Jo Ann Lainen - January 11, 1929 - March 22, 2022

Departed: 03/22/2022 (McGregor)
Obituary Preview: Jo Ann Lainen, 93, passed peacefully in the arms of her daughters in her home on Round Lake on March 22, 2022. Her previous few days while still with us were spent with family and close friends with tender goodbyes. She is now with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and her husband, Bill.  She was born Jo Ann Park on January 11, 1929 in Redwood Falls, MN, the daughter of J. Samuel and Nellie (Doyle) Park. In 1939 the Park family moved from Redwood Falls to a farm north of Tamarack, MN. She attended North Star School through 8th grade and graduated from McGregor High School in 1946. She was very active in the 4H Club, once winning a state competition in sewing. High school was followed by a 2-year Teaching Certificate from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1948. She taught 2nd grade at the Aitkin Elementary School for one year.  She and her love, Bill Lainen, met at church in Tamarack and were friends for many years in the Tamarack/Mc Gregor area before uniting in marriage on June 18, 1949. They were blessed with a marriage of over 72 years, and their three daughters, Nancy, Karen and Peggy, and their adored grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Jo Ann and Bill lived in Duluth following their marriage, raising their family, while Bill was employed as a teacher and elementary school principal with the Duluth School District for 32 years.  The girls were fortunate to have Jo as a stay-at-home mom. She was actively involved with her church (United Baptist Christian Church), the church family, Christian Women’s Club, bridge clubs (both women’s and couples with Bill), neighborhood coffee clutches, and was a long time member of p.e.o Chapter CR in Duluth. She was a Girl Scout leader, a wonderful seamstress, cook, pianist and knitter (all skills she passed on to her daughters).  She knit a baby blanket for anyone she heard was having a baby (too many to count).  She was blessed with many friendships because she was a good friend. She was the “Hostess with the Mostess,” inviting guests for almost every Sunday dinner, particularly elderly women who had no other family. She hosted dinners for Bill’s faculty at times.  After she and Bill retired to Round Lake she was involved in a variety of activities and organizations, often volunteering her time.   She enjoyed pickling and canning the produce from their large garden, fish fries from Bill’s catches, hosting friends and family, and playing the piano for their church services for over 30 years. She and Bill enjoyed entertaining all guests, hosting their annual church picnics and baptisms in the lake, and loved traveling and camping all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe. She never wanted to be a “Snowbird” because she missed family and friends too much and didn’t want to be gone for long periods of time. Her faith, family and church family were always her priority.  She was a beautiful soul, showing her love through giving, praying for, showing compassion and sharing words of wisdom (mostly truths from the bible). She was the best wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend anyone could ever ask for, always putting everyone else before herself. She never ceased praying for all of her loved ones.  Jo Ann was preceded in death by her cherished husband Bill, her parents, beloved daughter Nancy Lainen Keussen, brothers Robert Park and Donn (Retta) Park, sister Marcia (Bruce) Hanson and special Grandma Doyle.
She is survived by daughters Karen Jarvi of Cloquet and Peggy Lainen Anderson of Duluth; grandchildren Matthew Jarvi (Melisa Davis) of Carlton, Nicholas Jarvi (Vicki) of Cloquet, Kyle Anderson of Tamarack, Kara Reimherr (Tim) of St. Paul, and Sathya Bush (Nathan) of California; great grandchildren Kaden Anderson, Haileigh and Logan Jarvi, and Orion Bush. Additional survivors are her favorite brother-in-law Bruce Hanson (Marlys Dobis) of St. Joseph and nephew Sean Hanson (Heather) and their triplet daughters of North Carolina, sister-in-law Retta Park of Arizona, nephews Duncan Park (Debra) of Missouri and Dean Park (Sarah) of California, and her adored French AFS student daughter, Francoise “Fouf” Guillaume (Bernard) of Paris, France. Beyond blood relatives, Jo Ann had a multitude of family and friends, both past and present. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 30th at the Tamarack Christian Church. Visitation will be at noon with a service at 1:00. A luncheon will follow at the Sno-Flyers Club in Tamarack. She would be pleased by memorials to Tamarack Christian Church or to charity of choice.  All correspondence may be mailed to her McGregor address. Departed: 03/21/2022 (McGregor)
Obituary Preview: Alice Ann Pickles, 75 of McGregor passed away Monday, March 21, 2022 at her home near McGregor.  She was born April 9, 1946 in Brainerd to Custer Albert and Edna Louise (Kottke) Nelson.  She grew up in Garrison, MN and attended Brainerd High School. Alice was united in marriage to  Howie Junior Pickles on May 12, 1962 in Aitkin.  They lived in several places before settling in McGregor in 1969. It was there that they built their family home and raised their children.  Alice was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She loved living in the country, sewing, baking bread and gardening. She and her husband, Howie built the Fireside restaurant in McGregor in 1977.
She was often at the restaurant, usually found in the back prepping food for the Sunday buffet with kids or grandkids in tow or chatting and laughing with the customers. In addition to helping at the restaurant, she managed the Galaxy Roller Rink that she and Howie built and operated for several years. She enjoyed roller skating and getting to know the area youth, remaining lifelong friends with many. They also opened the Country Meadows Inn which Alice managed. Again, making many friends among her employees and customers.
As busy as she was, we always knew family was her life. She was proud of becoming a grandmother at a young age, and had the energy and stamina needed to keep up with the little ones. She could often be seen cheering them on at their school programs and events. Every summer she joined her family for the annual North Shore trip. Often she would be the first one in line as we hiked up the trails. Many memories and laughs were enjoyed around the campfires. She was always up for adventure, traveling to visit daughters Julie in Key West and Wendy in Anchorage, often accompanied by daughter Holly from McGregor.
Her granddaughter Erika and family had recently moved up north, giving them all the gift of even more precious time to spend together, gathering at her house often for family dinners and bonfires. She had a true love of the outdoors, and cherished all the wildlife that could be seen in her backyard. Several years ago she began kayaking at nearby Portage Lake, walking down to the lake and hopping in her kayak sometimes several times a day. She loved being on the water, so peaceful, surrounded by nature. She also enjoyed snowmobiling during the winter months. She loved getting together with her siblings near the family farm in Garrison where she grew up.
She was Preceded in death by her parents Edna and Custer Nelson and her sisters: Virginia Worley and Joyce Eder. Grateful, loving, kind, appreciative, and humble, with a great sense of humor and warm smile are just a few of the words that describe this kind soul that has left us way to soon. William "Bill" Lainen - July 11, 1926 - January 14, 2022

