Paul Elmer Evans - December 22, 1925 - March 16, 2022

Departed: 03/16/2022 (Solon Springs)
Obituary Preview: Paul Elmer Evans, aged 96, of Solon Springs, Wisconsin, died in his home on March 16, 2022 surrounded in the light and love of his family. Paul had wanted to live forever and was disappointed when his body didn’t cooperate.
Born December 22, 1925 in Auburn, Washington, Paul always had a soft spot in his heart for the West  Coast.  At the young age of 16, with his parents blessing, he joined the Army Transport, a civilian division of the Army, and upon graduation from high school joined the Navy to proudly serve his country. Paul never grew tired of telling stories about his military experiences although some of his listeners may have grown a bit weary.
A contractor and builder by trade,  Paul was intensely creative and said his best ideas came to him in his sleep. A master craftsman, particular and exacting in his execution of plans and ideas, which were always big ones, he built two beautiful homes for his family, loved teaching his sons how to use tools and firmly instilled the measure twice rule. Paul was always optimistic and innovative in his work with wood and could identify any tree at 50 yards. He called them his friends.
Somewhat of a smooth talking gentleman, he met his future wife Lisa by flirting with her at a laundromat. At the very least she knew she was getting a man who wasn’t afraid to do his own laundry. She had no idea how much he would adore her.  Paul and Lisa married in 1977 and had three sons together, lots of laughs and many great adventures to Idaho and the West  Coast. They operated the Garden House Greenhouse in Solon Springs until retirement at which point Lisa was kept busy making apple pies as Paul could never get enough.  Paul’s relationship with his dinner plate was legend, he piled food on like a lumberjack, never forgot to compliment the cook, and was always the last to leave the table because nothing hurried him ever. Paul  continued working in his shop crafting bowls on the lathe up until the end.
Paul leaves his immediate and extended family with sweet memories and deep gratitude for having shared his life. Wife Lisa Evans of Solon Springs, son David Evans and wife Jennifer of Washington DC, son Benjamin Evans and wife Kristin of Solon Springs, son Caley Evans and wife Cassie of Solon Springs, son Jesse Evans of Williston, North Dakota,  and grandchildren Issac, Micah, Mason, Kaya, Alexis, and  Rowen.
Paul’s family will celebrate his life at a later date with a private send off involving a canoe and flaming arrows shot from bows he made.  Memorials may be made to the Solon Springs Volunteer Fire Department. He would have appreciated the irony.

