Dr. J. Stanley Yake - September 10, 1935 - January 23, 2024

Departed: 01/23/2024 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: Dr. J. Stanley Yake September 10, 1935 – January 23, 2024
Stan Yake was a philosopher and artist, a generous friend, and an optimist forever grateful for his good fortune. He died as he lived – rooting for his beloved Boston Celtics, surrounded by family, with a knowing twinkle in his eye.
Born to a large Mennonite family in western Pennsylvania, Stan’s early years were filled with music, basketball, and a long list of chores. He attended Eastern Mennonite High School as a boarding student, then Goshen College. He graduated with a BA in History and a strong ping pong game. After a stint at Columbia University, Stan fled the cultural comforts of New York City for the snows of SUNY Buffalo. There, he completed both an MA and PhD in Philosophy; his dissertation was written at iconic Big Boy Hamburgers…on the thruway.
A lifelong believer in public education, Stan was instrumental in turning the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay into a four-year campus, where he also taught philosophy. It was during these years that he met his wife Barbara, first dabbled in ceramics, and learned to love the Green Bay Packers.
Stan and Barbara relocated to Albany, New York in 1977. Stan’s previous experience in health care planning led to a job at what became the State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities. However, it was the intellectual life of a professor that brought him the greatest joy: first at Sage Junior College and eventually at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Leading with authenticity, an open mind, and a big laugh, Stan connected as a positive role model and mentor for young people. He faxed hand-written letters of recommendation and was often the first to expose them to classical music. For many, he became their dinner partner of choice.
Stan’s love of ceramics began in Green Bay, but it crystalized in the evenings at Skidmore College. With newly dear friends, he threw pieces on the wheel, intentionally ran over hand-built pieces for effect with his trusty Peugeot, and fired them in the “Stanley” kiln. All the while, he took (so many) photos and wrote essays, books, and poetry (e.g. the piece below). Like his ceramics hero Paul Soldner, Stan embodied the spirit of raku: he welcomed the element of surprise, followed no absolute plan, and embraced the outcome.
A constant quest for the best of the best in entertainment and adventure took him around the world. He took military flights to the Soviet Union. He hacked at golf courses in Northern Ireland. He cheered at too many World Cup matches to count. Closer to home, his neon blue Audi ensured a timely arrival to the Metropolitan Opera one night and to the Boston Garden the next. There is little he loved more than sharing these experiences with those in his life – family and friends, students, or the recipients of extra tickets he gave out at the entrance (“the best in the house”). Everyone was deserving; everyone was a potential new best friend.
While his rolodex runneth over, it was almost always in service of others and of the greater good. From Ted Kennedy to Barack Obama, Stan’s commitment to the Democratic Party was unwavering. BUT, he also believed in supporting more local efforts: Capital Repertory Theatre, WMHT, and the New York Civil Liberties Union, among others. He was always willing to open the door, answer the phone, or write the check. To the very end, he carried cash in his pocket to give away. Stan Yake believed that everyone should be as lucky as he was.
He is survived by wife Barbara; sons Andrew and Ethan; daughter Molly (Yake) Mackenzie and her husband Josh and their children Dakota, Maya, and Grayson; brother Byron and his wife Myrtis.
He is predeceased by his parents, CF and Martha (Eby) Yake, and his siblings Marnetta (Yake) Brilhart, Ethel (Yake) Metzler, Lois (Yake) Kenagy, and Clayton Paul.
Family and friends may join the memorial service on Friday, February 16th at 4PM either in person at Capital Repertory Theatre (251 N Pearl Street Albany, NY 12207) or online at https://bit.ly/stanyake. Visitation will immediately follow.

Harry transitioned from this earth peacefully on the morning of December 2nd at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany, New York.
Harry lived a full and vibrant life. Always the life of the party, Harry is remembered for his jokes, laughter, fashion, and shoes. He had the most creative, stylish, and infamous shoe wear. He entered a room with style and grace.
He shared the last 44 years of his life with his loving husband, James (Pokey) Hailey. Harry is predeceased by three siblings, his mother, Helen Frost, and his father, Judge Frost. Harry graduated from Hill House High School in New Haven, Connecticut and achieved a bachelor’s degree from SCSU College. Harry held several different positions in retail and finance before making a career in the human service and public health fields.
Harry's career was dedicated to serving people at risk for, and living with, HIV. He worked at Whitney M. Young Health (WMY) for twenty-five years, providing leadership and oversight in the once named CHEER Department. He greeted and welcomed every individual he encountered. Upon his retirement from WMY in 2011 Harry had impacted and benefited the lives of thousands of people. Throughout his years of service Harry was recognized and given many awards. A testament to his dedication and commitment to those he served and as a community leader.
Harry was the founder of GMOCA. Established in 1994, the Gay Men of Color Alliance created a safe space for individuals to gather, share and learn from each other. Education, outreach, support, and love were the hallmarks of this long lasting and far-reaching weekly gathering.
He was unconventional in all ways possible. His approach to life was direct and honest. His compassion was deep, and his laughter was loud, as could be the curse words he delivered without hesitation when prompted. He was real. He was genuine. He was fierce.
Please keep Harry's family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time. At his request there will be no service. His family asks that you light a candle in his name and hold his memory as the bright light he was to so many.

