Dixie Zahorik - February 22, 1952 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Dixie Jo Zahorik, 72, of Lisbon, Iowa passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Dixie was born on February 22, 1952, in Paragould, Arkansas. She could be described as nothing less than southern royalty and a beautiful little girl. In one of her favorite childhood portraits, she is poised elegantly in a sparkling blue dress holding a single rose - wearing the same smile that others recognized all her life. Dixie’s beauty was and is timeless.
Dixie loved music from a young age and had an amazing singing voice. After moving to Iowa at age 14, she went on to attend Cornell College for her vocal ability. Dixie’s love of music carried on throughout her life and her family can remember watching musicals, operas, and of course listening to the classics with her.
One always learned an immense amount of history beyond what was shown in the movies or decipherable through music from her many stories. That talent for storytelling went much further than the music. Dixie had a way of telling a story that painted a picture so vivid that you felt you were right there with her. She had a way of personalizing every detail of her experiences and was not afraid to share her wisdom and memories with others. Dixie would tell stories about her early life in Arkansas or her life in Iowa and break into the most wonderful laughter - the kind that made you want to laugh with her, not just because she was hilarious (and she was!), but because her laughter was beautifully contagious. Dixie was well known for her humor and ability to turn any conversation into an opportunity to smile.
Dixie loved spending time with family and her wonderful husband of 38 years, John Zahorik. An immensely empathic and caring person, many considered her a second mother and a faithful confidant. She loved and cared for anything and everything. Walk into Dixie’s home or garden and see her amazing ability for nurturing plants - she could name the species of every plant. Dixie also loved animals and cared for many beloved pets over the years. Dixie loved her collections and had an elaborate curation of unique hummingbirds and elephants as well as a talent for crafting.
Dixie is survived by her loving husband, John; mother, JoAnn Finch; siblings, Julie Brown, Suzie Davis, and Adam Davis (Brett Mauk); daughter, Jennifer Brown (Kyle Ditch); her grandchildren, Kyla Boddicker (Chase), Jared Zahorik, Brett Zahorik, and Jake Zahorik; Dixie is also survived by honorary daughter, Danielle Huber; her dear friends, Galeen and Lawrence Kamberling, Maureen Petrick, and Kate Martin; she is also survived by her nieces/nephew, Chelsea Jamison (Rich), Gretchen Tedrow (Kirk), and Brett Brown; and grandnieces/nephews Lily May Brown, Allison Meyer (Seth), Lui Brown, Jonah Brown, Avery Tedrow, and Finley Tedrow.
Dixie was surrounded by family, friends, and her husband John when she passed away. Ultimately, the number of lives that Dixie influenced and the number of people who consider her family is insurmountable. Dixie’s memory will continue on through the many people who love her.

Brianna Sauer - May 21, 1984 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Brianna Sauer, 39, of Mechanicsville, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her home on April 6, 2024, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Celebration of Life: Saturday, April 13, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon, Iowa.
Brianna Dawn Hunt was born on May 21, 1984, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Mark and Kathryn Hunt.
A big part of her childhood was spent at the campground her grandparents Larry and Gloria owned south of Tipton, Iowa. The campground was a family affair where every weekend she got to hang out and work with her aunts, uncles, and cousins, who became more like siblings. It would be at the campground where she would meet her future husband, Adam Sauer. The high school sweethearts married on July 8, 2006, on a very hot day. Brianna and Adam went on to have two beautiful daughters.
Brianna’s greatest passion in life was helping kids. As a para-educator at North Cedar Elementary School in Mechanicsville, she had a positive impact on the lives of countless students. She served the children in the community as a member of the Mechanicsville Library board. She also was a constant driving force in her kids’ lives, supporting them in every endeavor. She took every opportunity to volunteer and coach no matter what the sport. Even during chemo and radiation she still coached softball and never missed a game. When the kids moved into middle school and high school sports, she did her best to make it to every game, home or away. She was proud of the women her daughters were becoming, they were the light of her life.
Brianna and her sister, Kiley, have always been very close, getting together with their kids whenever possible. This was often at their parents’ home, where a walk in the creek was a favorite activity for her. All these occasions were thoroughly preserved by the hundreds of photos Bri loved to take. This is evident by the many albums and scrapbooks she carefully organized.
Brianna will be remembered for her generous heart and spirit and her beautiful, bright smile.
Brianna is survived by her parents, Mark and Kathryn Hunt; husband, Adam Sauer; children, Morgan and Adison Sauer; sister, Kiley (Clay) Koenig; half-brother, Matt Panko; great grandmother, Dorthy Wolfe; grandmother, Gloria Hunt; grandparents, Robert and Audrey Rothmeyer; mother and father-in-law, Jack and Ann Sauer; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Brianna was preceded in death by her grandfather, Larry Hunt.
A General Memorial Fund has been established in care of Adam Sauer.

