Obituary Preview: Joanne E. Janos (nee MacSween), originally of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, passed away peacefully, with her loving husband by her side, on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024 at the age of 72.
Joanne was a beloved wife of 42 years to her husband John C. Janos, a devoted mother to her daughter Kara (Kendall) Eberhardt, and a cherished grandmother (Nan) to her two grandchildren Ellie and Dillon. She was dearly loved by her sister Heather (Brent) Wetmore of British Columbia, Canada, and her sisters-in-law Kathy (Jay) Thatcher and Marjorie Janos (deceased). Joanne will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews, both in Canada and the United States. She was predeceased by her parents Angus and Thelma MacSween of North Vancouver, British Columbia.
Joanne was a graduate of the University of British Columbia and an elementary school teacher in North Vancouver for nearly 10 years. She spent countless hours during that time pursuing her passion for early education, and many additional hours engaged in extracurricular activities with her students.
Joanne married John in 1982 and settled in Havertown, Pennsylvania where they began their married life together. She continued to proudly maintain her Canadian Citizenship and applied her educational experience to teaching preschool. She later devoted herself to raising her daughter, Kara, and spent innumerable hours involved with Brownies, Girl Scouts, softball, basketball and many other extracurricular activites. She was also an active Sunday School Teacher at the Llanerch Presbyterian Church, a member of the Church’s Board of Trustees, and a valued contributor to the Llanerch/Havertown communities.
Despite being afflicted in early adulthood with Polycystic Kidney Disease, Joanne refused to allow this disease to define her life. Instead, she applied her strength, wisdom and resilience to raising her daughter, Kara, and shared her wit and humor with family, friends and the many other people she met along her life’s journey.
The Janos family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the multitude of doctors, specialists, nurses and staff members at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, as well as Penn home health nursing staff, for providing expert care during Joanne’s recurring bouts with her debilitating illness.
We also extend our love and appreciation to Joanne’s family and friends for all their prayers and well wishes throughout her years of illness. We were truly blessed and incredibly grateful for all the support Joanne received throughout her life.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joanne’s Memorial Service on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at the Llanerch Presbyterian Church, 211 Lansdowne Road, Havertown, PA.

Robert James Bruce - August 12, 1937 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (HAVERTOWN)
Obituary Preview: Robert J. Bruce, President Emeritus of Widener University
Robert (Bob) James Bruce, 86, of Edgmont Township, President Emeritus of Widener University, died on Friday, April 19 of heart failure. He left a profound legacy in higher education and a variety of philanthropic causes across southeastern Pennsylvania.
Mr. Bruce grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts and attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine. It was there where he met the love of his life, Judith (Garland) Bruce, his wife of 60 years, who predeceased him in 2019. Their love of Maine endured, with the family spending summers at their home in Castine for over 30 years.
Bob began his journey in education after obtaining a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and teaching history. In 1964 he spent a year in the United Kingdom with his family as a Fulbright Scholar. Thereafter, he began a 40 year career in higher education, beginning at Colby College. He became Vice President for Development at Bard College, was later appointed Acting President, and was subsequently awarded the Bard Medal. Following that, he spent time at Clark University. The culmination of his career was spent at Widener University, where he worked for 25 years, the last 20 of which he served as the institution’s 8th President, from 1981 to his retirement in 2001.
Under Bruce’s leadership, Widener (formerly Pennsylvania Military College) grew from a small, regional college to a comprehensive university. He architected dramatic changes, including the creation of a traditional university structure with six schools and colleges born out of existing programs, as well as adding master’s and doctoral level programs in many disciplines, including the foundation of the School of Law. In recognition of his efforts, Widener awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1992. Following his retirement in 2001, he authored the book Acting on Promise, Reflections of a University President.
Bruce twice served as the Chairman of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, was Chairman of the National Association of the Independent Colleges and Universities and served as a member of the NCAA Presidents Commission.
Bruce was extraordinarily impactful and generous with his time in philanthropic efforts. As a former board member of the Crozer-Keystone Health System and former Board Chairman of the Crozer Chester Medical Center, he helped architect The Foundation for Delaware County, with over $70 million in assets it is today the largest philanthropic organization in Delaware County. He served on the Foundation’s board of directors and received the organization’s Founder Award in 2022.
Bruce had great passion for his Scots heritage and was a long-standing member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia, of which he served as a member of the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees. He also was a member of the Society’s Scholarship Committee and Chairman of the Development Committee.
Bruce was born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1937 to Andrew Carson Bruce and Ruth Lillian (Barr) Bruce and is survived by his sister Dorothy (Bruce) Willis. He was exceptionally proud of his family, surviving his son Scott G. Bruce (Gigi) and daughter, Kimberley (Bruce) Campbell (Chris). He had seven grandchildren, Kathryn (Campbell) Hoge (Fred), Sarah (Bruce) Cantley (Will), Andrew Garland Bruce (dec.) (Alex), Elizabeth Bruce Campbell (dec.), Courtney Stuart Campbell (Travis), Gillian Graham Bruce and Douglas Bruce Campbell. He also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren, Lucy, Claire, Kate, Caroline, Freddy, Charlotte, Maggie and Ellie.
Words cannot be found to describe the impact Bob had on so many people throughout his life. An eternally upbeat, curious, caring, person with seemingly boundless energy, he lived a full rich life, of which his family is immensely proud.
A memorial service will be held at St. Francis-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church in Malvern, PA at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

John is also preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Elysia (nee Gallagher) Fitzpatrick. John and Elysia met in 1959, while both worked at Provident Mutual in Philadelphia, John in the accounting department and Elysia as a writer of the employee magazine. On a dare to talk to the new girl in the office, John asked Elysia out for a date to the Ice Capades on Christmas night. The rest was history - John and Elysia built a life of devotion to each other, to their family and to their faith.
John was a graduate of Northeast Catholic High School in the class of 1950, and from St. Joseph’s University in the class of 1954. John served in the United States Army active duty from 1955 to 1957. He graduated from Temple University Law School, evening division, in the class of 1961. Soon after, John joined the Dilworth Paxson law firm, practicing as a litigator with the firm for over thirty years before joining the Social Security Administration as an Administrative Law Judge. An exceptional lawyer, John will be most remembered as a wonderful mentor to young lawyers and trusted friend to his many colleagues. To his family, he was full of activity – he loved hiking and biking, sports of all kinds, scavenger hunts, midnight adventures, talks of politics and physics, Friday night treats, and Saturday morning “no-duts.” John’s integrity, good humor, and kindness were his enduring qualities.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday July 22, 2024 at Saint John Neumann Church in Bryn Mawr. Friends are invited to visit with the family before Mass beginning at 9:00 a.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in John’s memory to St. Joseph’s University.
