Howard Hanson Lemmert - October 27, 1940 - March 06, 2022

Departed: 03/06/2022 (Frostburg)
Obituary Preview: Howard “Howie” Hanson Lemmert, son of Oren Arden Lemmert and Frances Louise (Hanson) Lemmert, passed away On Sunday, March 6, 2022 at the age of 81 at UPMC Western Maryland from complications of COVID-19. He was born at Miners Hospital in Frostburg on October 27, 1940. He was a retired elementary school teacher who joked that he never graduated from sixth grade.
His father, Oren, owned Lemmert’s Garage on Frostburg’s Main Street where he sold Nash cars and could fix virtually anything. Howie inherited his dad’s tools and the belief that he could fix anything. His mother, Louise, was a school teacher, a florist, and secretary of United Family Services in Frostburg.
Howie was a member of Beall High School’s class of 1958. He attended Frostburg State College, graduating in 1962 from the State Teacher’s College with a Bachelor of Science degree. He later earned multiple Master degrees from Frostburg.
From the time he was four, Howie spent summers at Camp Cliffside, a family-owned sleep-away camp in Springfield near the John Blue Bridge, with his dear friends, family members, and thoughtfully named dogs. He was a dedicated camp counselor and later a co-owner and director of Cliffside with his older brothers.
He married his high school sweetheart, Carole Bean, and they had one son, Kurtis Howard, on May 15, 1963. Howie and Carole remained friends after their divorce, often dining together with their new spouses at class reunions and gatherings.
He was introduced to Linda (Brinkman) Bean at a set-up at The Bowler in 1977. A smitten Howie took to singing the old song “Linda” in the halls of Frost Elementary, the school where he taught for the majority of his career. They married in 1978 and Howie later adopted her two girls, Karen Anne and Kristin Leigh. Howie and Linda welcomed their son, Kory Hanson, on March 23, 1980.
Howie spent his retirement years in the idyllic woods and farmlands of what he called “God’s Country,” hunting, teaching others to hunt, helping anyone who needed help, and offering both solicited and unsolicited advice at every turn. He kept Band-Aids and faded pictures in his wallet, a handkerchief in his pant pocket, a penknife at the ready, and ever-present index cards and a ballpoint pen in his shirt pocket. He had a slow but broad and joyful smile, a quick wit, and impeccable cursive handwriting.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. William “Bill” Lemmert and James “Jim” Lemmert along with many special relatives from previous generations. Howie is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda, and their combined family: Kurtis Lemmert and friend Deborrah Costello of Frostburg; Karen Lemmert of Baltimore; Kristin Kehrwald and husband Kevin of Frostburg; and Kory Lemmert of Baltimore. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Lillian Naill, Ilan Naill, Ella Valentine, Arden Lemmert, and Greta Lemmert, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces in multiple states. His former students, Cliffside campers, Little Leaguers, hunting buddies, and friends would number in the thousands.
Howie was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Frostburg, where he sang tenor in the choir and served as an elder, deacon, and trustee. Per his wishes, Howie will be cremated. A celebration of his life and a communal lunch will be held starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the church.

Savage Food Bank, local historian for the Evergreen House, former teacher’s aide at Mt. Savage Elementary School and school bus monitor to various elementary schools in Allegany County. She was also a charter member of the Mt. Savage Fire Department, and served as an officer on the local town council. Elaine, the eyes, ears and mouth of Main Street and every street in town. She loved talking with people and never met a stranger. Her smile was infectious but her scowl was even more cutting if she threw it your way. Her love of children brought a warm glow to her heart. Her years in education a testimony to having watched 3 family members become teachers and follow in her footsteps. And how she loved Halloween and the many costumes she had designed and worn through the years- the penguin, her all time favorite, a clown, a dog, and even a nun. We never had to want for a costume for she would just whip one up in the sewing room. Mom and Dad were married in 1949 and lived their entire lives in the house we call “home” now 72 years later on Main Street. Her and Dad loved to travel and spend time together. They were always at baseball and other sporting and school events down the years. Mom loved routine- her noontime story hours, ginger snaps and coffee at 10:00 before bed. Notre Dame anything, even getting a personal tour of the famed stadium and going out on the field. Her Steelers, though she wavered on them over the past few years, she never abandoned. So Green/Gold, Black/Gold, and Black/White were all her colors. The many volunteer and committee assignments she seemed never to turn down. Every family pet loved MEMAW. And she loved and spoiled them. And many more activities too numerous to mention here. And we say thank you Mom. Our family wishes to thank the Mt. Savage family community and all who knew Mom for their love and watchful eyes over her for all these 94 years, and especially in the last 19 years since our father passed way. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.)Ronald Laurance Lucas - March 21, 1944 - September 26, 2021