Viola Pospisil - November 29, 1931 - February 10, 2024

Departed: 02/10/2024 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Viola Pospisil passed away on February 10, 2024, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her family gathered physically and virtually to celebrate her and to be by her side as she peacefully slipped into rest. She would have considered this to be one of her very best days.
Visitation: 9:30-11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 15, 2024, St. John’s Catholic Church, Mount Vernon, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the church with luncheon to follow. Burial: Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, Iowa.
Viola Lorraine Miller was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on November 29, 1931, to parents Michael Joseph Miller and Rose Monica Stanek Miller. She placed last in a long line of siblings and was arguably the most spoiled (Mom would certainly argue!) and cutest (Mom would not argue!). According to Vi, she enjoyed a wonderful childhood, although hard work was required with a big family to feed on the proceeds from a small truck farm.
Vi was smart as a whip. She attended Shueyville High School where she played girls’ basketball and graduated in 1948 at the age of sixteen. As her children, we always enjoyed accompanying her to her class reunions and loved to hear of the funny business and high jinks she enjoyed in her young life. We were not surprised a bit.
In 1947, Vi attended a dance at the C.S.P.S. hall. There she met a young war veteran, Bennie Wesley Pospisil. From the sounds of things, they did not exactly hit it off at first. Dad, though, was highly determined and persuasive and won her heart fully and forever in the end. They were married at Saint Wenceslaus Church in Cedar Rapids, IA, on February 8, 1949.
Both Bennie and Vi were raised as farm kids. They were not afraid to commit themselves to their marriage and the hard work and sacrifice their dreams would require. They were eventually blessed with their three children, Kenny, Linda, and Gregg. They raised them to be faithful, honest, and hard-working. Family came first and respect and discipline were to be expected.
Vi somehow found time…for Dad, for us, for so many, many things. Mom was simply a doer. Vi was a life-long member of the Catholic Church, where she faithfully attended Mass with her family. She was a long-time member of the Linn Ladies Club north of town and joined in all the social fun they dreamed up. She was a member and officer of the American Legion Auxiliary where she was named a Gold Star Sister and could always be seen at the National Poppy Day sale decked out in red, white, and blue with matching shoes. When Grandma Miller entered Hallmark Care Center, Mom began her long volunteer service there, where she worked with staff to ensure residents’ rights and dignity were preserved. Most of all, she was kind and had a ready smile for each person there. Mom was full of talent and curiosity. To us she was the kolache, strudel, houska, and rosette making queen. On top of all that, she actually enjoyed gardening and felt true satisfaction when she could see the fruits of her canning crazies lining her pantry walls. She loved life on the farm and helping Dad in every way she could, where she kept meticulous records of everything and every dollar spent and received, driving the tractor in their fields, and making hot meals to drive out to the harvesting crew. She crocheted beautiful doilies, wore silly costumes, and made the best darn meals. She was just everything, and she made it look so easy.
Vi is survived by her children, Kenneth Pospisil (Jane), Linda McNeal, and Gregory Pospisil (Robin); grandchildren, Braden JP Rood (Anton), Sean McNeal (Gennifer), Benjamin Pospisil (Megan), Jennifer Woods (Keith), Joshua Pospisil (Erin), and Jacob Pospisil (Breannon); great-grandchildren, Jasper, Atticus, and Chester Rood, Jalen, Kia, and Brendon McNeal, Trystin and Aly Lashley, Benjamin II and Alaina Pospisil, Lydia Woods, and Whitney Woods Fernandez (Abe), Avery Pospisil, and Laine and Silas Pospisil; great-great-grandchildren, Liliana and Gianna Fernandez; and her beloved nieces and nephews.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings, Ernest, Monica, Stanley, Marianne, Beatrice, Blanche, and Bohumil (Benjamin); and beloved son-in-law, Dan McNeal.
Vi was, and will continue to be, a true gift to her family. She gave quietly and generously of everything she had. She made us feel loved and accepted. She was wonderful, and we are proud and honored to call her ours.
Our sincere Thank You goes out to the people and agencies who have helped and guided us through the last steps of Mom’s journey: Mercy Care Mount Vernon, Hallmark Care Center, Lisbon Rehabilitation Center, the Mercy Hospital ICU unit, and the caring, healing staff there, the staff and congregation of Saint John the Baptist Church, and our much-loved family and friends who have kept us supported by your prayers and your presence. May you all somehow know how much we appreciate every gesture, and every prayer.

