Eartha Lee Conway - December 05, 1956 - March 12, 2021

Departed: 03/12/2021 (Salisbury)
Obituary Preview: Reflection of Her Life
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me at that day. II Timothy 4:7-8. A Time to Be Born
Eartha, the daughter of the late Perry Conway Jr. and Carrie Ellis Conway of Salisbury, Maryland, was born on December 5, 1956. She was the third of five siblings. On Friday, March 12, 2021, God in His infinite wisdom and compassion, sent His angels to the bedside of Eartha Lee Conway and ushered her to eternal rest. A Time to Grow
Eartha was affectionately called “Sissy” by her family. She grew up in a Christian home where her love of family and values were evident. Eartha’s Christian education first began at St. James AME Zion Church under the leadership of the late Charles Henry Mack. Eartha’s Christian journey continued, allowing her to grow spiritually by attending numerous churches until she found the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop James Eure. There, Eartha bloomed into a dedicated, determined child of the Highest God. Eartha had a thirst and a yearning to serve the Lord Jesus with all her heart, body and soul. Eartha was adamant about attending church and bible study. She loved to pray and recite prayers that would encompass poems that were most heartfelt. She read her bible faithfully and would talk about His goodness. Eartha became a bold witness for the Lord Jesus Christ. She loved her church and her Bishop, and would encourage others to join his ministry.
Eartha received her education in the Wicomico County School System, graduating from Wicomico High School in 1974. Upon graduation, she attended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Eartha accepted employment with the Holly Center in Salisbury where she worked for numerous years before her medical retirement. Her siblings could not understand why she chose to work with this population, but she was resolute about her love of people no matter what. She loved to serve and serve she did, recounting how her job was fulfilling and rewarding.
Eartha was kind, loving, intelligent, funny and made friends very easily. She never met anyone she considered a stranger…sometimes at her own peril…she always thought everyone was worthy of love and friendship. She would give you the shirt off of her back even when she was overlooked and yearned for friendships. Eartha possessed a great deal of strength and courage as she fought the good fight and she has now finished her course after enduring many health challenges. We did not know the level of pain she experienced on a daily basis. Eartha’s spirit never wavered, and she maintained a radiant smile that won over many hearts. She was warm, compassionate, fun loving, and always willing to go the extra mile for her family and friends, whom she loved dearly, to ensure their comfort and well-being. She was a talker, a people person and she held lengthy conversations that would make you laugh because of her wit. Eartha’s passing has left an unspeakable void in the hearts and minds of all those who spent time with her. A Time to Love
Eartha leaves to cherish her loving memories by her mother, Carrie Ellis Conway; son, Terry Fisher Jr. who was also her caregiver for many years; brother and caregiver, Tyrone Conway Sr.; three sisters, Dr. Francine Conway-Hayes (William)…Eartha loved William referring to him as ‘Billy Hayes’ and Billy loved Eartha, becoming her caregiver during the six years she resided in their home; Ms. Audrey Conway of Baltimore, MD who she enjoyed teasing and Ms. Tracy Fields of Virginia Beach VA who she often referred to as her “favorite sister”; two grandsons, Terontae Fisher of Salisbury MD and Dae’brezhon Fisher of Baltimore MD; great granddaughter, Riley Henry of Salisbury MD; two uncles, Henry Cornish of Wilmington DE and William (Joyce) Cornish of Salisbury, MD; one aunt, Helen Ellis of Salisbury, MD; three great aunts, Nettie Ann Bishop of Middletown, DE, Letha Wright of Salisbury, MD and Olivia Wright of Bridgeville, DE; nephew Tyrone Conway Jr.; two nieces, Brittany Lawrence of Chesapeake, VA and Caira Fields of Virginia Beach, VA; two special great nephews, Camryn Brown of Chesapeake, VA, Tymere Conway of Salisbury, MD; several great nieces, great nephews, cousins and extended family; special friends Tykeshia Chandler and her children, Jayden, Jazmyne, and Josiah (the love of her life) of Pocomoke MD, and Sherry White of Salisbury MD; and her Friendship Network Family, Charlotte Harrison and Alma Thomas both of Salisbury MD. A Time to Rejoice On Friday, March 12, 2021 Eartha heard the call and she was gently escorted to where healing waters flow. She was called into the “Newness of Life” with the grace that had sustained the old. Her illness was washed away in soothing currents of love. Can’t you see that smile on her face as she’s walking those streets paved with gold?

