He had a creative mind and capable hands to get things done. The Howes family owns a property called “Peter Hill” in Ashfield and Roger, his father and brothers loved spending time there. Roger was especially proud of the bridge he built on the property.
As family farming became more difficult in the 80’s, it was decided to close the farm in 1988. Roger then worked for Roberts Bros. Lumber and eventually retired from Cowan Auto Supply.
Roger was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ashfield. He had also volunteered with the Ashfield Fire Department serving on the ambulance.
He admired older cars and was a former member of the Yankee Motor Club. He was proud of his 1931 Model A Coupe and 1966 Mustang GT. Roger and his wife Janice would enjoy traveling the area with the Club.

Moving to Greenfield in 2004, Sheila volunteered at the library and was an active congregant at St. James Episcopal Church.
Sheila had a lifelong love of learning. She was a voracious reader, active in her book club, and attended Senior Symposia and local concerts regularly. She was always eager for new experiences and traveled in North America and Europe throughout her life. Sheila enjoyed the outdoors from an early age and was an avid birder, with a life-list of 384 species. The Red-breasted Nuthatch was her favorite.
Sheila liked all types of word games, including crossword puzzles and the daily Jumble, Scrabble and most recently Wordle. A patient and wily card player, her favorite game was Canasta. She won her final hand with a flourish, the evening before her passing.
Sheila leaves behind a loving family and many dear friends, and will be remembered and missed for the generosity and kindness she showed to all around her.
A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew, 8 Church St, Greenfield, at 11 am on Saturday, February 26th. Donations in Sheila’s name can be made to the church in lieu of flowers. The family is grateful to Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home of Greenfield for their assistance.

Helen S Burnap - January 01, 1927 - January 23, 2022

Departed: 01/23/2022 (Shelburne Falls)
Obituary Preview: Helen Sadie Hatch Burnap, the “Grande Dame of Water Street”, passed away peacefully at the age of 95, on January 23, 2022. Born on January 1, 1927 in Windsor, Vermont to Philip Hatch and Maude (Hastings) Hatch.
Helen left Vermont to join the “flatlanders” in Massachusetts at 17, and graduated from Bay Path University in Longmeadow. During college, Helen lived with a family and took care of their children for room and board. After graduation she lived at the YWCA and worked in Springfield.
Square dancing was a popular social event at the time and it was at a dance that she met the love of her life, Gaius Burnap, from Shelburne Falls. She took the train on many weekends and stayed with his family in their home on Water Street. Helen and Gaius were married on December 31, 1947, the night before her 21st birthday. They joined their family and friends at the New Year’s Eve dance and didn’t tell anyone that they were married for two weeks! Aside from time that they lived in South Carolina, where Gaius was stationed, she lived on Water Street.
Helen worked in the accounting department of Wirthmore (Feeds) Retail Store in Greenfield, MA. In 1960 she joined the staff at Baystate Franklin County Hospital as a Medical Transcriptionist and retired in 1993.
Helen and Gaius were involved with the American Legion and VFW for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and served as the treasurer. They went monthly to spend time with veterans at the VA Medical Hospital in Leeds, Massachusetts. Helen marched in many parades, gathered the vines for the wreaths that were made for Memorial Day, put hundreds of flags at the cemetery to honor former members of the military and provided the opportunity for many children to sell Poppies! A lover of nature, she enjoyed gardening and volunteered with the Blossom Brigade at the Bridge of Flowers. Helen assisted with providing treats for the Annual Rag Shag Parade and handing out water for the Bridge of Flowers Race. Helen was very involved with her nieces and nephews in Shelburne Falls. Since she and Gaius had a TV first, the kids would be at their home every Saturday for cartoons and lunch. She helped with bike decorations and costumes for Halloween, attended school events, took them swimming and let them practice driving with her car. Her great nephew and niece, Dana and Ryann Stacy, were blessed to grow up close by and spend a great deal of time with Aunt Helen. As she had done with their aunts and dad, she attended many of their events and most holidays were spent at their home. Helen was adored by her many nieces and nephews. She was well known in the area and could often be seen walking to the store, bank or post office with a smile on her face and a pleasant comment for everyone. She was given a surprise celebration for her 90th birthday which was attended by family from across the country. Helen had a “bucket list” and several days after her party, family members went to Berkshire East and witnessed Aunt Helen zip lining with Dana and Ryann!
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings (Ruth, Viola, Hilda, Philip and James). She is survived by her brother Robert (Barbara) and many nieces, nephews, and friends who were blessed by her presence in their lives. Special thanks to “Helen’s Helpers” whose loving care and compassion allowed her to be at home until December (Bonnie, Carole, Cheryl, Donna, Josie, Lucy, Mariana, Pam, Pam, Sarah and Tsering). Helen’s neighbors were wonderful and a source of joy to her over the years. Thanks to Dr. Topolski and staff, Dr. Katz and staff, the Shelburne Falls Senior Center and Fire Department, Life Path, Triad and Charlene Manor. Donations in Helen’s honor can be made to: Senior Center Shelburne Falls 7 Main Street Shelburne Falls, MA 01370
A memorial celebration of Helen’s life will be held in the spring.

It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the deceased person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help families and friends cope with their loss by sharing memories and celebrating the life of their loved one.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, awards, or charitable work.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in writing the obituary. Sometimes, the deceased person may have written their own obituary beforehand.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to gather information and craft a well-written obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased person. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and help readers connect with the person being remembered.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary?

While there are no hard-and-fast rules, it's generally recommended to keep the tone respectful and dignified. Avoid using slang or overly casual language, and focus on highlighting the deceased person's positive qualities and achievements.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication fee.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 1-2 years).

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make minor corrections or updates to an already-published obituary. However, significant changes may not be allowed due to space constraints or editorial policies.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for a single publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What if I don't want an obituary published at all?
