Obituary Preview: Sonya Lynn Stephens, 59, of Catlettsburg, was born April 30, 1963, in Xenia, Ohio and passed gently into eternal peace on Saturday, July 2, 2022, in King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was reunited in Heaven with her parents, Perry and Joyce Miller Shope; and two brothers, Jeff and Keith Shope. The most important thing in Sonya’s life was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Sonya touched the lives of everyone she met and her absence will be felt by many. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 44 years, J.R. Obituary Preview: Joy Taylor Sutton, 89, of Ashland, died peacefully on Monday, May 16, 2022, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.
She was born in Brownwood, Texas on January 6, 1933, the only child of the late James William Taylor and Mollie Meade Taylor. In addition to her parents, her loving husband of 54 years, Shirl Sutton preceded her in death. Joy was a 1950 graduate of Boyd County High School. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and retired following a long career in administration with Ashland Oil, Inc.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirleen (Paul) Maynard; her son, William T. Sutton; grandchildren, Molly Maynard, Valerie Cassio, and Brookley Maynard; two great grandchildren, Caitlyn and Kekela; and her beloved dog Bambi.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2022 at STEEN FUNERAL HOME 13TH STREET CHAPEL with Rev. John Carwell officiating. Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Obituary Preview: Jason Nicholas Brown, 41 of Rush, Kentucky entered into his Heavenly home on April 16, 2022, at King's Daughters Medical Center after an extended illness. Jason was born May 1, 1980, in Ashland, Kentucky the son of Donald Lee and Brenda Kay Sperry Brown of Catlettsburg. In addition to his parents he is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Melissa Kouns Brown who was his best friend and the love of his life; a sister, Jennifer Akers and her husband, Philip of Ashland Kentucky; four nephews, Garrett Arnett, Jason Kouns, Nathan Akers, and Wyatt Kouns; three nieces, Lila Kouns, Nola Akers, and Maya Harris; two great nieces and nephews, Myles Andrew and Lola Claire Kouns and Averi Blayke and Hayden James Arnett. Jason known to most as uncle Big Jay or uncle Day really loved all of his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed playing with them: He was a big kid at heart and enjoyed playing video games and having a good time. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends too many to mention who all loved him dearly. Two special fur babies HeidiJo and Macy who miss him at home. Jason's true passion was for music. He loved to play guitar and bass with his family, especially with his dad. Jason was a 1998 graduate of Boyd County High School where he participated in just about every type of band that was offered. He always said that his time in the band was some of the greatest times of his life. Jason was a very kind, loving, funny and intelligent person and he is so terribly missed by all who knew him. We don't know of anyone who truly disliked him, he was one of a kind. Jason attended and belonged to Straight Creek Nazarene Church when he was able to attend, he loved to play guitar and sing in church. Jason had a long struggle with health problems but still tried to make everyone smile which is what made him so special. Funeral services will begin a 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2022, at STEEN FUNERAL HOME 13TH STREET CHAPEL with Pastors Randy Biggs and Dan Bridges officiating. Obituary Preview: Lewis Buford Mays, 89, of Flatwoods, returned to his Heavenly Father, Sunday evening, April 10, 2022, while surrounded by his family at his residence. He was born February 10, 1933, in South Point, Ohio, a son of the late Lewis and Bess Sexton Mays. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia “Jenny” Mays; sons, Devon Mays and infant son, Steven Mays; grandson, Steve Mays; son in law, Bill Dalton; step sons, David Kersey, Roger Kersey and Greg Kersey; and a sister, Judy Willis. Lewis was a member of God’s Tabernacle Church and retired from Armco Steel following a 42 ½-year career. He previously served on the Flatwoods City Council and was a Boyd County Auxiliary Police Officer under Judge Hall. Lewis was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. Danny was born June 29, 1945, in Ashland, Kentucky to the late, William H. and Lula Caudill Blanton; in addition to his parents, his son in law, Jon Johnson; brothers, James, Bill, Drexel and “Red” Blanton; and sisters, Joann, Genoa, Frances and Leatha preceded him in death. Danny was a 1963 graduate of Ashland High School. He was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church where he served on the finance committee. He previously served as a deacon and R.A. Leader at Rose Hill Baptist Church and girls’ soccer and basketball coach at Rose Hill Christian School. Danny worked at the Catlettsburg Refinery with Local 3505 and was Chairman of the Workman’s Committee for 20 years. He was an avid UK Basketball fan who enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Evelyn Fleming Blanton; daughter, Trisha Dawn Johnson; two grandsons, Michael Blake Johnson and Dallas Brumfield; brother, Gary (Victoria) Blanton; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. Obituary Preview: Surrounded by family, Benjamin Peter Thompson, 23, of Ashland died after a brief illness February 9, 2022, at Kings Daughters Medical Center. Ben was born August 6, 1998, in Ashland, Kentucky, the youngest son of W. Scott and Tomie Hyer Thompson. Preceded in death by paternal grandfather H.B. Thompson of Flatwoods; paternal grandmother Elizabeth Bartlett Thompson of Ashland; maternal grandparents George Edward “Pete” and Shirley Smith Hyer of Orlando, Florida, he is survived by his parents, brother Colton Thompson of Catlettsburg, Mamaw Juanita Thompson of Flatwoods, aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, countless cousins and many friends.   