John James Ahern, Jr. - January 16, 1966 - May 08, 2024

Departed: 05/08/2024 (Brighton)
Obituary Preview: “I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.” - John 17:4
John James Ahern, Jr. January 16, 1966 - May 8, 2024
It is with great sorrow, but also great hope and trust in the Lord's mercy, that we announce the passing of John James Ahern, Jr. He earned his eternal reward on May 8, 2024, at 6:15pm at the age of 58.
John is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 34 years, Jan (Cheesman); six treasured children, John James, III (Ashley), Mark (Marykate), Anna, Luke, Sara Jane, Mary Grace and three pre-born babies; three beloved grandchildren, Vivienne, Audrey, Finnian and two pre-born grandchildren; mother, Marilyn Rita Ahern (Stupek); siblings, Emily (John), Sara (Leon), Paul (Carmen), Karyn (Neil), Renee (Matthew); Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Kay and Harold Cheesman; brother-in-law Barry Cheesman (Julie); sister-in-law Kelly Leipold (Lance); thirteen nieces and nephews, one great-niece, six Godchildren, two Aunts, three Uncles and 18 cousins. John is preceded in death by his father, John James Ahern, Sr, three Uncles, four Aunts, and Grandparents.
John was born in Chicago, IL, to Marilyn and John “Jack” Ahern on January 16, 1966. He grew up in a faith-filled and fun-loving household. John was an active child often found studying the mechanics of a toaster or building a backyard fort and bicycle ramp out of pallet wood. He attended Mary Seat of Wisdom Parish School in Park Ridge, IL, through the eighth grade and attended Loyola Academy in Wilmette, IL, for high school. John received a biology degree from Creighton University in 1988. It was at his alma mater that he met Jan, who quickly became the love of his life. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Creighton in 1992. John and Jan were married on December 22, 1989, the coldest day in Omaha history! In their 34 years of marriage, John and Jan welcomed their six greatest blessings, their children. John was the ultimate family man, he authentically lived his God-given vocation of a husband and father everyday. He enjoyed all things family, especially when all 13 were gathered around the table, squished into one pew, or cheering each other on at sporting events. He adored his devoted and faithful wife, Jan. In his own words to his oldest granddaughter, he proudly said, “Mimi [Jan] is my favorite person, next to Jesus.”
John was an accomplished dentist, who served his patients alongside an esteemed and deeply valued team, with great skill and even greater compassion. John ended his dental career just four weeks before his passing. Dentistry was his passion, and truly a way in which he served the Lord through his talents and gifts. John was the most tender and caring dentist, oftentimes more regarded as a confidant and a friend than a skilled clinician. He served while always offering a smile from the other side of the dental chair. While not serving as a dentist, John loved traveling with his wife and family, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, playing with his grandchildren, serving as a lector at Mass, and volunteering at the soup kitchen. John was a proud parishioner at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and active in the wide-reaching Denver Catholic community.
In February of 2023, John was diagnosed with stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. One of John's first responses to the diagnosis was, "If my illness brings just one person closer to Jesus, then my mission is complete." John's cancer journey started with complete embracement of the Lord's will and radical acceptance of the suffering that was sure to come. He always had radical hope for a miracle cure. With this Christ-centered attitude, John endured a fourteen month battle that included eighteen rounds of chemotherapy, three months of a clinical trial, and three more rounds of chemo. His cancer journey eventually led to a radical acceptance of God's will: God brought many back to Himself through John's suffering and death. Mission complete. In the last months of his life, John suffered with great purpose. He truly united his pain with that of Jesus on the Cross as well as offering it up for others. He suffered silently without complaint, and with great and selfless courage. John was overcome with gratitude by the love and compassion that The Body of Christ showed him, often bringing him to his knees. We would be remiss if we did not end with John’s own continuous words, “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Cecil David Evans - April 06, 1927 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Brighton)
Obituary Preview: Cecil Evans, 1927-2024 Loving and beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, neighbor, friend and pastor
Born to Evan and Mary Evans on April 6, 1927, in Underwood, North Dakota, Cecil David Evans was the youngest of their five children – a blessing after his mother had nursed the entire family through the Spanish Flu epidemic and then lost three children in infancy.
He attended a one-room schoolhouse through 7th grade, riding horseback from the family farm.  After graduating from Turtle Lake High School in 1946 he farmed for one year before following a strong conviction to become a Church of God (CoG) pastor.
This calling led him to Pacific Bible College in Portland, Oregon (now Warner Pacific University), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 and a Bachelor of Theology in 1953.  While at Warner, he married fellow student Annette Theios, on June 14, 1951, promising that he would take her to Hawaii, which he did for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Cecil pastored in Grand Forks, North Dakota for 10 years, where daughter Christine and son Sterling were born, and then in Littleton, Colorado for nearly 7 years.  During that time, he served as the Secretary of the North Dakota and of the Colorado CoG Conferences.  He was a lifelong member of the CoG Peace Fellowship and an advocate for the preservation of the separation of church and state.  Throughout his life and ministry, Cecil pursued and paved a path of faith and justice guided by the Gospel and conviction.
After leaving the ministry, Cecil worked in sales for 22 years.  He drove for the Red Cross one day a week for 16 years and served as visitation pastor to the Sloan’s Lake CoG shut ins.  He and Annette moved to Norman, Oklahoma, in 2013 to be closer to Sterling and his family as her Parkinson’s Disease progressed.  Following her death in early 2020, Cecil moved back to Denver and shared a home with daughter Chris and son-in-law John, who had returned from living abroad.
