Raymond David Watkins - January 16, 1937 - May 10, 2024

Obituary Preview: Raymond David Watkins, 87, passed away Friday, May 10th, 2024, at Whitehall Rehab and Nursing Center in Whitehall, Illinois. He was born January 16th, 1937, at his grandparents' home in Quinlan, Texas. He was the oldest of four brothers and the son of Sam and Florence Watkins.
He married Beverly Ann Johnson in Denver, Colorado on December 20th, 1959. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage. He was the loving father to two sons and one daughter.
He joined the Naval Air Reserve in 1954 during his junior year of high school. Throughout the next few years, he attended electronic school and college at Arlington State College. He went into active duty in the Navy and lived in Georgia, California, and Washington. He was deployed to Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1956.
Throughout the years he worked as an aircraft electrician and worked in various roles in several churches. The family moved to Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Arkansas before settling back in Illinois in 1976. He served as the Dean and President of Illinois Missionary Baptist Institute and Seminary. Raymond’s education included his degree of Bachelor and Master of Theology in Bible Languages Degrees from Oklahoma Missionary Baptist Institute and Seminary, his Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honors from Cameron University, and his Doctor of Theology in Bible Languages Degree from the seminary. He served as the Pastor of Hart’s Prairie Missionary Baptist Church in rural Franklin, Illinois for 38 years.
Raymond is survived by his wife Beverly Watkins (Scottville, Illinois), his daughter Sherry Doyle (Mark) (Murrayville, Illinois), and his son David Watkins, (Jacksonville, Illinois). He has 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Alexander (Adam) (Chicago, Illinois), Jessica Wagner (Brynn) (Shiloh, Illinois), Sam Watkins (Kahley), Sara Watkins, and Joe Watkins (Jacksonville, Illinois). He is the great grandfather to eight great grandchildren. He has three brothers, Clarence Watkins (Arlington, Texas), Donald Watkins (Linda) (Tyler, Texas), and Ken Watkins (Carolyn) (Statesville, North Carolina). He has one sister-in-law, Kay Gwin (Garnett, Kansas).
He is preceded in death by his parents Sam and Florence Watkins and his son Daniel Watkins.

He married Doris Lee Smith and later married Judy Lee Armstrong who both preceded him in death.
Surviving is a brother Jeffery Kent King of Hettick, Il.; four nephews Kevin Witt of Pleasant Plains, Bob Armstrong (Janet) and Shane Armstrong (Misty) of all Hettick, Il., and Bryan Armstrong of Litchfield, Il.; two nieces, Kim Marsh (John) of Girard, Il., and April Connolly (Scott) of Modesto, Il.; and several great nieces and great nephews as well as his beloved dog Shanna.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; a sister Vera Lawson; a nephew Greg Lawson; and a niece Crystal Witt.
Dale worked at Monterey Coal Mine for 29 years. He loved to garden and giving away his vegetables to the neighborhood kids. He also loved to fish.