Ben graduated in 2017 from Russell High School, where he was played on the varsity baseball team culminating in the 2017 63rd District Championship. In the off season, he played for the K.C. Diamond Bats, a traveling baseball team.   A practical jokester with a huge heart and quick, infectious smile, Ben was an avid outdoorsman with sharpshooter skills. He was often found on his grandparents’ farms near Louisa, where he hunted, fished, hiked and 4-wheeled with his parents and numerous cousins and friends, bringing home many a deer and lifelong memories.   Ben was a deputy jailer at the Boyd County Detention Center, where he enjoyed the tight comradery of his many coworkers. He understood how impactful his important role was to the lives of those incarcerated and treated everyone with dignity and respect. Deputy Thompson, Badge 753, your watch has ended. We are forever grateful and forever heartbroken.   Pallbearers will include cousins Sean Stapleton, David Stapleton, Kevin VanHoose and Robert Hupp, and Sgt. Zachery Sowards and Deputy. C.J. Caudill. The family would like to thank the hospital’s doctors, nurses and staff, all of whom were extraordinarily professional and caring.   Visitation services will be at Steen 13th Street Chapel on Monday, February 14, 2022, from 5-8pm. The chapel will host the funeral services at 1pm Tuesday, February 15, 2022, followed by burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Ellizabeth Easterling Cox Dobyns or “Miss Libby” as she was known to her family and friends, went to her home in Heaven on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at the age of 103. She was born in Grayson, KY, on December 6, 1918 to her parents, the late Dennis and Clara Goble Easterling. They moved to Ashland in 1920. They started attending church at Unity Baptist. Libby became a member in 1931 and was the oldest in membership and age. She loved her church and being involved. She attended Ashland Schools and as soon as she was old enough, she went to work at Murphy’s Store for five years and then to Armco Steel where she retired following 31 years of service. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Virginia Lewis, Ellen Jane Hogan and Opal Spurlock; niece, Clara Jane Wilson; two husbands, Raleigh Cox and Boyd Dobyns; and step sons, Kenley and Clifford Dobyns. She is survived by a nephew, David (Nellie) Castle and a host of nieces and nephews, her three angels, Teresa Salyers, Krisie Thompson, and Terri Hammond; special ladies, Jeanne Altherr and Susan Lykins. Hester worked for many years at White Swan Laundry in Ashland. Although, her greatest joy came from being a homemaker. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved cooking and providing for her family. Don was an ordained Minister in the Church of God. He was a member of Meade Station Church of God where he had previously served as Youth Minister. He previously served as Pastor of Grayson Church of God, Associate Pastor of Trinity Church of God and Interim Pastor of Lowmansville Church of God. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley Meade Young of Ashland; daughters, Sheri Henry (Scott) of Catlettsburg, and Missy Young-Salyers (Mark) of Ashland; brothers, Bob Young and Dean Young of Ashland; sister, Diane Kersey of Ashland; grandchildren, Conner Goble, Chase Goble, Caleb (Bobbi) Henry, Caroline Henry and Grace Conley; as well as a host of extended family members and dear friends. He was born August 12, 1932, in Greenup County, Kentucky, to the late Thomas and Lucinda Moore Crisp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Ann Wilson Crisp; son, Dennie Alford “Bud” Crisp, Jr., step-son, David Greene and 11 siblings. Dennie was a member of Cannonsburg Church of Christ and was the owner of Crisp Service Center for 61 years. He was a talented musician. He opened shows for Mel Tillis, Loretta Lynn, Little Jimmy Dickens and many others. He performed at Coalton Jubilee, Sunshine Valley, Wright Shopping Center, Rockdale Jubilee and traveled overseas to perform for the U.S.O. He once beat Patsy Cline in a talent contest. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nellie Sparks Crisp; sons, Ronald (Teresa) Crisp and Rodney Crisp; daughters, Jody (Joe) Whitlock and Amber (Luke) Martin; step-daughter, Tammi Greene Walters; grandchildren, Shasta Stephens, Sarah McPeek, Samantha McDavid, Seth Whitlock, Brandon Crisp, Brittany Leader, Ryan Crisp, Chelsea Seagraves and Jessica Hart; step-grandsons, Joshua David Greene and Nicholas Greene; 19 great grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
