Timothy Sears - January 17, 1952 - May 20, 2015

Departed: 05/20/2015 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Timothy Allen Sears, longtime resident of Springfield, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 20th, 2015, after a courageous battle with ALS. Born in Springfield, the only child of Francis and Gloria (née Perry) Sears, Tim grew up in the Forest Park neighborhood. His father, Francis, a Springfield Police detective, died in the line of duty in 1967. Tim forged a strong bond with his mother’s second husband, Captain James Williams, also with the Springfield Police Department, who took him to Vermont on hunting trips. After his 1970 graduation from Springfield Tech High School, he earned a BA in Business Management from American International College, where he also nurtured a great love for hockey, playing goaltender through his college years. Tim began his career over 40 years ago in commercial real estate at Northeast Savings Bank in Hartford. He continued his stellar career developing new locations for Jiffy Lube, Boston Market, and Wendy’s. His greatest professional success was his 13+ years as Senior Director with Rite Aid Corporation where he developed over 200 locations for the company. In 2008, he joined Centerplan Development Company of Middletown, CT, where he passionately served as Vice President of Retail Development until his retirement in 2014. Though his work obliged him to travel widely, he always rejoiced upon his return to “Springy.” He was proud of his hometown, where he bought a house next door to his mother and began his own family, raising a son and a daughter. Coaching hockey became one of the greatest joys of his life. He led the Holy Name Youth Hockey Stars and the Springfield Junior Pics, two teams his son played for, as well as the teams from Cathedral High School and Westfield State University. He was an unflagging competitor and was extremely pleased to coach many championship teams. An avid runner, he twice accomplished his greatest adventure, running the Grand Canyon “rim to rim.” He devoted many hours cheering on his beloved Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics. Family will remember Tim as a tireless provider and relentless protector. Friends will remember him as loyal, thoughtful and, as he would be the first to admit, astonishingly accident-prone. All will remember him for his inexhaustible spirit, uncompromising values and captivating grin. He was a man of many words and was always willing to start a conversation with whomever he met. His celebrated “gift of gab”, though sometimes exasperating to his family, caused him to forge connections far and wide. Tim always kept friends close to his heart, if not close to his home. He was not one to boast, and he was quick to award credit and praise to his colleagues. He was a man of great love. His spirit was that of a simpler time: he provided for his family; he stayed true to his morals; he upheld tradition; he kept his commitments; and he was generous to a fault. He was a man of his word, a man of his family, a man of his God. Tim is predeceased by his father, Francis (1967); his mother, Gloria (2008); and his stepfather, Captain James Williams (2007). He is survived by his former wife, Jessica Flanagan-Sears, of Springfield, and his loving partner, Carrie Hoffman, of Pitman, NJ, as well as her daughter, Caroline Hoffman. He also leaves behind his son, Ryan C. Sears, of Stockbridge, MA, and his daughter, Amanda C. Warwick, of Chicopee, MA. Amanda and her husband, Chris Warwick, have three children, the grandchildren Tim called the “loves of his life” and for whom his adoration cannot be quantified: Audrey, 9, Ashlyn, 5, and Declan, 3. Tim’s legacy is one of love, generosity, faith, and fortitude. At the end of his life, in reference to his daily battle with ALS and its’ accompanying pain, he would quote his Italian grandfather, Anthony Perry: “What are you going to do? One foot in front of the other.” A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 29, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Pitman, NJ. Calling hours will be Saturday, May 30, between 10:00 a.m. and noon, with a memorial service to follow, at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Holy Name Hockey Association at P.O. Box 661, West Springfield, MA 01090.