Mary Beth Payne - September 12, 1970 - February 08, 2024

Departed: 02/08/2024 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Mary Beth Spencer Payne, 53, of Lisbon, Iowa, passed away, on Thursday, February 8th, 2024, after a short battle from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). She is survived by her husband, Sean Payne; brothers, Scott Spencer and Steve Spencer; children, Austin Priborsky, Bailey Spahr, Allison Payne, Alexis Payne, and Ryder Gillespie; and two grandchildren, Anya Cleveland and Montana Meyer. These are among the many that live to carry her memory, from all of the laughing moments to all of the hearts that were blessed by her presence.
Mother, Best Friend, Wife. There are only so many words that you can use to try to define her, but in doing so, it is impossible to catch everything that made her Mary Beth. Mother. To say that she created and maintained a loving environment and home is, to say the least, about her. She was a mother to five grateful children; there is no way that this love will not continue with her children’s children. Best Friend. Her humor and personality were infectious; everywhere she would go, she could make a friend, make someone laugh, or support them in their hardest times. We know that her memory is strong in all of these connections that made the wonderful web of her personal life. Wife. Perhaps one of the most important relationships in her life. She poured all of her love, care, and affection into her partner, Sean Payne. This man and her family were with her through the roughest period in her life. The love she gave, the relationships she made, and the care she had, all paid forward to this moment where a diverse community came together to comfort and care for her in the last year.
For those who have had the experience of losing someone from any sort of disease, we know that illness is a killer and a thief. We lose loved ones and friends too soon; we see how illness can steal away time and lives. What we also know is that the impact and love that was given cannot be taken. In everything that her friends and family do, we will see little pieces of Mary Beth shine brightly. A gentle reminder that she changed so many people; a reminder that she will never truly be gone. While those who remain will feel like they have lost a loved one, we know that there will come a day when a smile will cross their face at a memory of her. They didn’t just survive but will find that their life thrived from this beautiful soul, gone too soon.
Even in the end, Mary Beth kept a smile on her face and was concerned that people were giving too much. She knew that everyone who was there to help was doing so because of the love they had for her. And to those who didn’t know about her condition, she did not love them less; she wanted you all to remember her laugh, joy, and life as it was before. The loss of a family member is hard; let Mary’s memory be a reminder that there is always time to reach out and tell your loved ones how much they mean.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Mary Beth on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 11:00-2:00 p.m., at the Tin Roof in Lisbon, Iowa. Instead of any flowers or donations, the family asks that all proceeds be donated to the ASLA Foundation to support other families that are going through similar situations. There will be a benefit in her honor on April 6, 2024, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. also at the Tin Roof. There will be a silent auction and gathering. Proceeds will go to the family.

