James W. Duerkes - June 08, 1931 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: James W. Duerkes, 92 of Virginia Beach, VA sailed on into his heavenly home on May 3rd, 2024. He was born on June 8,1931 North Arlington, N.J to the late Charles & Gertrude Duerkes.Neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor hail truly ever stopped him from faithfully serving as one of the hardest working letter carriers on foot for the United States Post Office in Asbury Park N.J. for over 30 years to provide for his family. He loved fishing, playing horseshoes, basketball & baseball. In his later years when he was benched in front of the TV, he branched out watching every sport imaginable, even into the wee hours of the night enjoying along with a bowl of cheetos or chips. He also enjoyed making candy, cookies & cakes for family, friends, neighbors & church functions where some people even started calling him “Jim the baker!” which he ate up, no pun intended! He loved family functions, having an audience to rev up his Duerkes, type of Don Rickles sense of humor, often laughing at his own jokes, country music, & his hourly after dinner bible reading. He is survived by his sister Violet O’ Shea, of N.J., his patient & loving wife Elizabeth (Elaine) of 69 years, their daughters, Therese Mangieri, Karen Gilmore, & Janet Delacruz, his son, Jimmy Duerkes, his 3 grandsons Scott Mangieri & wife Larissa, Ryan Delacruz & wife Harmony, Daniel Gilmore, & wife Lilly, his grandaughter Jenelle Bess & 2 great grandaughters, Alexa Mangieri & Delta Mangieri. He is predeceased by his brothers, Charles, Robert, Henry & John, & his sisters Gertrude Garvey, Lillian Byrne & Grace Emmons. He’d randomly break out singing “ I want to be a sailor sailing on the sea, I want to be a sailor & see what I can see”, from the 1940’ s film “ The Thief of Bagdad”. Well you have now finally sailed into the glory of heaven & into the presence of the Great I Am & Our Lord & Savior King Jesus! And as far as being able to see what you can see, 1 Corinthians 2:9 tells us “ No Eye has seen, No ear has heard, No mind has imagined what God has prepared for those that love Him”.Upon his wishes to be cremated, there will be no ceremony, simply a private celebration of his bon voyage into heaven with the immediate family.

Mark Roy Newell - March 08, 1961 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: Mark Roy Newell - loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend went home to be with the Lord on Monday night, March 18, 2024, in his home in Chesapeake, Va with his wife by his side. Those he will meet in heaven include his father, Richard, his mother, Patsy, his grandparents, and Trish’s parents. His passing was sudden while fighting a heroic battle against cancer.Mark is survived by his wife of 40 years, Trish, his son Ryan and his wife Hannah and grandson Jaxson, his son Austin and his wife Maegan, his daughter Christy and her husband Davin, his youngest son Tyler, his brother Richard and significant other Teri Farris.Growing up in a military family, Mark moved extensively before ending up in Virginia Beach. He graduated from Kempsville High School and went on to Virginia Wesleyan University to study business. His entrepreneurial aspirations along with his amazing work ethic instilled by his mother, Pat, led him to start his own landscaping business. His love for business led him to multiple business endeavors throughout his life. When Mark was a young boy, his mom would put a picture on the refrigerator and say if you want it, you’ve got to go make the money to go buy it! So, he started collecting bottles, cutting neighbors yards, walking dogs, and anything else he could do to make money! This taught him at a young age how to start and run a business and eventually led to his little lawn care business which would later become a large landscape business. I will never forget when he told me his high school guidance counselor asked him “What are you going to do, cut grass for the rest of your life?” Well, he did, and he was very successful. In his 20's, Mark met Trish and the whirl wind four-decade long romance began. They were married right