Joseph N. Kolanko - March 13, 1935 - May 20, 2024

Departed: 05/20/2024 (Rossford)
Obituary Preview: Joseph “Joe” Norbert Kolanko, 89, went to heaven on Monday, May 20, 2024, and is now resting peacefully after battling pulmonary fibrosis for much longer than he was expected to.
Born on Friday, March 13, 1935, in Union, Pennsylvania, to Polish and Ukrainian immigrant parents Stanley Kolanko and Rose Marie (Aleksander) Kolanko or Buscia and Dziadzi, they moved to Ohio and settled in Rossford.
Joe married his high school sweetheart, Rose (Sobieniak) Kolanko after dating for three years during high school on May 5, 1956. They were blessed to be able celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary together and were a couple a total of 71 years! After living in Toledo for a short time, they ended up back in Rossford, their hometown, to raise their four children.
Joe graduated from Rossford High School and Macomber Vocational School as a tool and die apprentice. He also attended school his junior year in Point Place to become a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. Joe spent his entire career at Basilius Tool & Die where he retired 25 years ago. After retirement, Joe continued to use his God-given talents to work on carpentry and various projects in his garage. The garage was his favorite room in his house, and he used it to build and fix almost anything for anyone who asked. A most common phrase amongst family members was “Take it to Grampy, he will fix it.”
Joe was a hard worker, tremendous father and master woodcraftsman. He was quite the sportsman too. While in the Coast Guard he won the ship’s bowling tournament; and most miraculously, if you had ever seen him golf, he had a hole in one! Joe was an avid Detroit professional teams’ supporter. He loved the Tigers, Lions and Pistons and rarely missed watching a game. He also closely followed The Ohio State Buckeyes and Toledo Rockets.
What Joe was most avid about was his family. He was happiest when the family was together laughing and partying. Joe liked to have a good time and truly enjoyed those moments with family and friends more than anything.
He was also a religious man with a very strong faith and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He attended All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford; and over the past several years before he became too ill, he donated his woodworking skills and made many beautiful pieces for the church.
His legacy for his children was that he was an anchor to a very loving family and passed that blessing on to his children and their children, who are now passing it on to their children.
He is survived by his wife Rose Marie “Rosie” Kolanko; sister-in-law Marie (Jim) Bode; children, Joseph (Dale) Kolanko, Julie Anderson, Mark (Kathy) Kolanko, Mary (Craig) Tammarine; grandchildren, Ashley Brown (Adrian Rabadan), Andrew Brown (deceased), Tucker (Raquel) Kolanko, Aleksandra Kolanko, Kellsey (Spencer) MacQueen, Taylor (Jacqui) Kolanko; great grandchildren, Charlie MacQueen, Carter MacQueen and soon-to-be born Caz Kolanko and Cora Kolanko, who will sadly miss meeting their legendary Grampy; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and all the friends he met along the way.
Joe will be greeted in heaven by too many to mention, but among them the first ones we know will be his grandson Andrew Brown, his parents and his brothers Stanley, Casmir and Edward.
We would like to say a special thank you to everyone at Hospice of Northwest Ohio who did a tremendous job taking care of Joseph this past year and being so good to his family as well.