Marilyn Kohl - February 17, 1939 - January 12, 2024

Departed: 01/12/2024 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: On January 12, 2024, Marilyn June (Blood) Kohl, formerly of Lisbon, Iowa, Huntsville, Missouri, Windsor, Missouri, and most recently, Arden Hills, Minnesota, took her leave of this world to enter the loving arms of Jesus. All who knew Marilyn during her 84 years of life knew how deeply she loved her Lord, her husband, her family, and her friends. Those friends are innumerable, as Marilyn possessed a gift for immediately making others feel as if she'd known them for years, even if she'd just met them. Marilyn's life was a rich tapestry of experiences and relationships.
Marilyn was born on February 17, 1939, to Bob and Lucille Blood of Lisbon, Iowa, the first-born of their four children. Marilyn would grow to spend a lifetime loving and helping children, beginning with her younger siblings (Jim, Vera, and Dennis), moving on to her own six children, and reaching out to include any child within her church, family, or community who captured or needed her attention. Even within her hazy, incoherent final days, holding a great-grandchild allowed her to regain the clarity of mind to sing "Jesus Loves Me" from deep within her soul. There can never be any doubt that Jesus, and Marilyn, loved children.
While a schoolgirl in Lisbon, Iowa, Marilyn met and eventually married the love of her life, Delmar Lee Kohl, on September 25, 1957. Together, they celebrated 60 joy-filled years, marked by mutual respect, deep affection, and service to the Lord. While their life together focused on farming and raising a passel of kids, Marilyn branched out to find other interests to fill her time when their nest emptied. Her love of flowers drew her to work in a local Windsor, Missouri greenhouse for several years, and her love for people compelled her to volunteer in local nursing homes. Much of Marilyn's happiness and contentment in life lay in the enjoyment of simple pleasures - the sight of butterflies and birds, the tranquility of flowers and her favorite color blue, and the sweetness of a well-earned treat or the delight of creating one for others.
Marilyn's life was not just defined by the love she shared with Delmar but also by the extensive family they nurtured together. She leaves behind a legacy through her children: Samuel Lee (Suzanne), Daniel Ernest (Mindy), Anna Marie (Scott) Brueske, Dr. Andrew Ray (Susan), Nathanael Earl (Lori), and Jacob Lloyd (Paula) Kohl. Her spirit continues to resonate in the lives of her 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, each embodying a facet of her loving nature.
Marilyn loved wholeheartedly and had so much pride and joy in her large family. She loved to recite everyone's names, in order, with their spouses and children's names. She rarely missed a beat. As dementia took a stronger hold, she resorted to writing down the names and birth dates over and over, as she was determined to not lose touch with her life's most prized possessions. That love of family, combined with a love for her Savior, created a tremendous prayer warrior.
Marilyn also loved music and did what she could to encourage that love within her children, especially if it meant using those musical talents to tell the story of Jesus. She loved to sing, spontaneously bursting into song at the drop of a hat. She could sing countless children's songs and hymns from memory, even when that memory was greatly hampered by dementia. The songs of faith carried her through those final hours, into the arms of her Savior. When all else failed, worship remained an involuntary act for her.
A celebration of Marilyn's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon, Iowa. Visitation, for family and friends will commence prior to the service from 9:30-11:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest at Lisbon Cemetery, beside her beloved husband, Delmar.
Those unable to attend are invited to watch the service via live stream. Please find the live stream link on Marilyn’s tribute wall and share your support and memories with her family at www.stewartbaxter.com under obituaries.
