Robert F. Kilbury - September 17, 1954 - October 18, 2023

Departed: 10/18/2023 (Sherman)
Obituary Preview: Robert F. Kilbury, 69 of Sherman, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at home surrounded by family. He was born in Little Rock, AR on September 17, 1954 to Merlin Kilbury, Jr. and Laura “Kay” Farabee Kilbury and they preceded him in death. Rob is survived by his daughter, Laura Elizabeth Kilbury of Washington, D.C.; his former wife and supportive friend, Gale Kilbury of Delavan; two brothers, Merlin (Corrine) Kilbury III of Tulsa, OK and David (Brenda) Kilbury of Hot Springs, AR; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rob lived life fearlessly, purposefully, independently, and with a good bit of fun. At the age of 27, he was hit by a drunk driver while riding his bike to work, paralyzing him. Rob was not to be deterred---there was too much life to live. Rob became a passionate advocate for people with disabilities, playing a critical role in the passage of the American Disabilities Act in Illinois and other pieces of legislation. After earning his Doctorate in Rehabilitation Policy from Southern Illinois University—Carbondale, Rob became the Director of the Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities in Illinois. He then worked for the Illinois Department of Human Services for many years as the Director of Rehabilitation Services.
From an early age, Rob was a lover of all sports. Rob grew up playing baseball with his brother David as the pitcher and older brother Merlin as their coach. He also enjoyed playing golf with his friends and brothers, earning a reputation as someone to watch on the course, otherwise you may be in danger. Rob was a strong skier, taking trips to Colorado throughout his childhood and young adult life to tear up the mountain. The week before his accident, he was skiing in Lake Tahoe with friends. His accident never stopped him from playing sports as he played competitive wheelchair basketball with the Rolling Razorbacks in Little Rock. Finally, Rob was a committed horse racing fan, traveling throughout the country to see the premier tracks and races and placing bets.
Still, Rob was most proud of being a father to Laura Beth. He loved to read to her, instilling a love of reading that they both shared. Rob and Laura played basketball together for many years in the driveway, and he rooted in the stands for nearly all of her games. He also loved taking road trips across the U.S. with Gale and Laura, and he always was the driver. Rob was proud that Laura had continued to work in progressive policy in D.C. as he remained an engaged citizen concerned with the state of this country, as rights continue to be rolled back.
His final message to all is to live life with enjoyment, but always stand up for those not at the table.