Otis W Downes - February 04, 1939 - November 15, 2020

Departed: 11/15/2020 (Salisbury)
Obituary Preview: Otis Washington Downes, Jr. was born on February 4, 1939 in Salisbury, MD to the late Otis of Centreville, MD and Mattie Downes of Dames Quarters, MD. Otis, Jr, 81, of Delmar, MD died on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at Genesis Nursing and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, MD.
Otis was educated through the public-school system in Wicomico County until he quit school to help care for his mother and sister. He later studied, achieved, and received his GED. Otis was a man who did not mind hard work. Hard work was indeed a hallmark of his being. This fact is underscored by the diverse/varied career path he pursued during his life. His first job was at Campbell Soup where he learned, developed, and fine-tuned the basic work skills of getting the job, maintaining the job, and advancing to the next job. He then worked at the Peninsula General Hospital in various capacities which positioned him for his next line of work. Otis worked at an electrical store for a period that served to introduce him to the career path of electrical supplies and sales. He obtained his first job as an electrical supply consultant/specialist at Artcraft, working in the warehouse.
There he learned all about electrical supplies. Otis was a sponge, taking everything in that he learned from his supervisor which resulted with him later being employed at Westinghouse as the first black electrical salesman on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He left Westinghouse and sent to work for Coffman Electric in Pittsville, MD. Otis later took those same salesman skills, left the electrical world, and started working for the Wicomico County Liquor Board, retiring after more than 25 years of service. Otis had several part-time jobs during his career. He worked for English Grill and Royal Exchange Pub sharing his love for cooking.
As a young man, Otis loved sports, especially basketball. Otis is remembered fondly as the coach of several Men’s Basketball Teams representing McDonalds and Wesley Temple. Otis led the team to two championships. Otis’ favorite team were the Los Angeles Lakers (basketball), and New York Giants (basketball). You could see him often riding around town wearing a Lakers or Giant hat or jersey.
Otis was a former member of the Masons Shiners and the NAACP, as well as a lifetime member of the Salvation Army Boys Club.
When Otis gave his life to Christ, he attended his mother’s home church in Dames Quarters, MD before joining Mills Memorial. Dad was known for his attention to his attire, always dressing up in a suit and matching hat when attending church. He loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Mills Memorial Church in Salisbury, MD until he was unable to attend service due to his illness.
Otis enjoyed listening to music while in his car driving around reminiscing about the past and present. One of his favorite places to travel to was New York City. He often shared those memories with his children. He also enjoyed cooking and did not hesitate in telling you how to properly cook something. He always had love and a story for everyone he met. Otis employment for the most part kept him in the public, so he was known around town by many, and he enjoyed taking to everyone. So, once he retired, he did not let that stop him. Otis had a daily run to Walmart North in Salisbury. He knew all the salespeople, especially at the Pharmacy area. You would find him there daily walking or riding around in the cart stopping and carrying on a conversation with anyone that would stop and talk to him. We know it was more talking than shopping. Now be careful, Otis loved to talk, so you had to ready to stand and listen to the stories that he would tell, sharing his life experiences.
He is survived by his four children, Vanessa M. Downes of Fort Washington, MD, Debbie Smiley (Michael), Jaenell Downes (Kathy) both of Salisbury, MD, and Jessica Downes Taylor (Van), of Delmar, MD. He also leaves a nephew whom he loved dearly, Otis W. Downes (Willow Mae) of Salisbury, MD, a daughter-in-law, Cindy Downes, and Grandchildren Dawn Mitchell, Lamont Downes, Jade Maria Collins, Marcus Smiley, Ashley Gattis, and Van Taylor Jr., and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his Ex-wife Wanda Downes, and a very special friend Lisa Gonzales.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Gregory Downes, and his sister Diane Downes.
For those who desire a program or wish to drop off a card to the family, visitation hour will be Saturday, December 19th from 10-10:45AM. A private memorial service (by invitation only) will follow at 11AM. If you are unable to drop off a card, you may mail the card to Mills Memorial Baptist Temple, c/o The Downes Family, P.O. Box 4596, Salisbury, MD 21803.