Departed: 01/14/2022 (McGregor)
Obituary Preview: William Lainen, 95.5, peacefully passed in his home on Big Round Lake and joined the Lord on January 14, 2022.  He was born on July 11, 1926 to William and Ann (Oleson) Lainen. His early years were lived at the fur farm on Big Round Lake and then at the farm his parents created near Tamarack, MN. Schooling consisted of eight years at the two-room school in Tamarack and high school at McGregor, graduating in 1944. The following two years he served in World War II as a Naval Aviation Radioman on a Martin Mariner patrol bomber. He was involved in a Bermuda Triangle search for five Avengers that disappeared, never to have been found. He was always grateful to have been pulled off a flight that also went missing in the search.  Following his service, he attended UMD for his Bachelor of Science in Education (graduating in 1949) and the U of M for his Masters (graduating in 1953). His career was with the Duluth School District. Three years were spent teaching at an elementary school, followed by 32 years as an elementary school principal in several schools. His last eleven years were at Chester Park Elementary, from which he retired. He dedicated his life to education for over 35 years and was blessed with a retirement of over 37 years.  Married on June 18th, 1949, Bill claimed he was a 49-er who struck gold when he married Jo Ann Park. He was blessed with a marriage of over 72 years and had a never-ending devotion to his daughters Nancy, Karen, and Peggy, his grandchildren, and his beloved great-grandchildren.  Highlights of his life were his career, his family at United Baptist Christian Church, family time at the cabin (he waterskied on his 70th birthday), and numerous camping trips to many National Parks and Forests (both tenting and in the old trusty camper). The Boundary Waters were also a favorite destination. He then attained his life-long dream of retiring at Big Round Lake where he built a year- round home and enjoyed that with family and friends for well over another 35 years. Lake living was his heart and soul.  His Christian walk was of highest priority. A long retirement permitted continued work through Tamarack Christian Church, a published devotional book written by him and Jo, over twenty years in the Gideon Bible Ministry, over twenty years as custodian of Round Lake Cemetery, and many years of activity with Tamarack Seniors (Golden Age), and the Aitkin County Committee on Aging. One year he was named Aitkin County Volunteer of the Year.  He loved softball and played in organized Duluth leagues until retirement. Most of all, he loved his family, everything outdoors and his home on Big Round Lake. Foremost, Bill was the self-declared, universally disputed “Round Lake Champion” of cribbage.
He was Preceded in death by his parents, beloved daughter Nancy Lainen-Keussen, half-sisters Virginia Harrington and Jean Davis, and sister-in-law Marcia Hanson, brother-in-law Robert Park and Donn Park, niece Bobbi Potter (Dan), and his special grandma Emma Oleson Hawkinson, and members of the John Hawkinson family.
Bill is survived by his soulmate Jo Ann, daughters Karen Jarvi of Cloquet and Peggy Lainen Anderson of Duluth; Grandchildren Matthew Jarvi (Melisa Davis) of Carlton, Nicholas Jarvi (Vicki) of Cloquet, Kyle Anderson of Tamarack, Kara Reimherr (Tim) of St. Paul, and Sathya Bush (Nathan) of California; greatgrandchildren Kaden Anderson, Haileigh and Logan Jarvi, and Orion Bush. Additional survivors are Bill’s favorite brother-in-law Bruce Hanson (Marlys Dobis) of St. Joseph and nephew Sean Hanson (Heather) and their triplet daughters of North Carolina. Also left behind are special nieces Lynn Ramme (Peter), Mona Berg (Larry), deceased Bobbi Potter (Dan) and Debby Gudenzi, and his forever daughter, French AFS student Francoise “Fouf” Guillaume (Bernard) of Paris, France. Beyond blood relatives, Bill had a multitude of extended family and friends, both past and present. A Celebration of Life will be 1pm – Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Tamarack Christian Church in Tamarack. Visitation will  be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.  A luncheon will follow at the Sno-Flyers Building in Tamarack. Bill would be pleased by memorials to the Tamarack Christian Church or to the Gideons.  Arrangements are with McGregor Funeral Home & Cremation Services in McGregor.  www.srtfuneral.com

