Obituary Preview: Leon Carpenter, 71, of Rome, passed away unexpectedly on March 7th, 2022, at Rome Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 10th, 1950. Leon enjoyed being called Sailor, Elvis, or John Wayne. Leon was very friendly and loved singing and talking about music, especially Elvis Presley's music. He enjoyed dancing, going on outings, and watching Western’s. Recreation and socialization were important to Leon. It made him happy to get out to eat at restaurants and go on picnics. Some of his favorite places to eat were McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Denny's, Wendy's, and Boyz from Italy. He especially enjoyed King Pin Bowling, The Baseball Hall of Fame, Rome softball field, and the zoo. Leon was an important member of his resident at IRA 9 and will be deeply missed by his fellow housemates, his caregivers and family. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Gary and Larry and his sister-in-law, Mary. Surviving are his brother, Carl Carpenter and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 16 from 1-2 pm at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay St. Fulton, NY 13069. A spring burial will be planned at the Bethel Cemetery, Hannibal.

Obituary Preview: Paul D. Burch, age 49 of Fulton, NY passed away at home, after a long battle with Huntington Chorea, on Thursday, February 17, 2022, with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his mother, Betty Lou Burch; and son, Dana Shedd.Paul is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Michelle Shedd; children, Schuyler (Justin) Shepard, Brittany (Travis Rudd) Burch, and Brandon Burch; sister, Paula Burch; grandchild, Sophia Rudd; faithful companion and peanut butter pal, Libby; and many friends.Paul was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and four wheeling. He also enjoyed cooking; he had a career as a chef in the A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton for 15 years. He was a huge Oakland Raiders fan and he loved spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend who will be missed by all who loved and knew him. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, from 10am to 12pm with a funeral service to follow at 12pm at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton, NY. Burial will be in the spring in Roosevelt Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Richard J. Kemmis, 88, of Fulton, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022. He was born in 1933, in Watertown, a son to the late Lester and Louise Monteith Kemmis. Dick graduated from Cape Vincent Central School. He started his working career at Kodak in Rochester and then joined the US Navy. Dick then furthered his education at Oswego State receiving a degree in Industrial Arts Education and then received his master’s from Syracuse University. He started his career in education as an Industrial Arts Teacher, then transitioned to a Guidance Counselor and retired as an Administrator from the Fulton City School District. Dick was very involved in the community including Rotary International, Oswego County Opportunities and Oswego Industries. He received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International. For many years he was involved in the organization of the Memorial Day Salute. Dick was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Fulton and member of the Cape Vincent American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, genealogy, photography and traveling. Dick was predeceased by his parents; wife, Rosa Pappalardo Kemmis and two sisters, Carolyn Parker and Ann Scott.He will be greatly missed and forever loved by his four children, Kathleen (Alan) Francis, Karen (Terry Heany) Kemmis, Kristine (Martin Knauss) Kemmis and Philip (Heather) Kemmis; eight grandchildren, Kimberly, Andrew and Kirsten Francis; Zoe and Will Knauss; Matthew, Nicholas and Celia Kemmis; one sister, Kay Headley, as well several nieces and nephews and members of the Pappalardo Family.Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton. He was predeceased by his mother, Anne-Marie Hall-Colvin; sisters, Jolene Colvin and Brenda Litz; and a brother-in-law, Paul Fountaine.Howie is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Paula Colvin; children, William Fountaine, Kyle Fountaine, and Courtney (Malachi Manford) Fountaine; grandchildren, Aubree Lilly-Ann Fountaine, Mason Manford, and Oden Manford; father, Joseph Colvin; siblings, Michell Colvin, Andrew Colvin, Tracy (Bernie) Allen, Christine (Dave) Godkin, and Erik Litz; brother in-law, Christopher Fountaine; faithful companion, his beloved chihuahua, Diego; as well as several nieces and nephews. Howie was an avid outdoorsman, he loved being outside exploring the woods and observing nature. He spent many hours outdoors building trails and pathways to enjoy. He also loved all animals, wild and domestic. Howie was a family man who deeply cherished his time with friends and family. He spent 25 loving years with his wife and was especially dedicated to his children and grand babies. Howie worked for Golden Sun Bus Service for years and was known by his students as “Ozzy”. He also worked for over 15 years as a traveling worker for the Amateur Trapshooting Association. Howie played in many bands throughout his life and was a lover of metal music. He enjoyed playing guitar and did so frequently. Howie loved tinkering with model cars and building miniature displays out of his finds. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed by all who loved and knew him.Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 21, 2022, at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton from 10am to 12pm with a funeral service celebration Howie’s life to follow at 12pm. May will be missed in the Village of Hannibal as she played a huge role in the community including, scouting, coaching softball and baseball and spending time at the Village Café. She was predeceased by her parents and son, Jimmy Butterfield. May will be greatly missed and forever loved by her husband of 43 years, Drew Butterfield, Sr.; three children, Drew (Darlene) Butterfield, Jr. of Martville, Michael (Brian) Nunez of Oswego and Kim Butterfield of Fulton; four grandchildren, Cheyenne Calkins, Savanna Butterfield, Drew Butterfield, III and Caleb Butterfield as well as several nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Lewis Groesbeck, 81, of Hannibal, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021 at Morningstar Care Center. Born in Baldwinsville, a son to the late Walter and Carrie (Tottingham) Groesbeck. He worked as a tow motor driver for General Electric retiring after several years and was a member of the Hannibal American Legion. Lewis enjoyed visiting casinos and was known on a first name basis by everyone in Atlantic City. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Lewis was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor and his companion, Pearl Taylor.
Surviving are his four children, Walter (Sherry) Groesbeck, Lyndee (Bill) Torres, Sue (Garth) Blodgett and Mark (Christine) Groesbeck; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and the Taylor Family children.
Calling hours will be from 2-4 pm on Thursday, April 1 at Foster Funeral Home, 837 Cayuga Street, Hannibal with a service to immediately follow. Spring burial will be in Bethel Cemetery.

