family and Compton cousins. She moved to Baird, TX her junior year and graduated valedictorian of Baird High School in 1957.
Leila attended Hardin Simmons University and the Mary Meeks School of Nursing, where she graduated top of her class and received a diploma as a Registered Nurse. While in nursing school, it was at Hendricks Medical Center where she met her beloved husband Dave, who ran the laboratory at night. They used to go on dates at the Town & Country and Mrs. Doyle’s Cafes and enjoy Jeff Davis pie and coffee. Dave and Leila were married on June 14, 1959.
After nursing school, she then went to work for Hendricks Medical Center where she helped establish the first ICU in Abilene. She taught at the LVN program – in fact, she taught her own mother. Leila then became the second Director of Nursing at the new West Texas Medical Center in Abilene. After her husband, Dave, became administrator of the hospital, Leila went to work for doctors Roy Willingham and David Halbert. A year later, she went to work for Abilene ISD as a school nurse where she spent the rest of her career. She loved working with all of the teachers and students at Jefferson Junior High and Crockett Elementary along with several other elementary schools. After retirement, she continued to keep up with continuing education to maintain her RN status.
Leila is survived by her husband, David Martin Collins, and two children: Kari McCoy & husband Aaron of Dallas, and David Collins Jr. & wife Sissy of Cisco. She had five beautiful grandchildren: Rustin & Garett Collins, both of Weatherford; Madeline McAlister, of San Antonio; Lily & Claire McCoy, both of Dallas. She is also survived by her sister, Stella Griggs Dunlap of Abilene.
Leila was preceded in death by her parents Sara and William Berry (Dub) Griggs and her brother-in-law, Billy Boyd Dunlap.
Anyone that has ever known Leila would tell you that she exemplified kindness and joy. She wanted to know everything about you and loved to tell stories from her remarkable childhood. She loved her Compton cousins and her annual trip to Alabama was always the highlight of her year. She stayed active in her church and loved gospel music. She, Dave, Stella, and Bill traveled across Texas, several times a year, to see the Gaither’s and other gospel bands. Of all of these loves, none of them could match the love she had for her grandchildren as their precious Mimi. She spoiled them rotten. When her granddaughter, Claire, was born with Cerebral Palsy, Leila spent the better part of a year in Houston helping her daughter. She was selfless in every way and such an amazing comforter.
We will miss our sweet wife, mom, Mimi, Compton cousin and dear friend, but we are at peace because we know, beyond a shadow of doubt, that we will see her again in heaven. We have this blessed assurance because Leila loved the Lord with all her might and gave her heart to Jesus many years ago.
Memorials may be sent to Wylie United Methodist Church, 3430 Antilley Road, Abilene TX 79606 or https://pushpay.com/g/wyliemethodist (in memory of Leila Collins). Visitation will be at Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd, on Friday, November 5th, from 5-7pm. The service will be Saturday, November 6th, from 10-12pm at Wylie United Methodist Church.

