Obituary Preview: Haywood Walker, 68, of Lititz, died peacefully Tuesday morning at the Lancaster Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a short bout with cancer. Recognized as one of the true icons of Lititz, Walker was well known for his rascally smile, his hand waves to all passing vehicles on Main and Broad streets and his hopeful catch phrase, “You're not just my friend. You're my family.”
Walker owned his own one-man mowing business in town for several decades, taking care of people's yards when they were away on vacation, often not accepting money for his labor of love for lawns and grass. He could often be seen pushing his prized Troy-Bilt lawnmower on sidewalks or through Lititz Springs Park.

Walker was renowned for striking up regular conversations with long-time residents of Lititz, remembering obscure details of a person's family and acquaintances despite not always remembering the name of the person he was speaking with. He was also a teller of tales, recalling the time he wrestled Victor, a 450-lb. bear at the former Tastee-Freez in Lititz, or racing BMX bikes in the 1980s.
A creature of habit, Walker enjoyed smoking his Newport 100 cigarettes, drinking coffee at Dosie Dough or enjoying a beer at the Lititz VFW.
Born in Reidsville, N.C., he was the son of the Paul Walker of Virginia and the late Hazel “Christine” Keller of Lititz.
Surviving are his nieces, Sandy Cook, Crystal Walker, Tonya Snyder, Sheena Farver and Cayli Getz and his nephews, Dale Miller, Justin Thomas, Chris Walker and Austin Walker, He was preceded in death by his sisters, Teresa Walker and Vickie Getz, and his brother, Randy Walker.