Martha Louise Hinde - August 09, 1924 - December 12, 2021

Departed: 12/12/2021 (Solon Springs)
Obituary Preview: Martha L. (Itutis) Hinde, age 97, Minong, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 12, 2021. Born on August 9, 1924, in Spring Valley, Illinois, Martha was the daughter of Felix Aitutis and Mary Barbara Eitutis.
Upon graduating from Spring Valley high school, Martha was employed at the B-Z-B Knitting Company. On May 18, 1946, Martha was united in marriage to George D. Hinde in Loves Park, Illinois. The three boys were born in the following years, George served in the Navy, and Martha worked as a waitress in Loves Park. In 1965, they moved to Wascott, Wisconsin, and purchased MarLu’s Resort on Cranberry Lake.
Owning a resort was much work, but the memories bring smiles. MarLu’s was a home away from home for many cabin renters, who became a part of the Hinde family. Martha wanted people to feel comfortable while they relaxed - the homemade donuts were a favorite treat! During this time, Martha drove a bus for the Minong School District. She handled the snowy roads and students without any complaints.
In 1978, the resort sold, but George and Martha, who loved the woodsy area, moved to a nearby home. Martha, who had a reputation for being hard-working, missed interacting with people. Therefore, she accepted a job at the Wascott Corner Store. Recently during a day trip, Martha visited the Wascott area and reminisced. After George passed away in 1996, Martha moved to an apartment in Minong, Wisconsin. Walking continued to be her favorite pastime, as well as putting together puzzles, feeding the birds, watching Wheel of Fortune, and planting flowers outside her patio door. Anyone who knew Martha was aware that going to BINGO was reserved for Thursdays!
Martha was a serene person who questioned her shyness. With that said, she was proud of the family’s four generations and their accomplishments. After years of living in the apartment complex, Martha welcomed her neighbors as family. Together, they would decorate the Christmas tree and enjoy many holidays. Memories. We will remember Martha’s smile, the enjoyment in dressing up, her choice of coordinating earrings, and most importantly, her strong will.
A special thank you goes to the ICU nurses and doctors at Marshfield Medical Center in Rice Lake, WI, who cared for Martha during her illness.
Martha is preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, Felix and Mary; brothers, Dominic Eitutis,  Edward Aitutis, Felix Eitutis, Leonard Eitutis, Stanley Eitutis; sisters, Bernice Holm, Della Rasmus, Josephine Rolando, Lucille Vancauwenberge; great-grandson, Boston Alan Mason; and friends, Bob Jansen, and Dorothy Karwoski.
The surviving family will deeply miss Martha - sons, Gary (Chary) Hinde of Pecatonica, Illinois, Gregory (Linda) Hinde of Radisson, Wisconsin, George (Claudia Grenier) Hinde of Superior, Wisconsin; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A private family service was held by the Solon Springs Funeral Home in Solon Springs, Wisconsin, at the Wascott Cemetery.