Departed: 09/26/2021 (Frostburg)
Obituary Preview: Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Ronald Laurance Lucas, 77, of Havre de Grace, MD, went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 26, 2021. He died as a result of a tragic accident that occurred at his home. Born on March 21, 1944 in Frostburg, MD, he was the son of the late George and Bernice (Gibson) Lucas, and was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene, Thomas, Robert, and Gary Lucas; and three sisters, Sharon Miller, Darlene Porter, and Donna Lucas. As a child, Ron was interested in serving his community and actively participated in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He always had ambitions of entering the military and serving his country. Ron graduated with honors and as class vice president from Beall High School in 1962. Upon graduation, he applied, qualified, but was denied acceptance to West Point Military Academy, as there were only a few appointments. He tried again the next year unsuccessfully, but this didn’t dampen his spirit. He attended Frostburg State College for a year and a half and then enlisted into the armed forces in 1964. Following basic training at Fort Knox, KY, he qualified for the U.S. Military Academy preparatory school at Fort Belvoir, VA. Through a competitive process, he successfully received the coveted military appointment to West Point Military Academy, and was one of only two students selected from Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. He graduated from West Point in 1969 with the cadet rank of sergeant first class and was then commissioned an Army second lieutenant. While at West Point, he was one of a 45-member cadet honor company that marched in the funeral cortege honoring General of the Army and former President, Dwight D. Eisenhower. After West Point, Ron was stationed at Fort Knox during which he advanced to first lieutenant. In 1970, he reported for duty in Vietnam and by 1971, became an Army captain. In 1972, he graduated from the U.S. Army Rotary Wing Aviation School, Ft. Rucker, AL as a helicopter pilot. By 1973, Ron had already completed two tours in Vietnam and was the recipient of numerous military honors for meritorious achievement and heroism. His accolades included 12 Air Medals and the Bronze Star Medal, which he received 3 times. He was awarded the Air Medal for “exceptionally valorous action as pilot of a utility helicopter when it came under small arms fire.” His ability to skillfully pilot the aircraft out of small arms range avoided what would have been certain injury and possible death for his crew and passengers. After his service in the Vietnam War, Ron was attached to the Fort Bragg 82nd Airborne Division. He then was assigned to the 1204th Transportation Company (aircraft maintenance) Maryland Army National Guard, and then to the 29th Air Traffic Services Group as its executive officer/deputy commander. Ron deployed to Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm with the 29th Air Traffic Services Group during the Persian Gulf War and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He served in the war for 5 months and retired shortly after returning home. In addition to the aforementioned military honors, Ron also received the Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Ron had a long, distinguished career in the military. And, while he was dedicated to his country, he was equally committed to his family. He instilled many of the values he learned through his military training to his nieces and nephews. Despite all of his incredible achievements, he always remained humble and eager to lend a helping hand to friends and family. He is survived by his brother Donald Lucas, Bloomington, Maryland; two sisters, Carole Harper, Frostburg, Maryland, and Glenda McKenzie, Eckhart, Maryland; one brother-in-law, Mike Miller, Frostburg, Maryland, and a sister-in-law, Connie Lucas, Port Matilda, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home located at 60 W. Main Street, Frostburg, MD 21532, on Monday, October 11, 2021 from 2 to 5 p.m. with funeral services following at 5 p.m. with Pastor Kyle Durbin officiating. American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the funeral home. Interment will occur at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Robert Royal Bowen - September 12, 1952 - July 28, 2021