after Trish graduated from college and have been together ever since! They bought their beautiful home that they both were incredibly proud of, and they went on to raise 4 amazing, loving, incredible children. Their family expanded in recent years to three spouses, a host of in-laws, and their first grandchild in which he found so much joy.Mark invested in the family in so many ways, from partnering with friends to build a house in Corolla, NC for family getaways, coaching the boy’s baseball and soccer teams, coaching Christy’s softball team, and attending cheer functions and competitions that Christy was in. Mark loved to be involved in all his children’s endeavors. Mark even put a pool in the backyard to expand the home for family and friends; there were always dozens of kids and adults relaxing and having fun, everyone was welcomed. Mark loved a pool party and seafood bake surrounded by family and friends.2023 was a very special year for Mark. First, he walked Christy down the aisle in a spectacular resort in the Shenandoah mountains followed by taking the family to Florida for Austin and Maegan’s equally stunning wedding. Both weddings were magical, and two more members were added to the family.Mark loved to travel, and cruising was his favorite vacation with his family! He was an avid diver and everyone in the family enjoyed diving together. He had an uncanny will to live. His greatest joys were his wife, his children, and grandchild whom he loved spending every free minute with, along with the pups. He loved the businesses that he built with his wife, son, and brother. Seeing his vision coming true gave him so much pride and passing the business down to one of his sons (Ryan) was always his grand plan.Mark and Trish’s life was once described as a true fairytale. They had 40 amazing years together and he always said he wouldn't have changed a thing. His faith-filled journey was a beacon of light for so many people, including his family. He felt his journey was to spread Gods love and start a healing revolution. Sunday mornings were his favorite time as he loved the Bridge church family and the idea of bringing someone new and sharing his passion. In addition, his faith and love for the church. Mark’s legacy of his love and strength will always be with us. Services will be held at Bridge Church on Friday, April 12 at 1:00pm at 3168 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach 23456.
Mark Roy Newell - loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend went home to be with the Lord on Monday night, March 18, 2024, in his home in Chesapeake, Va with his wife by his side. Those he will meet in heaven include his father, Richard, his mother, Patsy, his grandparents, and Trish’s parents. His passing was sudden while fighting a heroic battle against cancer.
Mark is survived by his wife of 40 years, Trish, his son Ryan and his wife Hannah and grandson Jaxson, his son Austin and his wife Maegan, his daughter Christy and her husband Davin, his youngest son Tyler, his brother Richard and significant other Teri Farris.
Growing up in a military family, Mark moved extensively before ending up in Virginia Beach.
Their family expanded in recent years to three spouses, a host of in-laws, and their first grandchild in which he found so much joy.
Mark invested in the family in so many ways, from partnering with friends to build a house in Corolla, NC for family getaways, coaching the boy’s baseball and soccer teams, coaching Christy’s softball team, and attending cheer functions and competitions that Christy was in. Mark loved to be involved in all his children’s endeavors. Mark even put a pool in the backyard to expand the home for family and friends; there were always dozens of kids and adults relaxing and having fun, everyone was welcomed. Mark loved a pool party and seafood bake surrounded by family and friends.
2023 was a very special year for Mark. First, he walked Christy down the aisle in a spectacular resort in the Shenandoah mountains followed by taking the family to Florida for Austin and Maegan’s equally stunning wedding. Both weddings were magical, and two more members were added to the family.

