Paul Vernon Chiles - April 12, 1949 - June 22, 2018

Obituary Preview: Paul Vernon Chiles of Inwood, W.V. went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2018. He was born April 12, 1949. He is predeceased by his parents, Ilene and C. Lloyd Chiles.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Chiles, her son Brian Ferris and wife Kimberly and grandson, Ethan. He also leaves his sister Annette Schneider, her daughter, Suzie Nelson and husband Curt and their daughter, Katie.
In his high school youth he served in Army ROTC and was a member of Youth For Christ. He graduated from Kemper Military Academy and the University of Nebraska, receiving a degree in U.S. History.
He served as 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Paul was a leading authority on historic weapons and lectured frequently on them and other historical topics throughout the nation. He served for many years as a Historic Weapons Officer and Black Powder Safety officer for the National Park Service. He was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.
He was employed with the National Park Service at Gettysburg National Military Park, Badlands National Park and finally Antietam National Battlefield. Chiles served at Antietam for nearly 30 years where he served as Chief of Interpretation, Chief Historian, and led tours for the public and VIP’s; among them Premier Ehud Barak of Israel. Paul managed the largest costumed volunteer interpretive program in the National Park Service which included demonstrations of artillery, cavalry, and infantry tactics and camp life. The Annual Torchlight Tour, which depicted life around Sharpsburg, including medical care after the battle was very popular and with his guidance the entire Antietam Volunteer Program won the Take Pride in America award, which included a White House ceremony. Paul was a nationally known authority on artillery in the Civil War and at his death was writing a major study of artillery at Antietam. His previous writings include National Park Service interpretive pamphlets, book reviews for Civil War publications, and was the author of a special issue of Blue and Gray Magazine titled “ARTILLERY HELL.”
Paul was active in many organizations; the Sharpsburg Lions, American Legion, Hagerstown Civil War Round Table, Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table (past president) and The Council on America’s Past.
Paul leaves a legacy of knowledge and of many accomplishments in the field of Civil War studies, He will be remembered for his fair treatment of his friends, park visitors and the visitors to Antietam.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel.
Services will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 7:00pm at the funeral home.

He was of the Methodist faith, served in the U S Army and he retired from the dietetic service at the V A Medical Center. He loved hunting and playing music with his guitar and banjo. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Cline at home, one son, Donnie Johnson and wife Tammy of Summit Point, one grandson, Aaron Johnson and great grandchild, Alana Johnson; six brothers, Elmer Johnson of North Carolina, Alfred, Douglas and Frank Johnson all of Augusta, West Virginia, Sidney Johnson of Amnesville, Virginia and Larue Johnson of Comas, Maryland, two sisters, Helen Meksvanh of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Nancy Mills of Urbana, Maryland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by first wife, Zeneth Marie Rudolph Johnson, daughter, Susan Faith Johnson and seven brothers and seven sisters, Luther, Richard, Ruth and Eva Johnson, Martha and Mary Hansen, Beulah Whetzel, Forest Johnson and William and James Armentrout, Rosie Ingram and Phyllis Hughes, Bill and Charlie Huffmans, . Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Brown Funeral Homes South Berkeley Chapel with the Pastor Jim Holt and Reverend John Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant View Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Bulman Shores, “Beth,” at home, three children: Sandra L. Engleman, and husband Brian, of Jefferson, Maryland, John E. Duffy, and wife Charlene, of Charles Town, and Christina A. Phyllis was an active member in many ministries of the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church in Martinsburg.
A celebration of Phyllis' life will be held at Full Gospel Pentecostal Church at 11:00 AM on Friday August 23, 2013 with graveside service at Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town, WV.
The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, August 22, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Brown Funeral Homes' South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood.

He retired as a Unit Chief with the FBI with 30 years of service. Mr. Liskey was a consultant with the Defense Department and did private investigative work with the Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney's office.
He was a member of Hedgesville United Methodist Church.
Mr. Liskey, a 28 year prostate cancer survivor, started a support group "Man to Man" with the American Cancer Society in Berkeley Co., Winchester, and Hagerstown.
He was a 1956 graduate of Warren County High School and a graduate of Bridgewater College.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Harriett Woody Liskey; one son, Steven W. Liskey and wife, Monni of Odenton, MD; one daughter, Deborah E. Orcino and husband, Battista of Burtonsville, MD; two grandchildren, Christina M. and Dominic Orcino; one brother, Garland C. Liskey and wife, Lillian of Hedgesville and Fort Myers, FL; niece, Carolyn E. Thompson and husband, Jack; and nephew, Alan R. Byrd; great-nephew, J.T. Thompson; two brothers-in-law, G. V. Juliano and wife, Caroline of Woodstock, VA and Thomas L. Woody and son, Justin of Front Royal, VA.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 11:00AM at the Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood with visitation from 10:00AM to 11:00AM prior to services with Rev. Dr. George Earle, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, VA.

Mrs. Haines, along with her husband, Alvin, was the former owner of Capon Bridge Service Station, Haines Market and Fuel, Haines Mobile Home Court, and Haines Hardware Store of Inwood.
She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Collis and husband, Gary, of Bunker Hill; two grandchildren, David R. Collis, of Bunker Hill, and Tara R. Collis-Wooten and husband, Thomas, of Bunker Hill; five great-grandchildren, Amber Collis, Rebecca Harshman, Thomas Presley, Addison Collis and Conner Wooten; and two sisters-in-law, Gladys Williamson, of Marlowe, and Faye Haines, of Stephens City, VA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Russell Haines, on May 11, 2009.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Brown Funeral Home’s South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood with the Rev. Raymond Martin officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be David Collis, Thomas Wooten, Linden Heavner, Jerry Hartman, Joe Cheshire and Shawn Williamson.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24th, at the funeral home.