David John Strelnieks - April 18, 1969 - January 01, 2022

Departed: 01/01/2022 (McGregor)
Obituary Preview: David Strelnieks
David John Strelnieks passed away on January 1, 2022, at the age of 52 in McGregor, Minnesota.  David loved traveling, carpentry, and spending time with family and friends. He had a humble, gentle, and comfortable personality. His personable nature created many lifelong friendships in high school. While attending St. Olaf College, David spent a semester abroad in Thailand. After college, David and his good friend Mike Johnson traveled around Alaska. David loved to tell stories of their adventures together. While working at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, he met his wife, Marilyn. Together, they moved to Bend, Oregon to enjoy life in the mountains. David and Marilyn were married at Lake Tahoe in 1998. It was in Oregon where David discovered his passion for authentic log home construction and mastered the craft. Over his lifetime, he used his skills to construct many log homes in Oregon and Northern Minnesota as well as hundreds of pieces of beautiful log furniture.  After years of travel and living in Oregon, David and family moved back to Minnesota to be closer to family and friends. Being close to family was an understatement as he built his dream log home on Eagle Lake side-by-side with his brother Mark building a cabin and later, his sister Julie building their cabin. After many years, the 3 kids recognized their dream of having the 3 lake homes/cabins side by side on Eagle Lake. For years to come, the families all shared summers on the lake together. David described the lake as a “full-time vacation spot” and spent many evenings on the dock watching beautiful sunsets with his family.  David is survived by his Son Sawyer (Carlie) Strelnieks, Daughter Breana Strelnieks, Mother Irene Bjorklund, Stepfather Bob Bjorklund, Sister Julie (Jeff) Verdoorn, Brother Mark (Kathy) Strelnieks, former wife Marilyn Strelnieks, and many other special relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Helmut Strelnieks. Dave’s life will be celebrated and remembered Saturday January 15, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Grace Church Chaska (Southwest Christian High School) 1981 Bavaria Road, Chaska, MN 55318. Due to Minnesota’s cold winters and frozen ground, Dave will be buried on May 14 in Cromwell, MN. Time and detail for burial to follow.  Arrangements are with McGregor Funeral Home in McGregor.  www.srtfuneral.com