She was always an active member of the churches she attend since childhood. In schools she was an excellent student, graduating with top honors from Calvert High School in 2000. She would continue her education after high school by attending Pensacola Christian College in Florida and graduating in the class of 2004.Grade school and College is where she found many long lasting friendships that would continue to endure, long after graduation and across the distance of many state, where these friends would call their homes and begin their future lives. They were sometime able to meet back and reconnect in person but even when busy lives made that difficult, the friendships still held strong. She cherished these friendships and remained in regular contact with these amazing friends. They shared with each other in the joys of life events like careers, adventure, weddings, motherhood and gave comfort in times of sadness. After college her mother Linda helped her get work at the US Census Bureau, the US Dept of the Interior then she attained her dream job at the National Gallery of Art. Her passion for museums was a major part of her life. The preservation of history, the sharing of past works of art as well as the promotion new local artist and teaching the next generation child right here in the Northern Neck of Virginia the beauty of making their own art. When her mother retired from her long career at the Census Bureau after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, she followed the family right here to Montross, living in the house that once belonged to Linda parents, Lucy and Herbet Bryant... which many of you know better as "Coonie".It was here that she gained an additional family, one full of friends, coworker and neighbors like the one who have joined us here today in memory of her life.In only a few days, it will be April Fools Day, Which would have marked her 11yr anniversary from when she began to work at the Westmoreland County Museum. A position that she took great pride in and brought her incredible joy. Unfortunately that joy would turn to sadness a year later in September 2014 when Linda Morris, her beloved mother would passed away from the her battle with ALS. She cared for her during that time and was with her every step of the way. As everyone knows, the two were an inseparable pair, a real Thelma and Louise.Together attending community events, visiting the local sites and taking trips to beautiful places across the country, where they would create vibrant, long lasting memories that Brianna cherished and held close to her heart in the years to follow. She would share those memories and create new ones with many of you. Every year her and her brother Brett, for their vacations would plan trips to the places where their mother had taken the 3 of them in the past to revisit, relive, and recreate the pictures they held in the fondest of memories. Memorializing these pictures in a "THEN & NOW" recapturing of those moments, but now missing one wheel from what made up the Tricycle of this Traveling Trio. This week, one more wheel has stopped spinning on that cycle. Her brother Brett, now is carrying on that decade long annual tradition they shared. A tradition that was briefly interrupted by the Covid 19 pandemic. The Pandemic, like for many of us, was a difficult time for Brianna. She loved the outdoors, visiting friends and face to face social interaction like the only she diligently coordinated at the museum. The first year of the shutdown, she began a project of cooking a new dish or beautifully decorated dessert everyday. Must of you saw her posts and had to salivate over them through social media, the luckiest among got to enjoy them with her. She loved food and expressing art not only in the visual sense in decorating desserts, but sharing it through sense taste in everything she baked with care.In late 2019, through one of the many events she coordinated with the museum and local artist, she met Howard Gebeaux. As a local artist attending the event, he worked up the nerve to ask her out to the local winery and even though she didn't drink, she still accepted. They found companionship and then soon after marriage. Brianna and Howard had a wedding ceremony in February of 2020. They supported each other throught the trying times of the covid lockdowns and restrictions that could strain any new relationship. William "Bill" Thomas Carter - November 14, 1935 - March 06, 2024

Departed: 03/06/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: William "Bill" Thomas Carter, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 6th, 2024 surrounded by his family. Born in Richmond, Virginia on November 14th, 1935, Bill learned the principles of working hard to fulfill his dreams at a young age. As class valedictorian and team captain of his high school's football team, he was offered a slew of full-ride scholarships before deciding to play football for the College of William and Mary. It was there, in 1956, that our William found his Mary, the love of his life, Mary Sue Tinnell. Together, they built a family, one stretching far beyond blood, that he took so much pride in providing for - first as a manager at IBM for more than three decades, followed by another three decades as owner of Carter and Associates. And as hard as he worked, he knew how to play even harder. Bill was an avid exerciser and loved the outdoors, spending 365 days a year watching God's beautiful sunsets from the deck of his beach house, which was aptly named "The Cottage of William and Mary". He was famous for his homemade ham biscuits, one-liner zingers, encyclopedic knowledge of music history and ability to cut up the dance floor wherever he went. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Foster Carter, his mother, Margaret Inez Carter, and his daughter, Mary Kay Murphy. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mary Sue Tinnell Carter, son David Russell Carter Sr., daughter Laurie Carter Moncure (John), eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Saturday, March 16th, 2024 at 2 pm at Sandbridge Community Chapel UMC (3041 Sandpiper Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456). Donations can be made in Bill's name to the Sandbridge Volunteer Rescue Squad or Sandbridge Community Chapel.
