She received a Certificate of award by the NFCC-Region 6, for excellence in leadership, and outstanding support staff in 1991. She received a (Employee Recognition Award) in appreciation for service to her clients in 1992. James Franklin Anderson - February 14, 1939 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Hermantown)
Obituary Preview: James F. Anderson, 83, of Ely and Hermantown, walked on after a brief stay at Solvay Hospice in Duluth on April 17, 2022.
He was born on Valentine’s Day 1939, which also was his teenage sister’s birthday – a special bond that carried them through the years as she helped raise him while his mother and father had just begun the grand adventure of starting Echo Tail Lodge on the east arm of Burntside Lake. He was the special surprise in his family, and at 16 when his father died he was thrust too quickly into resort responsibilities that set the stage for how he would face any of life’s hardship and adversity: with a quiet resolve and amiable determination. As her “caboose”, the bond forged with his mother through happy times and hardship remained unbroken with her passing.
His early extended-family life formed who he was, and he was proud of his Ojibwe heritage as a Bois Forte Band member. Almost every story told by him served the dual purpose of entertaining and teaching, and he loved passing on his knowledge of language, events, and family lore filled with Andersons, Toutloffs, Rolandos and Bosheys.
He taught for over 35 years, the majority as a math and science teacher in Hermantown Middle School. He loved to pass on his knowledge to young and old alike and was surrounded by wonderful colleagues who made his teaching career even more enjoyable.
While this part of the journey has ended, the special memories remain. He was known for his quiet wisdom, kind laugh, his incredible work ethic, an ability to fix anything, his sense of humor, witty one-liners and wry observations, love of nature and the natural world, walleye fishing, canoe trips, his love for his family, and his genuine and gentle helpful nature. Very few birds went hungry in his presence, and summer walleye and winter trout can now rest easier with his fishing gear now stowed away. All too shortly after he retired he suffered a stroke which robbed him of deferred canoe trips and north country adventures. As he worked to regain his mobility, his grandson Sam became the light in his life and the two of them shared countless adventures across hours of stories, teaching and learning, and laughter. In typical fashion he showed as a grandparent what he was as a parent – patient, guiding, playful and loving.
He now joins his immediate family in the spirit world – his parents John and Mary Anderson, sister Norma (Johnson), and brothers John and Bill. He is survived by Dail, Jim (Nora), Chris (Joanna) and his grandson Sam, along with generations of nieces, nephews, in-laws, resort guests, fellow teachers and educators, and the many students he taught along the way. No words will adequately convey his devotion and love for Dail, who was his lifelong paddling partner and fellow outdoor adventurer, as well as his constant companion, cook, confidant, conscience, chief accountant, and ultimate caretaker. The comfort he felt in her presence at the end exhibited the strength of their 60+ years together. He could not have become who he was to all of us without her by his side.
While his retirement adventures were cut short by his stroke, in his recovery and afterward he remained a guiding force in his family as he showed that physical obstacles were no match for attitude and humor, and his wisdom and positive outlook remained intact, even as he fought an added battle with multiple myeloma in these later years. His nurses loved his infectious laugh.
He will now return home to Burntside, joining the generations before him who lived and loved the lake’s land and water – where he was raised, where he both learned and taught many life lessons, where he met Dail, and where his heart was happiest – his circle completed.

Departed: 04/10/2022 (Hermantown)
Obituary Preview: Deborah H Clasen, age 73, of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in St. Luke’s Hospital on April 10, 2022.
Deborah Helene Cimperman (Deb) was born in Virginia, Minnesota to William and Frances Jagunich Cimperman. During her upbringing in northern Minnesota, she attended Marquette Parochial School and was a 1966 graduate of Virginia Roosevelt High School. Deb attained her Nursing Degree from the College of St Scholastica in June 1970, followed by her Master of Arts in Health and Human Services in 1987 at St. Mary’s University in Minnesota.
On November 7, 1970, Debra married her high school flame and soulmate, Steven Allyn Clasen. Deb and Steve resided in the Duluth area and proudly raised two sons, Cory Allyn and Jeremy Aaron. The two of them have shared a full life by raising a family, enjoying their grandchildren, entertaining friends, loving their pets, nurturing beautiful flower gardens, being family caretakers, and traveling to Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mazatlan, Mexico.
Deb had a 42 year career in health and human services fields that spanned acute care, ambulatory care, home health care, long term care and public service. In the 1970’s, Deb changed jobs three times, going from shift work to nursing administration. Deb began her nursing career at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth on the urology floor. She went on to work as a St. Louis County Public Health Nurse and assisted in setting up Senior Centers in the area. In 1979, she was hired by St. Luke’s Hospital to develop the first hospital based home health care program in the region. This launched her career as a leader who thrived on innovation, organization and coordination of new programs. In addition to the Home Health Care Program, she was instrumental in the launching of St. Luke’s Hospital’s first helicopter flight program, and outreach programs for Occupational Medicine, Urgent Care and Specialty Clinic Services. In 1987 Deb was the first woman recognized by the Duluth Jaycee’s to receive the “Boss of the Year” award. Deb also had a successful and productive career at St. Francis in the Park in Superior, Wisconsin as the Director of Nursing where she impressed state auditors with her coordination of a flawless licensure audit. She retired her career with the prestigious honor as Deputy Director for the Northwest Region of Wisconsin in Health and Human Services and the Health Officer of Douglas County.
Deb’s passion for organization and historical documentation also pervaded to her hobbies at home. She followed the footsteps of her mother with detailed preservation of family information. She created over 100 memory books and wrote detailed genealogy records of her family’s history or helped other’s with their history. She had a unique skill to discover and organize information then capture genuine accounts of each family member’s personal passion and traits. Deb was active in her sons scouting and sporting activities, loved to cook ethnic foods, bake her mother’s recipes, make Cathedral Window coverlets, sew, knit, Diamond Dotz, garden, read, and travel to tropical areas. She enjoyed people and nature, particularly the birds, squirrels and chipmunks that trustingly came to her feeders; as well as the deer, bear and fox that would frequent their yard. Her love for pets was abundant, most recently enjoyed by the Clasen cat, Tigger. She was active in volunteerism and served on the Maple Ridge Townhome Association Board. Deb’s interest and passion in nursing came naturally. Deb was a caregiver for her father in her young adult years. Later, she and Steve were caregivers for her mother and her mother’s twin sister; and also Steve’s mother. Her love for her family was a continuous flow of light that ran deep through her heart. In addition to her two sons, she was proudly engaged in the lives of her six grandchildren whom she adored.
In short, Deb loved life. And she loved to hear and learn about the lives of others. She was genuinely interested in you as a person and was committed to helping others attain success in their career and/or life goals.
Deb was preceded in death by her mother and father (Frances and William Cimperman); aunt; (Helen Viezbicke), and brother (Eugene). She is survived by her husband, Steve, of Duluth; son Cory (Renee) Clasen of Fargo, ND; Jeremy (Sue) Clasen of Apple Valley, MN; grandchildren Calvin, Taylor, Danica, Trevor, Kaelyn, Emma Grace; brother William (Mary) Cimperman of Maple Grove; brother Ron (Judy) Cimperman of Virginia, MN; sister-in-law Ann (Eugene) Cimperman of Virginia; many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.