She worked at Nestle’s in Fulton as a secretary for over 30 years. In her free time, Grace enjoyed being at her camp on Tug Hill and traveling in her motorhome, camping all over the U.S., including Alaska. The most important part of Grace’s life was caring for her family.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Raymond Duncan; second husband, William Gault and longtime companion, Ed Devendorf.
Grace is survived by her sons, Richard Duncan and Daniel (Kathy) Duncan; grandchildren, Adele Duncan (Kristopher Ware), Cassie (Trista) Yatsko-Shurr and Steven (Amber) Shurr; several great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was an extraordinary seamstress and used her multiple sewing machines to create clothing, quilts, and for over 10 years she reupholstered furniture. Marlene was a very active member of Holy Trinity Church and the Fulton Garden Club, but her proudest accomplishment was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas, son, Timothy and mother, Anna Brown. Marlene will be greatly missed by her daughter Kathleen (Rick) Dale; granddaughters, Caroline (Hunter) Smiley and Kristina Dale; great-granddaughter, Saylor Grace Smiley. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, puzzles and coloring books, but above all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Donald and Ethel (Hurlbut) Pople; children, Donald Horn, Bernard Horn, Leroy Horn, Jr., Gary Horn and Janet Goodrich; five brothers and two sisters. Dorothy will be forever loved by her husband of 65 years, Leroy A. Horn; daughter, Tracy (Everet) Fradenburgh; son-in-law, Paul Goodrich; grandchildren, Jonathon (Jamie) Goodrich, Jayme (Krzysztof) Gawel and Jordyn Fradenburgh (Josh Hunt); great-grandchildren, Mason, Logan, Jadon, Shannon, Shawn…and one on the way; siblings, Louise Brooks and Sherry Pople; sister-in-law, Diane Pople; several cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews as well as extended family from the Perrault, Allen, Carr and Romeo families. Obituary Preview: D. Jeanne Lalik, 87, of Fulton, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Syracuse Homes in Baldwinsville. Born in Fulton, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Marion (Parkhurst) DeCaire. Jeanne was a bank teller in her early years then worked as a receptionist in the admissions office at SUNY Oswego for over 20 years. She loved ice skating, roller skating and walking the trails of Beaver Lake with her husband. Jeanne was also an avid reader and wrote poetry that was published in the Valley News. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael “Tippy” in 2018 and her sister, Helen Stuber in 2013.
Surviving are her children, Lynda (Curt) Gibbs, Michaelene (Amos) Webb, Jim Lalik; six grandchildren, Curtis and Nathaniel Gibbs, Amos and Hayley Webb, Mitchell and Ryan Lalik and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Syracuse Homes for the special care provided to their mother.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, South Seventh Street, Fulton. Foster Funeral Home has care of arrangements. Obituary Preview: James (Jim) E. Relf, of Fulton, New York, passed away of natural causes on the morning of February 15, 2021 at the age of 71. Formerly of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Jim embodied the ethos of the immigrant experience, paving the way for his family’s success in the United States. A natural storyteller, Jim could always be heard spinning a tale about his home across the Atlantic, captivating his children and grandchildren alike. More so, Jim always told stories about his wife, Anne, who he is predeceased by. Childhood sweethearts and a happy husband and wife of 50 years, Jim and Anne are together again in a paradise reserved for the two of them.
Jim is survived by his five children: Michael (Julie) Relf; Lisa Relf (Robert) Duso; Anne Marie Relf (Jessie) Waugh; Kevin (Lauren) Relf; and Brendan Relf. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Connor Relf; Evan and Kaylee Waugh; Cassidy and William Duso; and Kate and Adam Relf. Further continuing Jim’s legacy is his first great-grandchild, Kaleb Relf. Jim is also survived by his extensive family back home in Belfast, including his three brothers and four sisters.