Janie Lair (Al) of Friendswood, Tx. and Candi Hettick (Bob) of Palmyra, Il.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; siblings, Stanley Ketchum, and Edward Ketchum in infancy.
Marjorie was a 1950 graduate of Carlinville High School and was a past employee of Macoupin County Locker Service, Carlinville National Bank, and Wedge Bank in Alton, as a bookkeeper for many years.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.
Always at home with her parents, Jean was a Special Olympian who won several medals over the years. She also did latchhook, and loved painting, swimming, cats, and vacations and travel. Jean was a people person who loved everyone she met. She was a past girl scout and attended Pathway School in Jacksonville. Jean was an avid Elvis fan.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (April 11, 2024) at Stults-Neece Chapel in Palmyra, Il. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the chapel. In addition to his wife Robert is survived by his children, Joshua Pratt (Sara) Kaleb Pratt all of Dennison, Tx., Damian Lee Pratt and Nicholas Ryan Pratt all of Palmyra, Il.; grandchildren, Adrian, Michael, and Cory; his mother Elaine Pratt of Modesto, Il.; siblings, Daniel Pratt (Peggy) of Yellville, AR. and Patricia Pratt Brockmeyer of Palmyra, Il.; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his father.
Robert was a graduate of Lincolnwood High School in Raymond, Il. He then became employed by Capital Records in Jacksonville and later Springfield Plastics in Auburn and Anderson-Clayton in Jacksonville, Il. His recent employment was with Tripp Landscaping in Springfield, Il. and did yard maintenance on his own for many years. He loved to mow, garden, and listen to music.
A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday (April 10, 2024) at Grace Baptist Church in Palmyra, Il. Private burial will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra, Il. She married Howard Bridges on April 17, 1992 in Charleston and he preceded her in death on July 9, 2019.
She is survived by her son, Blane Bridges of Palmyra; her brother, Kyle (Donna) McNeely of Palmyra; her sisters, Brenda Jo (Doug) Oxley and LaDona (John) Hammond both of Modesto, Laura (Duane) Moore of Lincoln; her special sister, Joy (Brian) Thibadeau of Scottville; close friend, Randy Hires of Waverly; several nieces and nephews and Ollie, Arlo and Bandy, her beloved pets. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Brian McNeely.
Kara attended St. John’s School of Nursing. She worked as a Surgical Assistant at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield and later as office manager for Wheat, Williams, Scannura, Woolbright and Fischer Oral & Maxillofacial Office in Jacksonville/Springfield. She was currently working as Bank Manager at People’s Bank and Trust in Waverly. She was a strong supporter of the American Legion in Palmyra. She enjoyed playing darts on a league in Waverly and will be remembered for being a very caring person and for making people smile.

Also surviving are her children, Jennifer Noble (Charles) of Springfield, Il., Jeffrey Michaelis (Natosha) of Carlinville, Il.; two grandchildren, Camryn Michaelis, and Graylin Michaelis; a sister, Jeanne Haley (Richard) of Hettick, Il; brothers, Mike Burk of Hettick, Il. and Don Burk (Patty) of Palmyra, Il.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Joann was a 1971 graduate of Northwestern High School in Palmyra, Il. She was an employee of Schein Body and Equipment, and Monterey Coal Co. and recently Macoupin Co. Farm Bureau as an administrative assistant, where she retired in 2018. She was also a member of Farm Bureau. Joann was an avid traveler, who loved vacationing with her family and organizing trips for the Macoupin County “Prime Timers.”

She was born September 8, 1930 in Springfield, Il. daughter of the late Rosario and Mary Spanglo Passalacqua.
Surviving are her children, Margy Fairfield (Larry) of Palmyra, Il., Cindy Jo Turner (Doug) of Modesto, Il., Kathy K. Campbell (Chris) of Palmyra, Il., and Keith “Schrambo” Schramm (Marty) of Palmyra, Il.; grandchildren, Tiffany (Bryan) Thomson, Gabe Fairfield, Adam (Courtney) Turner, Gretchen Bilbruck, Shawn (Brian) Buhl, Brittany Schramm (Anthony), Kaylie (Jack) Doran, and Doug Drew (Sarah) Campbell; seventeen great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Joshua Sonneborn; a great-granddaughter, Mary Hannah Thomson; two sisters, Rosemary Horn and Kathryn “Honey” Passalacqua; a brother, Freddie Passalacqua (Clara); and a niece, Janice Passalacqua Powell.
Nook graduated from Palmyra High School in 1948, the last class before it became Northwestern High School.
On April 16, 1949, Nook married Marvin K. (Buster) Schramm, her high school sweetheart, in Greenfield, Illinois.
Nook loved to spend time with her family and her many life-long friends. She was a very loving, kind, and forgiving person. She enjoyed attending events for her children and grandchildren and was always ready for an adventure! After she and Buster moved the family to Corsicana, Texas in 1972, she went to work at the hospital. Later Buster and Nook owned and operated Schramm Jewelry and Pawn in Ennis, Texas.
After retiring, it was time to move back to Modesto to be close to family. She and Buster spent their time traveling and camping, spending winters in the valley (Texas) and sometimes Florida.
The family will host a Celebration of Life 3 p.m. Sunday (January 28, 2024) at Modesto United Methodist Church in Modesto, Il. Burial will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra, Il. He married Donna Smith on January 9, 1954 in Virden, Il. and she preceded in death.
Surviving are his children, Debbie Sonneborn of Hettick, Il., and James Ralston (Crystal) of Hettick, Il.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Lou Crouch of Virden, Il.; a brother Coy Ralston of Georgia, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Ralston, sisters, Norma Sarginsonn and Joyce Bettis; and brothers Roy Ralston, Bobby Ralston, and Ronnie Ralston.
James was a lifelong farmer. He also volunteered with Illinois Volunteers, cleaning up after natural disasters the throughout the country.