Obituary Preview: Beverly Ann Ecklund, 73, of Duluth, Minnesota,  passed away on March 10, 2022 after her short, heroic battle with pancreatic cancer.
Bev was born on October 30, 1948 to Donald and Doris Young in Brainerd, MN. Bev grew up on the farm prior to moving to Richfield, MN. Along with her parents and two brothers, Bev often took road trips to see family where they camped, fished and enjoyed wild life. As she grew up, Bev became an active member of the Girl Scouts of America and took the world by storm on her many wild adventures. Bev truly had a traveler's heart. She went on to graduate from Richfield Highschool and later moved to Duluth, MN to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1971. Bev began her work with the Duluth Police Department in 1972. The Beverly Eckund Law Enforcement Scholarship was her way of giving back to UMD and to encourage women who wished to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Through different points in her life, Bev enjoyed bowling on a couple's league, playing softball with her team, the Bad News Bears aka Old Bats Old Balls, going to car shows as a member of the Classic Cruisers car club, reading, gardening, snowmobiling, feeding the birds, enjoying nature and spending time with her family and friends. Franklyn Angelo Chida - June 23, 1929 - March 06, 2022

Departed: 03/06/2022 (Hermantown)
Obituary Preview: Franklyn Angelo Chida of Duluth, MN was lifted up on eagle’s wings into the arms of his savior Jesus on March 6, 2022.
Frank lived his 92 years with zest and curiosity for life. His adventures include sailing the Great Lakes in the Merchant Marine, serving as Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force in Korea, and the grandest adventure of all- raising a family of five children, with his loving wife Martha, in Virginia, Minnesota.
Our beloved dad was grampa to numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, stepfather, and step grandfather. Frank was a friend to many whose lives he touched with his kindness, generosity, and sacrificial giving especially for those in need. His uncanny ability to compute mathematical equations in his head was a force to be reckoned with, especially if we were playing cards! He loved telling corny jokes and he had so many of them (ugh!) Dad had a lifelong love of nature family picnics-winter, and summer – he was famous for taking all the neighborhood kids and us swimming and then to Dairy Queen. Our dad often brought home Canelakes Candy and soon became lifelong friends with the Canelakes family. We learned to savor the simple joys of daily life from example. He made friends with ease, befriending everyone he met. The world was kinder place with him in it. In 1981 after the untimely death of his beloved wife Martha, he moved to Arizona where he met his second wife, Shirley. While living in the Sonoran Desert his boyhood passion for geology flourished, where he happily hunted rocks, searched for Weaver’s needle and panned for gold. Our dad could look at any rock and give the scientific name for it. He was truly the “rock man. “
Our father’s legacy of love includes five children Sharon (Rob) Opitz, Diane (Rick Martin) McGarry, David Chida, Tracy (Darrel) Baker. He was pre deceased by his first wife, Martha our most loving mother, daughter Bonnie (Randy) Wabik and second wife, Shirley. The gentle, humble man was proud of each of his children and grandchildren. He was one of a kind. He loved Jesus, lived joyfully, hopefully, and was ever faithful. Visitation will be held at 11am Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Sunrise Funeral home followed by 12PM service

In her life, she had been dealt more bad hands than most, but went on to find true love and happiness. She took much joy in her 37-year relationship with the love of her life, Jerome (Jerry) Renner, who preceded her in death 4 years ago on Feb. 12th. In his sudden passing, he left behind a Valentine for her which he had not been able to give. For hours and hours, she pored through newspaper archives and old historical volumes seeking information about her lineage and family. She referred to herself as the “family historian” and was religious in maintaining multitudes of photo albums, clippings, and images of things she loved.
She found great passion in creating things with her hands and took up knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, latch hook, miniature models, painting, and more with great enthusiasm. She and Jerry traveled the fair circuit, entering their creations into competitions and winning many ribbons of which they were very proud.
