Covington and Lois Ellen (Combs) Covington, predeceased her, as did her brother Joe J. Covington and nephew Eric Covington.
Pat’s list of accomplishments in her full and extraordinary life is very long. As someone who wore many hats, she was recognized for her leadership skills wherever she went and gave her all to the organizations she supported. In doing so, she leaves behind a legacy of wisdom, compassion, and dedication. Her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology was just the beginning of her path of intellectual pursuit and artistic appreciation. She received a Masters of Education in 1974 and then a Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1981 from Southern Illinois University- Carbondale. While inspiring countless students as a Professor of Art and Assistant Director of the School of Art at SIU-C she also maintained memberships in more than a dozen councils and associations, including the Illinois Board of Higher Education Art Association, where she served as Chairman for ten years. She was sought out as a consultant, advisor, and board member by many organizations including the European Business Seminar, Apple Computer in the early 1980s, and the Humanities Council on the John A. Logan Community College Board of Directors. Following her teaching career, Pat changed hats to Assistant then Associate Director of Admissions and Records at SIU-C, until her retirement. Pat loved art, music, and people. Her creative spirit will live on through her paintings, her inspirational leadership, and through memories of the twinkle in her eye as she shared her latest ideas.
Beyond the classroom, Pat was well known for her infectious smile, her kind heart and her generous nature. People would say she never knew a stranger, she was that easy to talk to. She also had an insatiable curiosity about the world and loved to travel. Her adventures took her from Australia to Aruba to South Africa and many places in between. As a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America, she was a member of the Board of Directors, numerous committees including the local Shagbark Council as Treasurer, and received a Woman of Distinction Award in 1981. Generous with her time as well as money, she co-created the Covington Entrepreneurial Scholarship at SIU-C, to support young entrepreneurs from Southern Illinois. Most recently, she established with Shari the Covington-Rhode Senior Prize in Art at the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico. May her legacy continue to inspire and guide us to emulate her dedication to knowledge, kindness, and doing good in the world. Her light will forever shine in the hearts of those she touched.

Lloyd T. Rich - February 27, 1946 - July 17, 2023

Departed: 07/17/2023 (Carbondale)
Obituary Preview: Wild foods expert, historical reenactor, galactic philosopher and local character Lloyd T. "Time Lloyd" Rich passed away July 16, 2023, in Marion, IL.
Born to Lloyd George Rich and Ilona Helen Szinte of Maquoketa, IA, February 29, 1946 (leap year!). He was 77 years old, or, if one considers that his birthday only truly took place every 4 years, he was an extremely youthful 19, which is an amusing and confusing contradiction and therefore suits him perfectly.
Lloyd is survived by brother Leigh Roger Rich, of Davenport, IA, Roger's wife Janie, and their children Jon, Lisa, and Kayla, as well as the many friends, students, and fellow travelers Lloyd has known across the years. Lloyd hosted the Hitchhiker's Guide-themed Galactic Picnic potlucks at Evergreen Park for many years, left chalk art around town whenever possible, celebrated Talk Like A Pirate Day as if it was a federal and religious holiday, wrote fanfiction with all-caps recipes stuffed in the middle, and wobbled around precariously on his bike wearing a floppy hat, overstuffed backpack, and three layers of clothes years after he probably should have ceased doing so.
Lloyd was always 100% himself, spreading bemusement, exasperation, and joy at his discretion. If you ever had a conversation or Encounter™ with him, he remembered something of it (although probably not your name), and if you ever sent him a Christmas card he kept it forever.
Lloyd loved every small pleasure of living, right up to the last moment of it, and was ravenous for friendship and community to the point of being both overwhelmed and overwhelming at times. He did not easily pick up on social cues and you had to be as direct and persistent as he was to get your point across. Lloyd was one of the weirdest and truest Carbondaliens Southern Illinois has known, and our little ecosystem feels less biodiverse with his passing. Lloyd was one-of-a-kind, made an impression on everyone he met, and if you would like to share your stories and pay your respects, his memorial will be held at the Newman Catholic Student Center in Carbondale, IL, Saturday, August 5th, 2023. Visitation begins at 9AM with mass at 10, and a reception with refreshments after. Please stop by if only for the snacks; Lloyd certainly would have. Pirates and time travelers welcome, and of course don't forget your towel. RSVP to mageling2@gmail.com, or directly to the Newman Center. (618-529-3311) They're also accepting donations to help defer the cost of his arrangements which is greatly appreciated as said arrangements are being covered entirely by those close to him. https://donate.siucnewman.org/
Any extra will go to help those facing homelessness, a cause Lloyd was passionate about his whole life.
Please come share your stories and memories, be kind to one another and celebrate our beautiful uniqueness, and as Lloyd would often say, and sing, to a tune we're pretty sure he made up himself, keep smiling.