Obituary Preview: Phillip Cary Abbott, age 55 of Palmyra passed away Thursday, November 30, 2023 at his residence from complications after 8 years of battling cancer. He was born October 29, 1968 in Washington, the son of James and Linda Valentine Abbott. He married Toni Barnard September 11, 1993 in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Tiffany (Barrett) Walters of Jerseyville, Cassidy Abbott of Jacksonville, his parents, James and Linda Abbott of Washington, three grandchildren, Ryan Boston, Aubree Walters, Ainsley Abbott, and a sister, Kelly (Larry) Green of Washington.
Phillip was a contractor in the Palmyra area for several years. He then went to work for LS Building materials in Springfield. He was an avid baseball pitcher all the way through college. He coached girls travel softball and was the assistant coach for Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville for many years. Phillip was a longtime member of the Beverly Manor Baptist Church in Washington.  He loved spending time with his girls and grandchildren and family, they were the highlight of his life. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Routt Catholic High School Softball Program. Stults- Neece Chapel in Palmyra is assisting the family. Robert "Bob" Schlessman - October 22, 1950 - November 27, 2023

Obituary Preview: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Schlessman, aged 73, on November 27, 2023. Bob, of Springfield, Il. and formerly Palmyra, Il., peacefully departed this world, succumbing to various medical complications following surgery in October. Supported by the love of his family, Bob left this world holding the hand of his beloved wife of 35 years, Vickey (Scheferkort) Schlessman. Bob was a remarkable man, known for his unwavering devotion to his family and faith. He was an honorable veteran of the United States Army, an adoring husband, a proud father, a loving grandfather, and a steadfast man of God. "Engineer" Bob embarked on his life journey with Vickey in 1988, building their lives together in various Illinois towns during his lengthy career as an engineer. He dedicated much of his early professional life to EMI in Jacksonville, IL, and Litton Industries in Holland, MI. In 2004, when EMI's plant closed its doors, Bob's path took an inspiring turn as he delved into formal ministry. As "Pastor" Bob, he fervently spread the gospel and served his community in countless ways, most notably as the spiritual leader of Palmyra Christian Church. Even after leaving active ministry, Bob's commitment to service endured. He became “Teacher” Bob and
spent years supporting students at Northwestern High School and Middle School in Palmyra, IL, known affectionately as Mr. S.
Bob was a man of many passions. He was a lifelong lover of music, finding solace in playing his guitar and singing. He had an insatiable appetite for reading, passing down his love for books to his children. A self-proclaimed and proud "nerd," especially in the realm of computer engineering, Bob had been building his own computer systems since the early 1980s. Yet, above all, Bob was known for his exceptional generosity, always willing to give the shirt off his back to a neighbor in need.
In addition to his wife, Vickey, Bob leaves behind a loving legacy through his five children - Kathy (Doug) Fauth, Donald (Mary Ann) Utley, Katie (Kevin) Flint, Jessica (Corey) Darnall, and Aaron (Pahroul) Schlessman. He also leaves behind eleven cherished grandchildren. Bob's brother, Wayne, is the last surviving sibling of the seven Schlessman boys.
Services to celebrate Bob's life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (December 5, 2023) at Palmyra Christian Church in Palmyra, Il. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at the church. Private burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Il. We invite all who knew and loved Bob to join us in honoring his memory and the indelible mark he left on our lives. Lisa was a 1984 graduate of Northwestern High School and was caregiver in home health care for many years. Lisa loved to cook, bake, and was a people person who loved all celebrations.