Arlene Bergman - January 26, 1923 - February 11, 2021

Obituary Preview: Arlene Bergman received her wings on February 11, 2021 due to complications of COVID-19, having lived a full and rewarding 98 years. She was born in Phoenix, NY to Frederick and Ruth (Burgess) Carey, having lived most of her life in the Volney and Hannibal areas and for the past two years at St. Luke Health Services.
She was a strong and resilient woman who overcame many hardships in her life but was also supportive of her family and friends whom she loved dearly. Arlene worked for many years as a short order cook, managed the lunch counter at Woolworths in Fulton and helped coordinate the first hot lunch program for Fulton City School District. In later years, she enjoyed acrylic painting, many of which hang in our homes today. She also enjoyed traveling across the US with her husband, Frank, many times to his WWII Army reunions. Together, they raised 10 children and celebrated 61 years of marriage. Arlene was predeceased by her husband, Frank; sister, M. Jane Sidman; brother, Donald Carey; three foster children; sisters, Anne, Lorie, and Sandy Strader and great grandson, Brandon Bergman.
Arlene is survived by her children, Mary (John) Donovan of Auburn, Carole (John) Schwitter of Hannibal, Frank (Linda) Bergman of Waunakee, WI., David (Doreen) Bergman of Fulton, Linda (Paul) Attwood, Jeannie (Mike) Gower, Tammy (Ole) Jorgenson, son-in-law, Craig (Karrie) Stewart, all of Oswego and sister-in-law, Carla Carey of Deltona, FL.; 22 amazing grandchildren, 19 precious great-grandchildren, 2 beautiful great-great-grandchildren and many much-loved nieces and nephews.
Special thanks go out to the staff members at St. Luke Health Services including Charlotte Starks, NP and Gwen Chetney, SS for their compassion and wonderful care of our mother. Arlene always said, “I’m a lucky woman, who led a lucky life” and for that she was grateful.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and above all spending time with his family. Bill was loved by many people. He was predeceased by his wife, Beverly Shoults and daughter-in-law, Diane Shoults.
Bill will be greatly missed and forever loved by his five children, Michael Shoults of Fulton, Ronald (Kathy) Shoults of Fulton, Etta Shoults of Fulton, Jackie (Dianna) Shoults of Fulton and William (Kristi) Shoults of Oswego; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Prior Stock American Legion Auxiliary and Elderberries Senior Group. Jane retired after 28 years from Smurfit-Stone in Fulton. She was predeceased by her husband, James Spicer; son, Lyle Fuller; brother, Ernest Darling and son-in-law, Stanley Lyttle.
Jane is survived by two daughters, Cindy Fuller of Washington and Terry Lyttle of Hannibal; two grandchildren, Dana (Tom) McIntyre of Hannibal and Randy (Amanda) Lyttle of Sodus and three great-grandchildren, Kayden and Hunter McIntyre and Waylon Lyttle.
A graveside service will take place in the spring at Hannibal Village Cemetery. Foster Funeral Home, Hannibal, has care of arrangements.

