Roger W. Ertel Sr. - March 11, 1936 - February 29, 2024

Departed: 02/29/2024 (Cincinnati)
Obituary Preview: Roger W Ertel Sr. March 11, 1936 - February 29, 2024 Roger Ertel, age 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family in the wee hours of the morning on February 29, 2024. Much to his dismay, he did not make it to age 90 like he'd always planned. However, making it to 87 was quite a feat considering his long and complicated list of medical diagnoses about which he loved to tell anyone and everyone. "These 9 Specialists are keeping me alive..."
Proceeded in death by his mom, Anna Mae, dad, Wilfrid 'Butch', brother Wally, and his beloved dog Harley.
He leaves behind his wife of 53 years Barb (nee Bernhard), children Roger Jr (Natasha), Matt (Michele) and Nicole, plus several Grand Dogs. Also survived by sisters Twila Stith, Georgia Cunningham, Robbie Jardine and brother Ronnie, as well as many brothers and sisters in-law and what seems to be hundreds of nieces and nephews.
Roger was born in Spades, Indiana in 1936 as the 2nd of 6 children. Their childhood home was located within a stones throw of a railroad track so each passing train shook the house and outhouse. Here began his appreciation of indoor plumbing. His exceptional work ethic started as a young boy by stocking shelves at the Ertel General Store owned by his grandparents and helping his dad with the huckster delivery truck.
Roger attended Sunman High School where he played baseball and basketball, and earned the nickname the 'Ace of Spades.' He was a stud that always had the coolest looking car, especially his '58 Pontiac Bonneville convertible. His self-acclaimed greatest accomplishment was not a life well-lived or his children, but his participation on the Ripley County All Star basketball team. This team featured Bobby Plump and other players from the famous '54 Milan Indians team, the basis for the movie Hoosiers. Roger's dedication to basketball paid off and in 2022 he was inducted into the Ripley County basketball Hall of Fame.
After graduating High School in 1954, he went to work at Fernald nuclear plant as a chemical operator. While at the plant, Roger joined the Army in 1958, stationed first in Oklahoma, and then Korea. His love of sports continued into adulthood where he played on local recreational teams and the Armed Services leagues. These games were played for fun and beers instead of trophies. After radioactive contamination was discovered, and the demise of Fernald began, Roger went to work at Monsanto in 1964 in Addyston, Ohio.
Roger married Barb in 1969 and first lived in Saylor Park before settling in Delhi in 1972. They had 3 children, Roger Jr, Matt and Nicole. Each summer, extended family flocked to Delhi for weekend-long pool parties. Roger hated the upkeep of a pool but loved having everyone over, even though Barb did all the work. As the kids got older, he taught the boys how to fix anything with an engine, and to always carry a knife. He tried to refine Nicole's free throw shot and teach her patience. All the kids obtained his appreciation for fishing and camping and anything that involved fixing or building stuff.
After 30 years of shift work he chose early retirement in 1995 at the age of 59. Roger thoroughly enjoyed his retirement and kept himself busy year-round. He and his fishing buddies referred to Brookville Lake in Indiana as the 'Dead Sea' so they had to find other fishing holes. He treasured small farm ponds and their annual winter trips to Reelfoot Lake and Lake Seminole. Summers were spent tending to the lawn and cutting the very straightest of rows with his beloved John Deere mower, as well as waging wars against weeds and moles. No matter the season, there was always some sport to watch on tv that he could 'coach' from his recliner.
Roger was a kind and gentle soul. He was a quiet man who would rather listen than talk, but boy if you got him talking about something he loved, there was no escaping him.
In his later years he turned to religion more. He prayed the rosary twice a day, also praying for 678 of his closest friends and family to ensure they avoided purgatory. If anyone deserves Heaven, it's Roger.
Roger didn't want a layout or funeral, so we leave you with this suggestion to pay your respects: sit quietly outside to watch the birds and squirrels, go fishing, tend to your yard, and make sure to eat some damn good fried chicken.