Noel E. Hicks - December 30, 1929 - September 29, 2023

Obituary Preview: Noel E Hicks, 93, of Scottville died peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2023 at Stonebridge Memory Care in Jacksonville. Noel was born in Waverly, IL on December 30, 1929 to Alden and Margaret (Crossland) Hicks. He attended Sunny Point Country School and graduated from Scottville High School in 1947. He married Wanda D. Eades on Aug. 10, 1951. They enjoyed a marriage of 69 years, a life filled with love and laughter as well as a prosperous partnership concerning their farm.
Noel was involved with farming his entire life. He constantly read about the latest techniques in farming and implemented what made the best sense for his operation. He was mechanically gifted and could often be found in his machine shop repairing, inventing, and engineering equipment and hardware to improve his operations.
Noel is survived by his son, Steven of Scottville, daughter, Patricia (husband, Cliff) Bilbruck of Palmyra, daughter, Elaine (husband, Kent) Moberly of Chapel Hill, N.C.; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sisters, Eleanor Hicks and Helen Lowery and his daughter-in-law, Debbie Hicks.
His family was extremely important to him. His children and grandchildren found him to be a wonderful listener and mentor who would impart significant life lessons to them by word or deed. Noel found joy in waking up every day and “playing in the dirt”. He viewed farming as a passion and a gift.
Noel honorably served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army. Noel also served his community on the Scottville Township Board for several years and was on The Federal Land Bank in the 1980s. Additionally, he was a member of the Scottville Masonic Lodge from the age of 21 and involved with the Palmyra Lions Club.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday (October 14, 2023) at Stults-Neece Chapel in Palmyra, Il. Burial will be in Panther Creek Cemetery where graveside military rites will be conducted by Palmyra American Legion Post. Visitation will be held 5 pm. To 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel. Ernest was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for the City of Palmyra for seven years. He was a Mason and a member of Virden Masonic Lodge. Ernest also was a volunteer at many nursing homes acting as ombudsman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Steven King in infancy; sisters, Helen Streck, and Ella Jean Moore, and brothers, James Ambrose and Harold “Cap” Ambrose.
She was a graduate and Salutatorian at Scottville High School, class of 1946. She married Myron “Ike” King of Athensville. Polly along with her husband ran the Red & White Grocery Store in Scottville from 1954 until the early 1970’s. Polly then moved to Jacksonville and started her new career as a clerk at the Emporium and later Klines department store. After retiring, she returned to the town she loved, Scottville. She made beautiful quilts, liked to garden, and do puzzles in the winter. The family wants to thank her neighbors for always watching out for her.

Also surviving are son, Rod Stults of Palmyra, Il. and Rob Stults (Amy) of New Berlin, Il.; grandchildren, Cody, Hunter, Maddie, Katie, and Bayley; and great-grandchildren, Cole, Jack, and Indigo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Wilma Lea “Sissy” Stults.
Tom was a 1961 graduate of Northwestern High School. Following graduation, Tom aided his mother and father in the day-to-day operations of Stults Funeral Home in Palmyra, Il. He later became an insurance agent, owning and operating Shearburn/Stults Insurance Agency in Palmyra, Il. Tom was groundskeeper and later was manager of Terry Park Golf Course in Palmyra, Il. for twenty years. Tom was a past Palmyra Volunteer Fire Fighter, EMT, a past member and district governor of Lions Club, Palmyra Village Board, Carlinville Hospital Board, and a past Macoupin Co. Deputy Coroner. He was also a past North Palmyra Township Tax Assessor. Tom also farmed for several years west of Palmyra. Tom had a passion for golf and enjoyed the time spent on the course with family and friends. One of Tom’s greatest accomplishments was shooting a 29 on 9 holes at Terry Park.

Janice was a 1967 graduate of Northwestern High School. She attended Lincolnland College and worked for the Bank of Palmyra for several years. Currently she was president of Passalacqua and Powell Trucking in Palmyra, Il. Janice loved sitting outside on her swing and reading.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jim Barnard.
Russell was a graduate of Northwestern High School. He was an Army veteran and following the military, worked 46 years for Mac Murray College in Jacksonville retiring as the physical plant director in 2006. Russell’s loved horses and his love of horses was well known. He had broke well of 200 horses in his lifetime. He was a member of the Morgan County Saddle Club.

Tammy also loved to fish.
