Pok Hyon Schoby - June 07, 1945 - March 14, 2022

Departed: 03/14/2022 (Clarksville)
Obituary Preview: Pok Hyon Schoby passed away on March 14th, 2022, age 76. She passed peacefully in her sleep. Her parents, 2 brothers and 1 sister preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving husband of 40+ years, Steven Schoby, son, Jerry (Charlene) Turney; daughter, Brenda Turney; grandchildren: Gabrielle (Josh), Caleb, Korianne, Caden, Ava; and great grandchild Theodore.
Pok Hyon Schoby was born on June 7, 1945, in Anyang, South Korea. At a young age she had to grow up quickly. At 9 years old she was starting a fire from scratch so that she could cook dinner for the family because her mother was out working. She was working full time in a sewing factory at the age of 15 and was helping support the family. As a result, she literally has made and sewn about 90% of her clothing for most of her life. Each grand kid received 2 specially made baby blankets from Grandma to use and keep as a memory throughout their lives. She really wanted to make one for Theodore, her great grandchild, but due to her health was not able too.
She has lived in S Korea, Battle Creek, MI, Carnation, WA, Ft Campbell, KY, Mainz Germany, Wiesbaden Germany, Ft Knox, Ky, and ended up settling/retiring in Clarksville TN.
Pok loved flowers and growing a garden. Their house would blossom every spring with the hundreds of flowers, plants, bushes, and trees that she planted and tended too. It was like walking through a botanical garden. She loved fresh vegetables and picking dates, persimmons, and pears from their backyard. And of course, she would always have cucumbers, squash, and Goguma (Korean sweet potato).
Pok always thought of others first. She gave money to those struggling, cooked for those who were hungry, and visited with others who were hurting and lonely. When she made dinner, she would always serve others first and make sure that everyone had their food. Then she would grab her food and sit down. After you ate a full plate, she would insist that you eat more. Any guest who walked into their home left full, fuller, and busting at the seams because she loved to feed people.
One of her last things she said to her husband Steve and son Jerry was to “make sure everyone ate and that they take care of themselves.” Even while she laid there knowing that her time was limited, she still cared and thought of others first.
She was an amazing woman who was incredibly strong in spirit. She had many health challenges throughout her life. Despite all the difficulties, she would not sacrifice her family and family time. Every year Grandma (Pok) and Grandpa (Steve) would make sure that we went on vacation together. Every time they visited, they would bring the grandkids favorite candies and desserts (even though Jerry and Charlene would have preferred carrots and apples). She and Grandpa assisted the older kids in making sure they could attend college and that Gabi and Josh could have a nice wedding. They made sure Christmas was always overflowing with gifts and that food was always available to eat. Especially the kids favorite Korean food: Bulgogi, Korean hot chicken, Mandu soup, Korean egg rolls, and Korean BBQ ribs.
She will be missed greatly. Words cannot describe her love, generosity, and sacrifice. We love you and know that we will join you in heaven one day.
A memorial celebration will be Friday March 18th at Sykes Funeral home in Clarksville, TN. Viewing is 1-3pm and the memorial service will be at 3pm. A private family burial will be done on Monday.

Anna Doherty - Unknown - March 03, 2022

Departed: 03/03/2022 (Clarksville)
Obituary Preview: A Funeral Mass for Anna Etschmayer Doherty, age 92, of Clarksville, Tn, will be Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Chapel. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at Riverview Cemetery in Clarksville. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 9, 2022 from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM at Sykes Funeral Home and again on Thursday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at the church.
Anna, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend entered the gates of heaven on March 3rd, 2022 at her home while her son held her hand. She was born June 22, 1929 in Vienna, Austria. She was the middle sibling of five children born to Alois and Louisa Etschmayer. Anna enjoyed a fairytale childhood in the mountains spending time with family, picking blackberries, playing her accordion and frolicking with her friends. Her idyllic childhood ended abruptly on March 12th, 1938 when Hitler invaded Vienna. At the age of eleven she fled from her home while hiding her childhood treasures in a hole in an old tree. She still has shrapnel in her body from a grenade explosion. Anna remembered waiting in bread lines all day only to get to the front and hear that there was no more food left. She ended up as a servant for the Nazis at a large estate until the war ended. After the war, Anna left for Goose Bay, Labrador where she unknowingly went to work at a steakhouse that her future husband, Joseph Doherty, managed. She returned to Vienna after earning enough money to buy her mother an apartment in downtown Vienna. Meanwhile Joseph’s steakhouse was declining in popularity and he begged Anna to return and they were married on September 4th, 1965. They were living in Michigan when they adopted their son Patrick in 1968. Soon after, Joseph was called to Vietnam. Anna and Patrick moved to Vienna and stayed at her mom’s new apartment. When Joseph returned, they moved to Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their final move was to Clarksville, Tennessee in 1972 and Joseph worked at Fort Campbell. Anna was a devoted mother and after Patrick began first grade at the Clarksville Academy, she got busy. She studied and earned her citizenship. She became very active in the Immaculate Conception Church and especially with the alter society and other women’s organizations. Anna also became active in the Clarksville Academy and especially the annual Bazaar. Then she discovered her true passion, volunteering for the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen. Anna ended up managing the soup kitchen for 38 years. She loved giving back to the less fortunate and she never wanted anyone to go hungry like she did during the war. She was very honored when she received a visit from Sharon Puckett of Channel 4 News and Anna was honored as a volunteer of the year for the state of Tennessee.  Anna always enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking and especially baking. Her final passion in life was spending time with her beloved grandson, Joey Doherty. He quickly became the source of her joy and happiness. She supported him in everything he did and attended as many of his events as possible. They loved playing and laughing together. Anna Doherty will be truly and deeply missed by everyone who was fortunate to have their lives touched by her. Anna Doherty was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Joseph; her sister Hilde Stary of Vienna; her sister Hermine Etschmayer of Vienna; her brother Hans Etschmayer of Switzerland; her brother Louis Etschmayer of Innsbrook. Anna Doherty is survived by her son Patrick Doherty and her grandson Joey Doherty, both of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
