George Donald Gentry - October 30, 1968 - February 07, 2022

Departed: 02/07/2022 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: George Donald Gentry was born on Wednesday October 30th, 1968 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital NYC. He entered the world as a preemie at just seven months gestation (Clearly he was eager to make his stamp on the world!). Donald grew up on W. 172nd street in New York City from childhood to adulthood, with his loving mother Tawanna and three siblings, Darnell, Sanovia and Dione Gentry as well as his paternal grandparents (Mr. & Mrs. Lester Green Sr.), cousins Lester Jr., Pamela, and Rebecca Green, where they all lived as a close-knit family in the same building for many years. His aunt DeeDee was never far away either. He remained there through early adulthood and was a graduate of George Washington High School in NYC.   With NYC being such a fast-paced life, their caring mother decided she wanted them to experience life at a slower pace and decided to make an impromptu move to Columbus, Ohio in 1993 and Donald followed in 1995. Donald worked several jobs here in Columbus after their move, unfortunately he could not continue working due to many health challenges that he had long suffered from as a child. Regardless of his issues he pressed on and always kept a positive, jovial attitude and was always willing to help anyone who needed a hand. Donald knew no strangers. He was always polite, mild mannered, always in pain but he never complained, a quiet soul just like his mother. He Loved & lived with his only sister, Sanovia and his brother, Dione in his later years, they were his faithful and loving caregivers.
Donald took his final rest on Monday, February 7th,2022 at home with family. Donald is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Lester Green Sr., Cousin Lester Green Jr., Cousin Rebecca Green, Mother Tawanna Lee Jones, and Father George Donald Gentry Sr., Maternal Grandfather Elroy Jones, Cousin Tracy Jones, Aunt Christina Jones, Uncle Roger Lee Jones and Uncle Willie Jones. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life and legacy of the deceased, while also providing closure and support to those who are grieving. They help to notify others of the passing, share memories and stories, and celebrate the person's life.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details and any charitable donations or memorial requests.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and help readers connect with the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Absolutely! While it's common to publish an obituary shortly after someone passes away, there's no time limit on when you can write and share one. This can be a meaningful way to honor someone's memory even years after their passing.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary?

Yes! Obituaries don't have to be somber or serious. Including humorous anecdotes or personality traits can help capture the essence of the person being remembered and make the obituary more engaging to read.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

Be mindful of sharing sensitive or private information that may not be appropriate for public consumption. If you're unsure what to include or exclude, consider consulting with family members or close friends for guidance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person being remembered or reflects their personality or values.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

Drawing up an obituary can be a challenging task, especially during a difficult time. Consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.

Can I update or correct an already published obituary?

If you need to make changes to an already published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform where it was originally published. They may be able to assist with making corrections or updates.

How do I share an obituary on social media?

Copy and paste the text into a social media post, or share a link to the online obituary. You can also use hashtags to reach a wider audience and encourage others to share their condolences.

What is an online obituary versus a traditional newspaper obituary?

An online obituary is published on a website or platform specifically designed for sharing obituaries, whereas a traditional newspaper obituary appears in print. Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The publication timeframe for online obituaries varies depending on the platform. Some websites may publish immediately, while others may take several hours or days to review and post.

Some online platforms allow you to include links to videos, photo albums, or other digital content. Check with the specific platform for their policies on attachments and multimedia content.

How do I find old or archived obituaries?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in storing historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived materials.

Can I republish an old obituary on social media?

If you come across an old obituary that holds sentimental value, feel free to share it on social media as a way to remember and honor the person being remembered.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is typically written before a funeral service and serves as a formal announcement of someone's passing. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech delivered during the funeral service that celebrates the person's life and shares personal anecdotes.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

YES! Writing your own obituary ahead of time can ensure that your story is told exactly as you want it to be. Just be sure to store it safely with trusted individuals who will know what to do with it when the time comes.