Edward Theodore Taylor - February 27, 1932 - May 30, 2020

Departed: 05/30/2020 (Salisbury)
Obituary Preview: Edward Theodore Taylor, age 88, was a distinguished educator, public servant, and consummate family man. He was born on February 27th, 1932 during the Depression era in a wooden farmhouse in the tranquil, waterway community of Wetipquin, Maryland. He was one of nine children born to Victoria Bailey Taylor and Edward Jerome Taylor.
After completing his elementary education in a two-room schoolhouse in Wetipquin, he went on to attend Salisbury High School, graduating in 1948. Following graduation, he worked as a lumberjack for two years before being drafted into the United States Army on December 1, 1951. At age nineteen, he began thirty-two weeks of boot camp and combat ranger training at Scholfield Barracks in Hawaii. His experience as a combat infantry ranger, who served nine months of brutal conflict on the frigid battlefields of Korea, dramatically shaped his life. He had witnessed the violent deaths and injuries of 249 members of his squad. Ed was one of only six survivors. For his service in combat, he received a Bronze star, but upon his return home, despite his stellar service, he confronted blatant racial discrimination.
In 1954, following his tour of duty in Korea, Ed enrolled at Bowie State Teacher’s College, where he excelled academically and socially, becoming the president of the student body in his senior year. One day while sitting in Bowie’s Blue Room at a social gathering, he noticed, in his words, “a beautiful, young-looking girl walking toward us. She had the prettiest smile that I had ever seen, and she was small but built to perfection.” This lovely young woman was Doretta Jones, whom he would marry in 1956. They would have three children, and he would spend the rest of his years with her.
After graduation in 1959, Ed secured a teaching position at Ross Street Elementary School in Snow Hill, Maryland and moved with his wife and children to Salisbury. While teaching at Ross Street, he enrolled in Salisbury State College in 1961 to earn his Master’s equivalency in Education. In 1970, he began teaching at the newly-integrated Snow Hill Middle School. He later obtained employment closer to Salisbury and became Vice-Principal at Mardela High School. In 1978, he received a second degree from Salisbury University—a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision. In 1988, Ed joined the Pupil Personnel Team at the Wicomico County Board of Education, where he served until 1994 when he and Doretta retired jointly from the public school system.
Immediately after retirement, Ed entered politics and served three four-year terms as Wicomico County Councilman, having won his first election by 73 percent of the votes. During his tenure, his accomplishments ranged from working to reduce incarceration to improving education for homeless children. Ed aspired to improve the lives of all citizens in the county.
In 1996, upon return from the Million Man March in Washington, DC, Ed formed the not-for-profit organization “100 Good Men” and became its first president. Comprised of a cadre of volunteer men and women, the organization provided mentors and tutors to Wicomico County youth. Its after-school program included life skills training and cultural enrichment. In 2001, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore honored Councilman Taylor with the Frank H. Morris Humanitarian Award for his lifelong contribution to children and community uplift.
In 2006, Ed began his foray into writing and published his memoir of the Korean War Just God and Me: A Korean War Veteran Remembers. He would go on to publish two more books—another memoir titled Up From the Strawberry Patch, which chronicles his journey from Wetipquin to the Wicomico County Council Chamber, and a novella On Yonder’s End.
Always interwoven into Ed’s life was his love of family—his immediate family and his large extended family of grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews. As a natural born teacher, he contributed immensely to his own children’s education through the routine sharing of history, speeches, family lore, and poems, and he spearheaded summer vacations for his family to points as far north as Canada and as far south as Florida. Always calm, good-humored, and endearing to his grandchildren, Ed shared words of wisdom and provided guidance in a way that demonstrated his profound and abiding love for all of them. Ed also shared his favorite leisurely activities of fishing and boating with his children, all of whom he taught how to bait a hook, cast a line, pull an anchor, and clean a cooler of fresh perch and rock fish. After his 1994 retirement, he began his career as a sea captain, earning his captain’s license. Regularly, he carried out fishing parties of family, close friends and neighbors, and colleagues. For “Captain Ed,” maneuvering his fishing cruiser through the brackish waters of the Nanticoke River—whether with a fishing party, with one or two of his fishing buddies, or with his son—was in his words, “freedom!”
Ed Taylor experienced his greatest moment of freedom when he transitioned from this life on May 30, 2020. Left to celebrate his life and honor his legacy are his wife of 64 years, Doretta “Duck” Jones Taylor; three children—Yvette Taylor, Tulani “Debbie” Salahu-Din, Edward Tyrone “Tiger” Taylor (Amy); three sisters—Elva Robinson, Christine Williams, and Victoria Jones; six grandchildren—Diana Hachoose, Janna Amin, Donovan Taylor, Mikayla Amin, Briana Taylor, and Angelina Hachoose; and three great grandchildren—Nasir Amin Kangalee, Ninah Amin, and Meyari Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and dear friends.
Some Affiliations During His Lifetime: Lifelong member of Friendship Methodist Church in Wetipquin, Maryland, Member of the American Legion, Member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW), Secretary of the Board of Directors of SHORE UP! Inc., President of the Wicomico County NAACP, Deputy Sheriff, State Police Advisory Board, Board of Directors, Maple Shade, Board of Directors, Teen Adult Center, and Board of Directors, Wicomico County Economic Development.

Mom Franc loved Christmas. She and her son “Rol” (Roland, Keith) would spend days shopping for every one of her children, grandchildren, great and great-great grands. She also gave gifts to her extended family and some of her church family. Her home was always decorated top-notch at Christmas every year. It was a time; she made sure that you knew how special you were to her. She emphasized how everyone should “love more.”
“Mom Franc” was a collector of dolls. If you entered her home, you would see the many dolls that surrounded each room. If you were extra special, you just may open a gift from her which included a doll. She had dolls of all nationalities. “Mom Franc” was truly unique! During her terminal illness she shared step-by- step with her daughters who cared for her, the process she was going through. She always took time to tell them and the Hospice Care nurses and assistant nurses, how much she loved and appreciated all they did to care for her. “Mom Franc” planned her own Home going Service; she selected her attire, most of her Pallbearers and asked each if he would serve in that position, she also invited different ones to attend also. She made many laugh and some left with tears as she shared words of wisdom and encouragement with them. This woman was amazing through it all! Her Final Words to ALL: "LOVE MORE"
Her children called her blessed. She fought a good fight, she finished her course, she kept the faith, (she never cursed God nor anyone during her sickness, but she cried out to God in prayer to take her home), and He heard her cry, dispatched His Angel to come for her; now she is with the LORD, the Righteous Judge, who shall give her a Crown of Righteousness on that day.
The family wishes to thank Coastal Hospice and their staff for the compassionate care given to our Mom. We also extend a very special thanks to the Morris family for their abundance of love and support. Her Final Words to All were: “LOVE MORE"