Robert C. Stevenson - November 25, 1953 - May 05, 2024

Departed: 05/05/2024 (Rossford)
Obituary Preview: Robert "Bob" C. Stevenson, aged 70, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Kingston Residence of Perrysburg. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on November 25, 1953, to Robert and Doris (Zimmerman) Stevenson. Bob married his love, Paula Marie York on September 8, 1979, and they cherished 38 years together until her passing on June 7, 2018.
Bob graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in Chemistry in 1976. He commenced his career as an intern at the City of Toledo Water Treatment Facility, progressing to roles as Chemist, Manager, and eventually Commissioner. Bob's expertise in addressing the challenge of zebra mussels in the Great Lakes led to numerous contributions in scientific papers, books, and initiatives aimed at understanding and managing this invasive species.
In 2002, Bob assumed the role of Director of Public Utilities, subsequently becoming Director of the Toledo Waterways Initiative in 2006, overseeing a significant sewer and wastewater treatment plant rehabilitation project. During his tenure, Toledo's drinking water quality reached national acclaim, and was often ranked in the top five in the country. In recognition of his efforts and devotion to clean water, the American Water Works Association awarded Bob the prestigious George Warren Fuller Award in 2013.
Upon retiring from the City of Toledo in 2007, Bob joined Arcadis Engineering as Principal in Charge, managing water, wastewater, and engineering projects for the Toledo and Detroit areas until his official retirement in 2022.
Bob's character was marked by love, loyalty, integrity and honesty. He was a devoted friend, with friendships spanning 60 some years. He cherished time with family and enjoyed engaging in outdoor pursuits like birding, fishing, hunting, and golfing. An avid photographer, Bob captured countless family memories behind the lens. He was a serious Michigan Wolverines fan, and enjoyed watching the games with friends and his wife, Paula, despite her playful banter on whether he may or may not have been a OSU fan before she came along, proving love can really conquer the biggest of divides.
Though he is gone, his friends and family find comfort in the many memories they have. Special fishing trips, pep talks to the Christmas ornaments who may not make the tree, family dinners, tailgating Michigan vs. OSU games with friends, that time he tried to take the dog back but forever claimed they “just went for tomatoes”, and so much more, keep his family laughing and smiling during this difficult time.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Marissa Stevenson; son, Preston (Colton) Stevenson; and sister, Joyce Hensley who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Paula Stevenson.

Constance R Skoski - October 14, 1942 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Rossford)
Obituary Preview: Constance “Connie” R. Skoski
Constance Connie R Skoski, 81, passed away peacefully in her home in Perrysburg, OH, on March 4, 2024.
Connie was born October 14, 1942, in Detroit MI, to Stella and Joseph Stetz. She loved to share stories about her childhood and growing up in Warrendale on the west side of the city. Connie was very proud of her heritage and upbringing and could speak and write fluently in Polish. She attended St Peter and Paul School and this is where the nuns first instructed her to play the organ and piano. Recognizing her aptitude for music, her parents invested in private lessons. By age 13, she had become a regular fixture at weekend Mass as an organist.
Connie graduated from Cody High School in 1960 and then worked in the Detroit Public Schools as a secretary in the Special Education Department, but her true passion was always music. Connie went on to serve as Director of Music at several parishes including, St. Sabina; Dearborn Heights, MI, Blessed Trinity; Frankenmuth, MI, Our Lady of Refuge; Orchard Lake, MI, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help; Toledo, OH. She also taught private piano and voice lessons out of her home for over 40 years, touching hundreds of lives with her gifts and talents.
Connie was a quintessential people person. Her friends referred to her as “the Queen,” a role she took very seriously. Her generous spirit and larger than life personality set her apart. She loved to cook and entertain and had a wonderful penchant for storytelling often leaving her guests in fits of laughter.
But the role Connie relished the most was that of wife, mother, and nana. Stanley Kobylak - November 03, 1930 - January 25, 2024