Cecil was known for taking home movies - starting in his college days - and for joyously passing on family history.  He loved visiting national parks and impressed his kids by building his own camper trailer in the driveway of the Grand Forks parsonage.  He traveled to 17 countries, often for CoG conferences or to visit family.  He enjoyed reading, board games, Jeopardy, bowling, homemade ice cream, and calling friends and family. And only drove Fords until the day he stopped driving at 95.
Cecil passed away in Denver on April 26, 2024, shortly after celebrating his 97th birthday.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Annette, his son Sterling, his brothers Elmer (Nellie), Ernest (Tillie), Ezra (Alice), and Leroy (Dorothy) and all of his 27 first cousins.  He is survived by his daughter Chris and son-in-law John Evans-Klock, daughter-in-law Sheri Evans, grandsons Cory and Jasper (Matt) Evans-Klock, granddaughters Alex and Shelby Evans, sisters-in-law Rosemary Ottoson and Joyce Theios, brother-in-law Eugene Theios, and a loving throng of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He lived a life of devotion to the Lord and to the church.

Barbara Jean Stephens - April 29, 1933 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Brighton)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Jean Stephens stepped into heaven on April 21, 2024—just 8 days shy of her 91st birthday.  It was just like her to choose a Sunday morning as her departure date, and we are sure the Sunday service SHE attended that morning was EPIC!!
Barbara came into this world in Denver, Colorado on April 29th, 1933, as a surprise to her parents, Elbert and Julia Wilson, who had been told they couldn’t have children after Julia’s surgery years earlier.  She was destined to be a “Wilma” following the “W” pattern of her older siblings, Walter and Wanda.  Her sister, Wanda, was in Junior High School at the time and she convinced her mother to name her baby sister after her best friend, Barbara Jean.  One of Barb’s nephews teasingly called her Aunt Wilma throughout her life.
She graduated from West High School in Denver in 1952 and soon after began working for Public Service Company.  She had a full scholarship to attend Western Colorado University, but she loved her new job so much she decided to stay.  That decision turned out to be fate, because had she gone to school, she would not have been there when James R. Stephens started working at PSCO in the fall.  She told him she felt sorry for his future wife because he was gone skiing or fishing every weekend and she knew his wife would be a weekend widow.  Long story short, they were married the following year on Valentine’s Day, 1953 and continued to live happily for the next 56 years until Jim’s death in 2009.
They started married life in Denver, where they were blessed with two children—Gregg, in 1955, and Nancy, in 1957. They lived in their home in Denver until 1966 when they moved to Salida for 3 years.  Then they moved to Brighton where they lived for the next 40 years, and finally to Loveland for the next 17 years. Barbara moved to Good Samaritan Assisted Living in Ft Collins almost a year ago. Barbara was an extremely gifted homemaker and created such a warm and loving home for her family.  She took pride in every home she lived in and decorated accordingly for EVERY season and holiday!  Christmas was her favorite! She provided incredible meals, equally incredible desserts and even the family picnics were a gourmet experience.  Our family could not have been blessed with a better mom!  We spent many weekends 4-wheelin’ through the Colorado mountains exploring our beautiful state and making wonderful memories together.   She began working as an administrative secretary in the Brighton School District when her children were older.  She created another wonderful “family of friends” there.  Barb loved to entertain family and friends and was active in each community.  Her church families were always a priority and she spent many hours serving wherever she was called. She loved sending and receiving cards and oversaw the card ministry at her church for many years. Encouraging others was one of her many gifts. Other hobbies included scrapbooking, genealogy, embroidery, and knitting.  There are many little “pieces of Barb” in homes across Colorado! Barb maintained an extremely strong faith throughout her lifetime.  She loved her Lord, heart and soul!  If you needed a good and faithful prayer warrior, Barb was your go-to!
Barbara was a very loving and supportive wife. Jim and Barbara had many wonderful years of love and laughter together and she was Jim’s dedicated caretaker for the last years of his life as he deteriorated with dementia.  She had missed him every day of the almost 15 years since his passing.  Our hearts are rejoicing that they are finally together again!!  She cherished her children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family members, friends, and pets. She made lifelong friends everywhere she went, and she had an amazing ability to keep track of and nurture those connections.  She had such a positive impact on so many peoples’ lives.  Her strong faith and wisdom were a beacon of light and inspiration for many who knew her.
She is survived by her son Gregg Stephens (Dawn) of Central Point, OR daughter Nancy Trignani (Lou) of Ft Collins, CO, grandson Stephen Trignani (Heather) of Greeley, CO and granddaughter, Alyssa Tuttle (Dan) of Ft. Collins, CO.
All who were privileged to know her will remember her fondly.  She left a legacy of love and a trail of lovely memories in each heart that she touched. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 2PM at First Baptist Church, 1003 W 6th Street, Loveland Colorado.  The family respectfully requests no flowers.  Donations in memory of Barb can go to either: Banner Hospice of Northern Colorado 5628 19th Street, Suite 2 Greeley, CO 80634 Focus on the Family 8605 Explorer Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80920 *Upon family request, we kindly ask that if other any family or friends visit Barbara's page, to respectfully disregard the link to purchase flowers for a gift or tribute*