Departed: 07/28/2021 (Frostburg)
Obituary Preview: Robert Royal Bowen, 68, of Frostburg, MD, was surrounded by his family when he left to meet his God and reunite with his previously passed parents, family, and friends on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. Robert (aka Rob, Robbie, Bo, and Baby Baby) was born to Miller (aka Judge Miller Bowen, Goose, and Papa Goose) and Ruth (Shewbridge) (aka Mama Goose) Bowen on September 12, 1952 in New Orleans, LA and was raised in Frostburg, MD. Rob attended Beall High School graduating in the Class of 1970. During those years he lettered in 4 sports (golf, tennis, basketball, and football), was a class officer, lead or participated in several clubs, was a good scholar, and was widely recognized as a terrific dancer. The family was very proud when Rob was awarded the Tom Davis Memorial Award, which recognizes participation in sports, an officer in student government, good character, and good citizenship. For three years during college summers Rob was a seasonal officer in Ocean City, MD Police Department. He loved those summers! Rob graduated from FSU in 1974 with a BS in Political Science. He married the former Debbie Diamond and moved to the Baltimore area where he became a Parole and Probation Officer for Baltimore County, Maryland. In the evenings he began working on a Master of Science in Criminal Justice at the University of Baltimore. He was awarded his degree in 1977. In 1980 Robbie moved the family to Cumberland where he became an agent with New York Life Insurance Co. While there he earned the title Rooky of the Year his first year, he was invited to become the youngest Sales Development and Recruitment Manager at that time in the company. He was well on his way to a successful career in management with New York Life Insurance Co. prior to his disabling stroke in 1984. Robbie was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the International Order of Alhambra, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Sons of the American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose. In 1990 Rob was honored at the 42nd Annual Dapper Dan Sports Dinner with the Joseph K. Mooney Memorial Most Courageous Award. The plaque reads: At six years old Robert Bowen had heart surgery to remove a blockage in the aorta, then had a stroke at the age of thirty, but through his entire life he has participated in sports. As a youth he played little league baseball and basketball. At Beall High School he played football, basketball, golf, and tennis. He plays golf regularly and participates in several golf tournaments each year. His fortitude serves as an inspiration for others with similar handicaps. One of Robbie’s most beloved past times was coaching others in sports. He started coaching girls church league basketball in 1978 in Baltimore, MD, coached his 3 girls in church league basketball through the 80’s and then went on to coach basketball, baseball, and was always around for football at Bishop Walsh High School in the 1990’s where everyone called him Baby Baby! Although with joyful hearts that Robbie is free from earthly bounds, he will be deeply missed by his loving and devoted family: Daughter Brittany and son-in-law Ken Fleming; Daughter Marisa and son-in-law Jason Miller; Daughter Breanna and son-in-law Travis Jessie; Grandchildren Kendal and Jensen Fleming; Caleb, Evie, and Harbor Miller; Tayden, Giana, Tyiss, Luma, and Brecken Jessie; Sister Victoria (Vicky) Bowen-Wiseman and brother-in-law Larry Wiseman. Rob believed that everything happens for a reason and that we should strive to know and do the will of God. He believed that the gentleman always does the kindest thing. He believed that people were basically good and had the right to be free. He believed that bigotry and prejudice were the worst things a person could be guilty of. He believed in the golden rule and in the power of prayer. And finally he believed a good laugh, a tease, a joke, a handshake or a hug would solve many problems. Robbie lived his life with both courage and grace. In his trials, he showed how a man so enchanted by life can be at peace with life’s end. And where does that strength come from? Where is that courage learned? It is the faith of a boy who read the Bible with his mom. It is the faith of a man lying in an operating room who prayed for others before he prayed for himself. It is the faith of a man with a fearful illness who waited on the Lord to call him home. Now death has done all that death can do and we are left with the joyful hope he shared.
Family will receive friends at Sowers Funeral Home, 60 W Main Street, Frostburg, MD on Friday, August 6th from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 and Saturday, August 7th from 11:00-1:00 followed by a 1:00 Memorial Service with Rev. Helen Mency officiating. then a grave site prayer at Frostburg Memorial Park.
That same afternoon from 4:00-7:00 a Celebration of Life will be held at Bishop Walsh High School, 700 Bishop Walsh Road, Cumberland MD. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of the person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or newspaper staff. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful to readers.

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others may require email or phone submissions.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute to the deceased.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

MOST online platforms provide easy sharing options for social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link to share with others via email or messaging apps.

Can I create a memorial website or tribute page instead of an obituary?

Yes! A memorial website or tribute page can be a beautiful way to celebrate a person's life and legacy. These platforms often offer more flexibility and customization options than traditional obituaries.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

DON'T worry! Many funeral homes and online platforms offer guidance and resources to help you craft a meaningful and fitting tribute. You can also seek input from family members or friends who knew the deceased well.

Is it necessary to include funeral service details in an obituary?

No, but it's common practice to include this information so that friends and family know how to pay their respects. If you prefer not to include funeral details, you can simply omit them or mention that services will be private.