Grayce Burian - December 17, 1926 - November 16, 2023

Departed: 11/16/2023 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: Grayce Susan Burian
After a life dedicated to art, education and foremost to her husband, Jarka, Grayce Susan Burian died November 16 after a short illness. She was 97.
Grayce was born into an Italian-American family in Boston, where she studied acting and performed in theatre productions. After graduating high school, she moved to New York City and began a theatre career. She met Jarka when they were cast in a play together. They were married at The Little Church Around the Corner.
Though briefly successful in New York, the Burians’ professional acting careers were sidetracked by both World War II and the Korean War, in which Jarka served in the Army. When he returned, he pursued an academic theatre career and eventually became a world-renowned scholar in Czech theatre. During this time Grayce was his strongest supporter and advisor.
Grayce then began her own career in theatre education. She eventually received BA and MA degrees from SUNY Albany, where Jarka was a professor of theatre history for over 40 years. Although they had no children of their own, their overlapping teaching careers provided them both the chance to nurture college students. Grayce taught at Hudson Valley Community College and The College of St. Rose. She established the theatre program at Schenectady Community College, where she taught and directed for over 20 years.
The Burians endowed a lecture series in theatre established at the NYS Writers Institute, which has brought many well-known theatre artists to SUNY Albany.
Teaching and acting were not Grayce’s only achievements. She studied sculpture in her twenties and over the years created fine, highly regarded wood sculptures. She made her own clothing and jewelry. Well into her later years, she maintained a dance floor in her home to practice another of her great loves, flamenco dancing. Jarka and Grayce also travelled extensively, usually spending a year at a time in Europe, especially the Czech Republic. In her eighties Grayce wrote a memoir of her years with Jarka, including an historic time working in occupied Czechoslovakia. From Jerry to Jarka: A Breezy Memoir of a Long, Peripatetic Marriage was published by Ohio State University Press in 2013.
Grayce spent many years after Jarka died working tirelessly to preserve his legacy. She now leaves a legacy of her own, one of artist, writer, teacher and friend. Grayce is survived by her sisters Teresa and Diane, many nieces and nephews and their children, and by her many dear friends

This was because he lived by the ancient motto of Socrates: “Nous Igis En Somati Igi” (A Sound Body Makes for a Sound Mind).
Emmanuel graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Biology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1996 as well as earning his MD degree from the Pre-Professional Scholars Program in Medical Education and Musculoskeletal Research from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2002.
He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, followed by his Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery fellowship at the University of Chicago. He began his clinical practice of Orthopedic Surgery at the Holzer Clinic Health System in Gallipolis, Ohio, where over the years he received numerous accolades both from patients and colleagues including Physician of the Month and countless patient-based awards for exemplary surgical patient-care. A common theme reiterated from his patients was how much time he would spend with them and their families and how much he genuinely cared for them. He was frequently described as the most down-to-earth doctor anyone had ever met. Notwithstanding the rigorous demands of his career, Manny always found time for friends, family, and his passion for physical fitness. All of his close friends would describe him as the most giving person, not just of his time but of his dedication and energy as well. The generosity of his heart was unparalleled. Moreover, he was able to cultivate a love for guitar-playing, a hobby that he was able to refine in recent years resulting in several “open mic” on-stage moments of fun. Noting Manny’s two favorite celebrities, one of his on-stage “groupies” quipped, “it’s like Arnold Schwarzenegger playing guitar like Angus Young.”
In 2023, Emmanuel was elected Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery of the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) headquartered in Tampa, Florida. He was instrumental in developing board certification and re-certification evaluations and was passionate about promoting national options to physician-led board certification.
Recently, as part of his duties with the ABPS, Manny would enjoy spending time in the Tampa area making new friends and acquaintances while continuing to live by his favorite Ancient Greek motto: “Nous Igis En Somati Igi”.
He tragically, suddenly, and unexpectedly passed away while travelling out of state the evening of November 2, 2023.
He leaves behind his immediate family members, mother Zoi, brother Tasso, and several extended family members and loving cousins. He also leaves behind countless friends, both old and new, who are too numerous to mention, but he will forever live in our hearts. Memory eternal Manoli! Love, Mother Zoi, Brother Anastasios, and Father Konstantin (+2016) Konstantakos
Funeral Services were held November 16, 2023, 11:00 AM at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, Albany, NY.