George Herman Aden - May 08, 1924 - April 18, 2021

Departed: 04/18/2021 (Solon Springs)
Obituary Preview: George H Aden, age 96, of Solon Springs, WI passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner, WI.
George Herman Aden born May 8, 1924 in Solon Springs, WI, the son of Henry and Anna (Schoone) Aden.  George’s dad, Henry, lived by a seaport named Emden, Germany.  His dad Henry came to the United States in 1912 and worked on a farm in Iowa before finding land in a Minneapolis cattleman’s magazine.  He moved and settled on his property in Solon Springs in 1919.  Henry married Anna M. Schoone on April 12, 1922.  George is very proud of the fact that the land has been in his family’s name for 102 year.
While living in Solon Springs his dad was a stone mason, brick layer, and carpenter.  George always said he was a good mason and always mixed his concrete correctly so it would last a long time, one shovel of mix to three shovels of sand.  George was proud of his family, he said they were all hard workers and were kind and helpful to others.  His mother worked hard everyday taking care of the family, gardening, keeping the house and helping with chores.  His sister Emma was 14 months older, and was Valedictorian of her graduating class in High School.  She moved to Oregon where she lived and worked until her death on June 25, 2020.  George told me that when he was a kid there was a grocery store named, “The Fairway Store”, near where the grocery store is now in Solon.
One of George’s prized Christmas gifts when he was young was a runner sled that he kept all his life. His favorite candy was jelly beans and said he first tasted them at 8 years old and has liked them ever since.   We made sure to keep him in jelly beans ever since we found this out up to his last day.  George remembered being 9 years old when highway 53, then 2 lanes, was first paved with concrete in 1933.  He remembered many a time before it was paved that they helped people whose vehicles got stuck.  George planted one of the first trees in the school forest on May 10, 1934.  He was 10 years old at that time. The United States government called a then 18-year-old George to serve his country in WWII.  He was drafted on February 14, 1942 and served in the 87th Infantry, 5th Infantry Division.  He served 2 years 9 months.  During his service he saw the following European countries; Ireland where he trained for 7 months, France, Holland, Belgium and England.  He never made it into Germany because he was wounded.  In 1942 George boarded the ship, Cape Town Castle, which was in a fleet of four ships bound across the Atlantic.  He said each ship was filled with double its capacity.  After training in Ireland, he again boarded a ship that landed in Normandy, France on Utah beach on July 10, 1942.  Sixteen million American men were drafted into WWII.  The battle began.  George told how the German machine guns could shoot 1,300 rounds per minute compared to the American machine gun that shot 450 rounds per minute.  Not a fair fight.  At only, 19-20 years old George told of seeing things no one should see.  One event that stayed in his mind all his life was about a wounded soldier on a stretcher being carried by four other soldiers.  He and others saw the soldier on the stretcher hit in the stomach by a German artillery shell and all five men were blown to pieces.  George said he saw legs hanging 60 feet up in a tree, body parts and blood all over.  And they were told to march on.  He saw fellow soldiers and friends shot right between the eyes.  I’m certain that George suffered “Shell Shock” as it was referred to then or as it is referred to now, PTSD which was never diagnosed and he never got help to process.  This is why he lived a very private life, not letting others in, and never marrying.  On September 11, 1944 George was shot through his upper thigh of his right leg at about 3 a.m., in Metz, France.  The German soldier was about 20 feet away on the other side of a barbed wire fence when he shot George.  A soldier named Chester Farrell helped George to get medical attention after he was wounded.  He was taken to a hospital in France where they found he had gangrene in the wound.  The doctors talked about amputating, but decided to make four incisions hip to knee to drain the infection.  Those were left open to drain for a month before being sutured.  This saved his leg and his life.  He was then sent to England to a hospital to recover for 3 months before being honorable discharged and sent home.  George is a Purple Heart recipient and a true war hero!!
George worked at Nyrook Manufacturing in St. Paul, MN where he used a chop saw to cut pieces to make furniture.  He worked at Superwood in Duluth, MN where he made pallets and one other company where he assembled wooden counsel TV cabinets.
George will be sorely missed by his friends in the Solon Springs Community.  He loved Solon Springs and was very proud to call it his home.
He will be laid to rest at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, May 10, 2021 at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, where full military honors will be accorded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need it. They can help notify people of the passing, share details about funeral services, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template to help guide the process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. You may also choose to include hobbies, interests, achievements, or other personal details that celebrate the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to add a personal touch and help readers visualize the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the publication or platform directly to learn their specific submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may accept submissions via email or online forms, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, there may be a fee associated with publishing an obituary in a newspaper or online platform. The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features like photos or special layouts.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Just be sure to store it safely and make sure your loved ones know where to find it when the time comes.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. It's often used in situations where a full obituary isn't necessary or feasible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death and sharing biographical information. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy, often delivered at a funeral or memorial service.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the obituary. Just be sure to keep them concise and relevant.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the error and suggested corrections.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?

You may need permission from the original publisher or author to republish an obituary. Be sure to check copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before sharing someone else's work.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a self-written tribute that celebrates one's life while they're still alive. It can be a unique way to reflect on accomplishments and share gratitude with loved ones.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! You can specify if donations should be made in lieu of flowers or suggest specific charities or memorial funds that were important to the deceased.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Triple-check facts like dates, names, and spellings to ensure accuracy. You may also want to have multiple people review the draft before submitting it for publication.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Absolutely! Even if someone passed away years ago, you can still write an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who died young or suddenly, it's essential to be sensitive to the grieving family and focus on celebrating their life rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include humor or lighthearted anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to capture someone's personality and spirit. Just be sure to use good judgment and avoid anything that might offend or upset readers.

What is the purpose of publishing an obituary online?

Publishing an obituary online makes it easily accessible to a wider audience, allowing friends and family who may not have access to local newspapers to learn about the passing and pay their respects.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check with the specific platform for their policies.

Can I create a memorial website or page in addition to publishing an obituary?

Absolutely! Memorial websites or pages can serve as a digital gathering place for loved ones to share memories, photos, and condolences. They can remain active for years to come as a lasting tribute.

What resources are available to help me write an obituary?

You can find templates and guides online, consult with funeral homes or crematoriums, or seek assistance from professional writers specializing in obituaries. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it!