Patricia "Pat" Jeannine Sorensen - July 10, 1946 - November 08, 2021

Departed: 11/08/2021 (McGregor)
Obituary Preview: Pat (don’t call her Patty) left us on November 8, 2021 after battling dementia for several years.  She was born on July 10, 1946 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Hyle and Eva (Jean) Smith - and was an adorable little girl with the reddest hair and the brightest smile. Her dad was in the Air Force so the family lived in many different places, both in the U.S. and abroad.  She was an outgoing girl, very popular, and with a bouffant to die for!
In 1967, in a bowling alley in Fairfield, California, she met Dick.  She always said it was his eyes that attracted her.  The rest of him must have been okay too because three months later, they were married in Reno.
Pat left everything she knew and moved to northern Minnesota with Dick – which surely was a bit of a culture shock.  She adapted quickly and fit right into the Sorensen family.  Kris was born in 1968 and Mike was born in 1969 – she was a loving and devoted mom to both despite the many headaches they probably gave her.
In 1986, she decided to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse.  Going back to school at age 40 was not an easy thing and she had her doubts along the way, but she became an LPN – a testament to her stubborn nature.
More important than the trajectory of her life was the way that she made her way through that life – with bravery and humor.  She wasn’t perfect but who is?  We’re all better people for knowing her, loving her, and being loved by her.  We’re so very happy that she’s no longer trapped in that uncooperative body and that she no longer has to struggle to remember the countless people that she’s touched during her 75 years.  We will miss her so much.
Pat is survived by her husband, Dick; daughter, Kris; son, Mike; brother, Dane (Becky); grandchildren Brittany, Anthony, Mikhayla, Hannah, and Suzanne; and several brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews.
There will be no service.  If you are so inclined, you may make a memorial donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Saint Francis Service Dogs (www.saintfrancisdogs.org) but, really, what Pat would have loved is for folks to just raise a glass of their favorite beverage, give a little toast, and remember her fondly.  To sign the guestbook online, go to:  www.srtfuneral.com.  Arrangements are with McGregor Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Paul Henry Sather - January 21, 1930 - September 13, 2021

Departed: 09/13/2021 (McGregor)
Obituary Preview: The McGregor/Sandy Lake area lost another lifelong resident on Monday, September 13, 2021. The Lord called away Paul Henry Sather, 91, in the log home he built north of McGregor, MN.
He was born January 21, 1930, in Aitkin, MN, to P. Alfred and Ruth (Meikle) Sather, attending school in McGregor, and graduating from MHS in 1948. Between logging and farming, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Ruth Larson on December 27, 1952, at Grace Lutheran Log Church, settling just down the road from Sandy Lake.
In 1924, Alfred and Ruth opened a quaint, country store and gas station on the west side of highway 65 (corner of 65 and county road232), a short walk from the front door of their farm house. It would be the beginning in the creation of a small, lakes-area community. Paul and Marilyn helped run the store with his parents and were gradually handed the helm. After 39-years at that location, a new, larger store opened on the opposite corner in 1963, housing a cafe counter, clothing, hardware and groceries. Paul also bought green, wild rice from area pickers for a processing outfit in Ore, MN. He continued to build up the business on the corner by adding a laundromat in 1967. (This eventually, transformed into The Roasting House in 2005). In 1970, a house was built behind the new store where they finished raising their five children. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Tamarack Sportsmen’s Club.
Paul was a jack of all trades who loved working on things, could fix anything, and also liked pushing brush piles around with his dozer. He enjoyed traveling the countryside in the RV with Marilyn, and especially enjoyed family time. With his sons now at the helm of the store, he was frequently seen in his chair near the coffee/cocoa dispenser, ready to visit and tell a good tale. He will be dearly missed and long-remembered by all who knew him.
Paul is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; son, Donald Sather and his parents.
He is survived by his children; Linda (Gary) Van Slyke of McGregor, Bob (Diane) Sather of McGregor, Lee (Kim) Sather of McGregor and Curt (Diane) Sather of McGregor; grandchildren, Aaron (Amy) Hansen, Greg (Joanne) Frazier-Hansen, Jeffrey (Nikki) Sather, Amy (Josh) Tenney, Becky (Ben) Stealy, Stacey (Dustin) Andrews, Eric (Amy) Sather, Rachel Sather and Christian (Darcy) Murphy; great grandchildren, Addison, Sadie and Aria Sather, Oliver and Charlie Stealy, Lahria Andrews, Dillon and Johanna Sather, Soren and Henrik Tenney, Lorena Hansen, William and Henry Murphy; brother, Dr. A. Howard (Ann) Sather; other relatives and many, many friends.
Services will be held Saturday, September 18, at 11 AM, in Grace Lutheran Church, McGregor. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Pine Needle Cemetery, Shamrock Township. To sign the guestbook online, go to:  www.srtfuneral.com.  Arrangements are with McGregor Funeral Home and Cremation Service, McGregor.