Hercules "Papou" John Diveris - April 17, 1929 - July 17, 2023

Departed: 07/17/2023 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: Albany-
Hercules John Diveris, affectionately known as “Herk”, was born on April 17, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the third of three sons born to Irene and John Kosmas Diveris. At a young age, his family relocated to Elmira, NY, where they established Aster's Candy Store on East Water St, a beloved destination for candy enthusiasts of all ages. As a family business, Herk actively participated in the production and service of sweets. He would often fondly reminisce about his early years, recounting stories of serving sodas and sweet treats to customers.
During the Korean War, Herk volunteered to serve his country and was deployed to Japan as an air traffic controlman. Later, through the GI Bill, he obtained his bachelor's degree from Purdue University. Herk pursued a career in education, and taught various levels of high school math across several school districts. Eventually, he accepted a position with the New York State Department of Corrections, where he served as the Superintendent of Math Educational Programs for the state prison system until his retirement.
Herk had a passion for sports and enjoyed both playing and spectating golf and bowling. He continued participating in a bowling league well into his 80’s. As an ardent fan of golf and baseball, he closely followed his favorite golfers and teams, including the Red Sox, White Sox, and Chicago Bears. Being a "numbers guy," he delighted in quoting sports statistics.
Herk married Constance and had two sons, John and George Diveris; he also adopted Constance’s children from her first marriage, Elizabeth Lix, Michael Diveris, Christopher Diveris. Subsequently, he married Joan Daisy Lechliter-Diveris (Deceased 2009) and became a stepfather to her six children: Gwendolyn (Richard) Maturo-Grasso, Billy (Kathryn) Gooshaw, James (Kimberlee) Gooshaw, Brenda (Stephen) Gooshaw Samson, Cynthia (Tal) Gooshaw Shafer, and Suzanne (Charlie) Runyan. Herk also grew to love Joan's brother Charlie Lechliter as if he was his own brother. In fact, Hercules and Charlie served as "Best Man" in each other’s weddings in 1984 and 1985.
Known as "Papou" to his numerous grandchildren, Herk shared a special bond with: Eric Gooshaw (Aurora Crawford), Amalia Flores (Terry Davies), Lawrence Maturo Jr. (deceased 2018), Samantha (James) McDarby, Angela Maturo (Corey Bouissey), Austin Gooshaw, Madison Gooshaw (Matt Wilsey), Savannah Gooshaw (Jared Ellis), Braidee-Ann Gooshaw, Nathan Gooshaw, Jonathan Samson (Nicole Gousy), Katie Samson (Kayleigh Thibodeau-Grivois), Rebecca Samson, Thomas Samson, Alysia Runyan, Makenzy Runyan, Mitchum Gooshaw, Bryce Gooshaw, Max Grasso. Additionally, his great-grandchildren lovingly referred to him as Pro-Papou: Georgia Gooshaw, Giovanni Orduña, Lorelei Gooshaw, Scarlett Gooshaw, Arthur Plog, Yelena Crawford, Tillian Gooshaw, Jameson McDarby, Julia McDarby, and Benjamin McDarby. When Herk's brother Michael passed away at an early age, he lovingly stepped in as an adopted “Papou” to his brother’s grandchildren; to his brother Gus’s grandchildren, he was a beloved great uncle.
In his journal documenting his trip to Greece, Herk expressed his long-standing desire to visit his ancestral homeland, a dream he had nurtured for over three decades. He embarked on a two-week journey to Greece with his beloved wife, Joan, to commemorate their 10th wedding anniversary. During their time there, they visited ancient ruins and had the opportunity to meet their previously unknown first cousins. The visit held immense significance for Herk, as both his parents had immigrated to the United States. He was an active member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, and was an active member of the Order of AHEPA, an organization dedicated to promoting the ancient Hellenic ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence through community service. He assisted with various church activities, including organizing BINGO nights and fundraising events. Herk took pleasure in conversing in Greek and loved to throw in a few Japanese phrases he had acquired during his time in the Air Force stationed in Japan.
Over the course of his remarkable 94 years, Papou touched the lives of many. May his memory be eternal.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11am at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Rd, Albany, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10am to 11am Saturday at the church. Interment will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, 303 Sand Creek Rd, Colonie, NY.
