Departed: 01/08/2022 (Ottumwa)
Obituary Preview: Mabel Fern Sammons of Ottumwa, IA, age 86, passed away on January 8, 2022 in Ottumwa. She was born on August 28, 1935, the fourth and final girl to W. Hervey and Beatrice (Leonard) Anderson at home on their farm south of Ottumwa. She grew up on what was called Anderson Ridge (now Copperhead Road). She met the love of her life at age 12 when Donald Sammons moved into Green Township and started attending the same one-room schoolhouse, Union School. They began dating in high school and both graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1953. They married on July 3, 1955 at First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa. Mabel lived in Wapello County all her life except for two years in Iowa Falls. She was a true farm wife with a partnership working right alongside Donald in the fields until they retired. She never shied away from responsibilities or hard work and you could always count on her. After marriage, they lived on the Lake Road and she recalled the rented farmhouse so cold in the winters that snow would blow through the cracks in the walls and floors. Of course, no running water. Baby Kevin had to wear snow boots in the house. They then moved to Iowa Falls for two years as Donald was a farmhand. They moved back to Ottumwa in 1962 for an opportunity to rent farmland and lived on north Highway 63 across from Memorial Lawn Cemetery. After renting for many years, they purchased the farm in 1975 and made significant improvements over the years until 2016 when they sold the farm and moved to independent living within the Good Samaritan community. Mabel worked at John Deere, Reinmund and Company, CPA, and Memorial Lawn Cemetery. She was a member of the Modern Mothers Farm Wife Club and the Bon Mot Circle of King’s Daughters. She was active in whatever her children were such as a leader for 4-H Dahlonega Do-Gooders Club, Brownies, Girl Scouts, and den mother for Cub Scouts amongst many others positions. She was an excellent league bowler for many years. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, and quilted many beautiful pieces. Every day she dressed her best and loved lipstick saying, “I never left the house without it.” She was an excellent homemaker and cook, known for her Texas sheet cake, handmade noodles, and black raspberry pie (from which Donald picked from his secret spot on the farm). She always decorated the home beautifully for every occasion and holiday. She loved entertaining and hosted many wiener roasts and picnics. Don and her grew a very large garden and she canned or froze everything possible. Like most farmers, they raised and butchered most of their meat. Many meals were delivered to Donald in the field during planting or harvest season to be efficient. Mabel was incredibly organized and sharp until her death. Donald and she loved to travel and spent many winters in Hawaii and Mission, TX. They were active in motorcycling achieving the coveted 1,000-miles-within-24-hours challenge. They enjoyed many seasons of snowmobiling and camping. They also camped at the Iowa State Fair beginning in 1965 for almost 48 years. For 51 years they played cards every single month with the same six couples called, “The Card Party.” She accompanied Don on many of the tour bus trips for which he drove. She was a faithful member of the Bethany Baptist Church and served as treasurer, financial secretary, assisted with bible school, their food pantry, and The Clothes Closet for the needy. She had a strong belief in God and the Christian faith. She was a wonderful wife and mother and had a great love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to laugh and enjoyed being in on the joke! She often told the story of how easily she got the giggles as a child with her sisters and couldn’t stop. She was a born caretaker following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, whom she adored. She lovingly cared for Donald at home during his struggle with Alzheimer’s. She followed God’s will to help others. She is survived by her daughter, Nadina Hofts of Des Moines; five grandchildren: Levi Hofts of Alexandria, VA, Elliott Hofts (Joe) of San Diego, CA, Frederick Hofts (Kayla) of Des Moines, Kyle Sammons of Ottumwa, Kelly Sammons of Tiffin; two great-grandsons: Kole Sammons of Ottumwa, and Walker Hofts of Des Moines; a sister, Gladys Roquet of Ottumwa; a brother-in-law, John Neil of Mt Pleasant; and sisters-in-law: Marilyn Helkey of Quincy, IL, and Charlotte Sammons of Kirkville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; son, Kevin; sisters Irene Ryan and Margaret Neil; two brothers-in-law: William McDowell and Jerry Sammons; son-in-law, Frederick Hofts, and her parents.Visitation will be held at Sinnott Funeral Home in Ottumwa at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2022, with the service immediately following at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating.