William 'Bill' Merkel - December 06, 1934 - October 25, 2021

Departed: 10/25/2021 (Abilene)
Obituary Preview: Because of his faith and hope in our Lord, William (Bill) Merkel, born December 6, 1934 was welcomed to his heavenly home on October 25, 2021. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 31 from 4-6 pm at Hamil Family Funeral Home. Services will be held at Southern Hills Church of Christ, Monday, November 1 at 2:00 pm with Steve Ridgell, Robert Oglesby, and Mark Hanner officiating. A private burial will be held Thursday, November 4. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road
Bill was born in Newark, New Jersey to Herman and Adeline Merkel. At the age of one, the family moved to Irvington, New Jersey where he grew up “hanging out with the guys on the block” playing stoopball, kick-the-can, and roller skating in the streets. He attended neighborhood schools and graduated high school in 1953. During a short stint in the National Guard, he met “two great pals.” Bill and his pals enjoyed buying clunkers to “transform”; one, they took the top off with a can opener.
Beginning at the age of nine, Bill had a job, always wanting to work. It was in 1955, he walked by a recruiting office, walked in, and joined the U.S. Air Force. His Boy Scout training and time in the National Guard helped him during his training and six weeks at jet mechanic school to study the ins and outs of the B47. In December, Bill drove to Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene. The base was brand new and still mostly under construction. He found the dirt road that was the entrance and went up to a little old wood shack to ask where to go. It wasn’t hard to find the place, as there were only about three buildings. He was assigned to the 490th bomb squadron. Since the planes had not yet arrived, he helped build the runway.
As Bill and his buddies in the squadron became familiar with Abilene, they snacked at places such as the Dixie Pig and Casey’s Drive-in. It was at Casey’s; Bill started a conversation with the Abilene Christian College girl in the car next to him. Upon introducing himself as Bill Merkel, her response was “sure you are” thinking he was giving her a fake name by using the town down the road. He had to show her his driver’s license. He married this ACC girl, Hymonda Moran in August of 1957, recently celebrating their 64th anniversary.
After 4 years of service to his country and a TDY to Guam, Bill was discharged. He had decided not to re-up because in April of 1959, they were blessed with their first child, Trina Lou and he wanted to be able to stay put in a location (he actually just loved Texas). Upon his discharge, Bill joined his bride as a student at ACC. While working at CEI bookstore and pinching pennies, Bill earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1964 and later earned a Master of Science in Education in 1968. During college he and Hymonda welcomed their second child, Traci Lyn in 1961.
Bill began his teaching career with Abilene ISD at Travis Elementary teaching sixth grade and coaching, later being assigned to Reagan Elementary. This was just the beginning of an active career as an educator. During his career, Bill developed a science curriculum, and joined the newly established Region XIV Education Service Center in 1970 where he developed the migrant education program, the science and drug education program, and became the first Director of Technology. Throughout his career he was always collaborating to develop more efficient programs. One in which he was extremely proud of was a book he wrote, Judicial Evaluation Model or JEM for short. It is in the Library of Congress.
Bill and Hymonda were founding members of Southern Hills Church of Christ which was originally located at 12th and Chestnut. There, he served as a deacon of education and worked with the growing group of youth. He later served as an elder, providing wisdom and guidance to many. He loved studying God’s Word and writing poetry. Bill loved camping trips every summer with his family until “the girls” left the house. Until his death, he spent part of his day working outside on his land. Bill, known as Dad, Grandad, Pop, and husband, held a part of our hearts and we feel that missing piece. His wise advice and over-the-top organization will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mattie Moran; son-in-law, Kelly Ostlien; and parents, Herman and Adeline Merkel.
Bill is survived by his wife Hymonda (Moran) of 64 years; daughters Trina Ostlien and husband Tony Yandell, and Traci and husband Tim Yandell; grandchildren, Makaley and Kauy Ostlien; sister-in-law, Fonda (Moran) Winter; niece, Brandi Mixon and husband Frank; and many in his Christian family.
Pallbearers will be Kauy Ostlien, Scott Senter, John Thacker, Rick Doud of South Dakota, Phillip Holland, Jordan Phillips, Keith Sanders, and Scott South. Honorary Pallbearers are the Southern Hills elders, and their wives, that served with Bill.

Paula Charlene Berry - November 14, 1942 - October 19, 2021

Departed: 10/19/2021 (Abilene)
Obituary Preview: Paula Charlene Rowlett Berry passed from this life into her eternal one on October 19, 2021 surrounded by her husband and her two children. As one friend said, “She was a perfect wife, mother, teacher, and friend…She loved God first, and she loved all of us with every fiber of her being.”
Paula was born the 3rd of 4 children to Charles and Bonnie Rowlett on November 14, 1942 in Anadarko, Oklahoma. After moving to Fort Worth, she graduated from Birdville High School. She chose to continue her education at Howard Payne University, pursuing a degree in education where she would begin a career as a beloved 2nd grade teacher.
During her college days, she met one of the basketball players for Howard Payne named Russell Berry and they fell in love and were married for over 58 years.
She was a loving mom and Gigi, a faithful friend, but perhaps Paula’s greatest attribute was her role as a supportive wife. After graduation from Howard Payne, Russell became a basketball coach and Paula became a teacher. They spent their early careers in several small cities where her husband was the high school basketball coach and she taught school before moving back to Brownwood. Paula moved to Abilene in 1970 when her husband became one of the basketball coaches at Hardin-Simmons, and she began a career with the Abilene Independent School District. She taught for 37 years and became the favorite teacher for many former students. It was a great source of joy for her to hear, “Mrs. Berry, you were my favorite teacher.”
She and her husband were faithful members of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church and faithfully led several Sunday school classes, including the high school seniors, and most recently the Timothy class.
Paula avoided the spotlight, allowing her husband and children to shine. Yet it was her quiet, selfless encouragement that supported any and every success that happened in her family. She loved her annual weekends with her college girlfriends, “The Magnificent 7,” gatherings and laughing with “The Gang” and playing bridge. And she loved traveling the world with her husband, who she still held hands with wherever she walked. She retired from education, but continued a life of service caring for her grandchildren, and sharing one of her greatest giftings, her cooking! A Paula Berry meal was known to be an experience and her prized culinary treat was her famous chocolate-chip cookies!
She is survived by her husband Russell Berry of Abilene, TX; her son Jeff; her daughter Kristin and husband Tony Stevens, and her most prized blessings – her 5 grandchildren: Berry and Charleigh Stevens, Parker and Elliston Berry, and Jake Heaps. She is also survived by her sister, Jody Buckman, sister Sharon Driggers and husband Ed, sister-in-law Kay Berry and numerous nieces and nephews. And countless friends who she considered family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles & Bonnie Rowlett, and her brother, Roy Rowlett.