Joanne was a member of the Fulton Alliance Church for 50 years, a Deaconess and involved in mission work. She was a town clerk in Volney and loved working the polls. Some of her favorite past times were games, puzzles, knitting, crocheting and cross stitching. Joanne was a loving mother and cherished grandmother and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth G. MacDowell; second husband, Elmer Cardinali and sister, Jill VerHage.
Joanne will be greatly missed and forever loved by her three children, Mary “Peg” Roach of Oswego, Andy (Pam) MacDowell of South Carolina and Matthew (Bridget) MacDowell of Rochester; five grandchildren, Jason H. (Emily) Roach, Aaron N. (Cathleen) Roach, Kate (Nate) Zakariasen, Connor MacDowell and Matthew MacDowell, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Haviland, Everly, Lucas, Bella and one on the way; two sisters, Jacquie Ambrose and Judy (Barry) Failor; step-daughter, Colleen Stewart as well as several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Fulton Alliance Church, 1044 NY-48, Fulton. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fulton in the spring. Foster Funeral Home, Fulton, has care of arrangements.

He was born in 1955, in Fulton, a son to Maurice Hammond and Frances Phillips Ives. Pete was a graduate of G. Ray Bodley High School in 1974. He was a very loving, giving, kind and generous person, his smile could light a room. Pete touched everyone he met. He loved fishing, socializing, tinkering with electronics, model building and loved music. Pete especially loved Christmas, cooking and baking. He loved sharing whatever he had. Pete loved his family and friends and will be greatly missed by everyone. He was predeceased by his mother, Frances Ives and step-mother, Evelyn Hammond.
Pete is survived by his father, Maurice Hammond; one sister, Rebecca Taylor; step-father, Edward Ives; step-sister, Sue West; step-brother, Randy Buenzow as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Mt. Adnah Cemetery, Fulton. A special thanks to the staff at Sodus Rehabilitation for being more than caregivers, they were his friends. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Manister Martin, Jr., Daniel Martin, and Gerald Martin.
She is survived by her daughter, Ordale (Daryl) Cogan-Brown; three grandchildren, Peter Cogan, III, Jesse Cogan and Mercedes Cogan; three great granddaughters, Willow Cogan, Meadow Cogan and Lennox Cogan; sister, Irene Wiggins; brother, Samuel Martin; sister-in-law, Ruth Martin and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 12-2 pm on Wednesday January 27 at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton with a service to immediately follow. Spring burial will be in Ira Union (White) Cemetery.

Mrs. Hackett is predeceased by her mother and father, Grace and Benjamin Mayback; her husband, Weldon H. Hackett and her sister Jeannine and her husband, Fran Boyce.
