John Foster Dunwoody - May 05, 1940 - August 02, 2019

Departed: 08/02/2019 (Newtown Square)
Obituary Preview: “Family is not an important thing; it is everything.” -Michael J. Fox
John Foster Dunwoody, age 79, passed away at his home in Springfield, PA on August 2, 2019 in the loving embrace of his wife, Mary Ann Dunwoody ( Breen-Cahalan).
John was a loving, generous and community-oriented man who put his family above all else. He was also known for his infectious sense of humor and ability to tell a great story.
John was fortunate to have two great loves in his life: Donna K. Dunwoody (nee Ehrhardt) and Mary Dunwoody. With Donna, John shared nearly 40 years of marriage and three children: John Patrick Dunwoody, Michael Barry Dunwoody, and Mary Kathleen “Kate” Patarcity (nee Dunwoody). John and Donna ran a bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ for more than a decade. Their adventures were many, and were filled with love, humor and a few Manhattans. Donna passed away in 2002.
With Mary, John found love again, and together they enjoyed their shared grandchildren. John’s son John Patrick and his wife Susan brought his first grandsons, Steven and Justin Dunwoody. Steven married Aga and had the first great-grandchild, Jacob. John’s daughter Kate and her husband Jason Patarcity welcomed Shane to their lives. Mary’s son Timothy and wife Kathy brought Tyler and Stella Cahalan, while Mary’s daughter Meghan and husband Jim Ascuitto brought Jimmy and Cassie.
Mary’s strength and tenderness carried John through his dual battles with lymphoma and Parkinson’s Disease. Like a steel magnolia, Mary was John’s rock.
John’s love of family began with his birth on May 5, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY. He was the second of what would become five brothers: Gerard, William, Philip, and Kevin. The five brothers together fostered what would become known as Clan Dunwoody, a nod to their Irish heritage, and include 14 nieces and nephews, growing still in extended nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to John’s Services which will be held on Saturday, August 10th , with Visitation from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 136 Saxer Avenue., Springfield, PA 19064. Erika Bierschwale - June 06, 1929 - June 15, 2019

Departed: 06/15/2019 (Newtown Square)
Obituary Preview: On the morning of June 15, 2019 Erika Bierschwale of Newtown Square PA passed away at the age of 90.
Erika was born in the Dellbrück section of Köln (Cologne) Germany to Maximilian and Maria Hermann. Along with her family, Erika endured the hardships of growing up in a city ravaged by World War II. She was an excellent student and upon graduation began a career in banking, a field that rewarded her great attention to detail. Seeking adventure in what was meant to be an extended visit, Erika travelled to New York to visit her cousins Lilo and Teddy Tobar, who fled Köln earlier amid the impending Holocaust. Erika quickly fell in love with New York and decided to stay. She found both work and her future husband Manfred while employed at Lufthansa Airlines. Erika and Manfred were married in Hermannsburg, Germany in 1960, and began their married life in Queens, NY. They later moved to Glen Head, NY to raise a family in the bucolic suburbs of Long Island’s North Shore.
Erika continued to enjoy working closer to home, first at Menrad Optical and later at National Security Systems. She and her family were joined by her mother Maria for 13 years in Glen Head. Keeping up German traditions was important to Erika, and she and the family travelled frequently to visit relatives and friends in Germany. Köln remained in her heart her entire life, and Erika specifically enjoyed the festivities around the Kölner Karneval. As parents, Erika and Manfred shared their wanderlust with their children and travelled extensively throughout the world together, reaching every continent short of Antarctica. They moved to Newtown Square, PA in 2004, near their children’s families, to be attentive and loving grandparents. Devotion to family was paramount to Erika, and she made this abundantly clear to those around her.
An avid and accomplished knitter, Erika enjoyed creating wearable art for her family. She continued knitting even as her macular degeneration limited her eyesight, and in recent months completed an outfit for a family member’s newborn. With her knitting circle, she produced many blue and pink knit caps for the local hospital’s maternity ward.
A lover of animals, Erika had a particular appreciation for dogs. She recollected often about the favorite dog of her youth, a wire-haired dachshund named Anke and about the good-natured cocker spaniel named Buffy who was the beloved pet she shared with her own children. Her respect for animals extended to concerns about the welfare of wildlife in Africa, and Erika enthusiastically supported the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Erika is survived by her husband Manfred Bierschwale, daughter Claudia Muller (Mark), son Ralph Bierschwale (Debby), and grandchildren Talia Bierschwale, Max Muller, Derek Bierschwale, and Stefan Muller, as well as a wide circle of loving friends and family in Pennsylvania, New York, and Germany.
There will be a memorial service in Erika’s memory on August 17, 2019. 11 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 415 E. Athens Avenue, Ardmore PA 19003.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate condolences, share memories, and provide closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, personality, and accomplishments.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details and charitable donation information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made to an online obituary. However, changes to print publications may be more difficult or expensive to implement.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print publications may take several days or weeks.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the death, you can opt for a private or family-only obituary. This might be shared through email or social media instead of public platforms.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include details about charitable organizations or causes that were important to their loved one. This can help continue their legacy and inspire others to give back.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! A well-placed anecdote or witty remark can help capture the personality of the deceased and bring smiles to readers' faces.

What if I want to write an unconventional obituary?

If you're looking to create a more creative or non-traditional tribute, consider working with a professional writer or using online platforms that allow for more flexibility in terms of tone and style.