Departed: 01/25/2024 (Rossford)
Obituary Preview: Stanley “Stan” C. Kobylak, 93, of Rossford, Ohio passed away peacefully Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, surrounded by his cherished family.
Stan was a mountain of a man, whose influence loomed large over all who knew him. He lived a life of lifetimes. He was born in southeastern Poland on November 3, 1930 to Wojciech and Anna (Gwozda) Kobylak. As a child, he happily whiled away his hours on the farm in Uhrynow Dolny until one horrific day in 1940, when the unimaginable occurred. World War II had arrived at their door. The family was arrested by the Soviet Police, locked in a cattle car, and shipped to a labor camp in Siberia. Stan, a prisoner of war at only 9-years-old, suffered at the hands of Stalin there for two grueling years until he and his surviving family members, along with tens of thousands of other Polish prisoners, were unceremoniously released from the camps, part of a British-brokered agreement between the Polish government-in-exile and the Soviets. Then would begin their harrowing trek to safety. Sadly, but not unsurprisingly, not all of Stan’s family survived to see freedom. The eldest son, and two youngest daughters perished, leaving mom, dad, Stan and his younger brother to mourn them as they journeyed through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. There, his family was torn apart once more when his father had to leave to join the ranks of the Polish military to fight with the Allies against the Nazis. Stan, his mother, and brother made their way to the refuge of an army camp in Tehran, Iran. Months later, as the region became increasingly unsafe, still displaced and longing for solace, they continued by ship through Durban, South Africa and finally to Bwana M’kubwa, a Polish refugee camp in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). Stan spent his adolescence there, attending a boarding school in nearby Lusaka. Finally able to enjoy being a kid, he looked back on his time in Africa fondly, often dubbing them the happiest years of his youth.
As a young adult in 1948, Stan joined his father in London, where the army had set up under British command. His mother, with Stan’s younger brother in tow, reestablished her citizenship in the United States and began building a home for her family in Rossford, OH. One year later, somewhat reluctantly if you’d asked him, Stanley joined them – with thanks to his cousin, John Cieply, who helped helped him gain entrance to the U.S. Against all odds, the family was finally together again. Stan met his sweetheart, Angela Wehrle. And with happier days ahead, married her on June 18, 1955. They built a family of five beautiful children and one pesky rooster who found his purpose in tormenting their eldest daughter. Stan and Angie celebrated an incredible 65 years of marriage together before she passed on September 26, 2020.
Stan spent most of his career with Mid States Grain Elevators, later owned by ADM/Countrymark, where his resourcefulness and jack-of-all-trades spirit served him well as the Regional Facilities Superintendent until his hard-earned retirement in 1993. Never one to rest on his laurels, he was also a man of service. He served honorably in the US Army and was a member and commander of the Polish Army Veterans’ Association. Stan contributed to the publishing of a book, “Polish Schooling in War-Time Exile,” and was honored to present a copy to Pope John Paul II, in 2004. He was a devout Catholic and active member of his church, crediting his faith in God for his survival through the darkest of days.
Stan was fortunate to be able to visit his homeland of Poland often. He remained dedicated to his traditions and nurtured his relationships with family and friends there up until his dying breath. He was held in such high regard back home in Poland. Heartfelt condolences have come in from loved ones in Poland declaring his enthusiasm for recounting his childhood and challenging wartime experiences etched in their memories. Lest up to now you’ve been led to believe he was all work and no play, it would be a great fault to honor his memory without mention of Stan’s happy place, his cottage on Lake Erie. He delighted in sharing his little slice of heaven on earth with family and friends. Fishing, boating, gardening, tinkering in the garage, cool-down swims at sunset after toiling away in the summer heat, it was righteous serenity – a happy ending for someone who’d quite literally had to fight for his life. Stanley had a thirst for knowledge and penchant for sharing it. He even tried his hand at cooking in his later years, though truthfully, he not so secretly enjoyed his meals most when prepared by someone else. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always eager to learn how to cast a line and reel in a big one, or how to harness the wind without getting knocked out by the jib, and Stan happily obliged. His greatest love was his family, and he cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Endearingly, they called him “Dziadzi.”
Stan is survived and his legacy will be carried by his children, Eugene (Dorothy) Kobylak, Theresa Whitmore, Anna Gwozdz, John (Deborah) Kobylak, and Christine (Timothy) Singler; grandchildren, Matthew (Ellisa), Jason (Lindsey), Jeffery (Marie), Keith, Kelly, Lindsy, Scott (Kelly), Jessica, Sarah (John), Brittany (Jared), and Spencer; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Angela Kobylak, his parents and siblings, Jan, Wladya, Marysia and Anthony.