Bruce Amsbary - May 17, 1956 - July 05, 2023

Departed: 07/05/2023 (Carbondale)
Obituary Preview: Harlow Bruce Amsbary passed into his final adventure during the week of July 1, 2023, or as he was fond of saying “crossed over the rainbow bridge.” Bruce was born in Champaign, Illinois in 1957, as the third child of Frank Clifford Amsbary III and Mina Amsbary (Coy).
He is survived by his immediate family – brother Stephan Harlow Amsbary and wife Christine Amsbary (Marion, NC), sister Robin Amsbary (Louisville, KY), sister Beth Amsbary and husband James Nichols (Seattle, WA) – as well as his chosen family of Carol Pearson (Champaign, IL), Sue Westerfeld (Nampa, ID), Joshua Ryan (Indianapolis, IN), his beloved Malamute Budzo, and hundreds of friends across the world.
Bruce held strong opinions and acted on them. While attending Central High School in Champaign during the 1970’s, he and a group of friends were frustrated with the lack of all-ages venues for the live music that was pouring out of local clubs. They formed Rock Ventures, a group that produced all-ages rock shows including Hound Dog Taylor and Funkadelic. One of their favorite events was a ground-breaking, day-long live rock festival on Cannonball Hill in Crystal Lake Park. The 16 year-old organizers were proud to leave the grounds spotless when the night was over. Bruce ran for Student Council President as an alternative candidate and was as surprised as everyone else when he actually won.  He graduated from Central High in 1974. Bruce attended Illinois State University studying psychology, taking a semester at University of Oregon in Eugene.
He fell in love with the mountains and forests of the Pacific Northwest. He soon moved to the coast, finishing his degree there and embarking on a lifetime of care for wild places. Bruce worked in many parts of the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management across eight states. He fought fires, worked lookouts, staffed dispatch, and finally reached the kind of position he’d hoped for – welcoming and connecting visitors to the natural world – on the Shawnee National Forest in Illinois.
Bruce was especially honored to collaborate closely with the Oglala Lakota Nation in better coordinating federal firefighting with indigenous agencies. The friendships and understanding he gained here formed core values for him.
As a gay man who lived in rural areas, Bruce became an activist for gay rights. In Bend, Oregon he founded Beyond the Closet (BTC), a public awareness nonprofit that recognized the intersectionality of prejudice across race, nationality, and orientation. With BTC Bruce brought in speakers and cultural experiences to broaden the perspective of Central Oregon residents.
Bruce would say that showing the film Priscilla,Queen of the Desert was a “fabulous” way to open minds and hearts. Before it was common, he brought gay public figures to schools and churches on speaker tours to open conversations about gay marriage and the community cost of anti-gay policies. In recognition of this work, Bruce was named Grand Marshall of the Portland Pride Parade in 1995.
Bruce maintained a wide network of friends from all walks of life. His dedication to sending postcards from odd corners of the U.S., as well as Smokey Bear paraphernalia, was legendary. He could drive across the country spending every night with a friend if he wasn’t camping in a new location he wanted to explore. For his final ten years, his companion in these adventures was always a Malamute, first Buck then Budzo. Bruce faced mental health challenges that complicated his life, often coming through them due to the heroic dedication of his community.
A Celebration of Bruce’s life will be scheduled in the future. If you would like to make a gift in honor of Bruce’s life, the family invites you to support his passion for a more just world by making a gift in his name to one of the causes he probably harangued you about: An alternative radio station LGBTQ rights Environmental protection Your local indigenous tribe Or make a gift to the Indian Creek Kennels, who adopted his beloved Bud, 5578 Giant City Rd, Carbondale, IL 62902

Kathryn A. Chambliss - April 08, 1956 - May 20, 2023

Departed: 05/20/2023 (Carbondale)
Obituary Preview: Kathy Chambliss, a beacon of compassion, creativity, and steadfast connection to her community, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the age of 67. Her spirit and warmth touched countless lives and will persist in the hearts of those who knew her.
Kathy was born in Cairo, IL, on April 8, 1956, a cherished daughter to Dr. Homer Chambliss and Flora Chambliss and a beloved sibling in a large, vibrant family. Her childhood in Cairo fostered her lifelong commitment to learning, kindness, and cherishing life's many wonders.
One such wonder was Camp Ondessonk, a pivotal part of her life from a young age. This idyllic retreat became a sanctuary of personal growth, deep friendships, and indelible memories. Known at camp as Tinkerbell, she brought joy and laughter to all around her, later serving as a Counselor in Training (CIT), Counselor, Unit Leader, and Archery Instructor. She used these roles to foster an accepting, nurturing environment, sharing her wisdom with younger generations. Her passion for archery elevated her to the position of lead instructor, mesmerizing many with her flaming arrow demonstrations during Lodge ceremonies.
Though Kathy’s impactful years there extended each summer through to her college graduation, she carried this profound connection to Camp Ondessonk throughout her adult life, inspiring her to give back to the community that shaped her.
Kathy’s post-college journey led her to a rewarding career at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), her alma mater, serving in university food service production for three decades. As a production manager, she was dedicated to her work and beloved by her colleagues.  Her tireless service ethic was only surpassed by her knack for building community within her team. During this time, she also earned her Practical Nursing credential at John A. Logan College. As an LPN, Kathy applied her clinical knowledge and caregiving skills in numerous settings, both employed and volunteer, through the rest of her life.
In retirement, Kathy’s spirit of service remained steadfast. She found purpose in her part-time roles at Good Samaritan Ministries and at Liberty Estates assisted living facility. Whether caring for the vulnerable or assisting the elderly, Kathy brought a joy and warmth that comforted all who crossed her path.
Kathy’s enduring kindness was especially evident during the hardships of the pandemic, as she began cooking Sunday dinners for the homeless. This act of love ensured that those most in need experienced the comfort of a warm, home-cooked meal.
A lifelong Cardinals and Salukis fan, Kathy lived a joyful life amongst family and friends, enjoying live sports, concerts, travel, swimming, and the outdoors.
Known for her radiant smile, infectious laugh, and helpful nature, Kathy will be fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. Her legacy of compassion and service will continue to inspire us all.
