Joan Bell Newton - February 08, 1932 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Fallston)
Obituary Preview: Joan “JoAnn” Bell Campbell Newton, 92, of Casar, moved to her home in Heaven on April 25, 2024 after almost a year’s residence at Peak Resources in Cherryville.
Born in Cleveland County on February 8, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Alvin “Rush” Campbell and Vernie Heafner Campbell.
Joan was a 1951 graduate of Polkville High School. Following graduation, she worked as a seamstress at Hudson Hosiery Mill in Shelby. On February 22, 1953, she married Jack Hoover Newton. After the birth of her two children, Joel and Alisa, she became a home-maker and stay-at-home-mom. She always worked hard to help provide for her family by planting, tending, and harvesting a huge garden from which she canned and froze an abundance of food each year.
While her son, Joel, was a Cub Scout, Joan served as the Den Mother of the Casar Cub Scouts.
Once her children were in school, she added some part-time jobs to her workload. She was the custodian of Casar Methodist Church for many years, was a substitute worker in the cafeteria of Casar Elementary School, and was a substitute teacher in all the schools in Upper Cleveland County. She also volunteered much time transporting some of the elderly ladies in the community to their doctor appointments.
Joan was a long-time member of Casar Methodist Church where she enjoyed being an alto voice in the choir.
Mrs. Newton’s two main passions, family and food, consumed most of her time. She was a fabulous cook who could make the absolute best fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, roast beef. She was also an excellent baker of homemade biscuits, and lemon pound cake, among other things. She was very hospitable and made sure that anyone who came to her home was well-fed.
When her brother, Gary, became disabled, Joan spent many hours each week visiting him, picking up his groceries, and caring for him in general.
Because she devoted most of her time to family and food, she didn’t develop many other interests or hobbies which made it difficult for her to occupy her time once she became disabled and could no longer cook. But she did like to watch and listen to the singing of Joey and Rory Feek on TV and later on DVD.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Jack Hoover Newton, and all of her brothers and sisters: Gene Campbell, Montrose “Monty” Floyd, Christine Martin, Gary Campbell, and Carolyn McKee.
Joan is survived by a son, Joel Newton (Tammy) of Casar, and a daughter, Alisa Goad (Larry) of Shelby; seven grandchildren, Elliott Newton (Tonya), Carrie Timms (Josh), Winston McKee, Ian McKee, Avery McKee, Brooke Emory (Josh), Kristin Goad and fiance Darrell Endicott; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home on Monday, April 29, 2024 from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm.
A graveside service will be held at Casar Methodist Church Cemetery, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 2:00 with Reverend Van Spencer and Judy Ledford officiating.
Memorials may be made to VIA Health Partners founded as Hospice Cleveland County, 953 Wendover Heights Drive Shelby, NC 28150 or Casar Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, ℅ Inez Brackett, PO Box 55, Casar, NC 28020.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support during this difficult time.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any charitable organizations or causes that were close to their heart.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often limited to 200-300 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed. Ultimately, the goal is to provide a concise yet meaningful tribute to the deceased.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a wonderful way to personalize the obituary and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required) for publication.

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only the essential facts like name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to verify any copyright restrictions before publishing.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral or memorial service private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. This allows you to share news of your loved one's passing while maintaining privacy around the ceremony.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a cause that was important to them. Be sure to include relevant details about the charity and how donations can be made.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing with a wider audience. You can share a link to the published obituary or create your own post with relevant details.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove notices after a certain period. Be sure to check with the specific platform for their policies on archiving and retention.

What if I need additional support during this difficult time?

If you're struggling with grief or need emotional support during this challenging time, consider reaching out to a trusted friend, family member, counselor, or support group for help. There are also many online resources available specifically for bereaved individuals.
