Jack Albert Clifford Greening - May 16, 1938 - May 18, 2024

Departed: 05/18/2024 (Antigo)
Obituary Preview: Jack Albert Clifford Greening, age 86, entered his heavenly home on May 18,2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jack was born on May 16, 1938 in Antigo. He was the youngest (and quite possibly the sassiest) of 5 children born to Fred and Margaret Greening. He grew up in Antigo, went to Peace Lutheran school through 8th grade and graduated from Antigo High School with the class of 1956.
After high school he proudly served in the Wisconsin National Guard for two years. He married his true life mate, Margaret “Pat” (Berdan) Greening in 1962, she preceded him in death on March 18, 2021. Together they raised 5 children in the former St. Mary’s Nun’s house that Jack moved a few blocks down the road and renovated. He worked for the City of Antigo Water Department for 36 years. He was a man of deep faith and a devoted member of Peace Lutheran Church where he served on various boards, committees and truly enjoyed his time as a deacon. He spent many hours doing repairs, construction and general maintenance on the church and school he so loved. Jack had a fun-loving nature and found great pleasure in teasing anyone who would tolerate it, particularly the girls in the office at Peace and the wait staffs at Two Angels and Truck’s Place. His big laugh will be greatly missed. He had a servant’s heart lending his hand wherever and whenever needed to friends and strangers alike. If you couldn’t find him at Fleet Farm or Menards, you’d find him in his back garage with his good buddies building or fixing something, and solving all of the world’s problems (or at least Antigo’s). He was a talented wood worker building many pieces that now grace the homes of his children and grandchildren. After years of teasing his friends and family for spending money to chase a little white ball around, Jack became an enthusiastic golfer in retirement and went on to enjoy countless hours on courses around the State. An avid supporter of the Antigo Red Robins, he readily embraced his role as their #2 fan and took great pride in meticulously grooming Kretz Park for several years. His greatest joy came in spending time with his children and grandchildren, there were few sporting activities and events he missed where one of his own was participating. He was a proud father but an even prouder grandfather.
In addition to his wife and parents, Jack was preceded in death by two grandsons, Kristopher Greening and Bradley Greening; two sisters Delores (Tony) Lombardo and Bernadine (Joe) Lenzner; and a brother, Carl Greening. He is survived by three sons, Bill (Jean) Greening, Antigo, Dave (Kathy) Greening, Green Lake and Dick(Sandy) Greening, Deerbrook; two daughters, Barbara Mueller, Hurley and Jackie Greening, Antigo; 7 Grandchildren Eric (Becca) Greening, Amanda (Mike) Prachel, Scott (Caitlin) Greening, Daniel Mueller (Ashley Koski), Jamie (James Razienda) Greening, Brett (Summer) Greening, and Nick Greening; 12 Great-Grandchildren Eli, Everly, Hayden, Delaney, Sawyer, Lennon, Veronika, Viktoria, Anastastia, Paisley, Jackson and Tommy; Brother Fred Greening, Denver CO; Sister-in-Law Joyce Greening, Neenah and many cherished nieces and nephews. He is also survived by some really good friends who never failed to show up when Jack called. If you listen close, you might actually hear his distinctive laugh as he’s shouting down from heaven…”It looks good from the road” or “I don’t care….I don’t live here”
The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Deep, Dr. Peterson, the nurses and staff at the Volm Cancer Center, Hands with Hearts, Marge Miller and LeRoyer Hospice for the kind and gracious care they gave to Jack throughout his illness.
Memorials have been established at The Boys and Girls Club of the Northwoods and Peace Lutheran Childcare in honor of Jack’s devotion to his community and his desire to see the children of this community thrive.
A memorial service for Jack will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church. A visitation will take place prior to the service from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at the church. Private burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
